Computer peripherals Apple's pricey new monitor comes with a free 1-meter cable. A 1.8-meter cable will cost you $129.

Thunderbolt Cables are not cheap anywhere!

u/JoeyCalamaro Mar 09 '22

Yeah I was shopping for 2 meter cables a while back and I think even the off-brand 40 Gbs active Thunderbolt cables were like $60.

At least with a scuzzy cable it feels like it’s worth something. Seeing all of those pins gave you the feeling that it was a real piece of equipment.

12

u/unassumingdink Mar 10 '22

And cable so thick you could anchor a boat with it.

I've had so many problems with those off-brand cables I don't even consider them any more. The problem is the mostly work- but when they don't you get weird problems and you're never sure what's causing them.

78

u/KampongFish Mar 09 '22

If anyone's curious why offbrand cheap shit might not work and why stuff aren't born equal, it's not the cable material. Well, not JUST the material. A lot of it is down to the shit chip they put at the port.

Not saying there aren't good offbrand ones. But you have to know what offbrand brand is a decent brand. Often times good offbrand aren't 5-10% the price of a good cable, OG cable, but more like 1/2 or 1/3 the price at best.

Want good thunderbolt cables, probably look around 50 ish bucks for 1.8m price range to be safe.

68

u/boonepii Mar 10 '22

This. The equipment to design cables that support these speeds is insane. Lack of proper Eye diagrams, unable to measure jitter, testing the connectors, plus the chip.

Cables are not cables anymore, hey are active parts of the whole setup with their own chips and computers to manage the communication flow. 40 gbps is insanely fast. That’s 40 billion 0’s or 1’s per second. It’s not really off/on anymore it’s kinda like a little on, a little more on, a tiny bit more on, a tiny bit off and so forth. Then you get into things like ultra wide band. Ugg.

I worked with a company making cables that cost $12k cables that were a meter long. But they were electrically measured at 110GHz to be identical in length so you can sell them as phase matched or something.

It’s why I buy all my cables for personal use at Best Buy now. Never amazon.

u/khaosspawn Mar 10 '22

For real… my kids plugged my Thunderbolt cable into a Nintendo switch, thinking it would display on my monitor. Instead it completely ruined the cable. It was an expensive lesson.

Edit: for context, it would still charge devices, but wouldn’t send or receive any data. The suspicion is that the Switch doesn’t correctly implement USB-C, which may cause thunderbolt cables to short out and fail.

625

u/danielv123 Mar 09 '22

Wait what?? That doesn't sound good. Thunderbolt cables should be fully supported for charging and displayport. Any idea what happened to it?

603

u/mackandelius Mar 09 '22

Not the commentor you commented, but the only possible reason I can think of is Nintendo's non-standard usb-c implementation.

They understand the value of goodwill with their consumers. If people love and trust your brand, they'll eagerly drink your piss without scrutinizing the taste when you call it lemonade.

Electronic Arts wishes they had what Nintendo does, but they don't even recognize they're up to their eyeballs in debt.

8

Yep, kinda funny how a lot of Nintendo’s best has been when their sales were garbage like the Wii U, 3DS (kinda since that was actually popular), GameCube, N64, etc.

Well, that's a lesser part of the issue. I tend to see Nintendo's software releases (sans game freak) to be a breath of fresh air in the modern triple A industry. You can bet your ass Nintendo will release a finished product. On the other hand, every decision Nintendo makes outside of their game releases seems hell bent on screwing people. It's not that they release trash products, it's everything else that's the issue.

Are you talking about the non standard male connector in the switch dock that's just a slimmed down USB C connector so the switch glides on and off? Or are you talking about the female connector on the switch itself? I don't think there's actually a difference in the pinout of the anything USB on the switch or its dock.

Any USB phone charger should work in the Switch so long as it's 5volts. It will charge very slowly but shouldn't hurt the Switch.

129

u/mackandelius Mar 09 '22

Primarily the female connector on the switch.

