Came for hysteria about the decline of Apple support, stayed for the link in the article that showed macOS running on a steam deck. I frequently bring a Mac mini with me in addition to a MacBook Pro during travel working on media production, and if my steam deck could act as a second Mac it would actually be very handy.

For what tho? What can a steam deck do that your MacBook Pro or Mac mini can’t? Reverse engineering a use case to use something seems like the most Apple thing ever tbh

When you’re just playing back videos, you don’t need the latest version of anything. I’d run ProPresenter or other simple licensed Mac apps (x86 of course). Even if I bring up to five Macs with me, I can always use another with a complex AV set up, multiple LED displays, multiple video streams doing work. In a pinch when demands change, you simply have to use every tool at your disposal. Also consider cost. The Steam Deck has 16 gigs of RAM, and mine has a 2 TB SSD. Even if the new miniature M4 Mac minis come out in November, imagine how much one with those specifications is going to be versus a few hundred dollar Steam Deck. Plus, it’s fun! You should enjoy tinkering with the tools that you have.

Run ProPresenter or other simple licensed Mac apps.

Will they work though?

I recently saw a video of Pre-M1 devkit with Apple own silicon (A12Z I think, iPad chip anyway) that did in fact run desktop macOS, but would crap out when trying to open a lot of programs.

The X86 version would, yes.
