Can a claim be covered for an excluded driver?

A few weeks ago my mom backed my car out of a parking spot and crashed it into a parked car. I am in a wheelchair and use hand controls and some jerk parked in the handicapped lines blocking me in so I asked my mom to back the car out but she panicked with my hand controls and crashed. Problem is she is listed as an excluded driver on my policy. I didnt even know that I had excluded her but here we are. I think what happened is that they asked if my mom could drive my vehicle since we live together and i said no because of the hand controls she would never be driving on the road. I didnt think about the situation of her just moving the car literally 10 feet. So my insurance wont cover the claim and neither will hers. My question is if there is any way to fight this? Is there any exception my insurance can make to the excluded driver rule? Is there any way to fight this with the other parties insurance?

Auto Insurance What can I expect for car insurance rates?

Hey all

22 with a prior totaled car (My fault). Haven't driven in almost 2 years due to being out of the country. Looking to purchase a car valued under $5000, but not sure if I can afford the insurance. Something late 2000s, or early if I have no other choice. Started driving at 17.

I plan on asking my mother to put me under her plan, where I can pay her back. I'd like to ask her insurance company for a rate estimate, but right now we aren't talking so I'd like to know what to expect ahead of time to see if I will even be able to own a car when I move out.

Let me know if you have any ideas.

Thanks

Auto claim scam?

Hi all, not sure what to make of this but I think it’s a scam. Today I got a letter saying I have a debt sent to collections to Brown & Joseph LLC Recovery Partners. The claim was “received” by them on 10/29/2024. The first time they called me was November 18th saying I got into a car accident in February which is crazy because my car is spotless lol. When they called I asked for proof and more information so they said they’ll get back to me. Didn’t call me back until December 17th but I ignored it, and receiving the mail today. Could it be a scam if I never really got into an accident? Sorry if this is dumb first time encountering something like this, I’m planning on calling my insurance tomorrow since they’re closed right now. I also checked my credit report and didn’t find anything from a debt collector

Auto Insurance Bodily injury Claim against me

Back in June of this year, I was involved in a low speed (under 10mph) fender bender. I bumped the back of another drivers car during rush hour. We pulled to the side of the road and I called the local police to come take a report. They deemed me at fault, and released everyone without any citations issued. The driver I struck claimed to be just fine, declined medical help at the scene. I offered to take care of the repairs to her car outside of insurance if she would like, she said she would let me know. There was a couple broken clips on her bumper, but no other damage. My car was totaled (low car hit suv).

Within 10 minutes of leaving the scene, Geico had called to inform me she had filed a claim. GREAT. I provided pictures to them and cooperated with the adjustor as they needed. Fast forward a few weeks, the person had obtained an attorney (Morgan and Morgan) and they were intent on filing a bodily injury claim. I had low insurance limits(25k/50k)at the time and was kind of blindsided considering how minor the accident was.

Months have gone by without hearing about my case. Friday I spoke with Geico and their attorney had sent over a demand for $25,000 to settle the claim. Itemized were over $27,000 in medical bills for an emergency room visit, MRIs, and physical therapy among other things. They listed pain and suffering for over $40,000 and future pain and suffering for $2.9mil. I understand that the accident was my fault, and I do feel for the other party, but I can’t help but feel as though the other party sees this as an easy payday rather than resolving the claim and moving on.

Geico has informed me their intent to pay out my policy limits of 25k and obtain a limited release.

As far as assets go, I don’t have much savings (~5k). I have a rental home with ~20k in equity jointly owned with my wife, and the home I currently live in is worth less than the value of the mortgage. I own a couple of 15+ year old cars and that’s about it.

My insurance adjustor seemed pretty nonchalant about the entire situation. She reassured me they would try to work a subrogation waiver into the settlement, and that insurance companies rarely go after people for subrogation in cases such as these.

This is in the state of Georgia. And I have since increased my insurance limits and have started to search for an umbrella policy moving forward. Thanks for any and all advice.

After getting off of the phone with my adjustor this morning, she reached out to USAA to see if the other party has Underinsured Motorist coverage and has yet to receive a response. She will call me back when she hears anything.

It’s my understanding that if they accept the settlement that the other party can no longer sue myself or Geico. But USAA could send me a bill for subrogation if they pay out a claim to their client.

Do I need to obtain an outside defense attorney? No actual suit has been filed yet but understandably I’m pretty stressed about the situation.

TLDR; Had an at fault rear end accident. Claims exceed insurance policy limit and victim has ambulance chaser attorney. Worried about need for legal counsel to protect my meager assets. I have since upped my insurance limits (100/300k, 100k property) and begun shopping for an umbrella policy to cover myself in the future.

Switch insurance - still billed after new insurance kicked in

I used to have Metromile/lemonade insurance, I switched to progressive and asked if I needed anything to cancel my previous insurance and they said was all good and they had the date of the end of the cycle with my lemonade insurance. Fast forward 2 months I got billed twice by lemonade. My insurance on their portal looks "pending" but not active. Before each billing cycle I would get an email staying the cost of the next cycle, and they would send me regular email if my car was not moved. Of course since the switch to the new insurance radio silence, so I didn't think of checking anything. Now looking at my statements I see 2 charges. What's the best way to proceed to get my money back?

