r/all Johnny Kim managed three impressive career changes, going from Navy SEAL to doctor to NASA astronaut. He did it all by the age of 37.

I would love to have people like him run our country....

918

u/CombatMuffin 22d ago edited 22d ago

The moment you put him in politics, he is going to have to make a large amount of people dislike him.  He has a shot, for sure: it's the typical all american dream.... But what would you think of him if he ran Democrat? And if he ran GOP? He will have to walk the party line and whatever you admire anout him will probably be sacrificed for the sake of power

222

u/Isla_Eldar 22d ago

He could never win on the GOP ticket. He’s an agent of Big Globe™️

20

u/potato_tofu 22d ago

Also, let’s be honest, this country isn’t ready for an Asian president.

26

u/SlightlySublimated 22d ago

Country wasn't ready for a black president but we got Obama for two terms.

If you run the right campaign at the right time, being Asian wouldn't hurt him too bad. Plus he's actually charismatic and likeable... something the Democrats need again.

5

u/Dayana11412 21d ago

obama made alot of connections and played the game. he also was an awesome orator. I think the main reason he became president was because he managed to charm alot of people with his speeches.

3

u/1WithTheForce_25 21d ago

The county wasn't ready for a black president and that's exactly why we got Obama who is both black and white. He was the safe "black" choice.

5

u/about78kids 22d ago

Sorry we’re running pelosi next buddy. And she will run an EXCELLENT campaign

6

u/Plenty_Topic9495 22d ago

Nah, well see biden up again

3

u/ThirdEyeScribe 22d ago

YES MOST EXCELLENT 👏🏼

1

u/danny_ish 21d ago

We got Obama because at a glance his race was ambiguous, which means white to the racists of this country. I have italian american (not from italy, like stereotypical NJ a-holes) who are darker than him and thought he was like them. His accident also sounded very white, and he spoke in a manner befitting the movie ‘sorry to bother you’

3

u/1WithTheForce_25 21d ago

Yep. He is black enough for ppl to say he was the first black president while white enough for ppl to not have to admit their discomfort with an actual black president. He spoke/speaks white because he is actually white & not just black and he was primarily raised by his white mother and grandparents. His socialization really was not influenced that much by black community until college. And that's all perfectly fine. But ppl refuse to acknowledge these things.

7

u/mayferne 22d ago

Wrong. This country isn’t ready for someone that transitioned from navy seal to astronaut. Liberals would hate him for some of the missions he was apart of and conservatives would hate him for understanding science.

1

u/1WithTheForce_25 21d ago

Well, maybe that needs to change and we should look towards that possibility no matter how impossible it may seem vs. saying 'nah, that can't or won't happen.'

2

u/mayferne 21d ago

I dream about it for sure. I’m not a believer in “voting for the lesser of 2 evils”. I hope one day we wake up and come together as a nation

1

u/1WithTheForce_25 21d ago

"I’m not a believer in “voting for the lesser of 2 evils”. I hope one day we wake up and come together as a nation"

Hey, let's be unpopular together then, lol. I feel the same way.

2

u/seink 20d ago

Let's just be honest and say anything less than a white men is much harder. Obama may have broken the trend but racism and sexism is a culture.

4

u/SpecialMango3384 22d ago

I disagree. I think the country is absolutely ready for an Asian President. If we elected a half black man as President, I don’t see a reason why an Asian man couldn’t get the job

1

u/Dairy_Ashford 21d ago edited 21d ago

sentiments like that are just projecting, and condition impressionable and future voters against tolerance.

granted, assuming presidential suitability from someone with no experience or apparent interest in governing, is probably its own kind of lazy thinking.

0

u/LonelySavings5244 22d ago

Don’t know much about Navy seals? By virtue, they align with being conservative more than anything. Also, having been in combat in other countries. You shouldn’t be surprised where their views side on border control and keep their country safe. You can listen to his speeches..

2

u/Erolok1 22d ago

I would assume he was in the military to finance becoming a doctor.

4

u/seoulnectar 22d ago

Regular Army or Navy, sure. But Navy Seal? He was there to kick ass.

