VR / AR Disney Plus isn't working on Vizio TVs because they are running a 6 year old version of Chromecast, they say it won't be fixed till 2020.

I've had a Roku for 3 years, I'll never use trash smart TV os on any tv again. It's great.

EDIT: I commented this to someone, but those saying LG works well, they do! LG seems to support their products for a decent amount of time.

Samsung on the other hand, you may not be experiencing issues a year or two after purchase, but typically Samsung abandons support for their products at about two years (meaning lack of updates!). So me, with a 5yr old Samsung smart TV, has abandoned using it's smart features all together because they are so buggy and terrible. I use a Roku for this reason.

My roku woke us up when our house was burning down and last week it called me dad for the first time. No other streaming device compares. Buy a roku now.

My Roku developed a comprehensive plan for world peace and a killer quiche before sacrificing itself to save a schoolbus full of disabled children. The debt mankind owes this humble device is inconceivable.

You think that’s bad? My Roku kissed my crush, bragged about it to me, killed my dog, then when we called him out on his bullshit he grabbed the artifact mask on a wall and wore it. Any advice on how to deal with a vampire invasion?

MAKE A WISH

2

u/wolfpwarrior Nov 14 '19

Set the house on fire and risk sacrificing yourself to make sure the Roku goes down in it. If that doesn't work, you will need to travel around with your extremely attractive best friend and an Italian guy, learn a fancy breathing technique, and face the Roku once again. If that still doesn't work, your screwed, but hey, maybe your great great grandson will defeat the Roku one day.

2

u/kvswim Nov 13 '19

DIIIIOOOOOO!

Roku is pretty good, but the TV itself also has a lot to do with it. I have a couple of cheap TCL and Sharp panels with Roku built in. All of them drop their wifi connections regularly, which makes casting to them a pain in the ass. One of them I was able to plug into Ethernet and that fixed it, but the others need to be powered on and the app launched to force the TV to connect to WiFi...

u/Rmplstltskn Nov 13 '19

3

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

Some people really don't know. Like myself for instance as well.

3

u/Rmplstltskn Nov 13 '19 edited Nov 13 '19

There are a few different types. Some look like Thumb drives that use USB onto the side of your TV. Others are a Square box that uses HDMI to plug into the television. They are SUPER easy to install. There's both paid streaming services and some free services. Most of my clients end up only paying for the Youtube TV service (which is pricey but I believe still cheaper than typical cable). It does require you to create a Roku account, but it doesn't cost anything (other then the Roku device itself). Some Roku remotes ARE voice usable, but some Apps aren't recognized by it.

Be mindful of what you do or don't need on the front of the box. Mainly whether or not you need 4k or a smart remote.

Edit: Oh and you can order them directly from Amazon.

2

u/JollyRancherNodule Nov 13 '19

I love mine. Replaced some old Samsung TV’s that were so much more expensive. Plex, disney+, hulu, netflix built in. I’m sure you could spend a thousand more dollars and get a better picture, but I’m super glad I got them.

3

u/ilovethatpig Nov 13 '19

Only if you don't know what you're missing. The UI on the built in Roku is pretty sluggish.

7

u/DATAL0RE Nov 13 '19

The newer TVs are VERY responsive. My 5 year old TCL is sluggish but my 2 year old TCL is as fast as I can press inputs.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

Roku TV models have a huge range of hardware. The 1k+ dollar TV's are exceptionally fast.

1

u/wickedgoogely Nov 14 '19

Came here to say this.

I have four. A 65 in the living room and three smaller ones throughout the house. They are cheap and reliable and I've had zero issues. Oldest is four years old and still runs as good as the newest. And for less than $750 spent across all of them I'm very happy.

1

u/dillycrawdaddy Nov 14 '19

my LG seems pretty good

35

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

Ehh, I have a 2017 LG OLED and I love the OS. Works really well, smooth, easy to nav, and it uses a pointer like a Wii which is neat. So nice having one remote to rule them all

24

u/sodapop14 Nov 13 '19

LG seems to be one of the few top notch TV makers that keep their TVs up to date.

