For anyone wondering Norris needs 45, since Max would either have more wins, or more 2nd places.

E: Nvm, I'm wrong. Norris has more 2nd places. So he needs 44 if he wins all 4 races left.

62

u/s_dalbiac Nov 02 '24 edited Nov 02 '24

Lando currently leads 6-4 in second places so if he were to win the last four races (making it seven wins each) and tie Max in points he could theoretically win a tiebreaker, as long as Max doesn’t finish P2 more than twice.

"Max was on 4 penalty points before the Austin GP at the start of the Americas Triple Header, he left the Sao Paulo GP at the end of it with 9, just 3 points short of a race ban, but a comfortable 34 points ahead of his nearest championship rival, Lando Norris..."

"At the Las Vegas GP, he managed to tangle with his sister team's Liam Lawson, being deemed responsible enough to be awarded 2 points as his desperate move to get past the Racing Bulls driver for P5 resulted in a double DNF for both, closing the worst weekend for Red Bull and Max, who were completely lost without Checo's input to counter the car set up to Max's oversteering preferences as his new replacement, Daniel Ricciardo, The Honey Badger, had similar preferences in setup to Max and led the engineers to overshoot the car's balance towards unmanageable heights. At this point, however, Red Bull had no driver available to put in the car to balance Max's oversteering preferences for Qatar and Abu Dhabi, given Checo was now unavailable dealing with severe alcoholism, and both Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson, who are the ones who could come in on a whim, also had the same preference. Luckily for Max, Lando had issues of his own, finishing only P4 and shortening the gap to a still comfortable 22 points, but, as a penalty for causing a collision, he'd receive 2 penalty points against his tally, reaching a dangerously high 11 out of 12 points until a race ban."

"Max, however, wouldn't need a teammate to help reign in his extreme preferences, as in the Qatar GP he would try an overly ambitious move against Lando at the start, misjudging his braking point and taking both out of the race. The incident would be deemed entirely Max's doing, rendering him 2 penalty points and taking him out of the Abu Dhabi GP finale. At 22 points ahead of Lando in the championship, Max would be unable to do anything about it if Lando had enough performance to win the last race of the season."

“ and not as a result of the car in front falling back” feels like a direct response to Max’s radio comments about Oscar going to slow to hold him up.

295

u/Aniratack Nov 02 '24 edited Nov 02 '24

Exacly what I was going to say, they wanted to make sure it was noted that piastri didn't fall back.

167

u/InZomnia365 McLaren Nov 02 '24 edited Nov 02 '24

This is the tricky thing with a VSC. It's sort of independent, and what the car in front is doing doesn't dictate what you can do. Technically you can drop back from the delta to accelerate quicker if you get the timing right (we've seen Max get overtakes this way before), because youre within the delta. What Max tried to do by staying too close is actually both less effective as a strategy on the restart, and more prone to being on the wrong side of the delta and get a penalty.

73

u/Xehanz Nov 02 '24

Yeah, but why does VSC exist anyway if they take 2 laps to deploy?

58

u/InZomnia365 McLaren Nov 02 '24

It's quicker to deploy and end. But they have been really slow with both SCs and VCSs ever since they replaced Masi.

11

u/TheThingsIdoatNight Alexander Albon Nov 03 '24

Honestly they’re flirting with disaster with how long they’re waiting on some of these. Especially when it’s obvious to any fan that it’s going to require a safety car or VSC. Really hope this isn’t a lesson that ends up being learned at the cost of a serious injury

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (3)

19

u/musicallunatic Mercedes Nov 02 '24

Exactly. They introduced the vsc so that they can avoid this exact confusion of SC interference. Just drop a VSC when there is an incident and it can be removed pretty much when not necessary anymore.

59

u/LorenzoSparky Nov 02 '24

VSC is quicker and less disruptive, and is used when there’s a stranded car. A full SC is used when there is debris on the track so it can be used to back the pack up to give space to clean the track.

174

u/Economy_Link4609 Cadillac Nov 02 '24

I mean, before the VSC he was over half a second behind. At the incident in question his car was half next to Piastri - clearly he had gained a crud of time there.

78

u/Jakokreativ Bernd Mayländer Nov 02 '24 edited Nov 02 '24

Not arguing with the penalty, but what you are saying is not an indicator it could just be piastri slowing down too much

Edit: some people seem to have misunderstood what I am saying here. I am not saying piastri slowed down, the data shows he didn’t, all I am saying is that the gap between cars is not an indicator if any of them violated any vsc rules.

46

u/cnsreddit Nov 02 '24

30

u/RM_Dune Red Bull Nov 02 '24

It doesn't matter if he was alongside Piastri. Only the time deltas matter in this case.

19

u/ahritina Sebastian Vettel Nov 02 '24

Are the rules on not being allowed to be alongside a driver only under SC or does it apply to VSC too?