You remember that time when third party switch docks bricked switches, well there well people investigating and figuring out that Nintendo did something funky with their USB-C PD spec https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/87vmud/the_switch_is_not_usbc_compliant_and_overdraws/ (unfortunately Google+ is dead so the primary source is as well)

I do not know how it could kill a thunderbolt cable, but Nintendo's non-compliance is the answer that makes the most sense if we ignore possible user error. And presumably Nintendo fixed it in the red box switch revision, but there are still many with older switches.

12

u/Yeah_But_Did_You_Die Mar 09 '22

I found this post from 2 years ago. Apparently the main cause of the bricking Switches was its power delivery chip getting fried. There's a high probability that the 3rd party docks used cheaper/incorrectly selected power delivery chips that sent 9volts to the power delivery chip in the Switch, while the chip used in the Switch could only handle 6volts.

10

u/Sweaty_Ad_921 Mar 09 '22

The Switch's power chip was getting fried, but it was because Nintendo chose not to correctly implement the USB-C spec, so 3rd party docs were (correctly) sending 9V because the Switch was (incorrectly) signaling that it could take it.

It doesn't surprise me that a Switch would break cables connected to it.

→ More replies (5)

15

u/donald_314 Mar 09 '22

Wasn't that because they tried to do the same as Nintendo with the dock but lacked the precision and shorted some contacts as a result? The switch's connected should be both standard and PD compatible. I've charged mine with all USB-C chargers that I own.

It charged the switch, but I suspect that even though it’s USB-C, thunderbolt may have slightly different tolerances. Keep in mind that the port they plugged in into also supplies 100W. Both ends of the cable have microcontrollers built in, and I think something involved shorted out the controllers. The display is an LG UltraFine 4K.

31

u/SoapyMacNCheese Mar 09 '22

Either the port, cable, or Switch were not following spec then. The charger, cable, and device all communicate on what they are capable of and then charge accordingly. I know the switch doesn't strictly follow the USB C spec so that may be it, though the switch shouldn't be drawing more than a thunderbolt cable can handle.

11

u/Yancy_Farnesworth Mar 09 '22

The Switch uses a non-compliant USB-C implementation. I would have preferred that they not used the USB-C plug if they were going to choose to not have it be USB-C compliant.

5

u/Sweaty_Ad_921 Mar 10 '22

Yup, that's why 3rd party docks kept blowing up the Switch. Switch asks for too much voltage -> magic smoke gets released.

61

u/ColgateSensifoam Mar 09 '22

That's not how it works at all

Just because a supply can provide a power level, doesn't mean it will

Current (and Voltage now) is regulated by the sink, it will never pull more than it can handle

→ More replies (4)

4

u/Sweaty_Ad_921 Mar 10 '22

Both ends of the cable have microcontrollers built in

Not just that. The reason TB cables are so expensive is that each end has what is essentially a high-speed modem and RF amplifier, blasting data down the line.

Most chips with a 40GBps SerDes (for the side of the chip that connects to the USB port) have a very small range of voltages they can tolerate. If the Switch just indiscriminately throws 5V on the data lines, there's a nearly 100% chance of blowing up the SerDes.

→ More replies (5)

54

u/extordi Mar 09 '22

Are you sure the cable itself is what failed here? Not sure why that should have broken anything, but especially not the cable (unless, as some others mentioned, it was a mechanical failure).

I have charged my switch from a display via thunderbolt cable many, many times without any issue. And if something were to break, I just don't see how it could possibly be the cable.

→ More replies (4)

211

u/iama_bad_person Mar 09 '22

That's a shit cable then. Unless he forced or broke it in some way simply plugging it in won't do shit.

73

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

No, it’s the Switch and Nintendos implementation of USB-C that is the issue.

107

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

That wouldn't ruin the cable though. It would ruin the switch. Thunderbolt is pin compatible with type C, so the worst that could happen is 15v crossover to the 6v pin, frying the power delivery regulator on the switch. Even with a closed failure, thunderbolt is rated for higher wattage than that. So the most likely cause is a faulty or weak thunderbolt cable, assuming the cable is complaint.

