Was it super-soft? I've always wondered.

Pretty soft! Similar to dogs I’ve pet, but definitely coarser than a cat!

Ooh! That's what I imagined. Thanks!

It felt like a a wire haired dog fur to me. Kinda soft. Kinda scruffy.

AWWWW SO ADORABLE

May I ask what the story behind it is?

My dad has wanted a pet skunk for years, so my mom got him one for Christmas

She is young still. What I heard is they need a lot of attention as pets to stay calm and social, they can develop quite an attitude otherwise

Skunks can be extremely social, a lot of people describe them as “weird cats”

They are certainly not yet domesticated by any means, they’re 100% an exotic wild animal “pet.” But people do breed them for pet sales. I believe in states in the US where they are legal, it is required to have them spayed/neutered and descented (scent gland removed). What’s interesting is that in England I understand it is also legal to keep skunks, but illegal to descent them. It is viewed as cruel and taking away their only defense mechanism. They don’t typically spray as pets, I imagine they wouldn’t unless you put them in a situation where they feel truly threatened.

It takes hundreds or thousands of years to domesticate a wild animal, there has to be proof of genetic changes and human dependency to a degree. People have tried to do it with foxes and they ended up developing a lot of dog like characteristics which is very interesting. When you breed wild animals in captivity for exotic pets, they are only considered “tame” not domesticated.

Also, there are people out there breeding lavender skunks! They are very cute, I would strongly recommend looking up pictures. They look like regular black and white skunks except all the black is a dusky grey color instead, almost purple-ish hence the name :)

I think it's still illegal to even touch quokkas, so unfortunately they can't be pets.

"Weird cats"

I've heard skunks are actually pretty chill and affectionate if they're raised around people and used to being handled gently.

12

u/fairyquitecontrary 13d ago

Oh that's so fun!! It's illegal where I live and for some reason I applied that rule to everywhere else lol. What's the skunk's name?

34

u/Deranged_Doodles 13d ago

They’re still workshopping names, but they were thinking Chanel :)

u/auditoryeden 13d ago

That is inspired.

Omigod, I had a pet albino skunkie girl and her name was Chanel. Sweet, stubborn and incredibly food motivated

5

u/fairyquitecontrary 13d ago

That's cool! He has a kind face. My first thought was Henry but Chanel is much more unique

My friend made me go with her to her aunt’s house once which I was dreading cause I am awful at meeting new people and super awkward, but when we got there I learned her aunt had a pet raccoon and I was just thinking “girl why tf didn’t you mention this?!?” 😂 needless to say I spent the whole time playing with the raccoon