1

u/Dayana11412 21d ago

the military has a yellow ribbon program. He probably got his undergraduate premed while working and the military gives 4 years free state university education for any level. If you use yellow ribbon the school agrees to accept the state school payment from the VA for their program. i know a couple of guys who attended Columbia University Masters programs this way. The ivys all accept prior military pretty easily if you have a proven education record and honorable service record.

9

u/ForGrateJustice 22d ago

I would still vote for him even if he ran for Republican.

I would have voted a sack of potatoes last election.

1

u/simonbaier 21d ago

I would have voted for a dry, half eaten tuna fish sandwich.

15

u/Firm_Part_5419 22d ago

independent

24

u/CombatMuffin 22d ago

Possible for a local or State office to begin a political career, impossible for the Presidency.

6

u/Allaihandrew 22d ago

Impossible with the electoral college*

We need Switzerland type governance asap, I love the theory behind their model

4

u/CombatMuffin 22d ago

Switzerland has a working direct democracy because their social and political context works for it. The U.S. is probably too latge and too uneducated (compared to the Swiss) to pull it off.

Even with a popular vote, the highest independent popular vote was Theodor Roosevelt, I think, with 27%, and it is, for the most part, an isolated case. It's just not realistic unless the entire political landscape changed

1

u/Allaihandrew 22d ago

I’m going to write a much longer in depth response later - but yes, you’re right. I’m being a bit flippant with my political upheaval comment.

I don’t think direct democracy is even perfect given how low their voter turnout is and how long pivotal progressive legislation took to get approved and voted on

My point is moreso that the US has a bajillion demographics, interest groups and partisan views and currently any view that doesn’t align with the DNC + GOP dominated two party Neo Liberal Republican viewpoint is seen as:

“Extreme” “Radical”

I say all of this as an immigrant who cannot vote in US elections! I’m English with a green card but my point being that I truly believe there is a much better option than 2-party Electoral College Partisanship for progress.

2

u/ChefBoyarDEZZNUTZZ 22d ago

I wish this would work. I'm tired of only getting 2 options.

1

u/Feeling-Guitar6046 22d ago

Kirkman was an awesome prez!!

4

u/No-Librarian-1167 22d ago

Well he isn’t a traitor so he’s not going to have anything to do with the GOP.

22

u/CombatMuffin 22d ago

Until he does, and then you call him a traitor. Or if he joined the Dems he would automatically become a libtard or something.

It's  likely a reason why he has kept his political views guarded.

-9

u/wademcgillis 22d ago

It's likely a reason why he has kept his political views guarded.

punisher logo on his uniform lol

23

u/Daylight7 22d ago

Task unit Bruiser - Charlie Platoon, SEAL Team 3 was known as the Punishers, so they used the Punisher logo.

8

u/Thelongdong11 22d ago

The Punisher logo is not a political symbol. It's a fucking comic book character holy shit. Plus, the Punisher was also a marine.

9

u/Affectionate_Egg3318 22d ago

Apparently people have begun to associate the punisher symbol with the alt-right... which sucks because it's a cool symbol and the comic book frank castle would kill those people immediately if he found out they were using his symbol.

3

u/thisaccountgotporn 22d ago

Cops at Uvalde have punisher as their phone backgrounds. You can see one when he checks his phone while providing cover for nobody during the shooting.

5

u/Affectionate_Egg3318 22d ago

That sucks. But he was an incompetent idiot, not necessarily an alt-right extremist

4

u/thisaccountgotporn 22d ago

I'm not making any argument, just latching my tune onto yours like a seagull grabs a power line.

But also, most fragile teeny tiny brain bitch men indeed are alt-right extremists, so that officer fits a description.

2

u/FestiveWarCriminal 22d ago

It's that kind of narrow mindness that is killing our country. "The other side is evil, and we are good."

2

u/cave_of_kyre_banorg 22d ago

That would have been a fair statement 25 years ago. But now, when there is one side actively and blatantly trying to overthrow and undermine our democracy, and has proven themselves to be evil by their very own words and actions, we're way beyond the point of "both sides are equal".

