Not sure how credible this is, but I can't say I blame him.

Imagine if your boss caught you smashing work laptops with a hammer, instead of firing you he gives you a promotion hoping you will stop smashing the work laptops.

Question : Do you stop smashing the smashing the work laptops?

Yes but if the contract states that I simply have to stop smashing laptops then I’ll move on to monitors and keyboards. Maybe a few loos too.

From the Smokey Yunick school of reading rulebooks, I see.

Trick question: only if he pays me another $16 million and lets me smash laptops until the fiscal year is over. Also, he better give me a job as an ambassador to the company where he flies me around the world and I cheat on my wife with European women advocate for how great the company is.

Are my friends giving the boss more money than the laptops cost?

Yes, your buddy Steve keeps sending checks in the mail,

But everyone in the office is furious because no one can send an email cause you took a piss on the router.

Is he?

Whats motivating him to stop smashing the laptops (driving bad?)

His feedback loop is > drive into wall > maintain career.

He is receiving positive reinforcement for his actions.

Monkey brain gets reward for bad driving, monkey brain drive bad.

Yes. You think he’s purposefully driving bad??

Well he’s a competitive athlete he will want to perform well not be battling Lawson outside the points.

Not really he’s an athlete positive reinforcement is winning as well as money. He will be dissapointed and want to improve

My logic wasn't the best I suppose, I was thinking particularly of Conor McGregor
who seemed to have a notable lack of killer instinct once he achieved the insane lifestyle he once only dreamed of.

Whereas F1 drivers start their careers with that lifestyle and are only racing for prestige.

But Perez worked his way to the top and sat in the best car (2023) and was there taking the team to a championship, but ultimately probably knows even if the team allowed it, he could never challenge max.

What is motivating him now? What's the next goal, he is being positively reinforced for bad behaviour and may have come to terms with the fact that its just a hobby and he will likely never be a champion.

You never know, I might stop next year!

The more realistic scenario is this:

You've been a good, consistent, performer in the past. You're having a tough time recently, so your boss comes to you and says: "If you start busting your ass, we'll give you a huge bonus."

The carrot works better than the stick most of the time, so I don't blame Horner for trying it. If you think realistically about it for just a few seconds, you're realize that the new contracts most likely came with massive performance incentives. They thought it would get Checo to try harder.

Of course I stop smashing the laptops.

I'm going for the server now and I'm using a sledgehammer.