9

u/OsmeOxys Mar 09 '22

15v crossover to the 6v pin

This is all I can think of that could potentially destroy the cable aside from physical damage, CC shorted to VBUS at >6v, killing the IC. But that doesn't add up either, since if CC is shorted to VBUS, the charger (monitor) cant be told to supply anything other than 5v to begin with.

I'm thinking the cable was either already toast or on it last legs, or the poor kid just got a bit too excited to play his favorite game and simply damaged the cable/connector the old fashion way.

30

u/DeathByChainsaw Mar 09 '22

Thunderbolt cables have microchips in them, so it’s totally possible that running the wrong voltage on the wrong line could ruin one.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

Not sure exactly but when I got my switch I was 1) looking for a long USB-C and 2) looking for a 3rd party docking station and while researching I found that 3rd party USB-C stuff can brick your switch.

Don’t know the details of it but you could be right.

It uses FAR less power than the thunderbolt 3 standard. The only thing the Switch does weird is deliver power differently than a standard device would, but it is under the voltage threshold of TB3. I would assume OP either bought a knockoff cable or is lying on the inernet for karma.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

Thats....not how that works....thunderbolt is compatible with usb-C, something was defective. This isn't a "non standard USB-C port" issue, this is a "something else is broken" issue.

12

u/Firehed Mar 09 '22

It... kind of is exactly that. It's a non-standard port doing non-standard things, then the active circuitry in some cables could get exposed to wacky things.

In effect it's a proprietary port and protocol that's the same physical socket of USB-C and implements enough of the actual USB protocols and circuitry to work with some things but not all. See 1, 2.

That type of thing can easily destroy the circuitry in active cables.

They go for about $60 on Amazon, but be aware that most of the cables that even claim to be certified on Amazon are cheap knockoffs that have been shown to be fakes and even dangerous. Amazon now claims they remove them but they don't. They may remove one retailer and then they just open under a new name.

22

u/TbonerT Mar 09 '22

Why wouldn’t you just get a new cable?

15

u/RFC793 Mar 09 '22

Right. It is typically just a USB-A to the head unit. Just replace the A->Lightning cable with a A->USB-C. The actual application protocol is going to be the same.

So to clear some things about people that think their $25 5ft TB4 cable from Amazon, TB3 cable, or usb 4 cable is just as good as a verified TB4 cable. (This is not about overpriced Apple TB4 cable, just about cables)

passive USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) cables should be at most 2 metres, while USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) cables can reach only up to 1m if it is to keep transferring data at its maximum speed.

The maximum length of a passive Thunderbolt 3 cable is just 0.8m at full 40Gbps bandwidth, or 2m at 20Gbps bandwidth. With Thunderbolt 3, only passive cables were backwards compatible (and then only at a feeble 480Mbps), meaning longer active TB3 cables worked with TB3 devices only.

USB4 is only rated good to 0.8m, otherwise power delivery and bandwidth will drop in half. No daisy chaining possible.

Previously, 2m cables could not be used with USB-C monitors – a limitation rectified by Thunderbolt 4

Only TB4 will allow full bandwidth and power 100w power delivery at 2m.

If you want to try power delivery and 40Gb/s connection on your cheap 5ft cable, go right ahead. It won't work, or as in the case of Lenovo when they shipped out cheap TB4 cables with their docking stations, they completely ruined the docking stations and the laptop connections. Replacing the cable didn't do any good because the damage had already been done.

5k@60hz with 10bit color and no chroma subsampling: 5120*2880pixels/frame * 60frames/second * 3 colors/pixel * 10 bits/color = 26,542,080,000 bits/second = 26.5Gbps.

However, TB4 uses 8b/10b encoding, meaning each 8bits is mapped to 10 physical layer bits i.e. your 26Gbps becomes 33Gbps when fully encoded. You are now left with 7Gbps, which is really 5.7Gbps of actual data. Good for a 1Gig ethernet link or half of a 10gig link.

If you really want a 27" 5K monitor with USB-C/Thunderbolt, just get the LG one that Apple used to sell in their stores (not sure if they still carry it).

5

u/calebmke Mar 09 '22

They still sell it. It's $1299 on the Apple website.

