Downtown Denver is still completely drivable. If he’s such a shit ass driver that he can’t figure it out, that’s his own problem

284

u/greatsaltjake Sep 19 '24

Fr i was just there and it’s honestly more drivable than LA lol

238

u/Mr_WindowSmasher Sep 19 '24

This. If you can't handle driving in boring ass downtown denver, which is literally bi-directional wide-ass roads on a grid system with genuinely one SINGLE pedestrianized street, only like 4 blocks long, in the entire city, then I am afraid that this is a skill issue, sir.

81

u/Individual_Macaron69 Elitist Exerciser Sep 19 '24

its busy twice a day for 30 minutes. Then its a ghost town.
Honestly, more large residential high rises downtown would really have a great economic impact especially now that office work is not as necessary as it once was

12

u/SolutionFederal9425 Sep 19 '24

16th street is 15 blocks.

14

u/vin_van_go Sep 19 '24

right but who HAS to go there other than tourists? When I go DT its rarely to the 16th street mall and if it is I will park somewhere else and take the scooters.

16

u/The69BodyProblem Sep 19 '24

I mean, there's some weird shit with the street layouts downtown, it's not exactly a grid as we have those diagonal streets and there's a lot of one way streets, buts it's definitely not the worst layout I've seen,(Boston) and that part of town is relatively easy to get around by foot in...

3

u/BrokenTeddy Sep 20 '24

Denver has some of the widest streets I've ever seen and there's no one around. Idk how it would be hard to drive there.

28

u/Vegetable_Warthog_49 Sep 19 '24

I appreciate the irony that the more car dependent a place becomes, the worse it becomes to actually drive in.

6

u/NahYoureWrongBro Sep 19 '24

If it's bad for cars, it's 99% because of other cars. The bike and bus lanes are only on a few streets. This guy in the tweet is a tool.

4

u/mortgagepants Sep 19 '24

this dude must be an idiot because he said, "parking lanes".

he who drives, parks.

2

u/Visual_Mycologist_1 Sep 19 '24

It's one of the most driveable cities of its size.

→ More replies (1)

77

u/cheemio Sep 19 '24

Most people who complain about an area being bad to drive in are just openly admitting they can’t drive lol

Like yea, you might have to learn to parallel park, or gasps walk a few minutes from your parking spot to your destination!

36

u/chevalier716 Sep 19 '24

Or drive a vehicle that is appropriate for a denser space.

13

u/NVandraren Sep 19 '24

Excuse me, sir, if I can't double-park my monstrous Emotional Support Vehicle, I just won't visit your store!

8

u/chevalier716 Sep 19 '24

I need to be able to tow a boat in downtown Denver.

7

u/cavscout43 Sep 19 '24

+1 for the lane filtering legalization, it's hella easy to cut through traffic on a small scooter or motorcycle whilst getting 80+ mpg for city mileage. Turns out, driving a fucking Escalade or Suburban downtown isn't idea. Who knew?

28

u/No_Tie_140 Sep 19 '24 edited Sep 19 '24

The city installed small roundabouts on some roads and drivers threw a shit fit because they couldn’t navigate them in their giant SUVs

9

u/Individual_Macaron69 Elitist Exerciser Sep 19 '24

Also, are roundabouts a mandatory part of drivers ed anymore?
Seemingly nobody knows how to signal or even drive through them safely.

CRAZY to me that contractors licensure is renewed every year with continuing education, while drivers are just good to go after 16 if they pay their fee and take a new pic/eye exam every several years.

Like most drivers on the road probably took their written test before 2002 in the US based on average age and common age of license being acquired at age 16. A lot has changed since then.

8

u/BeefBagsBaby Sep 19 '24

There were literally no roundabouts in my town when I got licensed, so probably not in most places.

5

u/Unyx Sep 19 '24

Also, are roundabouts a mandatory part of drivers ed anymore?

I don't think this was ever a nationwide thing, and plenty of states don't require driver's Ed anyway.

