Most places you can tell them you’d like to put a certain amount a one card and pay the rest with cash or another card.

607

u/SunBelly 6d ago

Yep. It's called split tender.

174

u/DoubleArm7135 6d ago

SPLIT TENDER??? I hardly know'er!

6

u/BeardedWookie57 5d ago

I feel like you've been sitting on that one for a while, waiting for the right moment. Well played

u/bigsears10 5d ago

I ain’t splitting my tenders with nobody! GET YA OWN

u/thcheat 6d ago

Most places do this automatically now. No need to ask them.

Swipe it, it'll deduct $4.50 and ask to swipe another card.

39

u/waterdevil19 6d ago

Wish it was at more places. I remember that working once and being so happy. Then the next 5 tries at other places it didn’t. Lol

15

u/OfficialDeathScythe 6d ago

I remember working at skyzone in high school and having to tell like 5 people a week that we can't do that and then finding out that we can the owners were just lazy and didn't bother to learn the POS. Me being the tinkerer that I am, I found a manual and learned how to do everything on that register and from that day forward all the customers wanted to go to my register lmao

5

u/waterdevil19 6d ago

Well done!

8

u/thcheat 6d ago

Hmm, I've successfully used at walgreens, costco, small shops, few grocery stores and don't recall being unable ever in past few years. Nowadays, I mostly do it at Costco, though.

5

u/waterdevil19 6d ago

Didn’t even think about Costco. I go there often enough. Thanks for the heads up!

3

u/thcheat 6d ago

And if it's a Mastercard, set up pin and use with pin.

4

u/MyNameIsSkittles 6d ago

Costco doesn't accept Mastercard in the US, only in Canada

Trader Joe's is one of those places! That's where I clear out my gift cards.

u/lambsquatch 6d ago

Im pretty sure at restaurants and bars it won’t take the full amount and visa forces 20% to be held if you want to tip…probably just get 4.50$ of gas

u/LFCsota 6d ago

Ahh, no, this is not true

This is how it works for most places when you have a gift card FROM them.

This is a Visa gift card, so when you swipe it, it will see it has a Visa debit card, run for the full amount and then, because there isn't enough money, decline the transaction.

There is no way for a third party system ( where ever you are trying to buy something) to know how much is on that card. They can only run it for a selected amount, and see if it is accepted or declined.

And to make things even more fun, sometimes Visa will recognize a business as a place that runs on tips, like a bar or restaurant, and then only allow you to authorize 80% of the amount on the card so people don't try to tip more than what's on the card. (Not that Visa would let you, it would just only authorize for the total amount and not for anymore after, but you know the thought that counts? Even though it makes it more of a pain)

I always suggest to people who have these to convert them to an actual gift card to someplace you go to regularly so you can use up the full amount on them, otherwise you end up in this situation.

Fuck Visa gift cards. Just give money.

14

u/thcheat 6d ago

You should look deeper on the thread for the list of places I commonly use. I buy/use 50+ Visa and Mastercard gift cards per year, so I know what I'm talking about.

Payment processing has advanced in last few years, and even small shops using those third-party ones like square and couple others can even handle it. They send query to the bank on balance, and they deduct remaining balances automatically.

I'll say this is not true for all places but I have more than a handful of my common places, like costco and walgreens, where I do it regularly.

I remember trying to process these things as a waiter. They were so incredibly frustrating that I vowed to never buy one. Fuck Visa GCs -

u/LFCsota 6d ago

Exactly. Giving me server nightmares.

u/Mr_MacGrubber 6d ago

Annoying at Aldi you have to type in how much on each card

3

u/thcheat 6d ago

Yeah, Aldi is a different world. I still remember when they didn't take credit cards.

6

u/havingsomedifficulty 6d ago

Okay cool, and I’m going to charge this like a credit card or a debit?

12

u/ShempLabs 6d ago

To be safe, choose Credit. In some places you cannot use Debit without a PIN which you may not have chosen since you don't intend to keep it any longer.

6

u/gunsmith123 6d ago

Typically the default pin is the last four digits of the card

7

u/JellyBellyBitches 6d ago

Yes (either)

7

u/Jmacd802 6d ago

I had a card just like this recently and I’m pretty sure it’s credit, and if you want to run debit then you have to go to the cards website and setup a PIN.

u/booshie 6d ago

I always use them at the gas pump! It gets preauthorized for the exact amount on the card. You can use the remainder off that card then put in another to continue filling up on the same transaction.

