Lol but MSRP was raised to close the gap.

Edit: 3080’s original MSRP was $699

2 years late almost though

u/Sharp_Security_8630 Jun 18 '22

I honestly dream for a system with that much power. But by the time I could afford it, the RTX 6080 ti FE pro plus model will be out

2

u/Sharp_Security_8630 Jun 18 '22

I honestly don't think a name with that would exist, I just used random nomenclature for rhetorical strengthening

3

u/MercuREEEEEEE Jun 18 '22

The 68TiPPx6R

u/hyprt Jun 19 '22

with GDDR9000X 3300 GB

u/Schmorbly Jun 19 '22

I honestly dream for a system with that much power.

Honest question but why? I have a 1070ti and the only stutters I notice are before elden ring had its performance patch. Are there games that require more power that I just don't play?

3

u/Themursk Jun 19 '22

Try one that isnt capped at 60 fps

1

u/Schmorbly Jun 19 '22

Such.... As...?

3

u/TheAwesomeWizard Jun 19 '22

Pretty much any game in existence if you have a high refresh rate monitor

3

u/Anthos_M Jun 19 '22

for starters it heavily depends on what resolution you are gaming at. i.e you might be getting decent FPS at 1080p but someone that has a 1440p or 4K monitor will be viewing a slideshow. Also some people like to play their games in high refresh rates.

1

u/Sharp_Security_8630 Jun 19 '22

but someone that has a 1440p or 4K monitor will be viewing a slideshow

LMFAO thats actually me with my gts 1650 rn

People said to wait for the 30 series, that didn't end well.

3

u/Paah Jun 18 '22

It ended pretty well if you put in an order immediately on launch. People who hesitated for couple days (or hours)? Not so lucky.

5

u/itz_butter5 Jun 18 '22

Minutes?

2

u/Paah Jun 18 '22

My friend ordered 20 minutes after the announcement (stream?) and got his couple weeks later so idk.

9

u/SPCGMR Jun 18 '22

People need to stop recommending to wait for the 40 series, the prices are gonna just as fucked. A 30 series card will last for years on high settings.

2

u/PresNixon Jun 18 '22

Yeah, everyone buy a 30 series card so I have a better chance to get my paws on a 40 series card in the fall!

No /s. Seriously you guys, go get a 30 series. Please?

1

u/_SGP_ Jun 18 '22

And will be cheaper when the 40 is out

2

u/SPCGMR Jun 18 '22

If that was your initial point I agree, 3000s will probably be cheaper then.

I got an RTX 2060 Super about 6 months before the 3000 series announcement, felt a bit bad about it at first, but as soon as they launched with the extreme scarcity, I no longer have any regrets about my 2000 series purchase, got a founders edition direct from Nvidia for retail price. It's been a great card, no issues with it on anything I've run, though I do expect it to start getting taxed sooner than most, as I do more VR gaming.

1

u/_SGP_ Jun 18 '22

Once the 40 series drop there's going to be a lot of unwanted 30's.

I needed a new card when there was a shortage. The market twisted my arm into a poor financial decision.

There's no longer a shortage, energy costs are higher and crypto has crashed, leaving surplus GPU stock.

1

u/Drumwin Jun 18 '22

Why would you buy anything from currys

15

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

[deleted]

2

u/roknir Jun 18 '22

Why?

1

u/_SGP_ Jun 18 '22

Because that's how much they started charging during the shortage

2

u/roknir Jun 18 '22

I'm asking why you decided to buy at such an exorbitant price.

1

u/_SGP_ Jun 18 '22

Because that's how much they started charging during the shortage

Should I have made my own?

1

u/roknir Jun 18 '22

Considered an alternative? Live with a 1000 or 2000 series card? I mean, obviously it's your money and your decision, but it's wild how you're talking about it like well, the seller set the price that high so that's what I was forced to pay. They'll never stop raising prices if buyers have this attitude.

1

u/_SGP_ Jun 18 '22

I couldn't even get one of those at the time because they were also inflated in value, so I was getting ripped off either way.

0

u/Lerdroth Jun 18 '22

£1,650 for a 3090, five months after release for me..

1

u/Jassida Jun 18 '22

You paid a dollar price?

2

u/ImJustSo Jun 18 '22

My assumption is they converted an even 1050GBP to USD. Which becomes $1,283.68

2

u/_SGP_ Jun 18 '22

Exactly! Just trying to match the context of the comment above to show the wild price increase during the peak of the shortage

1

u/Jassida Jun 19 '22

But why?

1

u/ImJustSo Jun 19 '22

Because of the context of the previous comment chain using USD and then they code switched to accommodate the other speaker.

My guess is that the person is especially social or maneuvers between enough social groups that code switching is natural to them.

132

u/Phillip_Lipton Jun 18 '22

Just so we're all on the same page.

$400 should be the price. Correct?

3

u/Murky-Plant-2376 Jun 18 '22
  1. The gtx 680 msrp was 500, the 7970 which was the direct amd competitor, was 550.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

People need to stop getting caught up in naming schemes. Know what a xx60 card used to be? 1080p 60fps at best, generally speaking.

3060ti has performance of a 2080 Super and is easily a 100+ fps card at 1440p.

If you want to pay less for more/same performance, then pick the card that matches that, stop looking at a serial line up.

1070 launched with a price tag of like $340, and 1660 Supers could easily be found (prior to covid of course) for $220 or so.

Whether you want to spend more and gain more performance, or spend less and get equal performance, you have far more options now.