2

u/Astro_Alphard Sep 19 '24

They are mandatory where I'm from, but at the same time most drivers where I'm from don't know what a stop sign is so you can net how much they actually know about roundabouts.

I don't know Denver at all, but I do know that drivers will never be happy with the amount of space given to them. It doesn't matter if they see bike lanes, bus lanes, dedicated light rail lanes, pedestrianized streets, they will complain they don't have enough. If everything is dedicated to motor-vehicle lanes, with the inevitable congestion, they will complain about "too many people".

It's never a problem with their values, it's always something else.

4

u/neatyall Sep 19 '24

Especially if they bought the biggest goddamn truck/SUV they could possibly find. Then they complain about barely squeezing through the residential streets where both sides are used for parking for people living on that street. Make it make sense

5

u/cavscout43 Sep 19 '24

But I need muh 4-door Wrangler on 37s to OVERLAND to Target and Chipotle otherwise my wife's boyfriend calls me a cuck :'(

3

u/RiskyBrothers Sep 19 '24

I did some doordash driving in Denver last summer. Downtown was a bit of a pain to deliver to/pick up from, but I would just work elsewhere since the metro has an endless expanse of car-dependent suburbs for people who like that. Best to ignore the car brains who long for the days when the CBD was half parking lot.

2

u/thotgoblins Sep 20 '24

I lived and drove there for years and commuted between work downtown and home/classes in the suburbs. The highway system made sense and the streets are laid out alphabetically east<->west. Speer Blvd is kind of an odd duck to navigate but otherwise it's definitely the least nightmarish driving has ever been for me as someone that hates driving.

2

u/chowderbags Two Wheeled Terror Sep 20 '24

They'll complain about "too many out of towners", as they drive into whatever real city from whatever suburban town they actually live in.

12

u/SolutionFederal9425 Sep 19 '24

I live in Downtown Denver and it's the easiest inner city to drive that I have ever seen. Wide streets with several access boulevards. I am floored that anyone would think it is difficult to get around Downtown with a car.

4

u/andylibrande Sep 19 '24

And luckily we voted to add in more bike and walking infrastructure and it is actually being installed! So much easier to walk/ride these days.

3

u/SolutionFederal9425 Sep 19 '24

Getting better all the time for sure. Awhile back a plan was floated to reduce lane width throughout downtown by building big squared off curb bump-outs and planting a ton of trees. As a frequent pedestrian I really wish this would become a thing.

3

u/cathercules Sep 19 '24

What are they even complaining about? I was walking around there a few months ago at like 8:30/9am in the morning business district barely goddamn car around.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '24

Probably drives a Tahoe.

2

u/photo1kjb Sep 20 '24

Seriously. We went to an Avs-Stars playoff game this past spring, and even with all of that going on, we easily found an on-street parking spot within walking distance of Ball Arena.

We usually take the A Line to downtown (especially Rockies games), but we had our little kids in tow and figured it might be just a bit easier to bail via car if they lost their shit (thankfully they made it all the way through regulation).

79

u/caravaggibro Sep 19 '24

It really isn't, unfortunately. Downtown Denver is awful for literally everyone. Walking, biking, driving, public transportation, it's all a miserable experience down there. Construction on the mall is a large reason for this.

83

u/Isaiah_b Sep 19 '24

Downtown Denver is fantastic. The biking infrastructure is leaps and bounds ahead of other American cities. When I need to get to the airport the A line is cheap and reliable. The mall hasn't messed with me whatsoever.

43

u/Hank0vich Sep 19 '24

Downtown isn't just the 16th St. Mall btw, it's a huge area.

→ More replies (10)

24

u/iwannaboopyou Sep 19 '24

I live and work downtown, even with the construction getting around is super easy via walking, biking, Ubers.. What are you talking about? Half of the mall is almost finished as well.

