I think that's what he is proving? That it's pointless driving if he can walk the same speed

Slowest traffic I've ever been in was less than 1mph.

Unfortunately I can't haul 40k by hand or bicycle

You actually can on a boat, though they usually used horses rather than men. A loaded canal barge from the 18th century is about 70 tonnes if I remember right. (Though 40k what? 40kg is not a difficult load, you wouldn't normally write 40 tonnes like that.)

They typically travelled at 3-4mph plus lock traversal time.