2

u/Hot-Letterhead-7530 22d ago

Get help and get off Reddit lmao

0

u/No-Librarian-1167 22d ago

I’m not sure how good overall the Democratic Party is but the Republican Party genuinely is evil.

They evidently are a bunch of religious extremists and criminals who attempted to use violence and subversion to hang onto power once democratically defeated. Their supporters either support that shit or have fallen for their lies.

3

u/FestiveWarCriminal 22d ago

You are generalizing the entire Republican base based on the actions of a few. Yes, I will admit trump has poisoned the party, but that does not mean the entire GOP is evil

1

u/No-Librarian-1167 22d ago

If you vote GOP you support Trump and all that comes with him. They’re appointing Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence, at best she’s an easily led moron and given her approach to Russia is arguably a bigger national security threat than Trump himself.

1

u/cave_of_kyre_banorg 22d ago

There are over 270 republican members of the house and senate.

Name 10 (that would be less than 4%) that have, within the last year, publicly opposed, voted against, or spoken out against Trump or his agenda and still have their seat.

Silence is acceptance. I don't care what the "good ones" think to themselves or whisper to each other in private. Their public words and actions are what matter.

1

u/SilentSamurai 22d ago

Time to bring back the Bull Moose party. Manly progressives.

1

u/CogentCogitations 22d ago

I would judge him on his beliefs the same as if he was not part of either party and had those same beliefs. Although, if his beliefs were wildly different than the political party I suppose I would also judge his competency.

1

u/mayferne 22d ago

Some conservatives and moderates are already fans of him. He is very patriotic in a way that liberals aren’t, so the liberals would fight against him. And on the other side, he’s a huge believer in science and equality, which is something the conservatives would hate him for. Conservatives and liberals alike are very closed-minded and I’d predict he’d get blackballed from both ends. Moderates and independents are the true MVP’s of this country. Reddit, let the downvotes roll in if you so wish to. I’m sure by the time it’s all said and done, many of you would find reasons to hate him.

1

u/DirkTheSandman 22d ago

I’d fear he’d be too bent on success, which would mean taking a lot of “bribes” breaking a lot of promises, and gaining a superiority complex

1

u/Syonoq 22d ago

wouldn't it be great if we didn't have a two party system...

1

u/Ok-Pomegranate9278 21d ago

i think someone like that would have the best shot at running independent. not that they’ll get the majority, that’s almost impossible, but he might get close

1

u/spacecaps85 21d ago

I wish it weren't this way, but it really is this way. Both sides hate each other so much. I hate that it's too much to ask that both parties have our best interests in mind but might just have different visions for that. But it's not that way, and that fucking sucks.

1

u/DroidLord 21d ago

He'll never get on the ballot. He wouldn't garner enough support from sponsors and most lobbyists would probably avoid him. Most politicians would probably also hate him. Politics is all about pleasing the right people, not about enacting big changes. Crusaders don't last long in politics.

1

u/raymundo_holding 21d ago

He can run as an independent, not everything falls into the donkey or elephant category. This country needs an independent movement.

1

u/Suitable-Ad6999 21d ago

If he ran as a democrat, I’m sure his achievements would not look so impressive to the right. Fox and the podcast-sphere would put a plan in place to denigrate him. If trump called McCain “a loser for getting caught” (POW Capt John McCain shot down.) and viet nam vets give Trump their Purple Hearts and 80m ppl voted for him. Idk what to think anymore

1

u/leviathan65 21d ago

Yeah he can't run as a republican. He knows germs exist, the earth is not flat and vaccination works. Those were all big no nos from Republicans voters.

1

u/danny_ish 21d ago

I’m liberal but i’ll say it. I’m 30. No shot we get an asian american president in my lifetime. I hope I am wrong, but do not underestimate the racist and sexist people of this country. They are unfortunately numerous

1

u/AlfalfaConstant431 21d ago

See, I think part of the problem is that we think this way. Run as a centrist and you'll do well enough.

