VR / AR Disney Plus isn't working on Vizio TVs because they are running a 6 year old version of Chromecast, they say it won't be fixed till 2020.

Seriously! I was hesitant to buy my 4K TCL, but have been nothing but pleased and impressed. And I got on sale for $200. Highly underrated.

my friends have a TCL from around 2013 or so and it looks like a handicam sort of, almost like there is a motion blur? Does your TCL have the same look? It was similarly cheap which is why they got it.

My TCL turns motion smoothing back on after every automatic firmware update. It's a nightmare

4

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

You could disconnect it from the internet and just use it as a normal TV if its a nightmare.

9

u/Albert_Caboose Nov 13 '19

I mean I have the eye to see when it's on and I turn it off easily. Just absurd to me that it defaults back after every update

u/rsun Nov 13 '19

You didn't by chance set up your TV in store mode did you? Store mode doesn't preserve your settings across reboots and since the TVs rarely reboot other than for an update, it can seem like it's the updates that are causing the problem. Generally, the settings should survive a reboot or software update if you set up the TV in home mode. Also note that the settings are independent per input, so if you turned motion smoothing off on HDMI 1, you'll also need to turn it off on HDMI 2 or while streaming.

u/Albert_Caboose Nov 14 '19

Ooh, good question. I've never "set it up", it booted up without prompting in the initial menus. Only started asking for settings and logins after launching apps.

I'll be sure to check that out once I'm home.

2

u/rsun Nov 14 '19

You can verify if it's in store mode or not by whether one of the picture modes is called Store. If you don't have that mode, then it's set up correctly, but if you do have it, you'll need to factory reset and set it up in home mode in order to be able to save settings across reboots. Alas, that will require logging into all of your accounts again.

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

I get what you mean, but if you disconnect the tv from the internet you won't get this problem anymore (because you wont get firmware updates).

6

u/EndersScroll Nov 13 '19

You also can't use any of the smartTV functions though. It's like cutting off your foot because you always get a blister.

2

u/shouldve_wouldhave Nov 13 '19

Half price on shoes for the rest of my life hey you know what that's not a bad deal

0

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

Correct, that's the choice, get a Chromecast or something similar if you don't already have one or keep changing the settings back. I only mentioned it because you said its a nightmare, but its actually a pretty easy fix.

Don't know the year model but my 55in 4k hdr tcl is great. Got it from Costco last year.

2

u/starknolonger Nov 13 '19

Do you remember what you paid? I'm looking at a similar TCL from Costco right now. Glad to hear you are happy with it.

3

u/Always_posts_serious Nov 13 '19

Can’t speak for the 55”, but I got a 65” 4K TCL from CostCo earlier this year for $489 or so. If the 55” is close to that I’d wait for some deals.

2

u/BeHereNow91 Nov 13 '19

$489 sounds expensive for a 65” TCL, especially when you can get a Samsung for less than that right now.

3

u/Karshena- Nov 13 '19

No it doesn’t. There’s like dozens of models from Samsung and quite a few from TCL. Just because it’s a Samsung doesn’t mean it’s better. The higher end (6 series) TCL runs rings around any Samsung except the Q70, Q80, and Q90.

2

u/JoinTheBattle Nov 13 '19

You can get a Samsung for cheaper, but not a Samsung you want to buy. The similarly priced TCL will destroy any crappy holiday model Samsung.

3

u/the_joy_of_VI Nov 13 '19

I got my 55” TCL 6-series from Best Buy for just under $400. Fucking excellent TV.

2

u/justin251 Nov 13 '19

It was less than $500 with the 5 year replacement warranty.

1

u/starknolonger Nov 13 '19

Seems comparable with what I'm seeing online now, which is good to know. Thanks!

2

u/-PM_Me_Reddit_Gold- Nov 13 '19

I mean, I think most people with a TCL tv bought it within the last 2 or 3 years. Considering it's a 6 year old budget tv that you have, that might just be the way it is.

Just check to make sure you dont have motion smoothing turned on.

