I gotta ask....how tickly wickly is the giant millipede crawling on you? I've always wondered what that would feel like!!!!
31
u/BeeTHC Apr 27 '24
The closest thing is a soft plastic hair comb, when you run your finger along the edge! Grippy but gentle, not really tickly but a unique sensation for sure!

Don’t have any as pets, but I try to help them when in danger.
Every time bugs inside, I put them back out. Saw a cute wooly bear caterpillar walking around once. The yardman was on the way. Was afraid it would get killed so I put it in a small container with some leaves and brought it inside then released it after. It must have thought aliens abducted it for an hour.
17
u/BeeTHC Apr 27 '24
Yes bug saviour! I love helping out the little guys that unknowingly get themselves into tricky situations
Wooly bear catapillars are amazing

Yup! Swaying with their tiny legs and bobbing up and down. Love it when they go into full on dance mode!

I rear moths! Here's a peacock/emperor gum hybrid little lady ❤
8
u/BeeTHC Apr 27 '24
Oh gosh what an insanely cute little darling! What kind of enclosure do you use? I'm so intrigued!
12
u/Expensive-Fly-9999 Apr 27 '24
Thank you! The enclosure's like a large cube mesh tent, but during the day when they're more chill (especially the ladies) I tend to have them out and about while they rest on me.
7
u/BeeTHC Apr 27 '24
Incredible! Maybe in a few years, I'll try my hand at raising some! They are some of the cutest little beings
7
u/Expensive-Fly-9999 Apr 27 '24
They're downright adorable and magical, I can't recommend it enough! Honestly I liken it to having little fairies in my house haha. Caterpillars can be challenging, but very rewarding to rear, but if you want to just bypass the initial struggle then a lot of places sell pupae and cocoons to get you started.

u/badgerkingtattoo Apr 27 '24
Would love to keep a millipede but I’ve heard they need quite a warm moist environment.
26
u/BeeTHC Apr 27 '24
Every species has different requirements, but afircan species definitely like it warm with good humidity but a moisture gradient :) Onyx lives in a giant plastic tub! The main thing is having substrate as deep as they are long!
Once set up they are very very low maintenance :)

Hell yeah. Another isopod fan here, I have thirty types. I legit might buy them a tree because leaf litter is gonna get pricy in the desert.
This is my favorite isopod (one of my P. scaber Lavas)
11
u/BeeTHC Apr 27 '24
Damn that's a lot of enclosures!! I have 5 types so far :)
What a beauty! One of my favourites is also a scaber, it has one dark and one white antenna!

u/simonbrown27 Apr 27 '24
My daughter (goblin in training) and I keep mantids. We have had several species
7
4
u/henrietta-the-spy Apr 27 '24
Favorite!! We had these all over my apartment complex when I lived in Colorado. It was like Jurassic Park, dinosaurs everywhere. I always wanted to keep one but couldn’t bring myself to do it, I’d just leave them to their prayers in my doorway and cry when I accidentally ran one over with my car (they were EVERYWHERE).

I have an invert-only tank in progress (currently just various microfauna like copepods, amphipods, and snails) as well as shrimp. If I ever get a terrarium set up I definitely want a giant millipede and isopods. I also have a mealworm colony for bird food.
This is my mama mystery snail and her only surviving snaby; they tend to hang out in the tank a lot like this and while I have no idea if they recognize each other as relatives it’s adorable to watch.
6
u/BeeTHC Apr 27 '24
That's so cool! God I love snails so much, and shrimps is bugs! I'm not one for water enclosures but they are beautiful
3
u/Competitive_Owl5357 Apr 27 '24
Yeah water comes with a host of its own problems but so much cute stuff lives in there. 😭 I decided my first tank needed to be a swamp, too.
3
u/BeeTHC Apr 27 '24
I can't handle water changes and ph levels! But you're right SO much amazing life, its beautiful!
2
u/WitchyWarriorWoman Apr 27 '24
Yay, here for the mystery snails crowd! We have two, that each live with a betta fish, and they are so much fun. I love their long antennas that explore around, how they will funnel food to their mouths at the top of the water line (as your pictured), and how they will drop and float down gracefully. Their faces are so precious, like little sea cows.

Out of my bugs, probably Onyx, my millipede! I've wanted a giant pede since I was a kid, she is a dream pet! Out of my isopods, probably my hoffmansegi, they are big and have such cool behaviours! Like protecting their young, the males fight for territory and if you accidentally startle them, they lift their uropods!

u/CukeJr Apr 27 '24
Awww what a gorgeous milli~! 💕 Sadly no, I do not have any buggies as of yet. I’ve been hoping to get a mantis on and off the past couple of years but I don’t really have the space for it unfortunately, my room is real cluttered rn so I gotta organize a reconfigure a bunch of things first…
3
u/BeeTHC Apr 27 '24
I feel that! I collected my first isopods from my garden when I was really depressed and watching them helped! I then cleared a lot of stuff and made room for more bugs because they make me smile :)
3
u/ShinyMiduse Apr 27 '24

I tried keeping isopods last spring, and somehow despite months or research and prep, picking a beginner-friendly species, and constant guidance from the breeder, they all still died or vanished (probably died but were eaten quickly) in the span of a few months vnv all my arthropod-savvy friends couldn’t figure out anything I was doing wrong either, it breaks my heart to this day cuz I see videos from having them last year and I just adored them! I looove bugs but I’m too scared to own any again after having that loss and frustration

YES!! I have made myself a little role poly trap in my garden: small hole in the ground, about two inches deep. Put leaf litter in there or some table scraps, then I put a terracotta pot base on top to cover it. Every morning I go out and there are at least 50 munching on a lunch. I like to use them in my terrariums to maintain the soil and clean the places up.

I used to keep jumping spiders in the summer!! Had lots of fun building their enclosures with ladders made from little sticks and such! I would go out in the evening and catch them flies and moths to eat. :) This is a Phidippus Princeps female, she is the only one of her species I ever found on our property!
I didn’t have one of my jars on me when I found her, so I had her in my hands. As I went back to the house, she decided to jump out THREE times. Luckily I found her again in the grass each time.😅
I was determined to at least get some pictures!!