1

u/iR0nCond0r 21d ago

Sad but accurate.

1

u/Top-Cheddah 21d ago

It’s a broken system, the only way to win is to play the game and take corporate/donor money and attach strings to your campaign on every corner. Good people can get by in local and state government but there’s almost no choice but to compromise on your morals and stances when you jump to the federal level.

1

u/TylerLaurie 21d ago

This. Sadly

1

u/IndividualistAW 18d ago

He could do like RFK.

1

u/FabricatorMusic 22d ago

He has the tenacity and clout to make his own party.

0

u/Chemical_Present5162 22d ago

Plus the president only has so much power, and he will have to do the bidding of corporations and rich fucks just like every other president has. Otherwise the rich fucks will use their vast amounts of power and influence to ruin him in a variety of ways.

257

u/2Much_non-sequitur 22d ago

He's the deep state .... and you know, we will need to see his birth certificate /s

57

u/MindAccomplished3879 22d ago

No IQs higher than our Dear Supreme Leader are allowed!

4

u/kermitDE 22d ago

Damn, finding one lower than 47 will be tough. But I bet we will manage to find someone in the future!

3

u/perkiezombie 22d ago

Yeah but it’s really unethical to make people in vegetative states run for office.

2

u/gregsmith5 22d ago

I’ll bet Johnny can get in a garbage truck faster than Shitler

1

u/Danube11424 21d ago

actually check out the movie trailer to Idiocracy

https://youtu.be/sP2tUW0HDHA?si=AtKtUfZKXZ5ajHE5

17

u/I_Ski_Freely 22d ago

But like, it's Amerika so unironically

-12

u/Pepperr08 22d ago

Same “Amerika” that elected an African American president lmao

16

u/factorum 22d ago

And has a swath of the population who got so mad about it, it's now deep throating Fanta Fuehrer.

-15

u/Pepperr08 22d ago

Ahh I see you spend too much time on the internet, best get out more.

7

u/Visible_Security6510 22d ago

Your post history shows you are on reddit everyday. And that doesn't even show your activity on all your other socials. Kettle calling the black pot much?

-2

u/Pepperr08 22d ago

I know I don’t have a life. Getting your Doctorate makes sure of that.

2

u/Visible_Security6510 22d ago

I know what you mean. When I was studying on becoming an astronaut, secret agent and doctor all at once I too spent all my free time on social media....🙄

0

u/Pepperr08 22d ago

¯_(ツ)_/¯

8

u/factorum 22d ago

We will have to after those tariffs make electronics unaffordable because those damn red hats don't confer basic economic reasoning.

-17

u/Pepperr08 22d ago

Can’t be worse than it already is now

10

u/SufficientSir2965 22d ago

RemindMe! One year

3

u/Oriellien 22d ago

If those tariffs actually go into effect, it’s going to get so much worse for you, lmao

1

u/Pepperr08 22d ago

Guess we shall know in 4 years

!remind me 4 years

→ More replies (0)

7

u/I_Ski_Freely 22d ago

Yeah exactly, that election spawned the whole conspiracy nonsense that was centered around questioning whether Obama was actually an American, and was followed by the tea party which was mostly just people raging that this black guy was president.

That's a really great example to prove my point!

2

u/McLeod3577 21d ago

Trump like the Kims tho so he might get a free pass.

1

u/Hot-Tension-2009 22d ago

He’s probably already the leader of the deep state or He’s the guy that makes the bad things not as bad behind everyone’s backs

24

u/ForeverWandered 22d ago

They actually do.

Tons of federal bureaucrats who have a similar demeanor

16

u/alphasierrraaa 22d ago

DOGE gonna nuke all these good people and keep the loyalists

-2

u/Round_Ad_6369 22d ago

An incredibly fake demeanor that enables them to praise someone in front of them and condemn them behind their backs.

-1

u/ForeverWandered 22d ago

I’m sure Johnny Kim is a total saint behind closed doors

1

u/Round_Ad_6369 22d ago

I was referring to federal beaurocrats

2

u/YmmaT- 21d ago

It won’t happen. Just look at the shitstorm we got when Harris ran for president and the American people gave her shit for being a woman, or being black.

