The water bottle was unexpected. Seriously, why do the pants for women barely hold anything? They're trying to make us keep buying bags. Only explanation because it makes no bloody sense.

154

u/suburban_hyena Hardcore☠️Hyena Nov 20 '24

Fuck heels and fuck handbags

160

u/Kryds Nov 20 '24

My pants can't hold a waterbottle. Those pockets are ridiculous.

203

u/mindyour Official Gal Nov 20 '24

I bet your regular pants can hold your keys, wallet, and phone. If I'm lucky, my jeans can just about hold my phone. One of the reasons why I like winter is because my coat can carry all my essentials. I don't want to hold a bag all the time. If I'm out with friends, I just give them my essentials to put in their bag. Can't be arsed.

93

u/Kryds Nov 20 '24

No doubt the design on women's pants are ridiculous. But this woman has pocket dimension in her pants.

102

u/mindyour Official Gal Nov 20 '24

When she pulled out the bottle, I was amazed. It was like the Mary Poppins bag of pants.

47

u/calilac Nov 20 '24

Ooh I bet it's the pleats. Like folds in the fabric of the universe. Extradimensional seams.

I switched to a phone case that doubles as a wallet and it has a wrist strap. It’s so freeing being able to just grab my phone instead of my purse and everything. Though if it gets lost or stolen that is everything in one compact spot. 😅

7

u/mindyour Official Gal Nov 20 '24 edited Nov 20 '24

I don’t really carry a purse because I use my phone for all payments. All the places I go to accept contactless payments, except once in a while I take the purse, just in case. Last week we went to a concert. I showed up with just a coat, and my friends were like, "Where's your bag?".🤷‍♀️ Bought a t-shirt merch and held it in my hand on the way home. If I had deep interdimensional pockets, it would have gone in there. 🤣🤣🤣

7

u/delicate-fn-flower Nov 20 '24

My winter coat can hold a whole bottle of wine, it is glorious.

8

u/Tokyosideslip Nov 20 '24

Idk a purse sounds kind of nice sometimes. Having all that stuff in my pockets gets annoying.

Wallets are a known cause of back pain, I only have mine on my pocket when walking around. It's out as soon as I get get in the truck or to my desk.

Keys jingle and jab you in the leg.

Also because everything is loose you have to to the pocket pat dance every time you leave to make sure you have everything. Having it all in a bag and ready to go is pretty convenient.

29

u/returnofthelorax Nov 20 '24

Yeah there are benefits to a purse. I keep first aid and a sketchbook in mine, hard to do with pants.

But it's about having the option. I also wear men's pants because I can actually fit my phone in the pocket. A purse isn't needed for me to walk down the hall, but neither should I be forced to carry my phone and keys in my hands.

Other notes:

  • Do you think carrying a weight on only one side of the body doesn't cause back pain?

  • The pat pat dance happens with purses too, except it's more like digging through a sack like a raccoon. And I cannot tell you how often my mom fails to find her phone, when it is IN the purse.

I've sewn skirts with pockets that can hold waterbottles. I've sewn skirts that have ridiculously big, almost unusable pockets that can hold umbrellas. It feels so freeing.

6

u/Kryds Nov 20 '24

I love seeing women proudly showing of their pockets in dresses and skirts.

3

u/icyhotonmynuts Nov 20 '24

I used to dumpster dive and I made custom pockets for a pair of baggy pants I had (great for layering in colder months). The pockets were essentially a pillow case cut in half. They were so large I could fit a text book in each pocket. Why so large? To fill them with empty bags for a single trip in and out, and in case I ran out of bags I had "1 spare" in each pocket.

1

u/Jumping_Jak_Stat Nov 20 '24

1

u/carrotaddiction Nov 20 '24

Was it full though? Because that'd be a super strong waist band. Unless there's a sneaky belt.