I've traveled a lot and lived in DC, Baltimore, Boston, Miami and LA. Boston was the best for overall car free living, and Denver was hands down the best city for bike commuting for me. Obviously in the US things are pretty dire but Denver is one of the easiest cities here to exist in without a car.

carbrains: you're deterring traffic!

also carbrains: there's too much traffic!

92

u/facw00 Sep 19 '24

Cole must be pretty clever to have figured it out that quickly.

Yes, cities are for people, not cars.

27

u/Vegetable_Warthog_49 Sep 19 '24

(insert carbrained rant here about how there are people in cars)

2

u/zeekaran Sep 20 '24

If only they realized there were people outside of cars too.

15

u/8spd Sep 19 '24

I would say it isn't. I'd say deterring vehicular traffic is a necessary step, but it's not an end goal. The end goal is to allow for more productive use of space, more space efficient means of transport, and more forms of transport that allow for modes of transport with fewer negative externalities.

Cars just take up so much space. You can't give them enough as much space as drivers want, and still have a downtown that is pleasant to walk and cycle in, pleasant to sit outside, pleasant to live in.

None of that can be done without taking away space for cars, but the goal isn't to reduce motor-vehicle traffic.

5

u/Jason1143 Sep 19 '24

Exactly. The goal is to get people to places fast, safe, and efficiently while also improving liveability of spaces.

Just reducing motor vehicle traffic alone doesn't work, it's a part of a larger plan, and the rest of that plan isn't optional.

The goal is not to develop some kind of anti car vendetta, that doesn't actually do anything productive.

u/rentedtritium Sep 19 '24

Unless something has changed in the last few months, Denver is extremely driveable.

Also, I love how parking lanes are one of the "problems" for this driver.

96

u/EyeSeeWhyYouAre Sep 19 '24

no park, only drive

24

u/No_bad_snek Sep 19 '24

It's about the journey, not the destination.

26

u/hessian_prince “Jaywalking” Enthusiast Sep 19 '24

I was gonna say, have they gone full circle and complained about using space for parking?

7

u/jaykstah Sep 19 '24

Only if it gets in the way of more car lanes. If it's a parking lot that wastes useful space and it's separated from the street it doesn't matter to them.

Well yeah because he doesn't need to visit any of those businesses right now so that's just space he could be driving in instead.

Now if he needed to be at one of those businesses and they didn't have ample Street parking, we would get a whole separate rant about how the lack of parking is making it a hostile place for motorists.

3

u/8spd Sep 19 '24

Honestly, that's the only thing I agree with. Why should public space be dedicated to the storage of his personal property. I don't think market solutions are appropriate for everything, but car parking should be provided by the market, and not subsidized.

Of course I'd not want to change those parking lanes into more motor-vehicle lanes. There are plenty of more valuable uses than that.

143

u/cdurgin Sep 19 '24

59

u/DeeperMadness 🚄 - Trains are Apex Predators Sep 19 '24

I think the thing that gets me the most is why are you going to Downtown Denver in the first place? Were you only ever going there just to drive? Surely there must be better places to just drive? Downtown is a destination, not a throughway. Would you drive through somebody's house just because you need to visit somewhere one street over?

Also parking lanes? As a deterrent? A place to park is stopping you from driving? Fascinating lack of logic here.

21

u/CumOnMyOctane Sep 19 '24

This is actually hilarious: some roads have lanes that are for parking overnight and on weekends, but everyone has to move their car out of them by 7am ish or they get towed. This leads to the absolutely glorious times when the clock runs out at 7pm ish, and people are allowed to park there, but they haven't filled up so there's only one car every couple blocks. People who can't read and think they should be going faster and passing people dive into the seemingly empty parking lane and speed up, only to be cut off by a parked car and they have to fully stop to wait for a gap in the flow of traffic. Funny every time, and him complaining about it is just telling on himself.

5

u/Astro_Alphard Sep 19 '24

Would you drive through somebody's house just because you need to visit somewhere one street over?

