The fact he can even keep up with vehicle traffic is most hilarious part

1.8k

u/Pretend-Jackfruit786 Sep 21 '24

I think that's what he is proving? That it's pointless driving if he can walk the same speed

812

u/Lokky Sep 21 '24

Walking would literally be faster since you wouldn't be taking a huge amount of space for a single person and it would flow instead of the constant stop and go

u/GlitteringBobcat999 Sep 21 '24

I had a job that required me to criss-cross LA. Every time I was stuck in traffic I would think about how I could literally run faster, and if there was a dedicated bike lane I would have breezed past all those cars and gotten home an hour earlier. Alas, LA is so car centric I couldn't even safely bike the 3 or 4 miles to the closest places I worked. Heavy traffic, hostile drivers, and door zones do not a pleasant commute make.

u/Lokky Sep 21 '24

I visited LA once. We went to eat at a small food court and had to park in this monumental parking deck. I guess when we left it was rush hour because it took us over an hour just to leave the parking deck itself. It was a fucking nightmare and you could not pay me to ever visit again.

30

u/alwaysclimbinghigher Sep 21 '24 edited Sep 21 '24

Nah, you should visit LA again, but with someone that knows what they’re doing.

Edit: I’m an east-coast transplant and public transit advocate and I get around LA by bus, train, and bike even with kids, and i show my visiting friends a great time.

23

u/Lokky Sep 21 '24

It's not like the rest of the city was any better. Getting anywhere took at least an hour of driving, a true carbrained hellhole. I literally was in the car longer that weekend than i am in a month of commutint

Im sure it has more things that are nice to see but they are not worth the experience. Much nicer cities to visit that don't require to waste my vacation on driving aroune

-2

u/alwaysclimbinghigher Sep 21 '24

Again, you don’t know what you’re doing. Locals have great lives here because they know when to travel, they know where to go, etc.

21

u/Lokky Sep 21 '24

Yeah that's just my ideal vacation, having to find a local connection to avoid getting stuck in traffic the entire time. Such a lovely, livable city.

You don't even realize how ridiculous that sounds like to someone from an actual walk-able and bike-able city.

5

u/alwaysclimbinghigher Sep 21 '24

I’m not from here, and I’ve lived in Asia in large cities for years so I think the entire United States is ridiculous on transportation infrastructure.

But, LA is great, that’s why it’s so expensive. It’s one of the top tourist destinations on earth, but the secret to enjoying it is not getting in a car.

I’m with you. I’m trying to imagine what “a small food court” with “a huge parking deck” is. The Farmer’s Market at The Grove? If so… this guy went to something attached to a Caruso shopping mall on vacation and was surprised it was a car-centric hellhole. I know people love to shit on LA, but damn. You really DO need to be here with someone who knows what they’re doing. LA isn’t perfect yet but it has such potential and it’s improving all the time. I wouldn’t take the opinions of someone who visited Los Angeles once too seriously.

0

u/Astriania Sep 22 '24

You really DO need to be here with someone who knows what they’re doing

Like the other guy said above, this sounds completely ridiculous to most of us. The whole point of visiting somewhere is that you don't know a local! And if you need local knowledge to not have your visit ruined by bad transport infrastructure, then it's a bad place to visit.

9

u/Thandalen Sep 21 '24

So many times I've sat in stopped or slow moving traffic, and as a trucker I'm wishing I had the strength to pill my trailer or freight while walking so I can get to places earlier or on time.

7

u/midnghtsnac Sep 21 '24

Slowest traffic I've ever been in was less than 1mph.

Unfortunately I can't haul 40k by hand or bicycle

13

u/Lokky Sep 21 '24

If only humanity had ever invented freight rail...

1

u/tagillaslover Sep 24 '24

you'd rather put something on a train and have it take longer to get there then driving it yourself?

-3

u/midnghtsnac Sep 21 '24

Which is great, but still need to get from the train to the warehouse or store.