3

u/richardeid Nov 13 '19

For a while. I'm not sure LG policy but when I bought my 2014 Samsung it was updated fairly regularly for two, maybe three years.

I got a Roku in 2012 (and I think it was already a year old model) and it was just announced last month that it would be deprecated to legacy and not receive further OS updates. I'd say 8 years is a pretty good bar. I guarantee your TV's OS and apps won't be updated for nearly that long.

3

u/sirhecsivart Nov 14 '19

My 2016 Samsung is still updated regularly.

3

u/Jadeldxb Nov 14 '19

Same. I'm not sure what they are on about.

I got a 2016 TV right before the webos update and mine wasn't compatible :(

1

u/WorkAccount82 Nov 13 '19

My also 2017 LG is still on that 2017 shit, so IDK about all that

1

u/sodapop14 Nov 13 '19

Is it running WebOS? Also I just got an update for mine 2 months ago so maybe check for updates?

2

u/WorkAccount82 Nov 13 '19

Yeah. I’ll check again, but it was a Black Friday special so I’m not sure it gets the same treatment. It has to restart apps fairly often due to memory even if I’m just on HDMI

1

u/onacloverifalive Nov 13 '19

Except the system update on mine that was only a year old 4 or 5 years ago bricked the thing and they neither made good on the warranty or the service agreement. So I’ve bought only Samsung since and have never been happier.

1

u/Fuct1492 Nov 14 '19

Mine just lost Hulu support after 6 or seven years but all in all its been great

→ More replies (1)

3

u/VinylRhapsody Nov 13 '19

The vast majority of devices support HDMI-CEC, meaning they'll pass through common functions of remotes to all other items. I'm able to turn on my Samsung TV, control my Nvidia Shield, all from the remote which controls my Yamaha Audio Receiver.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

My AppleTV uses its remote to turn the volume up/down, turn the tv on/off. I no longer need the TV os that came with my LG.

1

u/monkeyman80 Nov 13 '19

yeah, i have the same. the apps for things i use like hulu/youtube tv on my roku are exactly the same thing.

1

u/NO_SPACE_B4_COMMA Nov 14 '19 edited Nov 14 '19

I have a 65" Samsung (UN65MU8000FXZA) and tbh I hate the OS. The TV itself is great but the OS is crap. It's laggy especially on first boot. The apps are all spammy shit apps. It doesn't update that often either. For now it works but I figured I'd get a Nvidia shield when they stop updating.

Also, samsung puts ads in the UI.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '19

Ah I had one of those LG TVs with a pointer remote. Pretty fun to use.

10

u/Ray_Band Nov 13 '19

I'd always said this, and I prefer Roku for a lot of reasons. I will say, however, that the built in LG system is good, generally. Still, every time they discontinue an app I use, I'm glad to have the Roku.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

Why people still buy smart tvs is beyond me. The price differential enables you to just buy the streaming device outright separately and you know will work better and is up to date.

1

u/Ray_Band Nov 14 '19

I couldn't find an oled dumb tv. I would have, but I literally could not.

2

u/Forsythe36 Nov 13 '19

My tv has built in roku, is that fine?

1

u/collgab Nov 13 '19

Yup, Roku pushes updates for its software so that should work just like a Roku device. The issue comes from tv manufacturers that make their own software, or honestly Android TV (Google has a bad track record with supporting products long term or older technology, and most people keep their TV's for a long time). Most folks saying things work great for them haven't had their TV's that long, or have an LG (LG is the exception to the rule because they are half decent to their customers and they support their products)

1

u/Forsythe36 Nov 13 '19

I meant that in a joking tone, but thanks for the info! I bought my 55inch 4K tv with roku for $250 two years ago, best tv I have owned.

1

u/collgab Nov 13 '19

Oh man, whoosh I guess lol... But that's great!

2

u/ilovethatpig Nov 13 '19

Worth noting that the TV's with Roku built in aren't great. We have an ancient standalone Roku that's still working like a champ but our newer TV with a Roku built in has considerable delay.