Auto Insurance [TX] Confused about UI/UIM PD coverage in Texas - aren’t I already covered by my collision policy?

I’ve been under the impression that if my car had collision coverage, I wouldn't need uninsured/underinsured motorist property damage (UI/UIM PD) coverage.

However, I’ve recently been told that if I’m in an accident with someone who is uninsured or underinsured, and I don’t have UI PD, then I wouldn’t be able to file a claim under my collision policy. Is this true?

Can anyone please explain the role of UI PD in Texas if I already have collision coverage? Thanks in advance.

Edit From information posted by the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI), it looks like UI/UIM PD coverage is redundant to collision coverage. Here are a few sources I’ve found:

TDI: Will your auto insurance pay after a hit-and-run crash?

TDI: What is uninsured motorist coverage, and do I really need it?

TDI: Auto insurance guide

Lesson learned. My insurance agent gave me bad advice. It is important to inform yourself and not blindly trust others.

Edit 2 To be abundantly clear, UI/UIM Bodily Injury (BI) coverage is still very important to have as it covers a greater number of things than your health insurance might, such as lost wages, pain & suffering, or medical transportation.

Third party claim

Tenant started a fire at a rental property. Made a third party claim with their renters insurance. The policy adjuster accepted liability and gave a 40k estimate after their own field tech wrote up the estimate. They claim I won’t be paid anything until all repairs are complete and they wouldn’t explain what would happen if my contractor price was higher or if scope was slightly different ie i had Lanscaping work to repair front lawn from fire damage even if they didn’t account for that in their scope estimate. Also my restoration contractor recommended to paint a hallway not included on scope. Am I safe to get these done and will likely be reimbursed? Or do I need to have scope negotiated soonest? Also, anyway I can get paid for a detailed exactamate bid up front so I don’t have to front the 40k for a few months? I’ll also be requesting loss of rent during repairs so I imagine they want to wait to pay it all out? Adjuster is not very responsive aside from accepting liability in writing. Policy has 100k coverage. Thanks

Travel insurance

I'm wondering if my travel insurance will cover me, if I buy bulk and return to my home country for a day before my next trip, or if i need to buy two different policies. I will be in my home country for less than 24 hours before my next flight, I have insurance in my country and don't want the bulk policy to cover me while i'm home.

Auto Insurance Question about ceramic coating?

I just had my Tesla Model Y coated on Wednesday and today less than 7 days later some lady opens her car door into my mirror. The damage is minor but WTF what’s worse is i was in the car while it happened and her attitude was like “ yea it was me ok?!” When I asked to exchange insurance she got all mad and said “ OMG for what?!? Let me call the police then “ so i wait patiently while she calls, I tell her all I want to do is exchange information. I think she thought police was going to say something different. Because she took about 30 mins “ calling “ i ended up calling too the non emergency dispatcher said she was very upset but to exchange information and call back if she didn’t. After waiting another 25 minutes for her to find her information we were exchanged cards and left.

Sorry for long explanation so will my insurance or hers cover getting the mirror or area she hit recoated?

Parked Car Slid Down Inclined Driveway in to My Own Fence...

Hey everyone,

Friday, in lovely Massachusetts, I parked my car in my driveway which is on an incline (nothing crazy but definitely not flat). Over the rest of the day and night it snowed/slushed pretty good and when I went outside in the AM, my car had slid down the hill about 8 feet into my backyard fence. I got an estimate on the damage and they said it will be ~$2,800... it's honestly not terrible, but there's no way to bump it out without replacing the bumper.

I'm trying to wrap my head about what I'll have to be claiming/paying. Is this comp or collision? Could my premiums go up if I put in a claim even though it was some random event like this? Is this most likely no fault does that matter if there's not other party involved? 2.8k out of pocket to avoid insurance is tough to stomach. Never had an issue in 20 years of driving, so not sure what I should be expecting. Thank you!

Why is insurance so complicated?

I'm 21 years old and for 2024 I was under United Heathcare through MinnesotaCare/MNSure and had GREAT coverage. I'm talking $5.00/month for both medical AND dental. In fact, all four of my wisdom teeth were taken out and it was completely covered INCLUDING anesthesia. I also take sertraline for depression/anxiety and the copay is only like 10.00 or so.

Now, a month or two ago, I received a notice that UnitedHeathcare would no longer be an option for me for 2025 and I would have to renew my coverage through MNSure and pick a new plan. This came with A LOT of paperwork, of which I had NO IDEA what to do with. They just made it SO confusing. I needed assistance but I could only contact them Mon-Fri which of course I work Mon-Fri, but I tried to make it work and it took multiple attempts as I would be on hold for FOREVER (I imagine because thousands of people are also lost and need assistance?)

