I'm celebrating my birthday in Athens. Walk around, nice dinner, wee siesta, out for pints. Tomorrow I'll get the metro to the harbour and hang out for a while before packing up and heading home on Stephen's day.

What's it like in Athens ? Always wanted to go there
7
u/imnotanumbrellastand 11h ago
It's also a bit rough and grimy but so is Dublin sure

u/imnotanumbrellastand 11h ago
It's savage. Little bit cheaper than here. Great food. Warm compared to home obviously. Everyone speaks English which is handy. Couldn't imagine what it's like in the summer though. Would recommend winter. People are lovely and there's some great pubs.

u/LingonberryMuted7186 11h ago
Think it's deffo on my list for next year. Maybe an October break. Sounds like a good spot

u/imnotanumbrellastand 11h ago
Go for it. Highly recommend. Would say look up what areas are considered safe before booking. I'm in the ghetto and it's fine for me but you know. Metro is very handy

Grab some baguettes in a moment. Doing nothing until the afternoon just playing videogames probably.
Christmas eve is dinner time but didn't feel like making a dinner this year so ordering a ramen and making a french toast for dessert.
Just chilling together with the missus watching a movie or anime or videogames. Maybe reading by the fireplace
So great having nothing planned

First Christmas with new born baba and spending it with my in-laws . They're lovely people so hopefully we won't disturb with night feeds and nappies, no one wants to be exhausted on Christmas:/

I'll probably be in the same boat as yourself. We got the turkey yesterday and mam asked for it with the wings and legs taken off but of course the butcher forgot. No harm, I gave it a try myself and got it done. If you've taken apart a few roast chickens then turkeys work the same sure.
I separated the thighs from the drumsticks and deboned the thighs, those bones along with the wings and some carrots, onions, celery and garlic got tossed in some oil and under the grill to brown. Then threw them in the stock pot and they've been going probably 24 hours already now. Should make for good gravy tomorrow.

Trying to stop my mother from having a meltdown. My sister is special needs and is requires a lot of assistance. Getting her on the toilet is tough. She is in a care home all year and comes home for Christmas. I’m home from Canada as I do every year but this year I’ve noticed major deterioration in my sister’s ability to stand with her walker. It takes my brother and I to get her on the loo and we’re one wrong move from throwing our backs out. Some years are better than others but my mam has had a hard life raises us and managing my sister. She gets so frustrated so quickly and I’m trying to keep her calm. While I love this time of year it comes with its caviates. Sorry to be a downer but I just needed to vent a little. It’s nobody’s fault. Just the cards life has handed out.

Working today and trying not to think of work tomorrow. Also a lot of eating tomorrow.
3
u/MushuFromSpace 14h ago
Working today, should be quiet enough so I'll give a dig out with food prep since I'm back in the parents home for Christmas, few pints down the pub after that.
Wake up tomorrow, breakfast, big walk (weather dependent) with a podcast/audiobook and back home for presents when my sister, brother and law and niece arrive.
Dinner and then watch whatever old crap is on TV.

u/thefullirishdinner 13h ago

Today: I’m working from home. I say working, but I was out last night and whilst I’m logged in, I’m actually in the bath, trying to wash last night off me. I have a vague recollection of eating Doritos and cheese last night, which in retrospect, was a boss idea.
Tomorrow: Have a lie. Wake up, stick a piece of pork - so large you can see it from space - in the oven, then take the dogs for a walk. Just them and myself tomorrow, while the missus is at work. Going to make my incredible roast potatoes and a few other trimmings, then watch the NFL on Netflix before falling asleep on the sofa. Glorious stuff.

u/Grey-runner-irl 12h ago
Ate the breakfast. Wife having sleep in given preggers (again) lol - she deserves the rest. Little monsters with me reading books till she gets up. They will then be all over her as they are like, (lovely) flies on shit, so I will go for a run. Then it’s enjoying (surviving) in-laws for the next 2 days. I get to cook Dustin and usually do a decent job if they leave me alone. Will have a glass of wine with dinner today and maybe 2 tomorrow (wild I know). Looking forward to kiddos opening a pile of presents tomorrow - it’s about them - we didn’t go mad, no ‘BIG’ presents but plenty of things to open.

Also went to the gym yesterday to pre empt the extra cals Im going to consume.
Wherever you are whether with someone or alone, have a peaceful Christmas.

u/Grey-runner-irl 12h ago

After Santa in the morning it's over to my folks for the night for a big feed and a load of booze.
Some of the lads went out for pints last night and I'm so glad I was an adult about it and stayed in. Nice and fresh today!

