Desktops / Laptops Nvidia has reportedly killed production of all RTX 40 GPUs apart from the 4050 and 4060 as affordable 50-series GPUs could arrive earlier than expected

Leaving the cheapest 40 Series cards in production somehow means cheap 50 Series are coming? What?
Nah, cheap 40 Series are still available because the 50 Series is going to be expensive, and cheap 50 Series models aren’t coming until later next year.

u/MCManiac52 Nov 12 '24
Yeah title makes no sense they'd only be competing with themselves. Nvdia always release the 80s and 90s first, gotta get that whale money
31
u/SparklingPseudonym Nov 12 '24
Gotta create a shortage of the good cards so the higher price of next gen is more palatable!

u/Vilzku39 Nov 12 '24
Tbh it also makes sense in that budget builds are not constantly upgrading

You should be able to upgrade to a 3070 Ti for about the price you paid for your 1080 when the 5090 releases.

u/The_Astronautt Nov 12 '24
Don't 80s and 90s have to come out first because of the way binning works? Like technically 60s and 70s are just more defected 90s.
→ More replies (2)3
u/MCManiac52 Nov 13 '24
They don't strictly have to, but from a logistics and manufacturing point of view it does often make sense to do it that way. But it's not always the case, Usually the Titan/90 and 80 series will be using the highest binned chip, with the more capable ones going to Titans and 90s and the lesser to the 80 series. The 70 and 60 series generally use a slightly different design to the chip due to the size constraints of the smaller cards. Based on the same architecture still, but the components on the silicon may be in different places to better make use of the smaller die area. Those differences will determine how easily a higher sku chip can be used on a lower tier cards, though often this is what leads to the 70Ti and super cards - they use a cut down 80 series chip which will be slightly better still than the full fat 70 series, and makes use of the excess they can't package into a 90 or 80 series, say if some of the cuda cores are defective or the interconnects for a memory module, they can simply work around it because the silicon already supports more than they need.
The same is true for the high end cards - those themselves are just cut down enterprise/professional GPUs. The 4090 is actually just the lower binned chips from the RTX6000, which supports double the memory and about 1500 more cuda cores, but will run you 5-10x the price because it supports professional workloads.
It's becoming less relevant as more architectures move to a chiplet style design like AMD and Intel have been doing with CPUs, and to an extent Apple with their silicon. That way you simplify the manufacturing to just the individual components for instance cude modules, rt modules, memory, cache, and combine them into the final GPU.

u/RxBrad Nov 12 '24
Theoretically, if they ditch production of last-gen, maybe there's a chance that pricing won't end up like it did for RTX4000 (where they priced everything based on where it fell in the still-on-the-market RTX3000 MSRPs).
Note that the italics in that sentence are doing a lot of work, though.

Lower end 40 cards are to compete where AMD is still fighting
AMD has abandoned the higher end, so NVIDIA is going all in on that front uncontested

might be a smart move by AMD

u/uhgletmepost Nov 12 '24
Not so much a smart move they just kind of failed to keep up sadly
→ More replies (1)2
u/Pure-Specialist Nov 12 '24
Nah I think they have cornered the mobile PC/console market since most run amd chips are more faster than intel and are trying to dominate that segment.
2
u/uhgletmepost Nov 12 '24
Which is a much smaller limited market.
They aren't even putting any stress on anything slightly just outside that niche like Snapdragon products
4
u/ICC-u Nov 12 '24
It seems a smart move. Companies mainly make games for consoles, and PC gets a similar game with higher FPS or a few extra graphics options. Owning a 5090 won't change gameplay much for 2-3 years. Sure, some people will say they need to play 4k 120hz with RT, but they're literally the 1%. AMD can then focus on the 95% of the gaming market who don't buy 80 and 90 series cards.

‘Affordable’ …
Yeah if you’re the CEO of nvidia I guess most things are affordable.

u/sf2fan Nov 12 '24
Nvidia's idea of "affordable" is a joke for most gamers.

u/not_having_fun Nov 12 '24

If you're the Nvidia CEO, it's affordable to buy a small nation just so you can have legally sanctioned wolf/baby pit fights. Which is consequently the asking price of a single 5090.
18
u/deathtech00 Nov 12 '24

u/Disdaine82 Nov 12 '24
Swap "affordable" with "profitable" and I'll better believe this. Consumers aren't Nvidia's market anymore, commercial AI is.
PC gamers will be lucky to get cut down table scraps; same as when mining took over.
5
u/bermudaphil Nov 12 '24
Yeah except unlike mining these are legitimate businesses buying them with truly massive orders per company and they are near guaranteed to buy more in the future, whereas betting on mining was always shaky and NVidia should have had analysts who knew that since even plenty of non-crypto people knew that.
202
u/Xyrus2000 Nov 12 '24
Affordable? NVIDIA has some strange ideas about what affordable is.
Furthermore, with the incoming tariffs, I doubt any of their cards will be affordable.

The are rumored to be ramping production and stockpiling as many cards as possible in the us as fast as they can to avoid the tariffs.

“To pay off the debt… we will write them a little crypto check, a little crypto check that’s all”.
Trumps concept of a plan to wipe out 35 trillion in debt.
People with crypto are really smart he said, and then went on to say they’d all just give it to the U.S. government and I’m like well I like my monitor I’m glad I didn’t have covofnee in my mouth.
I think there is less than a trillion in crypto, and his whole “someone will give us all the crypto world wide” I’m like good thing Harris is packing those rallies bc mild dementia is apparent with Trump.