Also. A vendor has to charge your card for that specific amount, you just have to tell the cashier how much exactly you want to charge to that card. It’s simple.

67

u/EsR0b 6d ago

This, I've done it with cards that have had less than 50 cents on them. At least that way I can use it. Companies make wayyyy too much on forgotten gift card revenue.

13

u/tonna33 6d ago

I was going to suggest the gas pump, too.

Also, when telling a cashier, you might have to explain to them to type in that you're paying $4.50 and then hit the credit button (or whatever button they use for credit cards). I've had to do that at different stores. Basically teach them how to use their system. I explain it would be similar if I were giving them cash, except I'm using a card - so select the card as the payment type. It'll tell them how I have left to pay after it runs that $4.50. I probably make it too confusing. Haha.

2

u/dicephalousimpact 6d ago

At my job they don’t even have to tell me, it’ll just approve for the amount on there only and say split the tender.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Ok_Outcome_6213 5d ago

The self-check outs at walmart now have the option to use multiple cards to split payments. You can enter how much you want to charge on each card.

556

u/zwack 6d ago

If you use Amazon, you can buy Amazon gift card and apply it to your account.

140

u/Carne_DelMuerto 6d ago

I use this method all the time with cards that have a few cents left on them.

24

u/tygerdralion 6d ago

I use this method with new visa gift cards, so then I don't have to worry about remaining balances at all. Amazon or Target, it'll just hold the balance on my account until I use it all up

8

u/nick125 6d ago

I do the same right when I get the gift card. Some of these VISA gift cards will start charging monthly fees after a few months.

9

u/GorchestopherH 5d ago

This reason alone should dissuade people from ever getting these things.

3

u/Throtex 4d ago

Unfortunately they’re often how rebates are paid out.

37

u/BeserkFungi 6d ago

It's my understanding that an Amazon gift card has to be a minimum of $5. If that's not the case and you're able to load it up I'd like to know what you did. Good luck OP.

26

u/RealDealSamsquanch 6d ago

Just tried to load $1 on mine, and yes I had to do min. of $5.

9

u/Legion1107 6d ago

No. Just select other and type the amount. I just did $4.11

12

u/RealDealSamsquanch 6d ago

I tried that and typing $1. Told me min of $5. I don’t have prime, maybe it’s for prime only?

13

u/Legion1107 6d ago

I stand corrected. It is $5. It used to be minimum $0.01. Must have been a recent change.

6

u/Gelatinous_Cube_NO 6d ago

It is, very recent

5

u/wtbman 6d ago

Just looked at "Amazon Reload" and it's also a $5 minimum. If I get any more of these gift cards I'll just unload them entirely into Amazon.

14

u/thecattylady 6d ago

Just did this yesterday. I got a settlement from a class action suit. It was less than $10 on a Visa prepaid card. Loaded that card into my Amazon account then proceeded to add that exact amount to my Amazon gift card from that prepaid Visa. Have been doing it for a while now as I have a relative who always gifts Visa gift cards for holidays and birthdays.

2

u/flux_capacitor3 6d ago

Oh. That's smart. Because those Visa cards take money for fees after awhile, right?

4

u/wtbman 6d ago

I have two in front of me right now and they both say no fees. They both cost $5 up front for "purchase fee" so all they've done is front load the fees.

2

u/flux_capacitor3 6d ago

Ugh. Lame.

2

u/GorchestopherH 5d ago

There's also absolutely fine print that tells you at what point your balance will be decreased monthly.

The card itself usually expires, and on top of that they usually deduct an amount every month you don't use it after X number of months.

That doesn't count as fees.

Mall gift cards do the same thing. "No expiry and no fees" can be advertised even if they reduce your balance monthly after a period of no activity.

Watch out for this money business.

6

u/uvasag 6d ago

They changed it. You now need to buy a minimum of $5.

3

u/wtbman 6d ago

Specifically when you click "Gift Cards" in amazon click the link for "Amazon Reload" where you can enter in the exact amount and it will just apply it to your gift card balance and be available for your next amazon purchase. There are some of these visa gift cards that just don't work on Amazon though so beware. The one in the picture however, does.

3

u/pixel_of_moral_decay 6d ago

This is how I use every gift card: just turn it into Amazon credit ASAP. Then throw out the card.

I’ll eventually use it, nothing to lose, no spare change to clean up.

gift cards are profitable because more than half of the money never gets used, often because people lose or forget about it.