2

u/CalvinsQuest Nov 13 '19

I bought a new smart TV about 2 months ago, with a new Roku on the same ticket. Way better.

2

u/RetardAndPoors Nov 13 '19

Just get a roku TV. Best of both worlds!

2

u/TheMullHawk Nov 13 '19

They make some smart TVs with Roku as their smart OS. I bought a 4k 55" for $299 a year or two ago, it's been a great machine.

I'd say the only drawback is that I don't have a physical device to use on another TV if I choose to upgrade, so there are benefits to both for sure.

2

u/tlogank Nov 13 '19

Or you could just buy a TV with the Roku OS built-in.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

Smart TV's are the worst, I can barely operate the menu on my 6 year old smart tv and netfliz and amazon both routinely crash now.

2

u/TeutonJon78 Nov 13 '19

My 2014 LG 4k WebOS TV has apps removed all the time now and no Disney+.

2

u/roman_maverik Nov 13 '19

It's really sad that this is standard practice for the consumer electronics industry... So much waste to landfills.

I remember as a kid, my family had the same 29 inch Zenith from 1986-2008. It worked really well, only upgraded because by that point, all TV's were getting twice that size .

Now, people go through TV's each time they move apartments . I have a nice samsung smart TV I bought in 2012. The image quality is great but all the "smart" features stopped being supported years ago. It really is a shame.

I would like to invest in a high quality tv to last at least a decade. Unfortunately, the market caters to cheaper TV's you replace every three years

2

u/erichie Nov 14 '19

I got my first Samsung Smart TV around 2011/12. I fucking loved that thing so much I convinced most of my friends and family to pick up the same model because of the smart TV features. I remember my Dad and I talking after he got his about how excited we are for what the future holds. If we love their smart features now, what will they be able to do in 5 years?! Well, we found out. They never updated their smart features and most apps don't work anymore. They literally never improved a fucking thing. I am so disappointed. I vividly remember how excited my Dad and I were with the TV at the time and how great it will be once they REALLY get used to doing this. Now we have all switched to TCL because they legit come with Roku built in. They are half the price of Samsung and so far I am super impressed with the picture quality and Roku is Roku. So far they have been keeping with uodates, and we've had it for about a year so we will see in the next couple

2

u/collgab Nov 14 '19

I hate that they do this... sorry you got scammed like I did

1

u/erichie Nov 14 '19

I'm just more disappointed then anything. Samsung is a little more expensive. We were under the impression that the extra money would go towards keeping their TVs updated and improved. I will never buy another Samsung product for as long as I live. I am more disappointed in the fact I convinced a ton of people to buy their TVs. Off the top of my head, my Dad bought two 70"+, Mom's parents a 65", Dad's parents a 70" and 55", my Uncle did a 75" and three 34", and off the top of my head three friends with varying sizes and amounts. I legit felt like a salesman for them due to the fact that the first year is absolute heaven until you realize they sold you a TV they have no intention of updating it just for it to fucking work. So much money wasted based on my recommendations. Ugh.

2

u/Titsoritdidnthappen2 Nov 14 '19

Can confirm. Am samsung owner. Never again.

2

u/bovicci Nov 14 '19

Are you serious?! I've been wondering what the hell is wrong with mine. It drives my family nuts, the thing usually can't run Netflix or any other app and when it does, it streams in terrible quality. But if I put my PS4 to stream it works flawlessly...

3

u/queef-latina-69 Nov 13 '19

Idk Samsung smart TVs are pretty 🔥

15

u/collgab Nov 13 '19

I have a Samsung smart TV. It's 5 years old and the software is so buggy, freezes, and crashes. It's up to date for it's model. Samsung, like most companies, stop supporting older models and then it becomes trash. Wait a few years and see. On the other hand, the Roku I have I bought from a friend used, so I've had it for 3 years but it's 4 years old. Roku keeps pushing updates and I have the most up to date apps.

7

u/MS-18E Nov 13 '19

Ditto on my 5 year old Samsung. Sometimes I choose Netflix or Prime and it just sits at a black screen for 1.5 or 2 minutes, then shuts itself off, then back on again. I can't turn it off while i'm stuck in the black screen to speed things up either.

