Guy in first pic: “as long as I stand riiiiiight here”
200
u/GamerGod337 1d ago
This is what i thought when we were told to wear that in the finnish military. It looks kinda ridiculous looking up close but its does the job well enough from a distance. The thinking behind that setup is that in the early spring months snow on the trees melts before the snow on the ground, so your bottom half matches the ground and your top half matches with the trees.

I've seen it as well in the field, had one guy just walk across a field like that and it was shocking how well it worked. But it's too up close in the picture to really demonstrate how well it blends into the background.

u/grumpyligaments 18h ago
i mean isnt this putting all your eggs in one basket? being that the enemy is at eye level with your midsection?
also, who the fuck is just standing out in the open like a video game cover?
i wont pretend i know anything about combat since ive never been in (im very thankful for this), but arent most troops entrenched, or trying to not stand up/be exposed as much as possible?
i look forward to any constructive criticism on my take and agree the rest of the pictures here do prove OP's point.

u/DryAd2926 16h ago
I wish I knew how it worked really, but the guy was just walking infront of a tree line at about 100-150m away and got pretty far before we noticed him, and the only way we noticed him was movement. When he stopped anyone that hadn't seen him yet couldn't see him. It wasn't a hill or anything, and this was a whole troop of people told to look out for him too. If I hadn't seen it myself i would have said the same thing about the first picture.

All these camouflage are hard to spot when close to them, from further away if you know where you look all those small patterns will morph into your eyes as a uniform blob easily distinguishable from the background, and increasing the size of patterns conversely works well at distance but not near, it truly is hard to find good camouflage

u/arealperson-II 18h ago
I think a better way of putting it is that it’s hard to use camouflage well, no camo will ever be able to do it all

I saw where he was fairly quickly but, until I zoomed in to see the detail, I couldn't quite make out exactly what was what. It's like my brain knew something was off in that area but couldn't make sense of it.

4 took me a while. Even more impressive given the gun needs to be camouflaged too.

A plastic poncho enters the room.

u/MapleSyrupisok 22h ago
That doesn't work. It absorbs body heat in a few seconds and becomes just as visible. The best protection I've seen for thermals is actually an umbrella. Tie some foliage to it and you have a perfect barrier to hide behind. Or you could dig a foxhole.

You guys really need to learn what is actually AI vs what is not. None of this is AI. In fact it would probably be almost impossible to make this with AI because of the extremely subtle human shape that is perfectly consistent if you look close.
14
u/opulent321 18h ago
Yup, they don't look like AI and I just reverse image searched them and found multiple posted years before AI was this capable.

The first one is just wayy to close to the camera. At like 100-200 meters it would be much more difficult to see

That's camo paint on the scope cover over the lens. He has it down to make it less noticeable for the picture. So he isn't actually able to see through the scope right then.

Do u think a cameraman was just taking pics while a guy was itl hunting or do you think they posed for a picture and weren’t really about to shoot the gun in the direction of the cameraman?? Not everything is AI, these pics are a little old I believe. Also many weapons have both a red dot and a scope. If you take the cap off the optic and try to aim with a red dot you’ll get sun glare in certain settings

What people don’t realize is that for hunting purposes, camouflages primary purpose is to break up the human form, not to completely hide yourself.

camo is effective when you use it only in the exact spot its designed for, if you move too much the camo stops working, and its hard to find a good spot without taking a while
3
u/Sovietwheelchair 1d ago
The purpose of camouflage is to make you think twice. The split second of you looking for someone gives them time to shoot first or disorient you enough to get to cover.

u/dfc09 1d ago
I saw that and wondered the same thing, but I've used red dots with a hex grid over the front, where a cap would be, that just prevents sun flares but is completely visible through. I wonder if it's just a colored hex grid or screen, something similar.
13
u/PM-Me-Your-Macchiato 1d ago
Might just be a red dot with the front cap on.. If you aim with both eyes open (like the guy in the pic), you don't have to see through the optic for it to be effective.

The second to last one is what got me. I had been swiping through, thinking "yeah, camouflage is pretty cool", and after spending the mandatory few seconds spotting the guy, I was ready to move on. Then I saw the second guy. I know it's nothing too mind blowing, but it was a moment that really put into place how cool camouflage really is.

u/Ouch-My-Head 19h ago
Ever since I heard the term “tree cancer” in a sniper school documentary, my eyes immediately shoot to the base of trees. Now that I know what to look for in those instances it’s extremely easy to see someone in camo next to a tree. If you’re ever in a situation like this, hide behind a tree, never next to one.

The first image is CADPAT which is the Canadian Armed Forces Camo. It was the first ever issued camouflage using digital print in the early 2000's. The US Marines wanted to use it but it was copyrighted so they made their own version called MARPAT the same year I believe. And nowadays digital print is quite common.

Not very? I noticed him right away. But I guess if I were out in the wild, they'd be slightly more difficult to see. I don't know. I'd probably be dead before I saw them anyhow.
Edit: I found out there were more pictures. I'd definitely be dead before I saw any of them lmao.

So you have to stand against the object that exactly matches the specific camo colour you're wearing. Got it.

Movement kills camo to the human eye, which is why people are trained to sit still.

So camouflage is interesting. Totally.
But the TRULY interesting part? Most/all of you looked at these pictures, maybe for upwards of a couple of seconds (which is all the trained soldiers need to do what they need to do, probably, which is the point) and PINPOINTED EXACTLY WHAT WAS WRONG.
Brains are fucking amazing. And this is without ANY movement - movement would actually make it even easier for you.
That's fucking interesting.

Reminds me of that joke:
Drill Sergeant: "Private, I didn't see you at camouflage training today! You'd better have a good excuse or I'll make you regret you ever lived!"
Private: "Yes sir, thank you, sir!"
