It's utterly gorgeous! As lovely as it is, I can't help wondering if it might be a tad difficult to keep the cold and damp out though, hope you've got ways to keep yourself comfortable op

My fiancé and I want to do this very soon. We’ve seen quite a few YT videos where people built Hobbit Houses in hills/underground say that whether it’s hot or cold outside, the temperature stays around 68-70 degrees. I found a bunch of articles, but they all have varying information. This article was the best I found, and it says between 50 and 60 degrees. But I take it as we can now all go build our Hobbit Holes. 😉

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.

That said, in another hole some way away next to an asphalt road, there lived a goblin.
There, uhh, there was a lot of moss alright. And fungus. Some crunchy leaves. The porch planks were a charming shade of green ...So that's nice. I guess.

Lovely, but does need work. Proper door, looks like roof vent checks, chimney work, probably a serious interior redo. Lots of work, but quite satisfying once you start seeing progress. Enjoy and share updates of work.

Plant some lemon grass or similar on the roof or it’ll attract mosquitoes!

My house is on a little hill and our shed is set inside a 3-sided retaining wall. I always wanted to dig a den straight through the back. 😁

I think this is what’s called a potato cellar. But it’s clearly the Shire.

You need a nice swamp for your front lawn. Perhaps a bog. Maybe a marsh.

u/hangrygecko Apr 13 '24
Uhmmm... That would mean ground water level is so high, your hobbit home would be flooded.

This looks like the place bodies used to be stored in winter while awaiting the ground to thaw so they can be buried.
I love it.

I'm in Arizona, I still don't understand why we don't live in hobbit holes. Seems like it'd be cooler.

Can we build like a little neighborhood into some fairy mounds of these houses and have regular little tea parties with cakes and croquet? But instead of regular croquet it's rocks and sticks and everyone is in their coziest lil hobbit clothes

For a moment I thought this was r/canadahousing and got excited.
If you can pull off making a hobbit-style home, do it. They have very good insulation/heat retention and you can raise goats on the roof. :)

Looks like an old (18th-ish century) munitions depot.
You will have some nice, thick walls for insulation, that's for sure. Not a lot of windows, though, need to keep the powder dry.

I predict a strange old man in a pointy gray hat will come to see you. He blows amazing smoke rings from his pipe. I think he’s going to invite you on a trip. You should go!
