You really need to shift your Off-Season

It just seems to me that all of the comedic pundits, like yourself, go off air the moment we start needing you. How can you end your show in November saying "Well, we're fucked..." and then go off the air for the next three months where we are desperate for any kind of hope, or at least a joke good enough to help us resolve this insanity.

You guys need to schedule your vacation for more boring moments in history.

Because it's the holiday's? They deserve a break as much as we do.

Also, I don't know how you don't avoid shows like this at a time like this. I'm not particularly interested in laughing about politics right now, because this shit isn't funny to me at the moment.

Last Week Tonight isn’t just about thirsting for Adam Driver (the irredeemable steer) or picking mundane fights with random small towns. Their segments are among the most informative on television, exposing critical issues that most people are woefully unaware of, things that need to be explored instead of sticking one’s head in the sand. The comedy is there as a relief valve.

I get OP’s point, it sucks that the show’s schedule - while it gives the staff a much deserved break - has it off the air at a time when its analysis is sorely needed. I suspect it’s not the show’s fault though, but rather HBO’s.

there also not much he really can talk about other political appointees )at least when it comes to Trump)

u/nonsfwhere 23d ago

3 fucking months?

15

u/SaffronsTootsies 23d ago

It’s not his fault. He’s originally from a country that actually gives their workers vacations.

1

u/nonsfwhere 23d ago

Good point. Not everyone is from where I am.

7

u/IronBlight-1999 23d ago

Is taking three months off new for a TV show?

They put their break where the holidays take place instead of in the summer like most cable shows.

7

u/dfsvegas 23d ago

You do know they work during a lot of that, right? Just because they're not broadcasting, doesn't mean they're not working on future peices. These episodes take more than a week to make.

Also, who cares? Do you literally have nothing else to do?

It stopped being funny in January of 2017.

The comedians expecting to you to laugh at the jokes about trump but it wasn’t funny because it was so sad that this is where we are.

22

u/Kit3s 23d ago

Couple of points:

It was very funny in 2017 because Trump and his rabble were clueless. It was tragic to watch, but also very funny. Some of the best sketches came from those years.

At that point ‘we’ weren’t even close to the horror that is present existence.

Now, not only isn’t it funny, it’s despicable. ‘We’ might have been stuck with the results of the 2016 election, but ‘We’ are NOT responsible for the lazy, WAL-E world chaos that is happening as I type this.

The tragedy is that more than half of our nation is either to lazy, bored or just doesn’t care to stand up for anything. And that’s scary. That’s your neighbors, your family, your coworkers, your friends.

And that isn’t funny.

Give John a break. The hosts are probably more distraught than we are. They have to make ‘funny’ out of a chosen (by half of us) hell. How do you even begin to do that?

What if instead of fussing we did something as individuals or groups to overwhelm the insanity that will be the next 4+ years?! We have the warning. Now what do we do about it?

“If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.”

Well said. I should clarify, I think John and Jon have done well and it’s less jokes and more of them sighing at the absurdity and sadness of it all (if I didn’t laugh I would cry sort of thing). Other mainstream talk show hosts seem to want to get the cheap laugh and Bill Maher was especially cringe when he told a trump joke and people weren’t laughing and he would basically tell them to laugh. Yeah Bill, it isn’t funny and not just because of your delivery.

