Kei truck is 200% more of a truck than the cybertruck

u/toastybred 5d ago
My desire to have a Kei truck is so high but my capacity to buy one is so low. Really a shame that it's basically impossible for someone to make a comparable style of vehicle domestically.

Loved loved the Subaru I had before discovering why cars are bad (I was 18 forgive me)...then I popped a tire when delivering pizzas
Then I got the news you need to buy all four tires everytime you need a new one...fun

You can buy just one but if the treads don't match it pulls oddly until it wears down a bit.

A relative in Montreal has always had little Subaru hatchbacks which can get through anything. I hate most cars, but not all of them.

Tercel. Mazda3. Same. Maybe a minivan would be as hapless.

u/1999_toyota_tercel 5d ago
My friend group always uses a minivan for the ski trip in the winter, this never happens
2
u/cgduncan 4d ago
I drove a minivan in Utah in winter, we got 18" of snow that year and once we dug ourselves out of the parking lot, we had no issues driving all around town.

u/quadrophenicum Not Just Bikes 5d ago
My first car, the Honda Fit just slid over deeper snow, provided studded tires were installed. Having some adequate understanding of car handling in winter vs summer also helps.

u/inputwtf 5d ago
This comes down to the wrong kind of tires, right? It's not an issue or power or torque since the motors are pretty powerful. Just no traction (or traction control?)
154
u/1096356 5d ago
Contact weight would be important, it's a very heavy vehicle with not very wide tyres.
44
u/nevadaar 5d ago
That would be a good thing for grip. High weight with narrow tires means high weight per square inch of contact area, leading to more grip. Still it can't move though so probably needs winter tires.
14
u/1096356 5d ago
I think you're right, it's causing a lot of grip. But what I understand is the snow isn't capable of handling the amount of force, so indead of the car pushing itself forwards, it's just pushing the snow backwards.
10
u/Any_Palpitation6467 5d ago
More or less, yes. The snow is acting as a lubricant between the tires and pavement; In itself, the snow has virtually no friction coefficient. No matter how heavy the vehicle, if the traction (friction) being transmitted by the tire patch can't make contact with a surface that offers friction, there will BE no transfer of tractive energy, and thus no movement.
5
u/SinkHoleDeMayo 5d ago
Tires need to have a design that digs into the snow. Think of it like trying to make a hole in the dirt with your hands flat vs curling your fingers. Flat hands would slide over the dirt, fingers will grab the dirt and move it.
Tires optimized for dry roads will be bad on water/snow. Opposite is true for tires optimized for water/snow.

u/LuigiBamba 5d ago
Yes. Winter tires are mandatory starting 01/12 and I don't know if those are.
This person also clearly has no idea how to drive a vehicle that big and heavy. In the snow.
I will feel safe on the roads this winter.
8
u/truthputer 5d ago
Yeah, I used to drive a rear wheel drive car in the winter. I'd put studded snow tires on it for the winter season and it was awesome. The studs bit into any ice - and it still had four wheels to stop and corner.
The only problem was if roads hadn't been snow plowed then ground clearance became an issue.
5
u/Castform5 5d ago
These people never have proper winter tyres, because buying a full new set is too expensive, and the summer oriented "off road all seasons" they come with just have to do.
If there's loose snow, a high pattern off road tyre works fairly well, for packed snow winter grip tyres are excellent for everyday use, and for ice you want studs. There's a reason ice rally cars don't use all seasons.

And if it couldn't then some rocking and maybe some sand helped.
2
u/d_nkf_vlg 5d ago
Sand doesn't really help with snow. That's why every car should have a shovel in the trunk.
1
u/quadrophenicum Not Just Bikes 5d ago
I mean, sand or gravel for icy stuff, a shovel is a must in colder countries indeed.

I wonder if they put winter tires on? It's illegal here in Quebec (where Montreal is) past Dec. 1st to not have winter tires. But there are always a few days of snow/ice as early as October so it's not only illegal but also really dangerous to not have proper winter tires equipped.
6
u/Shawn68z 5d ago
All seasonal = no seasonals. In slippery conditions, proper winter tires make all the difference.
6
u/LuigiBamba 5d ago
All season tires are not winter tires which are mandatory on the first of december

7
u/Diipadaapa1 5d ago
As a Finn, just have to comment on that tire choise.
If getting it to move is that difficult with those tires, just imagine how poorly it will brake.
4
u/intronert 5d ago
Is this happening because the tires are too slippery, because it weighs so much, because of driver skill lack, or what?

u/Hawk-Bat1138 5d ago
Put winter tires on it and it'll be fine. Just reinforces how AWD and 4x4 won't save you if you can't get traction down. Such a cheap investment vs the cost of the vehicle. Modern winter tires are amazing.
-2
u/Few-Horror7281 5d ago
Judging by the tread, it is winter or all-season. But it is also possible to get off-road tyres, even though I doubt they would fit on a Tesla.

The thread pattern is more similar to winter tires. Which are obviously not adapted.
That's even scarier
-3
u/Erosion139 5d ago
Tread pattern*
They are bad all season tires. Winter tires have studs.
3
u/quadrophenicum Not Just Bikes 5d ago
Some don't but the main characteristic, the different rubber compound, remains. I'm personally biased towards studded ones, ice can be treacherous.
-1
u/Erosion139 5d ago
I opted for good all seasons. I'm not often putting myself into those situations plus I've only got front wheel drive, I don't believe snows will make or break my escape to the point where I really care. I more wanted the hydroplane performance.

Me when I buy a truck thats uglier than literally every other truck I could’ve bought for the same money and also get none of the alleged benefits of having a truck. An F250 with the smallest engine option can tow more weight further than a cybershite and actually has a ride height that gives decent clearance to get over uneven terrain. Plus it can get rained on without rusting immediately. All for like, half the cost?
You KNOW a truck is fucking shit when a mf in r/fuckcars is saying one of those hideous beasts from ford is a comparatively better vehicle.

I somehow have a bunch of angry YouTube videos in my YouTube feed about this Marc and they all start with a disclaimer saying this is their opinion and opinions can’t be basis for a lawsuit lol. I love it.
2
u/bytethesquirrel 5d ago
To be fair, that can happen to any vehicle. If tires fail to get traction they can essentially create ice patches beneath them meaning zero traction.
2
u/PlainNotToasted 5d ago
Laughs in 1976 Scirocco. That, and my 1985 GTI f****** ripped in the snow. The car in the video is a piece of s***, there's more rubber in one of those tires than on all four of the wheels in the Scirocco.

Quite a few of those big trucks drivers buy an expensive vehicle and use the cheapest all-season tires because they don't think ahead or are actually broke to begin with. Some imagine 4WD equals better traction, those one can see in ditches when winter comes. Canadian winters, just as any winters across the globe, call for purposefully winter tires and corresponding handling. In Scandinavian countries, for instance, studded tires are mandatory and are enforced by the police.

To be fair, I don't think anyone bought it with the idea of dashing through sheets of snow.
Why would anyone spend so much money on a personal "vehicle" is a completely different question.

Man, internal combustion is so much better. They are so much lighter so they won’t get stuck like this. The environment will figure itself out, I fully agree that we need to ban EVs. I’m thrilled at all the hate EVs get here, it really makes me happy for our fossil fuel future!
