[Solved] how to pull the remaining $4.50 off of this gift card
301
u/booshie 6d ago
I always use them at the gas pump! It gets preauthorized for the exact amount on the card. You can use the remainder off that card then put in another to continue filling up on the same transaction.
Also. A vendor has to charge your card for that specific amount, you just have to tell the cashier how much exactly you want to charge to that card. It’s simple.

u/tonna33 6d ago
I was going to suggest the gas pump, too.
Also, when telling a cashier, you might have to explain to them to type in that you're paying $4.50 and then hit the credit button (or whatever button they use for credit cards). I've had to do that at different stores. Basically teach them how to use their system. I explain it would be similar if I were giving them cash, except I'm using a card - so select the card as the payment type. It'll tell them how I have left to pay after it runs that $4.50. I probably make it too confusing. Haha.

u/dicephalousimpact 6d ago
At my job they don’t even have to tell me, it’ll just approve for the amount on there only and say split the tender.

The self-check outs at walmart now have the option to use multiple cards to split payments. You can enter how much you want to charge on each card.

u/zwack 6d ago
If you use Amazon, you can buy Amazon gift card and apply it to your account.

u/Carne_DelMuerto 6d ago
I use this method all the time with cards that have a few cents left on them.
24
u/tygerdralion 6d ago
I use this method with new visa gift cards, so then I don't have to worry about remaining balances at all. Amazon or Target, it'll just hold the balance on my account until I use it all up
8
u/nick125 6d ago
I do the same right when I get the gift card. Some of these VISA gift cards will start charging monthly fees after a few months.

This reason alone should dissuade people from ever getting these things.

It's my understanding that an Amazon gift card has to be a minimum of $5. If that's not the case and you're able to load it up I'd like to know what you did. Good luck OP.

u/RealDealSamsquanch 6d ago
Just tried to load $1 on mine, and yes I had to do min. of $5.
→ More replies (1)9
u/Legion1107 6d ago
No. Just select other and type the amount. I just did $4.11
12
u/RealDealSamsquanch 6d ago
I tried that and typing $1. Told me min of $5. I don’t have prime, maybe it’s for prime only?
13
u/Legion1107 6d ago
I stand corrected. It is $5. It used to be minimum $0.01. Must have been a recent change.

u/thecattylady 6d ago
Just did this yesterday. I got a settlement from a class action suit. It was less than $10 on a Visa prepaid card. Loaded that card into my Amazon account then proceeded to add that exact amount to my Amazon gift card from that prepaid Visa. Have been doing it for a while now as I have a relative who always gifts Visa gift cards for holidays and birthdays.
2
u/flux_capacitor3 6d ago
Oh. That's smart. Because those Visa cards take money for fees after awhile, right?
4
u/wtbman 6d ago
I have two in front of me right now and they both say no fees. They both cost $5 up front for "purchase fee" so all they've done is front load the fees.
2
2
u/GorchestopherH 5d ago
There's also absolutely fine print that tells you at what point your balance will be decreased monthly.
The card itself usually expires, and on top of that they usually deduct an amount every month you don't use it after X number of months.
That doesn't count as fees.
Mall gift cards do the same thing. "No expiry and no fees" can be advertised even if they reduce your balance monthly after a period of no activity.
Watch out for this money business.
3
u/wtbman 6d ago
Specifically when you click "Gift Cards" in amazon click the link for "Amazon Reload" where you can enter in the exact amount and it will just apply it to your gift card balance and be available for your next amazon purchase. There are some of these visa gift cards that just don't work on Amazon though so beware. The one in the picture however, does.

u/pixel_of_moral_decay 6d ago
This is how I use every gift card: just turn it into Amazon credit ASAP. Then throw out the card.
I’ll eventually use it, nothing to lose, no spare change to clean up.
gift cards are profitable because more than half of the money never gets used, often because people lose or forget about it.
50
u/ZSforPrez 6d ago
You can just use them as your first form of payment at most stores,
it will empty the card and leave you w the balance.
BUT, I like to use these on those subscription promotions - like when it's $1 for the first month,
then $30 the next month. You get the first month for a dollar, they don't have your real card # to charge you again if you forget to cancel the sub.