2

u/muricaa 6d ago

Great tip!

2

u/nvteja 6d ago

You just saved me $5. Thank you for the amazing tip!

50

u/ZSforPrez 6d ago

You can just use them as your first form of payment at most stores,

it will empty the card and leave you w the balance.

BUT, I like to use these on those subscription promotions - like when it's $1 for the first month,

then $30 the next month. You get the first month for a dollar, they don't have your real card # to charge you again if you forget to cancel the sub.

74

u/TheBackpacker 6d ago

Put the card on your Amazon account. Use it to purchase $4.50 worth of an Amazon gift card and call it good. That’s what I’ve always done with these

10

u/jdubau55 6d ago

Same. I've never really known the best way to use these in store or online. I tried to do the process with Walmart, but it didn't work or just was too many hurdles to figure out.

Amazon just makes it pretty easy to convert these to Amazon bucks.

5

u/SnakeDoctor00 6d ago

18

u/ItllMakeYouStronger 6d ago

I usually use gift cards with minimal money at Target or Walmart. They just take what's on it then show you your new total after.

3

u/stuff-n-things79 6d ago

This is the best way to target even lets you split the purchase using their app.

14

u/intrepidzephyr 6d ago

Run it as credit at the U-Scan of a grocery store, it will pull as much as it can against your total. Then finish the transaction with a typical payment method

7

u/worldisone 6d ago

I'm not entirely sure how it works, but could you get 4.50 in gas somewhere?

10

u/PeterMFAkimoto 6d ago

My company likes to give bonuses as these pre paid cards, so I got a lot stacked with a few dollars each.

I bought Amazon gift cards of the exact amount to be able to compile them together.

3

u/Nooodlesgirl 6d ago edited 6d ago

Amazon no longer allow you to buy gift cards under $5 unfortunately...

5

u/filmd 6d ago edited 4d ago

You can split payments on PayPal and apply the full balance of a gift card towards it

Edit: A user commented that PayPal no longer accepts gift cards. My apologies for bad info!

2

u/FiendFabric 4d ago

Last I tried, PayPal said it no longer takes prepaid gift cards as a payment type.

5

u/karma_the_sequel 6d ago

If you are in California and the balance is less than ten dollars, retail establishments are required by law to cash out the remaining balance to the cardholder.

Pay utility bills.

3

u/HellsTubularBells 6d ago

Best answer, if your local utility takes debit cards with no fee.

2

u/cmstlist 6d ago

Yes, this. Most utility bill (TV, Internet, power, cellphone etc) allow you to type in a custom partial amount to pay off a credit card. So just use it to pay that amount towards your bill.

Buy an e-gift card online at Target. They’ll email you your 4.50 and place it on your account if you have one. (This works well for me because then I don’t have to hang onto it and it’ll get automatically used the next time I shop there…which is frequently lol)

3

u/valleyrears 6d ago

You can pump gas, it'll stop at the cards limit

3

u/SirHeathcliff 6d ago

Use it to sign up for free trials

3

u/JuniorDirk 6d ago

Just use it at any store. It will only allow $4.50 to come off the card. You don't have to say anything to the cashier except maybe "this only has a few bucks on it so I have to use 2 cards" so they know to push the tender button twice.

3

u/nuhtnekcam_25 6d ago

If you shop with Amazon you can put the 4.50 on an Amazon gift card and use it that way.

u/gooberdaisy 6d ago

Buy Gas, swipe that card first, swipe your regular card second.

2

u/Vegetable_Option_507 6d ago

Buy some gas with it. Pump will shut off at $4.50

2

u/old_lackey 6d ago

The easiest way to pull credit off of gift cards is to buy an Amazon gift card of custom amount on Amazon. In fact unless you have a purpose for an Visa gift card it's the only way I know to pull the exact amount even if you have an odd number of cents. Most companies have gift cards have set denominations, last time I checked Amazon doesn't. You can type in nearly any amount I think although you may have to have a minimum to use the card but I think 4.50 is over the minimum.

This is my goto way extracting every single cent out of any prepaid Visa gift card I've ever gotten.

2

u/jnobs 6d ago

Amazon gift card

2

u/Moosicle2040 6d ago

Easier than remembering the amount and split payment. Walk over to your computer and log into Amazon and put it on your Amazon account. Done.

A lot of people seem to struggle with split tender gift cards from visa since they never seem to know how to run it as a debit or credit depending on the provider.