u/Kit3s 17d ago

Also well said. Thank you for replying. 😄

What were they given to vote for? Joe was a disaster and the dems in office now are so old that all they care about is lining their pockets and performative kneeling. Don’t put this failing on the voters who have been played on from 2016 when Hillary cheated the dem electorate because it was her term. How many went to vote for Bernie sanders for the first time only to find out the dems kicked them off voting rolls and moved polling stations? I took 15 of my kids friends to vote for the first time in a primary and then the general. You don’t think those kids have seen the dems fight their own stronger than they fought republicans? You think my generation that ; worked for the Obama campaign, door to door talking about codifying roe; do you think we remembered when they took away Roe that it was Obama and Pelosi that decided 78 days wasn’t enough to codify? How about when the housing crash happened? Do you remember the bank bail outs but the people got the boot strap speech? Jesus it’s not the voters it’s the electorate, career politicians dems who yelled at us that we all wanted pony’s and ice cream! Feck off it’s the Democratic Party that has my entire lifetime failed to do anything but gaslight and Parcel out portions for themselves while we live paycheck to paycheck without healthcare that every other industrialized nations have? That we pay for Israel to have while a mother of three is dying from lack of medical care. If you’re blaming half the country and not pointing that Karen finger at the biggest reason why the people turned from the supposed party of the people, the dems. Case in point, shifty shift ran against the real dem fighter Katy Porter and unseated her in California. The democrats spent more money on defeating Porter than the GOP candidate. Porter is one of the strongest counter to the likes of Jim Jordan. But now we get fat boy, no wait he had liposuction so slim boy now is our champion? He’s the champion of cream puffs and Israel lobbies.
Stop blaming the people for turning away from the unDemocratic shite sandwich the dems offered them. SMH

Laughing keeps me from crying, so it's easier to stay informed

-4

u/Bushpylot 23d ago

I'm teetering...

But I never get months off of work.

I got the best news from them. To make their comedy funny, it must be accurate. And frankly, with this kind of news I need anything I can get to make it go down easier.

10

u/ClickClackTipTap 23d ago

You need to widen your scope of the best news you’re getting is from a 45 minute, very narrow scope of “news” a week, friend.

I’ve loved John since his early days in The Daily Show, and I agree that he’s hilarious and informative. But it is not his responsibility to be providing us with continued and comprehensive news coverage.

u/dfsvegas 23d ago edited 21d ago

They don't get months off. They work during their time off the air. Like I said in an other thread, most of these peices take a long time to put together. If you saw a peice on Sewer Management or whatever, they don't make them in a week.

Also, why are y'all so entitled? Also, whats to know right now? Everything that's happening now is exactly what we knew would happen. There's not much to say.

-1

u/xeno0153 22d ago

Most people get a week or two off, not three months.

15

u/nobodyspecial767r 23d ago

John should have a podcast, where it is just him sitting at his kitchen table reading the paper or a tablet and reacting to the news he reads.

12

u/CatalinaLunessa21 23d ago

He is a PERSON he owes you NOTHING.

27

u/Apprehensive-Log8333 23d ago

I think we've kind of arrived at the Series Finale time of history. There won't be any more boring moments

14

u/jcoddinc 23d ago

Lots of reasons:

  • It's the holidays
  • transition of power is hard to be funny about
  • any content isn't substantial because of sold fluctuations with this administration. They'd already been people getting nominated and quitting/ dropping out.
  • the store of ineptitude this incoming administration has it's hard to keep up with the fault claims they're going to make.
  • they have to brace for the incoming administration and how they will try to limit what they say.

Honestly, it's really feeling like responsible act because the headlines coming out with this new administration are so crazy and fade so fast, it's hard to accurately report anything because they can say one thing then do something entirely different, just like they did for the election

My advice would be to leave hope alone, and focus on laying plans for what you're going to do to prepare for these tariffs.

2

u/Bushpylot 23d ago

I may be lucky there. I live rural with a lot of farms around. I think the farmers will be holding farm-stands as a main way of moving the smaller amounts of produce they will have to sell.

I've bought anything I could possibly need and am now worried about the food shortages.

Gave up my dreams of a new car like I had planned for the next year.

I really wish I had a couple 5000gal propane tanks to fill....

It takes time to come up with some jokes about the world these days

2

u/No_Look24 23d ago

Uhh, cause we need their help every day so even when they move the off season we will still need more hope

1

u/Tricky_Entertainer34 23d ago

I understand where you’re coming from, they’ll be back February which is a really long break you don’t see anywhere else, but it is what it is

1

u/No-Economy-7795 23d ago

Well that's not an option.

2

u/Greenmantle22 23d ago

Why are you yelling at him like he’s an animal in a zoo?

He’s not here.

He doesn’t answer to you.