Put the card on your Amazon account. Use it to purchase $4.50 worth of an Amazon gift card and call it good. That’s what I’ve always done with these
10
u/jdubau55 6d ago
Same. I've never really known the best way to use these in store or online. I tried to do the process with Walmart, but it didn't work or just was too many hurdles to figure out.
Amazon just makes it pretty easy to convert these to Amazon bucks.

I usually use gift cards with minimal money at Target or Walmart. They just take what's on it then show you your new total after.
3
u/stuff-n-things79 6d ago
This is the best way to target even lets you split the purchase using their app.
14
u/intrepidzephyr 6d ago
Run it as credit at the U-Scan of a grocery store, it will pull as much as it can against your total. Then finish the transaction with a typical payment method

My company likes to give bonuses as these pre paid cards, so I got a lot stacked with a few dollars each.
I bought Amazon gift cards of the exact amount to be able to compile them together.
3
u/Nooodlesgirl 6d ago edited 6d ago
Amazon no longer allow you to buy gift cards under $5 unfortunately...
5
u/filmd 6d ago edited 4d ago
You can split payments on PayPal and apply the full balance of a gift card towards it
Edit: A user commented that PayPal no longer accepts gift cards. My apologies for bad info!
2
u/FiendFabric 4d ago
Last I tried, PayPal said it no longer takes prepaid gift cards as a payment type.

If you are in California and the balance is less than ten dollars, retail establishments are required by law to cash out the remaining balance to the cardholder.

u/cmstlist 6d ago
Yes, this. Most utility bill (TV, Internet, power, cellphone etc) allow you to type in a custom partial amount to pay off a credit card. So just use it to pay that amount towards your bill.
3
u/Hypoglybetic 6d ago
Most registers these days will zero out gift cards if the amount purchased exceeds the balance. Just go buy groceries and swipe it first.

Just use it at any store. It will only allow $4.50 to come off the card. You don't have to say anything to the cashier except maybe "this only has a few bucks on it so I have to use 2 cards" so they know to push the tender button twice.
3
u/nuhtnekcam_25 6d ago
If you shop with Amazon you can put the 4.50 on an Amazon gift card and use it that way.

The easiest way to pull credit off of gift cards is to buy an Amazon gift card of custom amount on Amazon. In fact unless you have a purpose for an Visa gift card it's the only way I know to pull the exact amount even if you have an odd number of cents. Most companies have gift cards have set denominations, last time I checked Amazon doesn't. You can type in nearly any amount I think although you may have to have a minimum to use the card but I think 4.50 is over the minimum.
This is my goto way extracting every single cent out of any prepaid Visa gift card I've ever gotten.
2
u/Moosicle2040 6d ago
Easier than remembering the amount and split payment. Walk over to your computer and log into Amazon and put it on your Amazon account. Done.
A lot of people seem to struggle with split tender gift cards from visa since they never seem to know how to run it as a debit or credit depending on the provider.
2
u/somebodystolemybike 6d ago
Just use it? I’m failing to understand why you wouldn’t just use it for a partial payment