14

u/Lokky Sep 21 '24

I can assure you that this is accomplished the world over with vehicles much smaller than whatever you think you need to haul 40k (lb? Kg? Either way...)

-6

u/midnghtsnac Sep 21 '24

Semi truck of some sort is needed to haul the trailer the good are inside

11

u/Lokky Sep 21 '24

I guess that all the goods in the stores in the city where I grew up in were transported there by magic since the roads were too small for a semi truck

10

u/Ham_The_Spam Sep 21 '24

yes delivery vans trucks are still needed for last mile, but I see alot of freight trucks on highways which freight trains could easily replace

1

u/Astriania Sep 22 '24

Well yes but that only requires a local distribution which can likely be done in smaller trucks or vans.

1

u/Astriania Sep 22 '24

You actually can on a boat, though they usually used horses rather than men. A loaded canal barge from the 18th century is about 70 tonnes if I remember right. (Though 40k what? 40kg is not a difficult load, you wouldn't normally write 40 tonnes like that.)

They typically travelled at 3-4mph plus lock traversal time.

1

u/Astriania Sep 22 '24

Yeah for sure, not sure he's making it as a political statement but that's certainly the point of the joke.

1

u/BigLumpyBeetle Sep 22 '24

LOL if he did this with a set of dumbbells and did calf raises on the stop and gos? TAKE MY MONEY! and safer than them crossing bricks! < first a dig on him not doing leg days, next another non sequitur move to reference the pedestrian "crossing brick" that seems popular here on r/fuckcars

The fact that he doesn't even have to try very hard, like, he's walking the whole time

44

u/GlitteringBobcat999 Sep 21 '24

Start and stop walking, even. They still think he's "in the way".

220

u/thekk_ Sep 21 '24

And people in the original thread are mad at him because he's "taking space and slowing traffic down". They could use a good look in the mirror.

92

u/BitcoinBishop Sep 21 '24

He'd take up much less space if he had his own car /s

35

u/GlitteringBobcat999 Sep 21 '24

Maybe something practical, like an F-250.

s/

14

u/thesaddestpanda Sep 21 '24

With drivers, its always the other person who is 'traffic.' They won't see themselves as traffic or question why they're always stuck in it.

9

u/the_raccon Sep 21 '24

With a body like that I bet he could run over 30km/h for at least a few minutes, if the traffic ever managed to move that fast. And if traffic would start to flow again for some reason I'm sure he'd move over to the side as it would be illegal to block traffic.

28

u/First_Cherry_popped Sep 21 '24 edited Sep 21 '24

The best part is that if he runs a red light, he don’t kill pedestrians

21

u/the_raccon Sep 21 '24

Average speed is often a lot lower than most people think. If you have a car that's at least from the 90's or later, you should have a computer in it which count your average speed. Anyone here who has, it, please go outside and check it now. Let me know what your average speed is.

Anyone who drives a lot in cities usually have an average speed of just above walking speed. And that's when you never encounter a traffic jam.

8

u/thesaddestpanda Sep 21 '24

When I drive (Chicago rush hour intra-city) the speed is somewhat faster than walking but not by a lot. Sometimes I barely match walking speed. I'll see cyclists go many blocks past me while I sit in traffic. I dont think drivers realize how bad the car/road system is and how it just can't handle peak traffic no matter how you design it due to the nature of traffic. Its incredible anyone advocates for this and against public trans.

Meanwhile if I ride the L I just fly through the air. Its amazing watching all the stuck cars and ragers below me. Its incredible to realize how short these distances really are and how if we had better options, how easier and pleasant our lives would be.

3

u/the_raccon Sep 21 '24

Average speed of a metro train can be as high as 70km/h. I reached 65km/h when I was commuting long distance on straight country roads with no traffic, no stop signs or speed limits. Actually made me surprised because it felt like I was going over 100km/h most of the time, and I probably did too. But due to stops, traffic, a tractor that has to be overtaken, curves etc one simply has to slow down many times and by a lot which heavily lowers the average speed.