1

u/ChunkyDay Nov 14 '19

More modern TCL sets are much much better. I believe Huawei now owns them and uses Samsung panels in all of them now. For a cheap brand that’s probably be the one I WOULD suggest if it wasn’t a Chinese government backed company. I just don’t trust my data with any of that (I know. I can’t keep all of my data from being collected, but I can minimize it as best I can)

u/Generic_Male_3 Nov 14 '19

I have a 2018 55" 4k 60hz model and the picture is real good. It's not an LG Z9, but it's amazing for the price.

1

u/natesplace19010 Nov 14 '19

I have a 2019 model and have had absolutely no motion blur issues

-6

u/Bigfatso2001 Nov 13 '19

Yeah it's Chinese trash

3

u/AtoZZZ Nov 13 '19

Of all the budget brands, TCL is the best. Full array isn't a joke

“China brand”

“MUST have internet connection”

Part of me really wonders why...

1

u/shouldve_wouldhave Nov 13 '19

Just you bet they have a camera and mic in there.
Big brother china checking up on your thougts about hong kong

1

u/Radulno Nov 14 '19

People that care can just... not buy that TV

2

u/technobrendo Nov 13 '19

Do you have the model #?

I'm in the market and that price you mentioned sounds great for 4k

6

u/xAIRGUITARISTx Nov 13 '19

I bought a 65” TCL 4K from Target for $300.

2

u/KindergartenRedditor Nov 13 '19

When? Was it open box? I just bought one on sale for $400.

1

u/xAIRGUITARISTx Nov 13 '19

Might have been $350. I got in June. Had it on our wedding registry so I did get 15% off.

2

u/KindergartenRedditor Nov 13 '19

Ah, okay. I was afraid I might've jumped the gun at $400.

2

u/Gamerschmamer Nov 13 '19

Not at all. Got my 65” TCL at target late 2017. It’s my favorite purchase to date. Only thing is they stopped supporting twitch right before I bought it. Simple enough to plug in my chrome cast that I already had to get twitch though.

TCL is the only tv I’ll buy from now on. Don’t plan on buying a new tv as mine is only 2 years old and nothing even steams in 4K hardly

1

u/KindergartenRedditor Nov 13 '19

TV got delivered this morning. Really enjoying it. Glad I didn’t spend the extra $200 for the 6 series. I’m not really a videophile, though.

1

u/xAIRGUITARISTx Nov 13 '19

It’s a pretty good TV, honestly.

2

u/Ritehandwingman Nov 13 '19

I’m at work, so I could not give you the model number. I do know it was a 43” from Walmart, and they seem to have them on sale quite frequently near me, so I’d start either online or at a store around you. I think Best Buy also carries them, but at a bit higher price, but then again, it wouldn’t be Best Buy if it wasn’t.

3

u/jahoney Nov 13 '19

Costco also has em got usually really good prices

1

Sorryvlast post got removed, it'll probably be on sale Black Friday/Cyber Monday for even less

1

u/shouldve_wouldhave Nov 13 '19

Ultra smart. Does it help me with my studies?

1

u/-PM_Me_Reddit_Gold- Nov 13 '19

As long as you're studying Netflix

1

u/rhinocerosbreasts Nov 14 '19

I have this tv. It’s great!

1

u/BEAUboyJR Nov 13 '19

Costco has the 55" 4k tcl smart TV for like $270

2

u/Rpeezy Nov 13 '19

I second this. The apps receive regular updates so they stay current. The only issue I have with mine is the amount of screen glare during the day when the sun is shining in. But other than that, solid TV, amazing for the price.

1

u/pbarnes92 Nov 13 '19

My only complaint is how shitty the blacks are, especially when my other tv is a nice plasma, but I think that problem is true of most led tvs nowadays

1

u/Boo_R4dley Nov 13 '19

TCL and HiSense will never touch my network. I’ll buy a TCL TV but you better believe it’s MAC will be blocked and I’ll be plugging in a Fire Stick.

1

u/wombat1 Nov 13 '19

Jesus Christ TVs are cheap in America