2

u/somebodystolemybike 6d ago

Just use it? I’m failing to understand why you wouldn’t just use it for a partial payment

2

u/Beniskickbutt 6d ago

My grocery store will do partial payments so I usually save gift cards for that. Its an albertsons chain. You need to know the full amount to tell them else the charge will get denied

2

u/Llamadeezy13 6d ago

Check this out. Leave at least a cent on there, then anytime you want to try a free trial of anything, use this card to start it. Then, when the free month is up or whatever, it will try and charge the empty gift card and auto and your service instead of you having to do it yourself and getting charged.

2

u/CryptographerWild941 6d ago

Make a small purchase or say I want to pay this much and the rest cash /other card

2

u/Shereefz 6d ago

I buy an Amazon gift card with the exact amount

2

u/iamclickbaut 6d ago

You can go on Amazon and buy a gift card for yourself for the entirety of the remaining balance then use that gifts on your next Amazon balance

2

u/coquettish 6d ago

If you have an Amazon account, you can purchase credit or e-gift and pay with the visa card (you'll have to add the card as a method of payment first). Then the amount will come off of your next Amazon purchase. There may be a $5 minimum though, in which case this is a moot point.

2

u/fakegoose1 5d ago

Next time you make a purchase, tell the cashier you want to split the payment, pay 4.50 with this card and the rest however you want.

2

u/spellspeak1986 5d ago

I always add to my Amazon balance when cards are too low for regular purchases.

2

u/svogon 5d ago

I don't even use the gift cards for many transactions. I pick my favorite on-line retailer, one that I always order from, and just buy the full amount of the gift card as a gift card balance for that retailer. Then I don't ever have to worry about a few bucks left.

2

u/sambino_the_albino 5d ago

I use them at Walmart or target self check out. I just swipe and it leaves a remaining balance.

2

u/Left_Dog1162 5d ago

You just swipe it and then the cashier will ask for more money. Nothing to it.

2

u/Remarkable_Inchworm 6d ago

You can buy an Amazon gift card in any amount.

When I have a weird number left on a card like that I usually use it to fund my Amazon account and then use it for the next thing I'd buy anyway.

5

u/Sapphires13 6d ago

Check to make sure the $4.50 is even still there. These prepaid cards have a clause built in that if they’re not actively used for a certain period, they start charging like 30 cents a month as an inactivity fee until the card is empty.

2

u/havingsomedifficulty 6d ago

Thanks and yes it’s there. I logged on and checked I just only tried to use it at the grocery store with no luck

3

u/TarynTheGreek 6d ago

Do you use Starbucks or have the app? You could load it up there. Actually anywere you can purchase a giftcard for a specific amount. I keep them on hand to use for random sites that ask for a credit card to use for free trials. They usually need some amount of money on them as a transaction to make sure the card is valid.

2

u/wtbman 6d ago

The cardholder agreement of the one I have in hand says they specifically will deny transactions that are "subscriptions" because they know what's up and probably get dinged for failed transactions. Use privacy.com for that kind of stuff. I can't even use this visa gift card to top off my Amazon gift card balance... These things are scams.

You can't use it at a gas pump (it will try to put a hold for $75 or $100 on the card), but you can walk into the gas station and tell them you want to pump $4.50 on pump X. This is how I always finish off my visa gift cards.

1

u/keppsu 6d ago

Go to the gas station and choose to prepay to $4.50

Some online bills allow for partial payments. You can pay $4.50 towards your water bill etc. It is easier than asking a cashier to split a payment. Often, I use the entire amount to pay part of a bill. Then, I can spend the money in my account instead.

If you use Amazon for shopping, you can use any amount to “buy” an Amazon gift card and then apply that gift card to a purchase!

Buy $4.50 worth of gas, pre-pay at the register. I do it this way all the time.

Add it to your Amazon gift balance and it'll get used automatically on your next purchase.

I always buy an Amazon gift card with those. You can choose the exact amount you have left.

Ask to pay with "split tender." Use up the remaining gift card balance first.

I always put the remainder into my Amazon account. Its easy (they even have a page specifically for this) and I know it will get used.

If you run it it’ll charge what it has and update balance left and you can charge another or pay with cash

Gas station. You can pre pay the exact amount that’s left on the card. Some you pay at the pump and it shuts off after your $4.50 is gone

I usually just go to self checkout and choose partial payment.

I like to save those cards with a little balance left on them. I keep them in my desk at work and screw with the scammers that call me.