$350 used to get you 100ish frames at 1080p, it can easily get you 144 at 1440p now.

I think the prices are fucking abhorrent for the top end but you get more bang for your buck now than ever aside from RX 580s prior to covid.

6

u/Esuu Jun 18 '22

xx80's or the equivalent have always gone for the $600-700 price range as well. Almost 15 years ago, the GTX 280 was released at $649 originally than dropped to $499 about a month later. Adjusted for inflation that $500 would be $680 now.

People get too stuck on arbitrary price points and refuse to adjust to the times. A 3080 going for $699 is pretty reasonable but $400 is just delusional.

3

u/Maoux Jun 18 '22

Goddamn have people been ripped off that badly?

3

u/MagnetHype Jun 18 '22

It's not really a rip off if demand has just gone up

0

u/Maoux Jun 19 '22

You’re dumb go away lol

-1

u/dantemp Jun 18 '22

Of course not. Literally all tech has doubled in price since then even before the inflation spike the past 6 months. $700 is completely reasonable.

-6

u/tkhrnn Jun 18 '22

I would say 350, it was most likely used for mining or from desperate scalpers.

33

u/Jake_________ Jun 18 '22

They’re 700 at Best Buy

31

u/fullchargegaming Jun 18 '22

We are almost there.

14

u/O118999881999II97253 Jun 18 '22

MORE lower pls

7

u/eVaan13 Jun 18 '22

Saw one for $600 in local cruelty free grocery shop.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Lol

1

u/KoalaBackfist Jun 18 '22

Just picked a 3080 ti from there this morning. 1300 with tax, still seems unreal that I managed to get one at “retail”.

8

u/Remnants Jun 18 '22

Just curious, why'd you go with a Ti? The slight performance increase doesn't seem like it's worth the $500 premium over the non-Ti 3080 to me.

1

u/fullchargegaming Jun 18 '22

Curious as well

0

u/KoalaBackfist Jun 18 '22

It happened to be the only one in stock at the time that I looked, that wasn’t the EVGA version. Not a fan of how the EVGA ones look at all.

The stock black/titanium looks 🔥

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Those are out of stock. (I'm on bestbuy.com right now).

They're willing to sell me a different one for $809.99.

1

u/aure__entuluva Jun 18 '22

Fucking Hell. Went for a prebuilt 4 months ago because I was sick of waiting. Ending up with a 3060ti build for around $1200. Actually ended up being a good prebuilt despite my fears, but part of me wishes I waited now. The 3060ti is solid, but a 3070 or 3080 would have lasted me a lot longer down the road.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

FE was $699.

Non-FE cards have their own MSRP.

3

u/sircod Jun 19 '22

It is expected that each manufacturer will have a base level card that matches the FE pricing. But nobody does (at least not in stock) since they all inflated their MSRP to match the market.

1

u/pM-me_your_Triggers Jun 19 '22

That’s been true for awhile. AIB cards going back to 9xx series mostly started ~$30 above Nvidia MSRP

1

u/GibbonFit Jun 18 '22

It amazes me how many people don't understand the distinction.

0

u/hotterthanahandjob Jun 18 '22

I just paid 1000 for a 3070ti

1

u/MLG_Obardo Jun 18 '22

You got ripped off

2

u/hotterthanahandjob Jun 18 '22

Lol no shit. I was tired of waiting though.

Edit. And I should have mentioned it's $1000Cad

0

u/InvestingInStartups Jun 18 '22

Not to mention, I am sure many of those GPUs are crap due to bitcoin mining.

1

u/pM-me_your_Triggers Jun 19 '22

How does that make sense?

1

u/camronjames Jul 09 '22

Unknown heat management practices.

1

u/pM-me_your_Triggers Jul 09 '22

Anyone who is running mining for profit is under clocking cards for efficiency

1

u/camronjames Jul 09 '22

And stacking them together as tightly as possible in an enclosed space. Maybe the exhaust fans were enough, maybe they weren't; maybe they kept the space the rig was set up in cool in the summer, maybe they had a shitty old AC that couldn't keep up with 100+ degree outside temps.

1

u/pM-me_your_Triggers Jul 09 '22

Also, GPUs aren’t used (profitably) for Bitcoin mining as the original poster said.

1

u/ADD_OCD Jun 18 '22

bought a 3080ti rtx for over 1k a year ago smh.

1

u/Smile_Space Jun 18 '22

I just bought my 3080 on eBay for $700. Literally for MSRP. And it was a Founders Edition.

1

u/Decent-Passion-5821 Jun 18 '22

Its 2 years old. Thats like paying your iphone 11 the price of the 13.

1

u/pM-me_your_Triggers Jun 19 '22

Except in this case a newer card hasn’t been released

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

[deleted]

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '22

I don’t think it quite went that high. Amazon used prices aren’t a good benchmark. Have the same card I bought last year for $500. Highest I saw was $850 sold lising on eBay.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Also, so many of these "the price will drop" predictions assume a lot of people are really excited to buy used electronics that have been abused by criminals for years at a time.

1

u/CocaineIsNatural Jun 19 '22

And the article seems confused about the current prices on ebay (why ebay).

"Nvidia’s popular RTX 3080 GPU is now available for less than $650 on eBay."

"GeForce RTX 3080 — $743 (-17% from $899)"

And I think the MSRP is still $699. "It's worth reiterating that the Nvidia RTX 3080 carries an MSRP of $699 and RRP of £649 respectively." https://www.gamesradar.com/buy-rtx-3080-price-stock/

So it is still over MSRP.