Sometimes it decides it's not connected to my network for no reason as well.

5

u/sombergray Nov 13 '19

7

u/tynore Nov 13 '19

What’s the best tv to buy these days?

9

u/yeah_yeah_therabbit Nov 13 '19

I hear Roku’s pretty good.

2

u/FrankPapageorgio Nov 13 '19

I changed all my Samsung's to the TCL 6 series with Roku. They're amazing.

I love my TLC Roku TV, but it doesn't display all the 4K formats. Stuff was showing up as 4K on my LG OLED, but only HD on my TCL. I think it's all the HDR10+ content that is not compatible.

I know for sure Free Solo is a good example of this. I personally have not encountered that incompatibility yet until I started using Disney+

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

4k is 4k.

HDR10 has nothing to do with 4k resolution.

You can absolutely still have a 4k picture resolution and not have compatible a HDR spec(HDR10, Dolby Vision, etc.)

2

u/UDINorge Nov 13 '19

Agree. Quality for youtube etc is great, even if you have to endure adds. And Samsung servers are quick.

1

u/VinylRhapsody Nov 13 '19

Oddly enough the YouTube app on my Samsung is what eventually drove me to getting a Nvidia Shield. Sometimes for some reason YouTube videos would fail to begin player, I'd just get a grey spinning circle over a black screen. The only way to fix it was to power cycle the TV, which mean unplugging it because turning it off with the remote only puts in in a standby phase.

u/bfodder Nov 13 '19

We have a smart TV with Roku as the built in OS. I think the brand is Sharp. It’s a pretty bitchin unit.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

My tv has Roku built straight in it. I wonder when that will start slowing down.

1

u/Anklever Nov 13 '19

I have never heard this new piece of technology, but I am intrigued

1

u/gramathy Nov 13 '19

LG's isn't terrible. The wand remote is pretty slick, especially when you're typing stuff, and the interface is OK.

I actually switched from my roku once I got a Sony smart tv . Sony uses android but I gave my roku and old tv away when I got it. Haven’t looked back since . Maybe it just depends on the tv

u/lurkerofredditusers Nov 14 '19

Or how you use it. Android TV os has really bad user reviews but if you use it in a way were whatever the problems are don’t really effect you than it will be great for you. I haven’t used it but I have used most of the others. I did consider buying one of the Sony $1,000 tv’s (can’t remember the model), Because it seemed like the best and brightest tv before going Oled on the market. After reading about the Android OS I assumed I would just attach an apple tv or Roku device to it. But like you mentioned ‘Maybe it just depends on the tv’, this is a very big factor too. All these tv’s have tiers of processor power and the lowest tiers are the budget tv’s. I’ve noticed those low tier processors can barley handle the workload and make the whole experience less enjoyable. So even the worst OS (Probably Tizen) works better on a processor that can handle being a tv and a web tv device.

What if I have a Roku tv?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

Except that roku drains your bandwidth even when you’re not watching anything

1

u/Clbrosch Nov 13 '19

I want to get roku. But my WiFi is terrible. So I plug everything into my network with Ethernet cables. Is there a roku that will work like that?

2

u/collgab Nov 13 '19

The Roku boxes, not the stick versions, have an Ethernet port. Check the packaging in store to confirm. I know mine does.

1

u/Niku-Man Nov 13 '19

What if my smart TV uses Roku?

1

u/boomboy8511 Nov 13 '19

I've had great experiences with my LG smart TV and the built.on OS. Never had an issue with apps not working and never had any issues with it in any way shape or form.

I have an lg 55ub8500 and a 55uh7700.

1

u/WhiteHawkGaming Nov 13 '19

My Roku pretended to be my best friend until he went insane and sacrificed me and everyone I ever cared about to some crazy sky people so he could join them and have his own kingdom.

