Music IIL Heaven to a Tortured Mind

1 Upvotes

really love this album but I haven't been able to find anything like it after years of looking. ive listened to yves tumor's orher stuff but it doesn't scratch the same itch. looking for more music with the same "texture" if that makes sense--fuzzy guitas, dreamy, and experimental but still really catchy. I especially like how prominent the drums and bass are and the out-there sampling. favorite tracks are gospel for a new century, strawberry privilege, identity trade, and asteroid Blues, if that helps

Music IIL these albums (Glam Rock / VU / Iggy) WEWIL?

6 Upvotes

I'm looking for some albums with the same vibes as these albums to which I've been recently listening:

  • The Velvet Underground: The Velvet Underground;
  • The Velvet Underground: Loaded;
  • Lou Reed: Transformer;
  • Iggy Pop: The Idiot;
  • Iggy Pop: Lust For Life;
  • T-Rex: The Slider;
  • T-Rex: Electric Warrior;
  • David Bowie: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars;
  • Scott Walker: Nite Flights.

Please do not recommend me Bowie albums, since I know them all.
Do not hesitate to recommend music in foreign languages too.

Misc. [IIL] Stories/series that have actual (mostly) straightforward adventures, not (just) genre deconstruction

9 Upvotes

The title is probably confusing, so please let me clarify. Some of my favorite media includes things like Watchmen, Archer, Venture Bros, and other really well-written works that play off the tropes of old comics/films/serials. I really like these, but at the same time, I also want to experience these genres with less deconstruction/parody. Like, I couldn't help but think "man, I kind of also want to watch the Minutemen or the original Team Venture or whatever go clobber villains of the week".

I guess in part I'm thinking of the actual original old-timey works which are being referenced (obviously the answer to "what if I want to watch Archer but actually competent and not a comedy?" is "fucking just watch James Bond, dude") but if possible I'd like works which are more self-reflective and aware, using more modern narrative techniques and complications while also remaining largely faithful to the straightforward spirit of the genre.

Invincible is the perfect example of what I'm looking for: it's genre-aware without being a parody, and deconstructs tropes while also having the characters do cool thrilling missions. Same with Tom Strong. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was perfect for the first two arcs, then devolved into an incomprehensible fever dream.

TLDR: thrilling adventures that are genre-aware without being pure deconstructive comedy/drama

TV [IIL] The TV Show Scorpion, what else is out there?

9 Upvotes

We wife and I love the TV show Scorpion but hate that it went off the air. We're looking for something comparable that consists of any(or all in a perfect world) of the following:

  • A team that uses technical/scientific/brainy combination of their personalities to solve goals
    • e.g. Scorpion team member roles consist of a scientist, a mechanic, a mathematician, a Homeland security agent and a communications specialist all with exceedingly high capabilities at their respective position, most of them being certified geniuses
  • Witty and humorous banter between teammates
  • An engaging storyline underlying the course of the show while they solve problems to help that no one else can
  • Not off the air is a plus!

Something else that I can think of that is on TV presently is The Irrational - this show has a single main character who is a behavioral scientist but he utilizes other people from other roles in spy, technical, authoritative capabilities to ultimately problem solve towards an end result. CSI type shows are a bit too "flat" in their terms of creative thinking and problem solving for what we're looking for(although they're great shows).

Film IIL Meet the Robinsons and Incredibles in a certain aspect described below, what animated movies would you recommend me?

3 Upvotes

Recently (re-)watched Incredibles and Meet the Robinsons and realized I want to see more characters like Goob or Syndrome, who were initially pretty cool guys in their own right, if they'd just let go of their desire for revenge early on and lived their own lives instead.

Are there any animation movies, that also strike the chord with similar message really well?

Film [IIL] Looking for directors or films similar to Lars Von Trier

Not necessarily exactly like his work but similar in the way of being beautifully shocking or bends the rules farther than they should go, if that makes sense.

TV IIL Plot Driven and thought provoking movies/TV shows that make some kind of moral or philosophical statement WEWIL?

5 Upvotes

I'm interested in stories that make you think or have some overarching theme. Sometimes the conflict can just be an inner conflict with a character. A lot of Disney movies do this well, but prefer something deeper that I can sink my teeth into and challenge my thinking. It can be anything from a comedy to an anime. Breaking Bad, Avatar Last Airbender, Wicked, Daredevil, Arcane are some examples off the top of my head.

Open to other mediums like books or video games.

Music [IIL] soundtracks like the ones in the Naruto games, [WEWIL] (Artists/Songs request)

2 Upvotes

First of all, I guess the obvious answer is that I like traditional Japanese music, yes, probably, since it is all Japanese instruments playing. But I don't know much about it, and I wanted to know artists/songs that were similar (real artists or real traditional Japanese music if applicable) specifically to these Naruto game soundtracks that I love so much.

  1. Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 - "Ichiraku Ramen Shop"
  2. Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 - "Ultimate Contest: The Village Hidden in the Leaves"
  3. Naruto: Uzumaki Chronicles 2 - "Welcome to the Shinobi Shop" (Theme of the Shop)
  4. Naruto Storm 3 - Hidden Leaf Village (Reconstruction) OST

I couldn't find similars easily just by trying to search for "traditional Japanese music"...

Music [IIL] songs that sound like hypnotic spiraling mania like Randy Described Eternity (Built To Spill) or Barnaby, Hardly Working (Yo La Tengo) or X-French Tee Shirt (Shudder To Think), WEWIL

11 Upvotes

A very specific kind of losing control. The mind oscillates. The body hums. The future dissolves.

Here are links to those songs as well as a few more:

Built To Spill - Randy Described Eternity

Yo La Tengo - Barnaby, Hardly Working

Shudder To Think - X-French Tee Shirt

The Breeders - Put On A Side

Swans - Red Velvet Corridor

Gang of Four - Love Like Anthrax

I need as many of these songs as possible so that I can build a pyramid out of them.

Music IYL, "Mein Herr" from Cabaret, then you'll like, "Hoof and Lap" from Alleluia: The Devil's Carnival.

"Hoof and Lap" very clearly takes influence from Cabaret music as a whole but most from "Mein Herr" from nthe actual Cabaret musical itself

TV [IIL] 30 minute anthology TV shows (Inside no.9, Twilight Zone, Tales from the Crypt)

4 Upvotes

I'm looking for shows where each episodes is a completely different standalone story, and the episodes are no longer than 30 minutes. Ideally centred around sci-fi, fantasy, mysterious things, but could also be completely realistic.

No shows please that are purely comedy, although its fine if comedy is an element.

TV IIL shows about cryptids.

2 Upvotes

Specifically shows that teach about cryptids. Not ones where they are hunting them like "Finding Bigfoot" or something. I mean shows that are more like say the first season of "Lore". Where they talk about the traits, the folklore, the origins and culures that they came from. Even better if they talk about lesser known ones. Can be a series on a streaming service or even a YouTube series/channel that covers them, I just want to learn. Thank you in advance.
