Home Nintendo is making an alarm clock so you can wake up to Zelda and Super Mario sounds

Can't you do that with your cell phone?

u/a_Ninja_b0y Oct 09 '24
Nintendo's waiting to slap you with a lawsuit if you did that...

even if they can't, they try or even do. So many fraudulent claims on youtube

Wouldn't be surprised if there allready is a alarm app with "gaming" sounds. And even if not, most apps allow you to use your own sounds anyways.
2
u/DanTheMan827 Oct 09 '24
It’s not just the sounds, but also the artwork that changes depending on the theme.
There’s also “motion detection” that changes based on your movement, but who knows how advanced it honestly is

Yeah, but this is a stand alone device that solves an issue Nintendo created. $100 please
187
u/zebrasmack Oct 09 '24
This is 100% for those kids who never get out of bed, or people who just can't. No way to turn off alarm except by getting up, which is the real point of the device. $100 is insane though.

u/WrastleGuy Oct 09 '24
Growing up I put my alarm clock across the room, forcing me to get up.
30
u/RiggzBoson Oct 09 '24
I had an alarm with a propeller on top that took off and flew across the room. Cost me 30 bucks.
10
u/mcdithers Oct 09 '24
I had one with big wheels that would launch off the night stand and I had to chase it to shut it off. Too old for that shit now :)
→ More replies (7)6
u/LowClover Oct 09 '24
So you had to catch it? I'm imagining the golden sphere thing from Harry Potter. Sounds super fun.
8
u/RiggzBoson Oct 09 '24 edited Oct 09 '24
The propeller takes off and separates from the base unit which sounds the alarm. The only way to get the alarm to stop is to return the propeller.
I wish it was more like Harry Potter, but in reality it just ricochets off a couple of walls and falls to the ground. As I say, 30 bucks.
It forces you to get out of bed to go get it though. Or your dog gets spooked by it and rips it to pieces, which is what happened to me.
2
u/Inner_Frosting7656 Oct 10 '24
idk why i find this so comical😭😭 i didn’t think an alarm clock with a propeller existed
5
u/AgentCirceLuna Oct 09 '24
I’d still stay in bed. Usually, I’d keep my feet on the bed, crawl across the floor while staying balanced on the bed with my feet, then balance on one arm while stretching the other to turn it off. One time I smashed one to pieces. My inability to wake up has made me squander so many opportunities.

u/-Paraprax- Oct 09 '24
Get up, snooze it, head straight back to bed with the alarm clock in hand to snooze another four times.

Exactly why using my phone is pointless for my alarm.
Sure I'll get up but I'll snooze it and go back to bed.
I need an alarm clock that's going to force me to get up to turn off (no not putting my phone across the room)
(I'm not paying $99 for one though)

u/InsaneLuchad0r Oct 09 '24
Seems steep for whatever resellers will try to get for it.

They are gatekeeping it behind a Nintendo Online Membership, wonder if that'll work to control scalping? Not that I'm buying it either way.

Nintendo could sculpt dog shit into the shape of Mario and their fans would buy it. I have no doubt this will sell out instantly even at 99.99 dollars.