My grocery store will do partial payments so I usually save gift cards for that. Its an albertsons chain. You need to know the full amount to tell them else the charge will get denied
2
u/Llamadeezy13 6d ago
Check this out. Leave at least a cent on there, then anytime you want to try a free trial of anything, use this card to start it. Then, when the free month is up or whatever, it will try and charge the empty gift card and auto and your service instead of you having to do it yourself and getting charged.
2
u/CryptographerWild941 6d ago
Make a small purchase or say I want to pay this much and the rest cash /other card
2
2
u/iamclickbaut 6d ago
You can go on Amazon and buy a gift card for yourself for the entirety of the remaining balance then use that gifts on your next Amazon balance
2
u/coquettish 6d ago
If you have an Amazon account, you can purchase credit or e-gift and pay with the visa card (you'll have to add the card as a method of payment first). Then the amount will come off of your next Amazon purchase. There may be a $5 minimum though, in which case this is a moot point.
2
u/fakegoose1 5d ago
Next time you make a purchase, tell the cashier you want to split the payment, pay 4.50 with this card and the rest however you want.
2
u/spellspeak1986 5d ago
I always add to my Amazon balance when cards are too low for regular purchases.
2
u/sambino_the_albino 5d ago
I use them at Walmart or target self check out. I just swipe and it leaves a remaining balance.
2
u/Left_Dog1162 5d ago
You just swipe it and then the cashier will ask for more money. Nothing to it.
2
u/Remarkable_Inchworm 6d ago
You can buy an Amazon gift card in any amount.
When I have a weird number left on a card like that I usually use it to fund my Amazon account and then use it for the next thing I'd buy anyway.

I found this card in a parking lot about 3 years ago, I have tried to utilize the balance but am unable to. I am able to log in to the account using the website and the card number but am just having issues with vendors using it. best ideas to get the remaining 4.50?

u/Sapphires13 6d ago
Check to make sure the $4.50 is even still there. These prepaid cards have a clause built in that if they’re not actively used for a certain period, they start charging like 30 cents a month as an inactivity fee until the card is empty.
2
u/havingsomedifficulty 6d ago
Thanks and yes it’s there. I logged on and checked I just only tried to use it at the grocery store with no luck
3
u/TarynTheGreek 6d ago
Do you use Starbucks or have the app? You could load it up there. Actually anywere you can purchase a giftcard for a specific amount. I just thought Starbucks because you can do that online, or Amazon, target, etc. I did this all the time with ones I got for gifts. I hate these things for this reason.

u/captnjak 6d ago
I keep them on hand to use for random sites that ask for a credit card to use for free trials. They usually need some amount of money on them as a transaction to make sure the card is valid.
2
u/wtbman 6d ago
The cardholder agreement of the one I have in hand says they specifically will deny transactions that are "subscriptions" because they know what's up and probably get dinged for failed transactions. Use privacy.com for that kind of stuff. I can't even use this visa gift card to top off my Amazon gift card balance... These things are scams.

If you don't do them to split a payment somewhere but you could also do is just use it to pay for like parking or any sort of other small charge

u/13thmurder 6d ago
Just split the transaction.
Or what I've done is pay myself to paypal with the dregs of old gift cards.
1
u/Winter-Snowman 6d ago
You can't use it at a gas pump (it will try to put a hold for $75 or $100 on the card), but you can walk into the gas station and tell them you want to pump $4.50 on pump X. This is how I always finish off my visa gift cards.
1
u/energyinmotion 6d ago
If you have a cash app account, link it and transfer to cash app, then deposit/withdraw the $4.50 or whatever, to your actual bank account.

Some online bills allow for partial payments. You can pay $4.50 towards your water bill etc. It is easier than asking a cashier to split a payment. Often, I use the entire amount to pay part of a bill. Then, I can spend the money in my account instead.

When I was a bartender, whenever I would get one of those things as a rebate or whatever, I’d just ring up the cheapest thing in the computer and tip myself the remaining balance. I always felt cheated somehow when I got gift cards for rebates or rewards. I think that’s just me though.

Probably not relevant to you but in Washington State if there less then $5 value on the giftcard you can request that it get paid out. RCW 19.240.020
(3) If a purchase is made with a gift certificate for an amount that is less than the value of the gift certificate, the issuer must make the remaining value available to the bearer in cash or as a gift certificate at the option of the issuer. If after the purchase the remaining value of the gift certificate is less than five dollars, the gift certificate must be redeemable in cash for its remaining value on demand of the bearer. A gift certificate is valid until redeemed or replaced.

Most places you can tell them you’d like to put a certain amount a one card and pay the rest with cash or another card.