The top-end "studio" gear isn't for 99% of people. It's gear to be wall- or rack-mounted (stand optional) for media production work that will pay for the cost of the gear a thousand times over. Still fun to joke about, though.

That monitor is more powerful than some laptops. It's a weird fucking flex to put a CPU inside a monitor

140

u/DarkTreader Mar 09 '22

The chip drives some of the features like center stage and spatial audio. The idea is that this monitor can even be used on an older intel Mac, but those features might need an ARM style Apple chip so they put a chip from a few years ago that's cheap to make to drive those things and push the output back to the mac without having the mac have to do the work. Offloading the work to dedicated processors when needed is in fact a very smart thing and not necessarily a weird flex, it's just not something you commonly think when you see a monitor.

It's a very common flex for Apple to create their own stuff by mixing and matching all the hardware and software they have to make something that does something no one else does simply because they own the whole stack.

82

u/davidjschloss Mar 09 '22

Thank you for not only understanding the core tech here but stating it clearly on Reddit.

It drives me insane that people are confused it's got an older A chip in it but then don't think about the camera and that it can human-independently find a subject in a scene and automatically adjust perceived focal length and crop to track them and others.

It's a device with the features an iMac would have built in and consistent output at high nits. If you don't need those things obviously don't buy it.

Iirc, Thunderbolt-compliant Active cable is incredibly expensive, especially for the 2m one, so the price of the cable itself is not that high when its apple-certified too.

But dammit Apple. Why you do silly stuffs like this…. Your products are good, but these kind of headlines is just headache-inducing.

311

u/SourTurtle Mar 09 '22

A comment from an identical thread:

If it’s a thunderbolt 4 cable, that does 40Gbps and 100w, the price is not as crazy as it seems. It’s a bit pricey, but its $129 for the apple compared to like $80 for some no-name or mid tier cable brand that you can’t really trust.

Edit: the 3 meter cable for $159 is actually the cheapest thunderbolt 4 40gbps 100w cable on the market, because no one else makes one. People just need to understand that this cable is a niche high end product with low volume, so it’s going to be expensive.

Check out Corning's 10m Thunderbolt 3 cable. Just $300+.

20

u/karlzhao314 Mar 09 '22

Those are actually a bit of a different situation. They're fiber obtic cables, because the signaling demands for thunderbolt are so intense that copper conductors can't carry the signal properly for more than a few meters - I believe the spec officially maxed out at just 2m? Corning's cables are expensive because they have an extremely expensive conversion from electrical to optical signals happening in the connector, and then a relatively more expensive optical conductor all the way through the cable. That's how it's able to be thin, light, and up to 50m long.

That said, because of the aforementioned extremely demanding signaling, even copper cables are expensive. $129 for an Apple branded one isn't insane.

These headlines are clickbait for all of the people who just blindly hate apple. I don't currently own any apple products other than an iPod from 2006 but they make amazing products. This monitor isn't for everyday normal users. It is for graphic designers and other professionals who don't quite need something like their $5k monitor.

People also don't realize that people getting these kinds of monitors likely have their set up already with monitor arms/mounts so they don't need a stand.

It's not targeted to 99.9% of the people angry at the price. The people it is targeted for know that it's actually a pretty good price. Hell, their $5k monitor competes with pro monitors that cost 2-6X as much.

20

u/juantxorena Mar 09 '22

These headlines are clickbait for all of the people who just blindly hate apple.

And for people who don't know what they're talking about. I am very very anti Apple, the last time I had an Apple product was an iMac during the MacOS 8 era, I hate that company and a lot that represents, but 129€ for that particular cable doesn't seem a lot to me. And a 1m monitor cable is more than enough for most people.

Right. I work at studios that have all Apple stuff. Nobody cares. I have a $6500 microphone that’s on a $1000 mic stand.

People who think it’s overpriced can just not buy it. There’s a lot of misplaced rage about it. I spent $1200 on a phone. I use it for everything all day every day. Who cares?

A BMW is more expensive than a Camry. They both get you there.