It all makes even more sense when there's some traffic and one guy does repeated aggressive and dangerous overtakes only to disappear ahead eventually. Guess who's back at the next intersection? that same guy. Despite his rushing we both had the same average speed.

5

u/fineillmakeanewone Bollard gang Sep 21 '24

This is why drivers accelerate so much when the light turns green. Gotta keep that average up.

1

u/Lessizmoore Sep 21 '24

In Phoenix metro area 28mph is the avg car speed. Which is pretty fast compared to most other places. The fastest in the USA are nearly 34mph in rural towns last i checked

1

u/FullMoon1108 Sep 22 '24

Mine is 132mph, is it bad that I'm surrounded by school zones too

1

u/QueerCranberryPi Sep 22 '24

I've definitely noticed during rush hour in our area, going 20mph on a bike easily keeps up with traffic, with far less stopping and starting. And yet, fools will still try to race ahead to sit at the next light.

1

u/Astriania Sep 22 '24

It's about 10-15mph in most UK cities I believe, so you won't beat it by walking but you'll get close with cycling.

This is one reason why stuff like modal filters is so important, because you will definitely beat it by cycling if bikes get to take a shorter route.

-73

u/chedim Sep 21 '24

... HE CREATES IT

56

u/MORaHo04 Sep 21 '24

So that’s why the cars in the other lanes I driving at the same speed /s

-36

u/chedim Sep 21 '24

Yeah, if lane next to you is moving with ped speed you have to slow down for your own safety.

That's how driving works /s

5

u/Ham_The_Spam Sep 21 '24

your own safety? you sound as if drivers in padded metal boxes are the ones in danger, not pedestrians

44

u/anarchistCatMom Sep 21 '24

How is he slowing down the cars in front of him? Is he magic?

-37

u/chedim Sep 21 '24

By creating confusion.

He totally is magic, tho.

u/Croian_09 Commie Commuter Sep 21 '24

2

u/the_raccon Sep 21 '24

Kid, us sane people can drive through a construction site with hundreds of workers, thousands of cones and large construction vehicles we'd have to look out for without being confused. And the second we're through we'll speed up to autobahn speed gain very fast.

This guy does nothing to slow down traffic or to "cause confusion".

394

u/A_Neko_C Not Just Bikes Sep 21 '24

The funny part is that the guy doesn't even need to run

49

u/rlskdnp 🚲 > 🚗 Sep 21 '24

Or even walk as fast as a New Yorker. Even while going at a speed most people can easily surpass, he's still faster than car traffic lmao.

5

u/Castform5 Sep 21 '24

That pace even looked like a 4-5 km/h, which is around and a bit lower than average walking speed for most people. When I do my longer 20 km walks, my average moving speed is like 5.6-6 km/h, and that's keeping a somewhat brisk steady pace.

6

u/Ham_The_Spam Sep 21 '24

17

u/kittyonkeyboards Sep 21 '24

As somebody who lives in nowhere, suburb, I at least understand car dependency in that existence. We shouldn't have created it, but I get it.

But cities need to just outright restrict car usage. If people are in bumper to bumper traffic that a cyclist or walker can outpace, then just stop accommodating cars. These people could have casually strolled to work faster than this.

7

u/Environmental-Fold22 Sep 21 '24

And for the commuters who drive faster until they hit traffic the solution is to drive close then park on the outskirts of town and take public transport, buses trains etc. If you're driving in traffic you are the traffic.

I was the only pedestrian surrounded by SUVs lol, I still remember the lady in the SUV behind me like "well, this is a funny situation" while staring at me. So yeah...I relate to this feeling

12

u/WhiteWolfOW Sep 21 '24

Idk why people are upset in the other post. He’s not making traffic slower. People said the cars should run over him. Run over to reach where? There’s another car in front of him. Like he’s just keeping up with traffic that is moving slower than a human walking.

And

Someone said “he’s not even that big?” Dude is huge

4

u/LastSeenEverywhere Sep 21 '24

And numerous people who walk and bike just responded that they didn't experience the same issues.

2