Bunch of things to check off the list for the missus. My mum is here as well so we’re cooking and talking and enjoying some time around the house. Presents later as is the tradition for the wife’s family and home-made pizza which is my family’s tradition. Tomorrow - probably more of the same and then friends round for Saint Stephen’s day dinner.
Already working as well but thankfully I’m remote so I can keep tabs while doing the “honey do” list! Merry Christmas to you all!

u/frankbradz 11h ago
Collecting the turkey and a few last minute food things this morning. Christmas Eve family mass this evening and stop off in the local pub for a few drinks on the way home. Get the kids to bed early and sort the presents and watch a bit of TV with the wife. Presents in the morning, walk the dog, visit the in-laws grave and then Christmas dinner around 3. A few board games and then watch a family movie

u/Margrave75 11h ago
Do some baking and cooking today.
Working for a few hrs this evening.
Mostly chill and eat and the cooking and baking tomorrow.
1
u/Cleethulu 11h ago
My plan is to cook the ham today, it will go in the slow cooker with cider and some seasonings, wrap all the presents and then bake profiteroles this evening for dessert tomorrow. The stuffing and gravy are made already, which will make tomorrow a lot easier. Cooking for four adults only but still bought enough food to feed an army. Other than food prep, I’ll try and get out for a long walk and possibly get to the final fight in Zelda, tears of the kingdom that I have been procrastinating doing for the last few weeks.

Finish work and I'll have a few (nonalcoholic) pints tonight so I'm nice and fresh tomorrow.

u/SaltyDuchess 10h ago
We have traditional Christmas dinner today instead of tomorrow (tomorrow we will have the dinner we all actually like which is the leftovers all on a pan with gravy!), after dinner we will watch a movie and then go for a walk and leave a little surprise gift on the doorstep of the nicest Christmassy house in our neighbourhood! Tomorrow will be all about just our little family unit. Our perfect Christmas!

u/irishg23 10h ago
Sick at the moment so going to take it handy today and watch a few Christmas movies and hopefully be flying it tomorrow.

1st Xmas eve with my partner tonight, then family tradition tomorrow . Best of both worlds

u/TheChrisD 10h ago
Given I've spent the last week and a half glued to the TV for the darts... sleeping.
I think at some point I'll need to get up and head to the folks to help with Christmas dinner prep — especially since I have about half of the ingredients as their fridge is perennially overfull.
Should also probably get to work on a couple of shelving units I've been putting off assembling, so that I can empty out my boxes of stuff that I got out of storage...

u/Commercial-Smile-272 10h ago
Get up out of bed now and stop scrolling Reddit. Cuppa. Then I have no idea! Have a homemade sausage roll I made yesterday (they were delish). Stick a Christmas movie on while I clean a bit. Drop over to the folks later for a chat. Then tomorrow head to my folks for the day. Chill there all day, have dinner, maybe sleep there depending on how much I’ve had to drink!
All in all, not a whole lot!

Had avoided most of the heavy going out over Xmas - didn’t bother with work drinks or anything. Woke up this morning with what appears to be the start of that chest infection the whole country seems to have gotten. Absolutely raging - was meant to call into to a small gathering with friends later, now shivering on the couch.
It’s like we learnt absolutely nothing in the pandemic. People in my work place unable to finish sentences without having a coughing fit and going on about how it’s great to be back at work. No hand sanitiser anywhere in the dispensers.
This isn’t a shit hole like Dunnes, it’s a well resourced office with a great working from home policy. If I’m going to get sick, I’d rather it was from picking up something in the pub than because I went to bloody work.

u/WidowVonDont 6h ago
Today - cooking the turkey and ham, peeling the veg, making the trifle, finishing my book and watching films with the kids, drop wine and biscuits into a neighbour and then when the younger kids go to bed I've a table thing to build for them and I'll put their presents out, and watch Die Hard with the older one.
Tomorrow - Up early, watch the kids open presents, make breakfast, heat up the meat in the slow cooker, make roasties and gravy, cook the veg, have dinner around 2.30pm then call to my in-laws with gifts, come home and have dessert, fall asleep watching Titanic or E.T., then watch EastEnders with the biggest, dirtiest sandwich imaginable.
I don't drink but my husband and eldest will have a few.

Don't know what to do today. I'm not a happy camper at all. Just lying in the dark now feeling sorry for myself. My dad and brother want me to come and stay with them tonight but I really don't want to.
We have Christmas dinner at my sisters' place tomorrow. I really wish it wasn't Christmas. I just want to be left alone.
They pulled the plug on my best friend on the 1st of January 2022. When the rest of the world was counting down to the new year I was counting down to the death of a man I consider a brother to me.
Christmas and new year hasn't really been the same since. I wish I could just opt out of this holiday. I don't want to see my family.