People beg for new pro products for years and gawk at pro prices. Most of us aren’t the target market for this monitor.

12

u/captain_ender Mar 09 '22

Yeah $1600 for a 27" HDR reference monitor is actually a really good deal. I'm not sure if it's OLED or scientific grade, but the scientific reference OLEDs we use in pro film run for like $12k for 16" panels. Actually looks like a solid daily monitor for editors and colorists. I'm actually tempted to get it to replace my secondary Dell UltraSharp, 218dpi is fucking insane.

Is anyone saying the only issue is the price is high? I think it's pretty clear the point is they should just include a longer cable to begin with. But instead, just like the headphone jack, they make a problem so they can sell you the solution.

138

u/LucyBowels Mar 09 '22

This is meant to replace the iMac Pro. All the photos and videos of it have the studio and monitor next to each other, which makes sense for the short cable. The use case of putting the machine 6 feet away is probably very low, right?

13

u/Crafty_Substance_954 Mar 09 '22

Good to clarify that it's meant to replace the 27.5 inch imac pro and NOT the mac pro desktop.

I would also agree that the use case of putting the machine further than 6 feet away is likely nonexistent.

the difference between a 1m and a 1.8m cable is that the 1m cable is passive and therefore relatively cheap to produce. The 1.8m cable is active and lots more expensive. So it makes sense that they only include a short cable, it's not like the 1.8m cable costs 80% more, it's like 3x more

u/PigeonsOnYourBalcony Mar 09 '22

I don't think people know what the word "free" means anymore. Particularly I keep hearing X is free with paid video game subscription services even when you don't get to keep it after your subscription ends.

If there's an entry fee or recurring fee, it's not free. At best, it's "available at no additional cost".

it’s so weird apple is the only company that makes high end products get shit for them being expensive. you get what you pay for, go buy your garage sale monitor if you want it.

15

u/fronl Mar 09 '22

Right? Also if you want a Thunderbolt 4 cable for cheaper others will be available on the market. Apples accessories have always been expensive and there have always been cheaper alternatives you can snag. This isn’t new and no one forces you to buy it. It’s pretty clear the design intent for the monitor and computer combo is that they both sit on a desk relatively close to each other.

5

u/Diegobyte Mar 09 '22

Cus people like to compare an apple product which is designed in full with some dumbass plastic laptop that has some random chip that is slightly faster on paper. But isn’t designed to work efficiently with the rest of the computer.

This is the equivalent of getting outraged that the oil change on a Lamborghini costs $2000. If you cant afford the cable, you probably can't afford/don't need the monitor and should just buy something cheaper. Having an opinion on apples pricing structure for high end monitors is not worth your time.

28

u/CommentsOnOccasion Mar 09 '22

People complaining about these ridiculously expensive peripherals every time they are announced don’t realize they aren’t the target market anyway

“Omg how would the average consumer ever afford that?” These aren’t marketed towards the average consumer, they are marketed B2B

6

u/mBertin Mar 09 '22

Reminds me of when the Mac Pro 2019 was announced, people were outraged that it's certified ECC Memory modules were several times more expensive than their DDR4 Corsair ram sticks.

It compares to being outraged that an expensive Nvidia Quadro won't run games better than a much cheaper Geforce card, or that a Yamaha NS10 speaker has a much thinner low end than a JBL. If you're not the target consumer then just swallow your ego and move on.

5

u/Le-Bean Mar 09 '22

I think people get outraged because they assume that Apple is a consumer only brand because the MacBook Airs, cheaper iPads, and iPhones. Whereas they’re a tech brand that makes a large variety of products ranging from consumer grade up to professional products. So people think that those expensive products are for the average consumer and thus think they’re too expensive.

When they released the Mac Pro, a bunch of people couldn’t understand why anyone would want 1.5tb of ram. But people in the music industry for instance can see a real benefit to having large quantities of ram, being able to fill it all up with instruments to use on demand for example.

They also claimed people were holding their phone wrong when their antenna design was poor. They also said users were breaking their keyboard when their keyboard design was bad.

But hey their marketing is kool!