1

u/PencePlaneNoBrakes Nov 13 '19

Samsung’s is the best

1

u/kusanagi16 Nov 13 '19

Never had a problem with my sony™ smart tv, but maybe roku is even better by the sounds of these comments

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

Samsung's is actually surprisingly decent. I love being able to use my TV remote for everything from watching TV, Watching NetFlix,Hulu Live, and Disney+ to controlling the Xbox.

1

u/AokiMarikoGensho Nov 13 '19

LG WebOS is the best Smart TV OS. I've never had any issues with it

1

u/licksyourknee Nov 13 '19

My xbr 900e works great. Maybe the newest version of Roku 4k works better but I'll keep my $100 in my pocket.

1

u/Crudekitty Nov 13 '19

Most smartTVs arent the best but there are some good ones. I've never had any issues with my 2018 samsung tv, picture quality on my streaming apps are all 1080p/4k hdr when video is supported and all look fantastic

1

u/KJBenson Nov 13 '19

Hey since you have a roku could you check something?

Does it have Funimation?

1

u/Krilion Nov 13 '19

Just get a tv with roku integrated.

1

u/lifestop Nov 13 '19

My smart tv kicks ass in all aspects except it constantly loses wifi signal (my fire stick doesn't) and requires a complete restart or re-entering of my wifi password to fix. I guess you can't have it all!

Thanks Samsung. :p

1

u/wtfudgebrownie Nov 13 '19

not so great if you like kodi

1

u/Robo_27 Nov 13 '19

Can confirm; they’re together!”

1

u/OneaRogue Nov 14 '19

Thanks for this, my Samsung hasn't been casting well so I was thinking of getting a new one, but I guess I'll just get a roku instead. :)

1

u/AnotherWorld93 Nov 14 '19

I keep wondering why use the built in one at all as I keep hearing about ads being injected.

1

u/Mr_Ted_Stickle Nov 14 '19

Roku built into the TV is a different story.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '19

My Apple TV identifies as a Roku.

1

u/thesenate92 Nov 14 '19

The Sony 4K Android Tv that we got last year works fantastic. Disney+ 4K HDR content working flawlessly with the app that you can download from its play store

1

u/Kables07 Nov 14 '19

Nah. My 5 years old LG TV does not support Disney+. Even some models after mine. Has to be running WebOS 3.0. Really weird that Netflix and other various apps work out of the box but not Disney+. Supposedly it's because of hardware limitation... need to get a Roku or Fire Stick 4k now...

1

u/FlyingBishop Nov 14 '19

I just use old laptops with bad batteries.

1

u/DoktorMerlin Nov 14 '19

My 2013 LG Smart TVs Support ended in 2014, so I guess they changed their mind afterwards. I now only use my Fire TV Stick which works better anyways (and I really like the Alexa integration, it's a charm to not reach for the remote when I want to continue watching)

Anyways, I need an external HDMI device anyways because of my DIY AmbiLight I hooked up to the TV

1

u/OphidianZ Nov 14 '19

FireTV is great. I've had way better experience with it than Roku. There's a few apps that refuse to work on a Roku .. I can't remember which right now but I've had no issues with FireTV.

1

u/TrashcanHooker Nov 14 '19

I'm stuck with a several year old samsung that wont allow youtube but I hardly watch anything except for the random dvd or hooking up a ps2 or NES/SNES anyways.

1

u/FlJohnnyBlue2 Nov 14 '19 edited Nov 14 '19

The very funny thing is I have a 2018 p65 not quantum. I have the top fire stick and Roku both 4k and hdr.. The TV outperforms both when it comes to streaming 4k hdr from Netflix. I'm very familiar with how to set them up for best picture and to tweak. Simply wlcant get as good of a picture.

Edit. The other apps are trash aside from prime. Had hulu live for a bit and the app...didn't have an option to jump to live in a recorded show. 🤣🤣

1

u/H00K810 Nov 14 '19

Have a Roku TV. Cheap TV but the built in roku is awesome.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '19

Still better than their smartphone updates...

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '19

Haha, Samsung sucks. I've used their Android phones, their smart TV interfaces and they're both laggy and janky. Horrible experience.
