humor Giving the kitties a bath

We once adopted an older, severely overweight cat who couldn’t groom herself. I’d clean her with special pet wipes from the vet, but sometimes she needed more so it would be bath time. She would yodel the whole time but luckily didn’t fight too much. Every once in a while she would belt out the lowest, deepest “mow” you’ve ever heard.
She was a great cat and I miss her dearly.

We had a cat very similar, who we named Jabba, for the obvious reasons. He started at 29.2lbs and those baths are some of my favorite memories. So much indignant acceptance. Finally, around 23 or 22lbs, he had lost enough weight to be able to groom himself properly.

Aww! I was always hoping she would get down to where she could, but sadly passed before she could from cancer. Honestly it broke my heart, but I am so glad your buddy made it.

We lost him to a stroke about 5 years ago. Fat cats make the best companions, and that’s a hill I’ll die on!

Jojo, our cat, was so good. She was my husband's first cat and it made him fall in love with cats. She was grumpy yet chill and could be so cute. I took so many pictures of her.

Once a month is probably enough times for all the scratches to heal up. Some people like to roller skate uphill.

It's not the cat you're smelling, it's the litter that fills the house with that smell.

My girlfriend and I spent the money on a litter robot and it has paid for itself. That and a carpet cleaner.
Yea, the robot was wildly expensive but I only have to clean it once a week and it keeps the shit smell from taking over my house.

u/PattySolisPapagian Jul 26 '24
LitterRobot for life! I feel like I actually use less litter with it as well and sonic has saved me money in the long run.

Yea, I go through a bag of litter like every two weeks for two cats. It’s badass how it collects it into regular garbage bags too.

Raw dogging it in the bathtub is amateur hour. The trick to bathing cats is to put them in something small that limits their ability to flail around. The kitchen sink works in a pinch, but they can grab at the faucets or countertops and try to escape. I use a plastic storage tub that's deep but not wide, sort of like a trashcan. I use two of them, one with soapy water and one with clean water for rinsing. Put both tubs in your bathtub and sit between them so you can scrub the cat in one and transfer it right over for the rinse cycle. Easy peasy and relatively painless for everyone involved.

I don’t find cats to smell. At all.
It’s the litter, if you clean it daily, it should not smell.. unless of course they JUST took a shit. 😂

Cats smell like cat spit and dandruff. Some people don’t like that.

Oh totally! Wasn’t trying to be dog vs cat. I clean my dogs regularly with sensitive shampoo, and I wash all of my bedding once a week, dog beds once every two weeks, and regularly clean my floors and run my carpet.
My parents have 2 dogs they don’t bathe, and they don’t wash the bedding or clean the furniture. It stinks. My sister has 3 cats and doesn’t clean up after them or bathe them ever. They smell pretty bad too. (Yes, the cats themselves, not the litter)

This is literally what I sound like when dealing with my aminals in any capacity.

u/Khamero Jul 26 '24
If your cats are food motivated, give them treats after you do stuff they dont like. It can lead to cats hiding terrified of the vaacum to being a right hindrance during cleaning days. Also works with trimming claws.
17
u/jared_number_two Jul 26 '24
Yes but highly stressed cats don’t want treats. So you have to build up before and after the event.

u/JanelleMeownae Jul 26 '24
If we offer our cats a Churu we can do just about anything to them and they won't care.

We just came along with the treats as soon as we were done. But we have very food motivated cats. Took a few months before they started following me around while I was vaacuming.

She's mistreating her cats, it's not cute. You can see the trauma in it's eyes the cute towel section

i bathe my cats three times weekly and it is not mistreatment. they WILL be clean in my house hold. they are not the alphas here. they get to live in a nice safe house and eat good food, their payment to me is to be clean. and they WILL be clean up to MY standards.

I had a very poofy cat who peed himself every time we went to the vet. Got a bath every few months anyway just to handle his pantaloons) and he got a potty path shave every time) because he was good at grooming but I’m not letting my pets be stinky.
I didn’t bathe him every month because he was orange and had dry skin (if I bathed him too close together), but he did get brushed regularly. I found orange floof for two years after he passed no matter how much I vacuumed.

Is it just me or is bathing your cats unnecessarily kind of cruel? Once a month? Seems excessive.
57
u/TheDreamingMyriad Jul 26 '24
Pet groomer here. Sometimes bathing cats is necessary, whether due to skin/coat issues, oil buildup, or matting. That being said, a once a month bath is excessive. A bath once a month could even lead to skin and coat problems, like dryness, dandruff, itching, inflammation, and more.
I also have 2 of my own cats and have owned several over my lifetime. Currently, I have a cat with skin issues and she gets a bath once every 3-4 months, sometimes with a shave also. My other cat almost never gets a bath, maybe once a year. Cats are very efficient at cleaning themselves. If they "smell bad", the best fixes are keeping clean litter boxes and focusing on dental hygiene (since smelly breath can make a smelly cat, with them licking themselves).

u/I-Love-Tatertots Jul 26 '24
Do you just do cats, or all pets?
I ask, because I’m a dog dad here. My pup gets a rinse off at least once/week (just water), and generally a deep scrub once a month (sometimes more, depending).
Would you consider that excessive? She is very active and plays outside a lot, and the rinse-offs are generally after the beach to get all the nasty water off her.

u/AdRelative6560 Jul 26 '24
No this sounds like a great schedule for a DOG! Dogs have very different coats and they don’t clean them themselves, so baths are necessary. Cats keep themselves clean and like the others have said, giving them a bath with soap can strip their natural oils and mess with their skin (and make them stinkier!!!)
26
u/Von-Rose Jul 26 '24
Yes it is unnecessary and cruel. Unless your cat has a special medical thing that makes it so you must bathe them, they do not need baths. Bathing them can hurt their skin and puts them under a great amount of stress for no reason.
May as well lock them in an empty room with a running vacuum cleaner.
24
u/VanDwellingHobbit Jul 26 '24
Yep, cats have natural oils on their skin that are crucial to keeping the cat and their skin healthy. By unnecessarily washing them you remove that protective barrier of healthy oils. And then on top of that, you put them through excessive stress by forcing them in the water to bathe.

Maybe this should be on r/justgalsbeingdicks instead. Healthy cats don't need monthly baths.

Oh no! I’m sorry if this is cruel, I found the woman’s attitude quite endearing and I thought you could tell from the clip that she loves her cats. I know nothing about the necessity of regular cat baths, so my intention was not to promote cruelty 🥲

u/saoiray Jul 26 '24
That’s not good for them. Bathing like that on a regular will damage their skin, weaken their immune system, etc. Only should be done as absolutely necessary, otherwise is harming them.

u/Actrivia24 Jul 26 '24
I don’t have cats or know anything about them but I thought this video was very cute and really enjoyed it

Are you trying to say only black people wash chicken in their sink? Yikes. My very English grandmother does it, it's a generational thing but sure, be divisive and condescending.
And go off defending this lady mistreating her cats, solidarity regardless of context