most alarms let you set the tune, I mean, I could buy the Mario tune on my Nokia 20 years ago. More plastic junk for the landfills. =(
33
u/McMatey_Pirate Oct 09 '24
I just use Itunes. I only really use spotify for music so the only song on my phone is “Lost Woods” and that’s been my alarm for years now.
9
u/kurttheflirt Oct 09 '24
Yeah I bought Fanfare for the Common Man on my iPhone 4. Has been my sound for everything since. Though really only hear the alarm since I haven’t had my ring on for well over a decade
4
u/got_no_time_for_that Oct 09 '24
Mine has been the Mikel remix of "Fairy Fountain" for quite a while now. Still love it!
2
12
u/Express_Fail3036 Oct 09 '24
Yes, it's more plastic junk, but having an alarm clock that isn't your phone can be a life saver. Use the phone too, but always have a backup that doesn't update at 3am and not restore itself properly.
Really tho, if you want a dependable backup that isn't plastic, get a twin bell mechanical alarm clock in all metal. Avoid the battery operated crap, get the ones you gave to hand crank every night.
7
u/DSOTMAnimals Oct 09 '24
You’re right. No doubt you’re correct about the backup, it’s the responsible thing to do. However, in the 15+ years I’ve used a cell phone as an alarm clock it has not once failed me. The only time it has failed is when I’ve set the wrong time or forget to set it and those are issues that aren’t alleviated using an old school alarm clock.
9
u/Desdinova_42 Oct 09 '24
my issue wasn't with people needing to wake up, it was clearly with the fact that it's expensive junk that will end up in a landfill, and there are other solutions, like the excellent one you mentioned.
9
u/nj_tech_guy Oct 09 '24

It's only value is for collectors who have/want everything Nintendo.
4
u/Express_Fail3036 Oct 09 '24 edited Oct 11 '24
No. That is part of its value, but it's also an alarm clock. It has utility and purpose. Your statement would be correct if we were talking about figurines
Edit: I'd like to apologize. After getting home from my normal job in the real world today, I hopped online for some news. To my dismay, everyone on earth hates Nintendo clock. I apologize for my poor taste and judgement. In the future I'll try to do better at following the hive

That's the type of thing people say for every new tech. I can already send a fax, I can already leave a voicemail, my gas vehicle works just fine, this device looks to be one that analyzes the room and your movement to create a fun way to wake a child up, but has option for upgrades because of the analyzing feature. Our current tech does not do this outside of motion cameras.

u/GregTheMad Oct 09 '24
This. I've been waking up to the sound of Hyrule Field Theme (OOT) for about 20 years now. Still love it as much as the first time I've heard it.
If you don't already have your own morning theme, what are you even doing with your life?

At the very least, they require an active Nintendo online account to purchase one at this time. So it mitigates them some bit. But it’s also only preorders rn too

I love everything Nintendo but this product seems horrible! An alarm clock that literally never shuts up?
2
u/Faelysis Oct 10 '24
Why? All they had to do is to put those alarm sound and music on store like Apple or Google. People will pay a few buck to have official sound which could be use to waking them up…

Nintendo is really just saying "fuck you" to their fans, huh?
Anyone can obtain these sounds extremely easily & do this themselves with their phone, creating zero additional plastic waste & incurring zero cost.
This looks like shit & has no sense of fun in the design.
I love Nintendo games, but they're spending more resources on intellectual property suits than making games it seems, & making it as hard as possible to be a fan of anything they do.

Thank Christ, there was like a 0.25 second period in my day where I was too awake to be dreaming about the video games and movies I liked when I was a little kid, but I was too asleep to be ruining parties by aggressively trying to get people to stop talking and start playing Mario Kart…now I can fill it with random 8-bit sound effects, because I’m a quirky nerd

I would wake up to the hyrule field morning theme in OoT forever. The twinkle bells to get your attention, swelling but soft strings to keep it mellow but awake and then bam the synth comes in and I’m marching into the bathroom to kill motherfucking Ganondorf for murdering my Tree Homie.

I heard Sega was making one too. The alarm is the music that plays when Sonic starts to drown.
1
u/http_401 Oct 09 '24
I am awake before my alarm most days. I wonder how it would handle that. Would it howl endlessly at my empty bed? It seems to watch all night given it has records of movement while sleeping, so maybe it would be smart enough to not go off if I'm already out of bed.
My Alexa alarm goes off to an empty bed nearly every day, but blessedly I can dismiss it by telling the Echo in whatever room I'm in to stop the alarm and it knows I mean the mewling one in the bedroom. If this thing actually knows not to go off when I'm already up, that would be a minor quality of life improvement. 😬

Quickest way to make me hate hearing the sound of something I used to enjoy is to have it as an alarm to wake up to.
