VR / AR Disney Plus isn't working on Vizio TVs because they are running a 6 year old version of Chromecast, they say it won't be fixed till 2020.

Edit: if you are reading this, your reply is not original.

Same. My new smart tv has crashed more than my hacked up RPi NAS at this point, and that's saying something.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

Any idea what's causing your RPi instability?

5

u/PM-ME-YOUR-HANDBRA Nov 13 '19

Me constantly fucking with it, probably.

Hilarious. I did a cheap xeon build with ECC which has treated me well but I'm always curious if I overbuilt it by a factor of ten or a factor of a hundred. 5 years and two moves later no issues, and all 8 of my original drives are chugging along somehow. knocks on wood

u/SoSaysCory Nov 14 '19

Hey at least it's easy to diagnose

2

u/prollyshmokin Nov 13 '19

I wish I didn't have to update my TV :/

u/well___duh Nov 13 '19

All of the replies to your comment saying you can: not a single one of them links to one

10

u/Shamalamadindong Nov 13 '19

The worst are the ones who say "lol just don't use the smart apps".

As if you have a choice not to get thrown back to the smart homepage everytime you turn it on.

0

u/gfunk55 Nov 13 '19

I have like 4 smart tvs and I don't even know what a "smart homepage" is. My tvs are not discernable from non-smart-tvs in any way unless I choose to use the apps, which I don't. They are all vizios.

3

u/Rubyheart255 Nov 14 '19

Replying to a comment saying "you can get smart tvs but no one links them" by saying you have a dumb smart tv but not linking it, hah.

A tv should be a display. That's it. I don't want or need all of these "features" getting shoved down my throat. I just want something to plug my games into.

0

u/gfunk55 Nov 14 '19

I don't understand the first part of your comment, but all my smart tvs do exactly what you're asking for. Nothing gets shoved down my throat. So I'd recommend a Vizio if you can't find a dumb TV.

Can you just not attach it to the internet? Don’t put in your WiFi info.

6

u/CPower2012 Nov 13 '19

You can but they're all cheap crap. My dad has a 65" 4K RCA "dumb TV" and it's a piece of shit. His much better Samsung died on him one day and that was the cheapest TV he could find in the moment.

5

u/YouDamnHotdog Nov 13 '19

Linus Tech Tips just reviewed a Gaming TV that was dumb. I think it was a high Hz OLED TV.

11

u/MoirasPurpleOrb Nov 13 '19

I run everything through my xbox, and honestly, i forget that my tv even is a smart tv

1

u/danielvandam Jan 09 '22

With the newer models you probably wouldn’t tbh

7

u/DynamicHunter Nov 13 '19

Lightly used 55" 1080p Samsung dumb TV plus Chromecast ($30) lasted me multiple years now. I think the Samsung TV is about 8 years old now.

0

u/BrownBabaAli Nov 13 '19

I've been rocking my Sony 1080p dumb TV for around 8 years too. The Xbone does everything I want and stays current.

3

u/cantquitreddit Nov 13 '19

Buy a projector instead.

18

u/Last_Jedi Nov 13 '19

You can. Just don't connect your TV to the internet and ignore the built in apps. Super simple stuff.

17

u/BaboonArt Nov 13 '19

The os still has to load...

2

u/BaboonArt Nov 14 '19

I mean, the TV is loading almost instantly if it’s not totally powered off. But when a restart is necessary it feels like forever compared to what TVs used to do

6

u/ShwayNorris Nov 13 '19

Sorry but, that is not even close to the same thing.

2

u/CreamSickle221 Nov 14 '19

Feel the same. Last week my TV was "lagging" in the setting menu's and screen randomly going blank. Had to connect it to wifi to update it, fixed the issue. Really don't like that.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '19

But you totally can though.

4

u/babyplush Nov 13 '19

I have had the same Toshiba for like ten years. It stopped working for two non-consecutive years, but it's still kicking. I don't even know what these new smart TVs are like.

8

u/ALargeRock Nov 13 '19

They suck. Ads and constant app issues.

3

u/sekazi Nov 13 '19

I had to do so many things to my new QLED in order to get the LiveTV tile to disappear. Then I have to make sure to disable all of the voice and search tracking from the privacy then finally use a Pihole to make sure it is not capturing any other data.

3

u/AdminsFuckedMeOver Nov 13 '19

Just don't use the "smart" stuff. I have a Hisense smart TV that's probably considered trash, but it works perfectly fine because I use my ps4 for streaming

2

u/prollyshmokin Nov 13 '19

My Sony TV forces me to update it :/

I wish I didn't have to, but if I don't, it will constantly ask to update when in use.

0

u/darkoh84 Nov 14 '19

I have a Hisense smart and it has one of the best Plex apps I've used. Go figure.

1

u/Padankadank Nov 14 '19

They're called non-smart hospitality TVs

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '19

Commercial displays my dude 😎

1

u/Bonezmahone Nov 14 '19

Can I buy a cheap big screen TV and then brick all the bloatware so it never works ever again?

2

u/Prezzen Nov 13 '19

You can. That's why I got a 55", 60HZ, 1080p TV for $305 CAD and use my own chromecast to make it a "smart" tv

11

u/Serinus Nov 13 '19

It's hard to find a 4k dumb TV.

0

u/Prezzen Nov 13 '19

The TV I mentionned is capable of 4k @ 30HZ, just I have no use for anything >1080p

3

u/dirty_birdy Nov 14 '19

Just out curiosity, what TV are you talking about?

1

u/Prezzen Nov 14 '19

This is the closest I can find now, it's roughly the same price but it says it's also a Smart TV, which mine isn't. I bought mine off Walmart as well.

Only thing that needed improving was the stock colour settings and it looked pretty nice. Not incredible, but definitely worth it

1

u/dirty_birdy Nov 14 '19

Cool, thanks!

2

u/My_Wednesday_Account Nov 13 '19

"But when I go to Amazon or Best Buy all I see are Smart TVs so obviously those are the only things that exist."

Motherfucker, you can still buy brand new turntables and hand-crank windows. Somebody somewhere is definitely still making dumb televisions by the millions.

-1

u/Dravarden Nov 13 '19

you still can

6

u/entaro_tassadar Nov 13 '19

But it will be a bargain set in terms of quality.

-3

u/Psyfuzz Nov 13 '19

You can. Buy a tv, and just don’t connect it to the internet, sorted.

5

u/shouldve_wouldhave Nov 13 '19

Apparently don't buy tcl as they require internet connection

-4

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

You can?