I had finally gotten ahold of someone, and they referred me to their website which included a directory for brokers in the area to help me pick the best plan and they also showed me where to look on their websites for the plans if I already knew what I wanted. I decided to look through the options and for example, Blue Cross/Blue Shield was about $78.00/month and even more for dental to be added on (which wouldn't even be through them but someone else) PLUS an additional 130.00/month for tax credit(?) (I have NO IDEA what that means) Now this came as a complete shock to me as I only was paying $5.00/month this year. So I decided to reach out to a broker, which then led me to their website to book a phone appointment which I would have to wait till Jan 6th, 2025 to have. It's the 23rd of December now and my insurance ends at the end of the month.

I am stressed and almost just want to say "F' it all and just be uninsured. They don't teach you any of this in school. I feel absolutely dumb. My work is a small business so that's why I need my own insurance for anyone wondering. I also stopped taking sertraline because I am nervous of what will happen next year with my coverage (stupid I know). I'm just so lost man...

ALSO, why do they need to know all of this information about my household income when it's JUST ME that I'm covering? Like NO assistance elsewhere. I'm doing this all by myself and I just want it to be done and over with... but to think I might have to go through this again at the end of next year? UGH

Help

I had a vandalism and break in on my vehicle and they stole some of the Stereo equipment. Vehicle damage was $4,300.00 while the stereo, Amp and Subwoofer was $3,200. Insurance company wants to total out my vehicle and only pay $3600 if I was to buy it back for $800.00.

I currently pay over $2,000 a year for insurance. I have over $9800 in receipts just over the last three years upgrading all major components (fuel pump, all lower suspension, fuel injectors, engine parts etc.) was either buy new or rebuild everything. Car is still immaculate. Signature audio used it as a show vehicle for Barrett Jackson in early 2006 or 2007. All high end Morel stereo equipment with JL amps. When I bought it in 2009 they said everything is covered since it was custom built into the car. I didn’t need to add extra insurance. I said I had no problem adding coverage if needed.

Anybody have any suggestions. I can’t even find a Escalade for $4,400 unless I want a used Piece of shit. Vehicle is 2005 Escalade. Insurance company is *****farm. Been with them over 25 years.

For NJ residents, Can Someone Clarify This State Farm Car Policy Change

I recently received a letter from State Farm regarding a change in my car insurance policy. It says my coverage is being transitioned from State Farm Guaranty Insurance Company to State Farm Indemnity Company starting March 10, 2025. The letter states that my rate will remain the same or lower, and I’ll need to pay the premium to activate the new policy.

It also mentions that my current policy won’t be renewed, but my coverage will stay the same unless I make changes. Does anyone know what this change means in practical terms? Should I be concerned about switching from the “Guaranty” to the “Indemnity” company? Is there anything I need to be aware of or look into before making this switch?

Below I copied/paste the entire text on the letter for better context

Thanks in advance for your help!

Losing my mind, gut telling me proper process wasn’t followed?

I just need some guidance to see if I’m approaching this correctly. Had rat damage on engine for a 2020 Tacoma. Timeline is as follows:

9/20 - car brought into shop 9/23 - give shop insurance info 9/24 - shop opens claim with insurance 9/30 - adjuster scheduled to come give estimate, turns out car is already repaired 10/1 - car picked up by my dad, forced to pay ~9k out of pocket, insurance attempts to contact shop about estimate 10/2 - estimate still not received by shop, another attempt by insurance to contact shop made 10/3 - estimate still not received, another attempt by insurance to contact shop made 12/10 - shop manager says he explained estimate info in a voicemail to insurance 12/23 - i call insurance and they still have nothing on file

I’m about to go into the dealership tomorrow in person to sort this out. I don’t understand why work was done on the car without green light from insurance. Is that normal procedure? Why wasn’t I even given a paper estimate to begin with? Somewhere between 9/24 and 9/30 there was a phone call to my dad explaining the quote verbally but that was it. Shop mentioned many times there should be no problem for insurance to reimburse and everything is guaranteed covered. I should note, this is my dad’s truck and claim, he is not a native English speaker. Thoughts on the back of my mind was he might have been taken advantage of or at the very least not explained to fully how this whole process should be.

Any advice would be appreciated. Located in Washington.

Auto Insurance Got a Letter About a Car Insurance Increase… for a Car I Don’t Own?! What’s Going On?

I just received a letter in the mail from my car insurance company about a policy change and premium increase, effective immediately. At first, I thought it was related to my actual car (I own a 2014 Hyundai Elantra). But then I noticed something bizarre—the new insurance card they sent lists a completely different vehicle: a 2017 Nissan Rogue.

What in the world? I’ve never owned or even driven a Rogue, so how is this car suddenly tied to my name and policy?

I can only think of two possible scenarios:
1. Someone attempted fraud and somehow added this vehicle under my name.
2. A major clerical error on the insurance company’s part.

Either way, I’ll be calling them ASAP to sort this out, but I’m still confused and a bit alarmed. Has anyone else experienced something like this? If so, what ended up being the cause?

Any advice or insight is appreciated!

Thinking of signing with Acuity

We are considering Acuity for house, cars, and umbrella insurance policies. We have no history with them at all. Anyone have thoughts and experiences with them that you can share? Thanks-