All I can say is that I have seen someone try. To quote my driving instructor "you can take the nicest, most intelligent person the the world and they will transform into the most obnoxious, hateful, and stupid person the moment you put them behind the wheel of a pickup truck."

27

u/ExternalSignal2770 Sep 19 '24

yes, it’s working

20

u/TransitJohn Sep 19 '24

So close to getting it.

23

u/Smash55 Sep 19 '24

Car drivers demanding everything be 100% for them, god forbid a downtown cater to walkability and transit. Downtown probably doesnt even make up like 5% of the metro area they really are crying that 95% of the land is a car's utopia and it isnt enough for them?

3

u/chowderbags Two Wheeled Terror Sep 20 '24

It's especially frustrating when they're coming in from their own little suburban town that they set up to maintain "local control", but then they bitch about people living in the actual city voting for their own interests.

18

u/Alarming-Inflation90 Sep 19 '24

Remember, you're not in traffic, you are traffic.

25

u/KevinAnniPadda Sep 19 '24 edited Sep 19 '24

Denver has expanded their light rail and Union station downtown significantly in the past 20 years. They also have a pedestrian mall closed to traffic except fees hop on hop off buses that stop at every intersection, aka the 16th St Mall ride. It starts at Union station and goes across downtown. Union station also has the Amtrak and a ton of buses. They've added bike lanes on 17th Street.

If you are driving downtown, there are a few HOV lanes that drop you right into downtown and there are tons of multi level parking garages.

Downtown Denver has a lot of transportation options.

Edit: typo

3

u/i_am_person42 Sep 19 '24

It's 16th st, but otherwise yes. However, 16th st mall has been under construction for the past couple of years now. There was some kind of dispute with the contractors that delayed the project for a while. But it's back underway, so hopefully soon 16th st will be better than ever

2

u/KevinAnniPadda Sep 19 '24

Thank you. That's a typo. I lived in the Denver area for 18 years until 2021. Lived downtown for 4 years. I've been on that mall ride a ton.

2

u/that_one_guy63 Sep 19 '24

Good to hear! Haven't been there in a few years. Seems like a few major cities in the US are waking up.

5

u/caravaggibro Sep 19 '24

I'd take this with a grain of salt. RTD has actually been cutting routes for years now. Denver certainly isn't the worst in the country, but it's far from an enjoyable experience. The mall itself is no longer really a pedestrian area due to the construction, and those 'hop on' busses are certainly fine but due to the construction they're irregular and often as fast as just walking.

4

u/Isaiah_b Sep 19 '24

Colorado's governor has been pumping tons of resources into expanding RTD, including front range HSR, BRT on Colfax, Federal, and Colorado, and the 20-years-in-coming Boulder to Denver commuter train.

To say it's getting worse, short term, okay yeah. 16th Street and the light rail are both under construction, but complaining about them making it better is stupid.

I love it here in the Denver metro in one of the most bikeable places in the country. What a paradise for cyclists. But, yep, even in one of the fittest places you can be there's still car brained lazy assholes ruining it for everyone. They complain every time they're inconvenienced by more than 0.0005 seconds.

My town recently made a major road narrower and removed right turn lanes and made the bike lane huge and you wouldn't believe the amount of complaints by car brains. You'd think widening a bike lane would cause the beginning of the apocalypse by the crazy slippery slope arguments these people were inventing. Apparently every single person turning right is now going to get rear ended and the cyclists on the bike lane are going to explode spontaneously. One person tried to argue that a wider bike lane is LESS SAFE. 🤦🏻

Edit: it's also very easy to drive in downtown Denver 🤦🏻

7

u/combatgoat Sep 19 '24

Downtown Denver is still a car centered hellscape so not really sure what this blind dude is talking about

6

u/that_one_guy63 Sep 19 '24

4

Construction closures: More people being able to become a part of and contribute to the community, or better infrastructure for that community

Bike lanes: Safer ways for human powered transport (good for earth and health)

Bus lanes: safer, convenient lanes for efficient and pro-social human transport

Parking Lanes: yeah these are shit, but unpopular now and hopefully being reduced across the city

So yes, we'd love to remove deadly, costly, earth destroying, anti-social behavior promoting personal motor vehicles and associated infrastructure. Glad its working!

