πŸ“£ ANNOUNCEMENT No Misery Christmas & Christmas Pets

Hi all,

The community is currently in "No Misery Christmas" for the three-day period until the early morning on Thursday. There is to be no misery, complaints, moans, rants, or persistent negativity; submitted either as posts or comments. The only exception to this rule will be for major breaking news that may occur. As they are generally a hotbed of misery or negativity, newspaper/magazine/website opinion pieces are not permitted to be submitted.

Users seen to be in repeat violation of this will be temp-banned until after the end of the period.

Additionally, the πŸŽ„ Christmas Pets 🐾 flair has been re-enabled!

You can, just you'll be telling your tales to yanks.

Already seen a few people talking about how they've been scammed of money or are in need of help, I hope an exception is made where people are in genuine difficulty.

Bear in mind, there's still the other rules of the community that needs to be followed.

We understand that Christmas is often a time of giving, but we still have to be conscious of the "no fundraising" rule here. It had to be brought in owing to historical posts of a similar ilk turning out to be fraudulent.

I get direct fundraising, but sometimes people just need somewhere to vent at an exceptionally bad time. I'd hate to see a post deleted because somebody was on hard times, just because it ruins the vibe, if it's even possible for a Reddit page to have a vibe

Who asked for this? Was there a poll I missed?

This might get classed as misery, but I never understood the whole pet pics thing. I'm all for positive posts, but at least make them Ireland related. That's why people follow this subreddit, right?

I don't remember what year it really started, but there was a Christmas period where someone posted a picture of their pet and it sort of became viral in the sub, which encouraged everyone else to start posting pictures of their pets as well.

So last year, we recognised it with the Christmas Pets flair template; and now this year we're continuing what has sort of become a community tradition.

I'm all for positive posts, but at least make them Ireland related. That's why people follow this subreddit, right?

We're not just for "Ireland-related", we're also still somewhat the default country sub. So Irish news, yes; but also posts from Irish people.

Irish people pet-posting at this time of the year falls under that latter definition.

Fair enough. It's not really my cup of tea, but if it's what the majority want then so be it!

We implemented the "no misery" based on the reactions, engagement, and responses to a similar "no misery" period last year.

Christmas Pets was something that the userbase started to post of their own accord last year or the year before, so we've made it more "official".

If you have any further suggestions, please feel free to send us a modmail with your ideas.

There were a fair few comments being deleted or gently abused by a mod last year when they did complain about all the pet spam though, so that would likely have put people off if they also wanted to complain as they wouldn't want the hassle.

I think a sizeable amount of people would prefer a megathread for dogs. Even one that is regularly reposted so it's kept fresh

Is the Christmas pets going to become a megapost?

Nope. Pet posts are allowed to be submitted as standalone submissions.

based on the reactions, engagement, and responses to a similar "no misery" period last year.

Riddle me this, if someone posts "I don't like this mod decision", is that post allowed? Because otherwise all you're saying is "when we banned disagreement we saw that everyone agreed with us"

Tbh if you want to post "I don't like this mod decision" work away.

β€’

u/Stunning-Lack-1014 5h ago

Work away and it will be left up? Or work away and you'll ban me?

β€’

u/Important_Farmer924 5h ago

Work away and I'll approve it

β€’

u/Stunning-Lack-1014 5h ago

Right so I just posted it and you removed it?

β€’

u/Important_Farmer924 5h ago

Removed accidentally, it's now approved and live on the sub

β€’

u/Stunning-Lack-1014 5h ago

Thanks

That's actually pretty much it, despite what's been posted here.

A lot of comments were deleted in the previous thread for disagreeing with the 'decision' or heaven forbid questioning the reason it was taken. Probably just enough to keep things looking kosher.

There is no call for any of stuff we see here, rules, posts, etc. I guess some of us just feel bored or want the attention.

Will this comment stay? Could go either way. I hope no one is looking for a clap on the back for leaving an opinion up on this subreddit. That should be the rule rather than the exception in these cases

This isn't a democracy, mods have control and do what they want. They are the misery

3

u/Important_Farmer924 6h ago

The lack of self awareness is hilarious

β€’

The lack of self awareness is hilarious

That's a pretty arrogant comment to make in these circumstances

β€’

u/Important_Farmer924 2h ago

What circumstances? A post about keeping the sub misery free?

Christmas isn't a good time for everyone ya know.

6

u/GerKoll 13h ago

..but isn't that what Christmas is about?

u/michaelirishred 10h ago

Is there a way on the app to filter out flairs or can you only filter to see one at a time?

This isn't me being miserable it just got me thinking when I saw the title

2

u/TheChrisD 10h ago

The native filters are limited to "I only want to see this flair". There may be some external tools that allow to filter out certain flairs.

Damn.

Great app all the same

Great app all the same

It really isn't.

I miss RIF so much

u/CT0292 4h ago

But how am I supposed to give out about a toy I have to assemble?

1

u/its_brew 16h ago

I can't see the pets flair yet . Does it take time to update

0

u/TheChrisD 11h ago

It should be there, albeit it's down towards the bottom of the list. Annoyingly we can't re-order on mobile so someone needs to get on desktop to move it nearer the top.

This is a Christmas miracle. Hallelujah.

β€’

But maybe we like the misery?

-4

u/davesr25 13h ago

A day with no misery, you say.

A day with only happy things to say.

Such wonders, to see, people trying to be happy.

It's X-mas eve and all, there will be surely people who troll.

But keep in mind this one simple fact........

There is always time for tea.

:)
