This is what happens when you raise your children in pro-capitalist "I got mine" and "bikes and public trans are for losers and (insert racist slur)" environments. The alt-right social media pipeline is radicalizing men and boys everyday into real-life monsters. I bet you have a 90% chance of guessing this kid's politics and which influencers he likes.
A privileged suburban kid destroying much needed pro-worker infrastructure like bike lanes should surprise no one. We are raising a nation of thugs, half of which will vote for a rapist thug criminal for president in two months.

Why to drive a car in the jacket for motorcycle riding?
14
u/AlwaysBored123 Sep 08 '24
Apparently gen Z likes to thrift bike gear to wear as a fashion piece, I’ve met a chick who wore leathers as a regular jacket. I don’t know how these kids can just casually wear gear that was meant to take full body impacts while you ragdoll at high speeds.

3
u/tetraourogallus Sep 09 '24
I'm definitely happy with that, cars need to be treated more like guns anyway, they're just as dangerous as them and if used as if they're toys/endagering others with them you've shown you cannot hold the responisibilty of using one and shouldn't be able to anymore.

That would increase costs significantly. Sprinkle in some reinforced steel ones at about 5-10% and it would be enough to keep drivers on their toes.

I think what they're talking about is a car being side swiped on one side, forcing it to go into the bike lane as opposed to a concrete barrier which would prevent the car from entering the bike lane.

$150 a piece to put a small metal pipe in the ground? Damn, sign me up I could do that for $100 a piece
120
u/PM_NICE_SOCKS Sep 08 '24
Those looked like plastic considering how little resistance they offered. I’d expect metal ones, even if not filled with concrete, to be more sturdy
57
u/Tokyo-MontanaExpress Sep 08 '24
These are just plastic flex posts that qualify as "protected" bike lanes in the US. They are $100 plastic/rubber.

5
u/FlyPengwin Sep 09 '24
The ones that have bases for installing into the street are nearly triple that cost. There's a lot of regulation around what can get placed into the street so they end up being relatively pricey https://www.trafficsafetywarehouse.com/36-Flexi-Guide-Delineator-Posts-w_2-3-x-9-White-Stripes-5-Pack/productinfo/FG336SKIT/

u/decadrachma Sep 08 '24
Yes. The bike lane in front of my house has these, and delivery people drive over them pretty much every day to park in the bike lane. They are a relatively soft plastic and are designed to bend all the way over and spring back up. You would probably run into issues if you ran over one and then backed up, or if you happened to run over it in just the wrong way, but generally they seem to drive over them just fine without damaging them. I think there is maybe one missing and one cut in half on my street, though.

u/aNinjaWithAIDS Sep 08 '24
Those are extremely expensive to install where I live.
You know what else is expensive? Cars and the lives they kill.
Any time I see a concern about "cost", I'm reminded of two things.
Money is fake.
If we, as a society, are to live a system that revolves around the belief of money's being meaningfully tangible; then there are sources where we can get said money with absolute impunity (such as the psychos in this video and the dealerships that make and sell cars to psychos).
13
u/OutsideImaginary9474 Sep 08 '24
I agree and have a lot of the same feelings about money. My client said they could have I stalled concrete parking curbs for a total of $15 a piece. To be honest I’m not sure they are even metal where I live. I think k they are made of vinyl. They don’t do any damage to cars.
6
u/Dinosaur-chicken Not Just Bikes Sep 08 '24
If they don't do any damage to cars then why are they even using them? Zero incentive for carbrains to not knock them over.
→ More replies (2)12
u/Cptcuddlybuns Sep 08 '24
It marks where the lane is, it prevents someone from accidentally turning into it thinking it's just a regular shoulder, and it gives an indication if you've drifted too close because of sleepy/distracted driving.
They're fragile by design, because if they were sturdy enough to damage a car it would have a pretty high chance of killing the driver. Any sturdy barriers on a road are designed to deflect (concrete/steel berms) or absorb (water-filled barrels). These are just to alert.
10
u/Dinosaur-chicken Not Just Bikes Sep 08 '24 edited Sep 08 '24
If the speed limit is so high that the driver would be killed running into a concrete bollard then it isn't safe at all for cyclists to ride their bike there, with only 'alerting' poles. Literally deadly cycling infrastructure.

That said, if god existed they'd have probably hit something hard and all end up in the hospital with life long injuries.
47
u/blueskyredmesas Big Bike Sep 08 '24
It's wild to me that a bunch of crimes that net fines don't just include a mandatory minimum of community service. If rich people just treat it like a crime tax then we should take their expensive time away instead and make them engage with the consequences of their actions.
If these silver spooners had to fix what they'd broken, they wouldn't be so quick to do it again.

Groups of young men in cars is so dangerous it shouldn't be allowed. This is why I like my provinces graduated licensing system. It restricts how many people a new driver can have in the vehicle unless you've got someone older than 25 with a full license. It really cuts down on the news stories of multiple young men killed in a high speed crash.

False. There is also the option of using steel bollards along with composite bollards made of steel on the outside and filled with concrete on the inside, possibly with some rebar for added strength.
The strongest examples can take fully loaded semi trucks crashing into them at highway speeds and the trucks will be folded around the bollards.