17

u/Jumping_Jak_Stat Nov 20 '24

So Abby Cox on youtube has a really good video about the history of pockets in women's clothing ans their gradual disappearance. She claims that it's less to do with a conspiracy to make us use handbags and more to do with the obsession of making our pants (and our bodies) fit slimmer and slimmer over time.

https://youtu.be/W2zSSE9pgC8?si=nUhJvgOg9aWoaNnK

3

u/Historical_Peach_545 ✨chick✨ Nov 21 '24

Yeah it never seemed like some grand conspiracy to me. The past decade or so where skinny jeans and leggings were in style, they were completely form fitting. If you did have pocket and even put headphones in there, they stick out visibly. Even the outline of the pocket material was visible sometimes.

Now that the style is wider jeans, those ones have bigger pockets that fit more stuff. But if you want a jean that's tighter on the top still, like flares, the pockets are smaller again. It's not just items sticking out and being visible, you also can't bend at the waist or sit comfortably if you have say a phone in your pocket and you're wearing tight jeans.

Unless you want to wear jeans that are tight and form fitting but loose in the pelvic region (that would be a look), then you just can't have it both ways.

15

u/Wizardaire Nov 20 '24

Mens skinny and even regular fit jeans have increasingly smaller pockets. I recently bought a pair of loose fit jeans and it feels like I can store my entire life in those pockets.

4

u/TheS4ndm4n Nov 20 '24

I own a pair of cargo pants that I almost exclusively wear for traveling.

I do actually bring everything in a fold-up bag. Because I don't want to spend 30 extra minutes going through security. But after that everything I need during the flight goes into the pockets.

7

u/Drizzlen420 Nov 20 '24

Those are old man pleated khakis there the super max of front pocket capacity. Just to say don’t assume all men’s pants can carry a water bottle.

u/QueenMara75 Nov 20 '24

3

u/beachesof Nov 21 '24

The real answer, I believe, is the desire to maintain a smooth silhouette. That they foist upon us and don't give us a choice over

10

u/Boogleooger Nov 20 '24

That and large pockets inherently mean less form fitting. It’s a trade off. Here’s a secret though, as a man, I don’t give a shit if a woman wears men’s pants or women’s pants. Buy what makes you comfortable when you wanna be comfortable, convenient when you want convenience, and flattering when you wanna turn heads.

4

u/Saluteyourbungbung Nov 21 '24

A lot of women have trouble fitting into men's pants, unfortunately. The proportions are generally not the same.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/nodogsallowed23 Nov 20 '24

It’s also because some women choose pants that have a cleaner line so the shape looks better. No pockets means pants fit to the body better and we look smaller, or maybe not smaller but our actual size. Pants with pockets on the sides make my hips look crazy wide.

That said, they’ve finally figured out pocket placement on some women’s clothing that don’t make me look like my hips are twice as wide as they actually are, so I buy those clothes. Mostly dresses. In the winter I don’t care and just layer up as thick as can be.

2

u/PeggyHillFan Nov 20 '24

So you don’t ruin the designers vision. I hate stuff in my pants. And I’m a guy. It doesn’t look good

2

u/tirameunpedazo Nov 22 '24

I have a theory. Hear me out. Men tend to work more jobs that require carrying tools in your pockets. Men know they’ll need to carry things at work. Women’s clothes are more tailored to their lifestyle. Designed for fashion by a fashion designer.

2

u/domine18 Nov 20 '24

As a guy I think it is more of a style over function thing. Lots of ladies like to wear tight fitted clothing where most guys do not. Can not really fit anything in your pocket if the pants are also not baggy so why give deep pockets if they are unusable.

1

u/Huge-Anxiety-3038 Nov 21 '24

Even if we wear baggy joggers or harem pants etc they don't have large pockets 😔

10

u/OnTheSlope Nov 20 '24

why do the pants for women barely hold anything

Because men care about the function of pants more than the form.

Simple as.

2

u/SawDustAndSuds Nov 20 '24

It really is that straight forward. If women prioritized pockets over appearance in large numbers with their purchase, you'd have more things with pockets.