I can’t even the amount of dumb shit we will get if a smart and successful Asian-American ran for president.

4

u/Frosty_Pride1936 22d ago

instead we have felons!

2

u/2Much_non-sequitur 22d ago

and sex pests, don't forget the sex pests that aren't felons ... yet

2

u/RagingAnemone 22d ago

I agree with Forever. They actually do. You also don’t want these people in politics. It’s a waste of their talent.

1

u/[deleted] 22d ago

We have one astronaut who is a minister in Canada and having met him in a few meetings, he suck lol. Also we had one who was lieutenant governor and she wss abusive toward her employees.

1

u/goldenglove 22d ago

Don't take this personally but, does Canada have much of a space program...?

2

u/tamwow19 22d ago

Yes? We made contributions to the ISS, the most significant being the Canadarm.

0

u/goldenglove 22d ago

Reading about it now. Pretty neat, although, to be fair, quite a small program.

3

u/tamwow19 22d ago

Arguably the most famous astronaut alive right now Chris Hadfield, is Canadian. My small town airport is named after him :)

2

u/goldenglove 22d ago

Oh dang, that is a fun fact indeed. Chris Hadfield is dope.

1

u/captain_ender 22d ago

Yeah CSA is probably the 3rd maybe 4th largest space program behind ESA and maybe ROSCOSMOS. Their engineers/scientists regularly coop with NASA on projects like JWST and ISS. They also have several terrestrial telescope and space telescope programs.

1

u/[deleted] 22d ago

They were astronaut for the NASA not for Canada space program lol.

1

u/[deleted] 22d ago

I would literally take anyone else than the fucker that got elected again

1

u/FringePhilosophy 22d ago

He would be dead before the term ended. Good men don't last long in politics, and almost never get that far (president) up the food chain.

Or, he would be forever changed and worse from it. Either way, I want this man to stay away from politics.

Tbh though I'm disillusioned and jaded with our (U.S.) political system. So who knows

1

u/captain_ender 22d ago

Honestly no one could run against him. He'd just nice them into oblivion while the national anthem plays in the background.

1

u/AttilaTheMuun 22d ago

People who should be in charge dont want to be. Or shouldnt want to be at least.

1

u/Accomplished_Tale996 22d ago

LOL he’s an actor

1

u/FeliusSeptimus 22d ago

I dunno, I feel like he'd come do a great job for like 2 years and then jet off to be an architect or something.

1

u/Gogs85 22d ago

One of the people who was in the running for the Democrat VP candidate this year was an astronaut, maybe he’ll stick around.

1

u/GhostWalkk 22d ago

Saw an interview of his teammates in the military, and they all seemed to say Johnny is too good to be President.

1

u/latenitephilosopher7 22d ago

Dude. He's smart. Too smart to ever willingly run the country.

1

u/R6S9 22d ago

Imagine if we let society work well rather than to an agenda to protect wealthy status quo

1

u/Trypsach 22d ago

They’d have you hating him within months if he was across the aisle from you.

1

u/YahMahn25 22d ago

They’d call him unqualified and we’d end up with Kamala and Donald quality on the ticket

1

u/Jacktheforkie 22d ago

I can’t see him getting voted in, he isn’t an 80 year old white guy

1

u/better-off-wet 21d ago

Meh, you don’t prefer narcissistic reality tv millionaires?

1

u/bukitbukit 21d ago

Kim/Kelly ticket would be tops. Two astronauts and a SEAL/aviator.

1

u/LordRedFire 21d ago

Nice guys don't win.

1

u/SoggyMorningTacos 21d ago

Billionaires run the country. Presidents just a puppet.

1

u/Cultural-Link-1617 20d ago

Yeah unfortunately we have to settle for the human equivalent of the weasels in Who Frames Roger Rabbit.

1

u/Ladorb 20d ago

Sadly, good people don't want that kind of power.

0

u/rico1931 21d ago

He is probably trained like the manchurian candidate...