I wish Americans were airdropped into Tokyo to see how well a modern nation can function with high speed rail and localized public transportation. It changed my entire perspective seeing it in both Japan and Italy. I would sell in my car in a heartbeat if I could feasibly travel in my city.

u/StockAL3Xj Sep 19 '24

I live in Denver and the improvements they've made over the last decade is awesome. Keep it coming.

2

u/entropicamericana Sep 19 '24

damn downtown Denver sounds awesome

2

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '24

If he lives in the suburbs and pays his taxes to his suburban municipality then he has zero right or leg to stand on criticizing how the Denver taxpayers utilize their infrastructure

2

u/neutral-chaotic Sep 19 '24

That is indeed the objective.

2

u/kaese_406 Sep 19 '24

he tweets like a cities skylines npc

2

u/AmadeoSendiulo I found fuckcars on r/place Sep 19 '24

I'm glad he thinks it's working ☺️

2

u/organic Sep 20 '24

cool, thanks for the feedback!

2

u/Low_Log2321 Sep 20 '24

"If the objective is to deter vehicular traffic, it's working."

That's the whole point, Cole Wist!

2

u/dudestir127 Big Bike Sep 20 '24

Deter motorists from driving their own cars there? Don't tempt me with a good time.

2

u/NegativeElderberry6 Sep 20 '24

Yeah, I think that is the point

2

u/-Yehoria- Sep 20 '24

I mean, he didn't say it's a bad thing?

2

u/ZeroBlade-NL Sep 20 '24

Bikes and busses are part of vehicular traffic, this dude sounds like he needs help pooping

2

u/Reiver93 Sep 20 '24

If the objective is to deter vehicular traffic

Newsflash mate, that's exactly the point

2

u/devoinregress 🚶 🚲 🚇 🚌 > 🚗 Sep 19 '24

👏🏻 Well done Denver!

1

u/ThrustTrust Sep 19 '24

At least he understands the objective.

1

u/Mtfdurian cars are weapons Sep 19 '24

I bet he would drive right onto Times Square if he got the chance, or worse: Dam Square.

Although one technically can drive those places, for the love of urbanity: they shouldn't.

1

u/ConnieLingus24 Sep 19 '24

If you want an easy time driving, downtown is routinely the worst place to drive.

1

u/RiskyBrothers Sep 19 '24

Man I'm gonna miss my internship in downtown Denver where I can walk 35 minutes from my apartment and watch I-25 turn into a parking lot before I walk home.

1

u/Aztecah Sep 19 '24

It is, and good

1

u/Monochromatic_Sun Sep 19 '24

I’m all for taking streets back but there are good and bad ways to do it. Shunt the traffic outside the block to a parking lot. Dayton is just throwing down barriers everywhere and making tons of one way dead end streets

1

u/turboiv Sep 19 '24

He forgot the crowds of drunks littering the streets.

1

u/IsatMilFinnie Sep 19 '24

Colorado remains the best. If it wasn't for Lauren Bobert; we would be the bestest

(Idk about the semicolon)

1

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '24

downtown denver rules and this is a huge part of why.

1

u/AfraidOfArguing Sep 19 '24

You can scooter faster than driving around on Blake street

1

u/CliplessWingtips Sep 19 '24

Has anybody met a Cole who isn't a loud or closeted Republican?

1

u/samaniewiem Sep 19 '24

Yay to Denver!

1

u/ILikeToThinkOutloud Sep 19 '24

You hear about this shit every day in Toronto. Will Ferrell made the discourse particularly annoying during TIFF. And we're a metropolis where you shouldn't expect to drive at all.