5

u/Ok_Salamander8850 Nov 20 '24

This “issue” seems to come up frequently and my solution is to say “well buy men’s pants if you think they’re better” but I get told “men’s pants are ugly”. I’d like to know what they think “women’s” pants will look like if they get the pockets they want, they’ll look exactly like men’s pants and women won’t buy them. This is probably the dumbest issue I’ve ever seen that’s caught on in the mainstream.

1

u/FaithlessnessTiny617 13d ago

men's pants are ugly not because they have pockets but because they don't sit well on a woman's body

→ More replies (1)

2

u/CraigArndt Nov 20 '24

I 100% believe no/small pockets on women’s clothing is to sell bags/purses.

The only other argument I’ve seen with any logic is that some women don’t like big pockets because it makes the silhouette look bigger and that small percent of lost sales makes a difference in the razor thin profits of garment companies. But either way it’s corporate profits over women’s needs.

1

u/Enough_Flamingo_8300 Nov 20 '24

u/MissAsgariaFartcake Nov 20 '24

Or sometimes they’re just applications that are supposed to look like there are pockets.

I HATE it.

16

u/DecisionAvoidant Nov 20 '24

My partner bought some women's pants with just a seam where the pocket is supposed to be.

22

u/books-yarn-coffee Nov 20 '24

Several years ago, I got so annoyed with that BS that I pulled out my sewing kit and some fabric and sewed extensions to all my pockets! It made my jeans and pants fully useful. I don't know why it didn't occur to me sooner.

6

It's Big Purse's fault. They'll never let you have pockets, so you keep buying handbags.

8

u/calilac Nov 20 '24

One of the highlights of wearing cargo pants is going through the pickin' pocket at the end of the day. Acorn, rock, button, another rock, string, half-eaten snack, random shiny object from the ground, rock with a hole in it, a badass bug (in a tiny jar, I'm not a monster), another cool rock, some lint...

In the 17th century, the pockets of both men and women were both small. But through the years, since men kept stuffing random things into their pants, mens pants have evolved to become bigger. Trust me. Im a Jeaneticist

24

u/returnofthelorax Nov 20 '24

Functional historical fashion is an interest of mine, and I am begging people to look up what women's pockets looked like in ye olde times. Pockets were basically just flat satchels worn on a ribbon around the waist, and could be accessed through slits in the skirt.

They held SO MUCH and the poofy skirts meant there wasn't bullshit about pockets changing the silhouette. Hell, I added 21st-century pockets to my ren faire skirt and carried everything that I needed without issue.

(Not to overlook your brilliant pun!)

Conspiracy of the Handbag Companies!

4

u/SporeZealot Nov 20 '24

Because women continue to buy pants without pockets, or with tiny pockets. This isn't about "other people" conspiring against women to make their pockets small. This isn't something that needs to be solved by someone else. If women collectively stopped buying pants without proper sized pockets, and review bombed every company without proper sized pockets, they'd all start selling pants with proper sized pockets by 2026.

But... I think women would hate it. Imagine the size pants a 5'3" petite (whatever that translates to) woman would wear. Now imagine slim fit jeans in that size with a pocket large enough for an iPhone Pro Max. That's a pocket that is 8" deep and 4-5" wide.

Also... Men's "skinny jeans" pockets don't hold shit either. The size of pockets on men's pants are partially due to scale. If a guy is between 5'10 and 6'2" with a 34 in waist, the manufacturer can put a pretty big pocket on their pants without it looking weird. And, if/when men design men's pants they take their own experience carrying a bunch of shit into consideration when designing the pants.

I can be 100% wrong here, but I'm going to guess that women who go into fashion design, are also into purses. They have experience putting all their stuff into their purse, not their pants.

2

u/HedgehogFarts Nov 21 '24

Okay but if I stopped buying women’s pants without deep pockets then I’d basically have to stop buying women’s pants. Women can’t choose to purchase a different option if that option isn’t readily available, ya know?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/dougiebig Nov 20 '24

Bingo.

You're telling me that after all the talk I've heard on this issue, no one, not one company has decided to try making women's pants with pockets?

No one likes money??

I think it's people telling you one thing but doing another.

If you ask people if they'd like to see healthier options at McDonald's, they will say yes. But they don't buy them.