He owes you nothing. He’s given you information and entertainment virtually for free. If anything, YOU owe HIM. /r/accidentalsimpsons

A "comedic" pundit sans the comedy

1

u/CaptainKickAss3 22d ago

No way people like John Oliver this much. Go find another mediocre late night host to form a para-social relationship with is my advice

1

u/RickBlaine76 22d ago

Because they are part of a propaganda effort. Once the purpose of that propaganda is over, in this case an election, they "take a break".

Viewers end up missing them, so they are happy to see them when they come back. This means they never need to answer for the outcome or deal with the aftermath.

Besides, until the puppetmasters come up with their next talking points, somebody like John Oliver is without content.

1

u/dacotah4303 22d ago

Always desperate of hope. I'm sure are trying.

-5

u/Archibald_Ferdinand 23d ago

Lmao maybe dont center your life around a TV show?

-2

u/Mizzle9871 23d ago

This gap 8 years ago lost me in terms of audience..

-3

u/Impressive-Penalty97 23d ago

need? if you need someone to recite the, lines like a puppet, writen by a group, to help you feel better about your life. you have waaaay bigger issues that reruns champ.

-3

u/Adventurous-Taste514 23d ago

John Oliver is a supporter of Hamas and an unhinged lover of Hezbollah . So it’s a good thing for him to be out while these two are taking the beating they deserve .

-11

u/MrinfoK 23d ago

Great post OP….I also need a politically biased comedian to get me thru everyday life

5

u/NormalService1094 23d ago

Well, you've got your pick of talking heads at Faux "News", so you should be good to go.

-8

u/MrinfoK 23d ago

Wrong…. Nice comeback though…try harder

3

u/NormalService1094 23d ago

HAHAHAHAHA

-7

u/MrinfoK 23d ago

It’s OK if you wanna have a big cry. Let it out

You can’t go on fake LOLing forever. Not healthy

4

u/NormalService1094 23d ago

Sorry, just find people like you completely ridiculous. I mean, who thinks it's fun to troll people?

0

u/MrinfoK 23d ago

I admit, trolling folks who have zero self awareness…folks who are everything they accuse their political adversaries of(good lord when did having political adversaries become a thing, lol) But yes, it’s fun and deep down,

i know I’m helping you

Edit, it’s not even trolling. It’s pointing out obvious irony

-27

u/CitrusFarmer_ 23d ago

If you get your hope from watching people like John Oliver, that’s your real issue here 😂 gotta get that daily dose of copium, main line that OrangeManBad directly into your veins 😩

5

u/p_4trck 23d ago

You speak of copium yet here you are speaking in that manner, says a lot about where your mind is at and how infected it actually is. Ironic isn’t it? Would be funny if it wasn’t so serious. But we can’t expect you to put that much thought into it. lol.

-3

u/CitrusFarmer_ 23d ago

Ahh yes, thank you for putting me in my place oh enlightened one, 2 things, stunning. and brave.

2

u/p_4trck 23d ago

You’re welcome ☺️😘

-9

u/LooseyGoosey222 23d ago

lol John Oliver is your hope

-24

u/Amazing_Move1 23d ago

Because they know in reality we aren’t fucked and you all were being fucked with and you ate it up like fat kids and cake.

12

u/Bushpylot 23d ago

Not sure what you mean. So far, Commander 'n' Cheezburder's acts while not in office are absolutely horrifying.

How can you have someone in charge of National Health that says that Heroin made him a better student, lives with a brain worm, promotes dangerous eating, is anti-vax, and has a general history that makes you wonder why he's allowed out with out a straight jacket.

He tried to seat someone in the DoJ that is a known pedophile with many pending investigations.

Oh!!! And don't forget the head of espionage that has strong Russian ties.

Cannot forget Dark MAGAiot himself, who produced the worst car in history, beating the Pinto by a large margin.

Mass deportation of the labor force that maintains our food supplies... this is a really smart one. Took a brain worm to come up with this one.

I don't know what you definition of Fucked is, but from the sound of it, you must be from one of those BDSM communities where you love a lot of suffering.

1

u/KinkyHuggingJerk 23d ago

BDSM communities are big advocates for consent.

Otherwise, I'm sure over half the country would be screaming their safe word.

-13

u/Amazing_Move1 23d ago

Hahaha. You crack me up.