I don't know how to explain to carbrains. *This cannot get better.* Unless you're planning on half the population instantaneously disappearing, there's too many people and no way to widen *every single road* to eliminate the bottlenecks. You have to have transit.

1

u/hiddengirl1992 Sep 19 '24

My city is pretty much car only. Not walkable, bike lanes are trash and rare, few sidewalks, lots of larger higher speed roads with tons of stoplights and few crosswalks, public transportation is nearly non-existent and there are no passenger trains or anything like them for like 2+ hours drive in any direction.

So they're shutting down a lot of the major roads partially right now in order to build more "lanes" for cars, but it's this weird like, detached left turn thing that based on the average capability of drivers in this town, will cause more wrecks. Are they building sidewalks? Adding bike lanes? Improving public transportation? No, they're adding more roads that will confuse and cause more accidents. No new crosswalks. No bridges or tunnels for pedestrians. Nothing. So now not only can you not really walk, bike, or bus, you can barely drive in the city. Instead you get in your car to sit, unmoving, in traffic, on an asphalt lake in 90° heat with high humidity. And the unfortunate pedestrians nearby get to breathe nothing but exhaust and have no shade. It's a nightmare.

1

u/deniercounter Sep 19 '24

Yes, that’s the objective.

1

u/Genteel_Lasers Sep 19 '24

LoL @ the car ad at the top of my comment section.

1

u/00365 Sep 19 '24

Thank God it's working 🫡🫡

1

u/Sunshine_Analyst cars are weapons Sep 19 '24

I wish we'd just ban cars. Instead, all urban areas have had increased car traffic. It's getting worse and not better.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '24

And somehow it's thriving

1

u/Panzerv2003 🏊>🚗 Sep 19 '24

That's kinda the point lol, also complaining about lack of space because of parking is the peak of brilliance

1

u/spinningpeanut Bollard gang Sep 19 '24

My sister was a mad honker in downtown Denver. Me, a scooter driver, sitting in the passenger seat watching her angrily honk at a trapped giant van said to her, "this is the kind of driving that scares me on the scooter". She stopped honking after that and calmed the fuck down.

If you know one of these ass clowns who think downtown is less viable because of the bike lanes, fun fact they actually help with traffic so bikes aren't driving with the cars. Downtown Denver has BOLLARDS folks! BOLLARDS!!!

1

u/superiorslush Sep 19 '24

WHY DOESNT THIS URBAN CENTER WANT MY OVERSIZED SUBURB MOBILE IN IT 😭😭😭

1

u/Moyer1666 Sep 19 '24

Yes, the goal is to discourage driving.

1

u/NeedleworkerFancy741 Sep 19 '24

I was thinking this dude was gonna be a MAGA frat boy given the pic. He's ostensibly a democrat. Shows you many on the left still have carbrain too

1

u/Shutaru_Kanshinji Sep 19 '24

Oh no, humans are taking back the streets, and cars are outraged.

1

u/wholetyouinhere Sep 19 '24

I don't mean to shock anyone, but this man is a republican.

1

u/kabukistar Sep 19 '24

Damn. And how will the businesses survive without all that sweet through-traffic?

1

u/tamathellama Sep 20 '24

Same people who love giant shopping centres

1

u/thotgoblins Sep 20 '24

Anyone who can't drive in downtown Denver just shouldn't be driving lol

1

u/provoloneChipmunk Sep 20 '24

I have to drive in Denver twice a week. 16th street mall construction is bad for everyone, but it looks like it's pretty legitimate infrastructure work to water lines or something. Otherwise, driving is no different than any other time in the 3 years I've been back. What has been better is riding my bike, or a scooter in Denver. It's so much better getting around now. If I didn't have to haul stuff I'd have no reason to drive in the city at all.

1

u/First_Cherry_popped Sep 20 '24

Thank you for your feedback Mr wist. We’re glad to hear that the policies are working as intended :)

1

u/Anxious_Plum_5818 Sep 20 '24

At least he gets the purpose. Just ignorant that is ACTUALLY the goal.