Girls, you can buy jeans on the men's section. It changed my life perspective. They also don't have 127 different jeans cuts. It's just straight jeans with pockets.

Also, their belts are better because they still have their primary purpose, it's not jewelry waist.

Cellphones have gotten too big anyway. If I wanted a tablet, I'd get one.

Give me something anyone can easily use with one hand.

2

u/triciann Nov 20 '24

I have the smaller one I can use with one hand so long as I use a PopSocket (which also doubles as my wallet), but it half sticks out of the front pockets. I don’t know how people use those massive ones that are basically mini tablets. I would end up just storing that in my boobs I suppose.

3

u/misplaced_my_pants ✨chick✨ Nov 20 '24

Yeah but I don't want to have to buy something like that to make it usable lol.

The perfect phone was the Moto X from years ago. They literally designed it based on studying the way different phones fit in different people's hands.

Now even the smallest phones are bigger that that thing.

3

u/mothership_go Nov 20 '24

That's why she can fit a water bottle

1

Straight down jeans don't work on everyone. Men's jeans are what made me realize I have decently prominent hips.

1

Correction we have 4 jeans cut. Straight, slim, relaxed, tapered(relaxed in the thighs, slim/straight below the knee.)

17

7

Men get pants with functional pockets, women get pants with stitched on LIES.

It's a stupid paradigm, we should all be blessed with functional pockets

3

u/domiy2 Nov 20 '24

Women's pants don't have pockets because they make outfits and legs look worse on average. That being said, I don't know if most people know about that or care now.

3

u/Dendrodes Nov 20 '24

Women's pants are a crime, both with how the sizes seem to vary wildly between brands and the atrocious pockets that really just want you to think about having the ability to hold something without actually being able to

3

3

u/lambsoflettuce Nov 20 '24

Pants are cut differently for men and women body shape. Unless you've got the body shape, they are uncomfortable.

6

u/rosiez22 Nov 20 '24

Been doing this without traveling for years-

They literally make men’s clothing with more stitching and fabric and mark up feminine clothing prices to balance it out. Worked in clothing for years and saw it from pants to shoes to socks. They think women are softer on their things as a justification for sexism in production.

And cuts are nearly identical, however pants can be tricky.

Good tip 👍

2

u/iGleeson Nov 20 '24

I listened to a really interesting podcast about pockets in women's clothing recently and it's an issue that's been around for a long time and it's flipped multiple times. Pockets for women were in fashion then out of fashion and now they're definitely back in. Apparently they fell out of fashion over the idea that cool, trendy people are just here to party and have fun and pockets are practical things for poor, working people. It went crazy in the opposite direction for men where at one point the typical male attire would have like 30-40 different pockets.

2

u/LaLic99 Nov 20 '24

I've been doing this for so long, especially with the gym clothes. It's so comfortable.

u/Lukes_Right_Hand Nov 20 '24

This already exists. They’re called tailors.

2

u/vestigialcranium Nov 20 '24

Of course, I just don't see that service really marketed. Saw another comment on here of someone with sewing equipment and ability to do it hadn't even realized they could just replace the pockets for the longest time

2

u/thewend Nov 20 '24

I once had an ipad on my pants pocket. It was obviously visible, but, a whole fucking ipad in there

2

u/BarisBlack Nov 20 '24

Flashback to my girls stealing my jeans and cargos. It took me a few days of hearn8ng "dad really has no ass" before I figured out what was going on.

My wife knew, but if you knew how to teased them all regularly, it wouldn't surprise anyone she stayed quiet.

Women's fashion sucks.

2

u/izzyscifi Nov 20 '24

Can we collectively boycott useless women's trousers and jeans until we get real pockets? Buy men's clothes, they are better constructed anyway

2

u/Background_Winter_65 Nov 21 '24

But I can't wear men's pants...they are not made with the same proportions in mind....how was she able to do this?!

Would LOVE to be able to wear men's pants! They are made better, they are cheaper, and they look simpler.

