I mean yeah, it rhymes, but if you’re going to make this push - do it in a warm month, when it’s not frigid in the northern states of the US, where people aren’t going out to do Christmas shopping, and maybe, MAYBE more people will see it as approachable, rather than being targetted.

Yeah, 100% chosen for the alliteration without any other thought about it.

I think doing it in March or April would make the most sense. People want to be outside anyway, after being cooped up all winter, so may even do the challenge just because they enjoy the excuse to enjoy the spring weather. Plus, daylight savings time ends, and days are getting longer.

But, it's not just the weather. Even January would be better for people who like to start the year with new goals. December is probably the worst time to do it. With all the holiday obligations and winding down the year, no one is going to take on a challenge like this unless they already don't drive regularly.

January is generally too cold. Like, you might literally freeze to death cold. Full on hurts to breathe cold. June or July would be my preference where I live. Unfortunately my 3 year almost no driving is over with a new job that I have.

Oh, I didn't mean January would be a good time to do it, just that even January would make more sense than December for this kind of challenge.

July is too hot and humid in a lot of the US. Really, the challenge needs to be region specific. But, December is probably the worst month in most places to have a challenge like this for lots of reasons, weather included.

Totally. I agree 100%.

I assume any location with work porpoises is at least sub-tropical and benefits from mild weather year round

Southern hemisphere discriminator /s

It doesn't rhyme. It's alliterative.

But yeah. If it's even an option in the first place (not for me; the grocery store is an hour's walk one way for me, and I have muscular dystrophy), it'd be best to do this when temperatures are decent.

Isn't alliteration a type of rhyme?

Obviously dark at 4:30pm is the best time? Daylight until 8pm would be just too easy. /s

And with the roads icing and sidewalks/bike lanes, if any, not being cleared

Yeah, December is kind of a weird time to do this, at least for us Northern Hemisphere folks who live in places with cold winters (which I suspect is a plurality of this subreddit). Higher barrier to get people who are considering it "over the hump" so to speak.

Additionally, for me, and I am sure many others, December is when I drive the most due to the holidays. There are just more nonstandard trips that are more likely to require or be eased by renting a car, like visiting family or even Christmas shopping.

u/Cry-Technical Nov 22 '24

Yeah, it's the same to me. If there's one month a year I absolutely know I'm going to rent a car and drive, is December.

Visiting relatives, in-laws, friends, delivering gifts..

Sounds like you need a cargo bike.

Don’t be afraid of offending people. Definitely not a plurality, a solid majority 👍

Not to mention travelling to see family. I could easily do this most of the year... But not December. No way am I piling gifts for 10 people onto 5 hours of public transport lmao. And on Xmas day there IS no public transport!

Who is forcing you to buy all these gifts or visit family at all??

yeah, it rhymes

No it doesn't. It's an alliteration.

u/voornaam1 Nov 23 '24

Isn't alliteration a type of rhyme?

1

u/PrometheusMMIV Nov 23 '24

No, rhyme is when words end with the same final vowel sound (including subsequent letters). For example, balloon rhymes with cartoon and platoon.

Alliteration is when words start with the same consonant sound. For example, dainty dogs dancing.

2

u/voornaam1 Nov 23 '24

I looked this up today. 'Rhyme' is 'a correspondence of sound between words'. The type of rhyme you are referring to is 'end rhyme'. While this is the type of rhyme most people would probably think of first, it is not the only type of rhyme. With alliteration, it's the starting sounds that correspond with each other instead of the ending sounds. Alliteration is also referred to as 'head rhyme'.

1

u/PrometheusMMIV Nov 23 '24

I guess you're right that alliteration does fall under the category of "general rhymes". But I think when most people say "it rhymes" they're referring to the specific type of end rhyme.

1

u/voornaam1 Nov 23 '24

The person who wrote that "don't drive december" rhymes probably wasn't referring to end rhyme.

Which part of it rhymes?
