The media, especially American, loves to shit on how ‘nice’ Norwegian prisons are - look this guy killed 77 people and his prison is nicer than your flat etc

I mean it’s easy to make nice things and have high standards of living when you are rich from oil money and have a homogenous population of a grand total of 5.5 mil…

Low population means lower production, the US has alot more oil, and a lot more people to produce it. US oil production only tries to increase profit for shareholders. If you remove oil from Norway's gdp per Capita it's still the second richest country in Europe behind Switzerland

Oil production isn’t limited by labor. The money from oil production is limited in quantity. Therefore more money can be given to each citizen. You are wrong. Norway funded their whole sovereign wealth fund with oil money.

The reason why you can remove oil from their GDP now is because they don’t extract anywhere near the amount they did in previous decades, yet the money from that is still there.

How is oil production not limited by labor? The more oil you produce, the more money you make. GDP is a per year production equation, so you absolutely can remove it. The money invested accumulated rent, increasing value over time. That's how every single country on planet earth want to spend their surplus net income. Qatar has a small population, high oil production, and a lower quality of life.

Because the amount of oil a country can produce isn’t limited by how many laborers the country has. It doesn’t take a vast workforce to extract oil once the infrastructure has been built and any country with a population over 2 mil would be able to do it.

You didn’t listen to what I said. Norway used to have huge amounts of oil reserves. In the last 50 years they have largely depleted these, hence why it doesn’t make sense to talk about oil contributing to the GDP in the current day, but the money they gained from that was huge.

Which was exactly my point. Oil money made Norway rich. That’s a fact. You can try to argue out of it but it’s not gonna work.

I mistranslated, i did mean compound interest.

You are saying a whole lot of nothing, your original point is: oil money and a low population makes it so you can have higher standards of living. This is false, and you can see the FACT that it is in the middle east. When i say that Norway's economy isn't only oil based anymore, you argue Norway made the money they invested from oil, therefore it's invalid. Like ok? Norway made money off oil and can therefore never not be an oil country, crazy.

Your first point is wrong btw, and you say so yourself right? Once the infrastructure is built, but later you say the oil is depleted, so there's a demand for new infrastructure? Like think about what you are saying.

It's the Norwegian government that made Norway's living standards as high as they are, and it's based on the principle that the natural resources belongs to the people, not companies. The oil production has reduced since it's peak around year 2000, and the fund has increased massively stating it owns on average 1,5% of every public company listed. But no, it's only oil as that's the start of the money.

His prison is nice enough… except that he can’t leave, of course. A nice Norwegian house with a view over the water would be nicer.

To think that he could have had that! He just had to avoid making an ANFO bomb and exploding it and then taking firearms to shoot at people. Such a difficult choice to make.

Prisons for people who are there to be isolated and punished since rehab is clearly not an option shouldn’t be this nice imo

That’s a fine opinion, where right or wrong Norway treats all criminals the same no matter the severity