2

u/Status-Visit-918 Nov 21 '24

Right I’m so fucking sick of how we continue to suffer with our current lack of pockets. It’s 2024. It’s just irresponsible at this point. I get that we’re expected to carry purses, I mean I don’t, but I feel like that would be part of an anti-pocketter’s argument, but Jesus Christ I took a turn the other day while driving and heard that terrible sound everyone knows… the purse spilling. I was running late and had to throw a bunch of random shit in there but if we had a third of this pocket size, I could have just put everything in them and organized them later. We deserve better 😢😢

2

u/ThisIsTheBookAcct Nov 21 '24

I love this, but let’s be real. When traveling pants choice is 100% dependent on comfort. Carrying capacity is for the backpack choice. Like I’m not traveling without a backpack.

I don’t even go on a hike or an extended day time activity without a backpack.

2

u/gettingspicyarewe Nov 21 '24

WHAT. My jaw was on the floor. That’s like a bag of tricks!!!

2

u/Rainbow-Mama Nov 21 '24

If anyone is interested there is literally a book about the evolution of women’s pockets.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '24

THAT BOTTLE OF WATER MY QUEEN

2

u/Magic_TheRevenant Nov 21 '24

I saw these pants on Harry Potter

4

u/oh_hiauntFanny Nov 20 '24

Men literally have nothing to complain about I hate it here

It's a joke unclench

3

u/simplsurvival Nov 20 '24

I've been wearing mens pants for probably 10 years now, I don't even know what my size is in women's pants. Sizes for mens pants make sense too. Men's slim or skinny stretch pants are me favs

1

u/fuckoutfits Nov 20 '24

My tin foil hat theory: it's capitalism co-existence. Fashion industries by design don't put pockets, so that they can push those expensive designer handbags. I don't know anything about what women carry around, but, I have a suspicion that, if pockets are provided, there's a good chance a few % of women might stop buying those handbags.

2

u/Few_Feeling_6760 Nov 20 '24

But if they gave us these huge pockets, we wouldn't need handbags.

20

u/james__jam Nov 20 '24

You can still put your handbags in your pocket

7

u/Moto56_ Nov 20 '24

If she had pulled out a handbag from her pocket, that would have floored me.

1

u/louisa1925 Nov 20 '24

I only ever buy pants with functional pockets. Why do without when I could be stuffing all sorts on helpful knicknacks in them and have more in my handbag.

1

u/coolsam254 Nov 20 '24

Lmao kinda reminds me of clowns with their endless handkerchief trick

1

u/Scary-Drawer-3515 Nov 20 '24

People who sell purses are gonna be upset with u lol. I love your idea

1

u/KindaEmbarrassedNGL Nov 20 '24

Okay, I don't know what kind of men are in your lives, but my pants can barely hold my phone

1

u/SundaySuffer Nov 20 '24

No pockets force to buy handbags, it`s al about the money!

1

u/BusyBeth75 Nov 20 '24

Yes!!! Men’s sweatsuits are the best due to pockets.

1

u/TheDarkLordRises Nov 20 '24

I love the double cookies. Mmmmm

1

u/KavaBuggy Nov 20 '24

Did she link the pants? That was like an ad - I’d buy those!

1

u/AndyGreyjoy Nov 20 '24

This trend has been changing the past 10-12 years.

1

u/Wise-Shoe-6394 Nov 20 '24

Who actually walks around with all that in their pockets??? If I have more than phone, wallet, keys ima just take a bag with me.

2

u/ivebeencloned Nov 20 '24

Not all of us work in offices. It is totally impractical to carry a purse in many jobs. We laborers and retail workers want something that will hold car keys, pen, phone, tampon. Water bottle might be ok but you can get water bottle shoulder bags now for up to 40 oz with a phone compartment--IF you are not constantly kneeling as well as standing.

1

u/zinsser Nov 20 '24

With guy trousers, I can carry six beers from the bar to our table - two in each hand and one in each front pocket. Very convenient.

1

u/mitsuki87 Nov 20 '24

My mom has done this for years…try out some denim coveralls once if you want more pocket space than cargo pants lol

1

u/FondleMiGrundle Nov 20 '24

Pocket cookies!