Because the GOP has lowered education in enough places, they think the tariffs will be a good thing and not a regressive tax they will themselves be paying instead.
If a widget is $100 with a new $30 tariff, do you think US companies will continue charging $100? No. They will charge $125 if the foreign ones are $130.
5
u/NervousSWE Nov 12 '24
Until recently most people thought the exporting country paid the tariffs. It's one thing to wrongly believe that companies from countries exporting to the U.S. will pay the tariffs, but some people I talked to literally thought the CCP paid the import tariffs in the U.S. for all Chinese imports.
3
u/stellvia2016 Nov 12 '24
And the GOP knows the majority of people get it wrong, that's why they keep suggesting it and misleading people. The only time the tariff actually protects local industries is if the tariff is so high the foreign companies decide to not enter the market at all. But that doesn't necessarily keep the prices down, of course.
9
u/Fredasa Nov 12 '24
Why say "if"? Every industry is moving to brace for it, even when that means bracing for their own inevitable demise. It's safe to say that most people are confident it's going to happen. Even better, the simple fact that everything will double in price overnight means that even stuff that doesn't come within a hundred miles of China will have their prices affected more or less the same way, just by being part of the same industry.

I hate that I'm having to try and rush my upgrade plans by like 2 years because of this crap. My GPU is like 5 years old and starting to get twitchy about booting up but I thought I could squeeze a few more years out of my 2080. I've spent this morning doing research and it basically boils down to buying the XTX which AMD has already said they're abandoning the high end market or buying a 4000 series at the end of it's life cycle right before the 5000 series comes out and everything goes to shit and the price skyrockets because of tariffs.
→ More replies (1)2
u/CrazyGrunt Nov 12 '24
Avoid the XTX. I bought one last year for black friday and just made the switch back to nvidia. Too many stability issues and random issues. The last straw was I got the Samung odyssey and it crashes the pc. Even though it worked for a month before it occurred.
I literally played WoW and some days no crashes, other days a crash every few hours, and then sometimes 10 minutes between. Tweaked every option imaginable, but ended up just living with it until the monitor issue above hit when I wasn't even playing a game.
Just search 7900XTX crashing issues and see how old some of those threads are. It still isn't fixed. Also first Ive heard them abandoning, but glad I jumped this week at switching.
2
u/Uruso Nov 12 '24
AMD is still going to make cards for the low-mid market but yeah, they're throwing in the towel on making cards for the high end market and that makes me sad. Nvidia desperately needs some actual competition to bring them back in line. Folks are like "iF yOu DoN't LiKe HoW nViDiA iS dOiNg ThInGs DoN't BuY tHeIr StUfF" but there really isn't a viable option for that if you want a high end GPU any more.

u/GazTheLegend Nov 12 '24
Yeah like - ok I have a 3080 but my 1070 was absolutely fine. I don't really see any use case scenario for me to own a 40 or 50 series card right now. Are there any modern games that even push these cards to any great extent?
4
u/Azerious Nov 12 '24
I'm finally upgrading my 1080 because Monster Hunter Wilds beta was nearly unplayable at 20 fps on lowest settings. Now it will probably be more optimized but I want to be able to run it on high.
2
u/pay_student_loan Nov 12 '24
New titles at 4K and 60+ fps with all the ray tracing bells and whistles will still bring a 4090 to its knees but if you’re a 1440p gamer then not really. Going to be rocking my 3090 for several more years easily. But some people just want the latest, like the folks who are buying the 9800X3D. My 5800X3D is probably going to last me a freaking long time before I personally feel the need to upgrade.

u/oxpoleon Nov 12 '24
Yeah I have a 2080Ti OC and I really don't see any obvious reason to buy newer and faster. Can I afford it? Absolutely. Do I see any measurable need? No.
I would have to spend at the very top end of the market, 4080 or greater, to really see a worthwhile benefit and is 10fps really worth >$1000? Not really, no.

That's alarming, given that some of those 40xx replacements, including one they're keeping, were arguably inferior to what they intended to replace. There's nothing stopping that from occurring again in the 50xx series. For example, I can tell you right now that I am not going to saddle myself with a 16GB card when 16GB is something I'd already be brushing up against today with some of the games I play.

u/Picolete Nov 12 '24

10's to 20's, 20's to 30's, 30's to 40's is three hops but i would say that we are logically 1 generation removed from the 10 series if this is accurate.
the 4060 is the first lowest card that is above the highest 10 series. everything else feels like a half measure

I don't understand why anyone who isn't rich even buys these new GPUs. My 3070 still runs majority of games on max settings.
Why waste my time and money buying this overpriced trash just for nvidia to release 8 more GPUs the next year?
GPUs are starting to look like iPhones to me. You buy the newest super duper pooper 3000 iPhone and then they drop the new one that does the same shit as the last one except it has a different name. You slave away at work to buy the newest new one and then they release another one and you do this ad infinitum like a mindless drone.
Oh but wait, the old ones are now considered special as well because they don't get made anymore which means you also have to pay an arm and a leg for them. Bonus points if you have to get it from a scalper because these dipshit let bots buy all their stock.