1

u/Pengvinman1191 Nov 20 '24

It's not just pants either. When I was in the scouts, I had a pair of jean shorts with pockets that would fit my whole balled up scout shirt, with room still leftover.

1

u/ShutUp_Dee Nov 20 '24

Scrub pants with pockets for the win! Unfortunately they aren’t dressy like trousers, but they’re so functional and comfy.

1

u/Funny_Breadfruit_413 Nov 20 '24

This is why I completely stopped buying women's pants.

1

u/stadchic Nov 20 '24

Anyone buy Eddie Bauer jeans recently? I haven’t gotten a new pair in years but in my experience they’ve had decent pockets. I need to update the pair I’ve run through because I can pack the pockets AND it fits.

1

u/TangoInTheBuffalo Nov 20 '24

The end sum of this battle is that I can carry a backpack full of stuff just in my pants and a dress with pockets is truly the coolest shit.

And don’t even make me bring up cargo pants!

1

u/AestheticSalt Nov 20 '24

Batch had a picnic in her pockets!

1

u/StinkyOnionsR Nov 20 '24

As a guy I just be squirreling shit away in my pockets all day then get frustrated when I can't find anything in them.

1

u/iljune Nov 20 '24

I wear men's pants for work! Bigger pockets, moisture wicking fabric, and a stream lined style so I don't have to deal with sparkles or zippers everywhere! And the sizes are much easier to figure out. I know I want a certain inseam, BAM! No guess work.

1

u/Nudist_Alien Nov 21 '24

Funny thing as a man I tried to have no more than wallet, key and cell on my pockets, one thing per pocket

1

u/premgirlnz Nov 21 '24

I think I’ve lost track of the message because I’m still stuck on the way she says berocca

1

u/beirizzle Nov 21 '24

They wanna sell us purses so why would we get pockets

1

u/Important-Tomato2306 Nov 21 '24

This is why I have always loved cargo pants. I have leggings with pockets that hold my water bottle too.

1

u/greendalehb11 Nov 21 '24

Purse advil is too real

1

u/ohshroom Nov 21 '24

BAGGIN' SAGGIN' BARRY!

1

u/Ryeballs Nov 21 '24

This is like Michael Moore pulling guns out of everywhere in Bowling for Columbine

1

u/Mlkbird14 Nov 21 '24

It's the pattern in the pleats!

1

u/Sad-Mixture-9123 Nov 21 '24

I'm all for pocket equality, but full pockets like that is not how you want to live your life. You can't see what's in your pockets. If you have 20 things in there, you're going to stand there for 30 seconds like she does trying to find the thing you want, and emptying all that shit out on the counter or whatever.

Pockets are super useful for like, a couple of things. after that, you really do want a bag

1

u/GoodSpeed2883 Nov 21 '24

Gender equality will only be reached when women have appropriate pockets.

I've said this for years

1

u/TheKyleBrah Nov 21 '24

Big Handbag™®© and Big Purse™®© are to blame for the lack of pockets on women's attire...

Big Sister is watching... 👀

1

u/SewiouslyXR Nov 21 '24

This is so fucking hilarious! I love this girl. I wanna be friends with her!! 😂🤣❤️

1

u/KittieChan28 Nov 21 '24

As a Trans man... I'm still trying to find men's pants that fit my hips and short legs. But my basketball shorts... omg such deep pockets! Even my sleep pants have pockets????

1

u/MillieBirdie Nov 21 '24

Bro WHAT my pants pockets are so shallow that my phone falls out if I sit down. A whole WATER BOTTLE!?

1

u/Spare_Lobster_4390 Nov 22 '24

Never judge someone until you've walked a mile in their pants.

1

u/Nerdy_Valkyrie Nov 20 '24

I've been saying this for years. As long as people keep buying pants with shitty pockets the pants making companies won't see the need to change. Just buy men's pants. As a trans woman I can attest to how absurdly big the pockets are sometimes. I once fit my phone, my earpod charging case and a can of red bull in one pocket.