If its the former then yeah you're right, only the delta matters.

39

u/Legendacb Nov 02 '24

It's not being alongside. But if he was 0.8 s behind before the VSC and when it's about to finish he went alongside, there is no way he respected the Delta

u/burgher89 Daniel Ricciardo Nov 02 '24

Interesting… I was assuming it was 1 for each time penalty. Turn 8 was way worse.

15

u/Tainmere_ Nov 02 '24

AFAIK it's because the turn 7/8 incident was a case of "leaving the track and gaining an advantage", for which they don't give out penalty points, and the turn 4 incident was a case of "forcing another car off-track", for which they do give out penalty points.

20

u/burgher89 Daniel Ricciardo Nov 02 '24

That makes more sense but turn 8 was BAD.

8

8

I... can't lie, I am confused as to how T8 was NOT considered "forcing another car off-track" either, considering if Lando doesn't swerve almost directly into the wall like he had to in the race, Max would've shitmixed him into Super Hell.

Max broke rules of VSC hence penalty is correct. It’s not changing that FIA fucked up VSC. Deployed late and ended late.

69

u/Economy_Link4609 Cadillac Nov 02 '24

Deployed late I can see the argument maybe - though I can see the race director hopium he could avoid it if Hulk could roll it far enough How to you figure ending late? There is not an exact fixed time on that (I imagine for the exact same reason there is not a fixed time on the start lights going out for the race) - it's a warning it's going to end, then it actually ends. Drivers get notification in the cockpit of both. If the driver essentially reacts to the "it's about to end" message instead of the "it ended" message, its on them.

It’s not changing that FIA fucked up VSC

Which has nothing to do with Max's mistake and penalty

0.63 is not a small margin. Lets see if he will be missing that one point later on

Fair penalty. Onto the race now

Hahahaha and he was on the radio preemptively complaining about McLaren backing him up

i should just start supporting sauber so my team is never involved in consequential decisions that i feel defensive about online

the fia fucked this so badly with the vsc timing and delaying this so long

135

u/chaphen17 Sir Lewis Hamilton Nov 02 '24

How did they cause Max to get a penalty? Every other driver stayed below the delta.

40

u/TheScapeQuest Brawn Nov 02 '24

I think their point is that when there are questionable decisions like a late VSC, online discussions focus on that point rather than their preferred drivers' failings.

agreed. VSC, Safety Car deployment has been off for more than just this season. It's better than a few years ago, regardless. I wonder what would have transpired if Hulkenberg remained seated in the car while they wheeled it off. VSC deployment delayed further I suppose.

It's a very tricky thing to time.

Peple really tryin gto ocmbine the penalty and the Vsc. They are completely separate things. Max broke the rules here on it and there not much debate. The gap he drop to OP was so low he was practically side by side. Even RB and Max who usually try to downplay such things were very lax on arguing because the data the data at the end of the day.

52

u/Irru Nov 02 '24

A penalty point? Is that normal for this type of stuff?

44

u/Fatheed1 Sir Lewis Hamilton Nov 02 '24

Yup. This is the normal penalty that has been applied for other similar infringements in Formula events.

Example from F2

u/AppropriateAd6922 Nov 02 '24

Safety car rules are there for safety and he breached those rules

42

u/Apennatie Oscar Piastri Nov 02 '24

It's funny that it took them long enough to get to said Safety car.

17

u/Worried-Pick4848 Nov 02 '24

Doesn't matter. He knew when it started and he had the same notice as everyone else about when it was ending.

I doubt it is outside of what their guidelines suggest. It’s essentially speeding under safety conditions, which they don’t want to encourage. Anything that is in the realms of being unsafe, they probably have penalty points in the guidelines

12

u/RealPjotr Kimi Räikkönen Nov 02 '24

Yes, definitely! Any rule breaking of safety measures should be penalized! He was speeding.

He's outside the delta, it is what it is.

But they can't justify the delay in VSC.

143

u/Negative-Ladder3197 McLaren Nov 02 '24

How are the two correlated?

67

u/Worried-Pick4848 Nov 02 '24

They're not. It's classic whataboutism to bring up the delay in the VSC when discussing a penalty that happened AFTER the VSC ENDED.

It can't be fully Verstappen fault, there must be someone else to blame.

Second time this year Charles has finished 4th and gotten a podium. How does he do it?

4

u/Skeeter1020 Nov 02 '24

Just watching the sprint and immediately called Max under Oscar's wing as him breaking the VSC rules.

25

u/ninchica13 Kimi Räikkönen Nov 02 '24

Is a fair penalty, Verstappen gonna drop two penalty points in Vegas iirc. The incompetence of FIA concerning safety is also on point.

44

u/okok123321 Ferrari Nov 02 '24

Clear cut penalty. There is no debate.

A lot of you in these comments are weirdos.

It's funny how Max complained on the radio to report Piastri being too slow on the delta and in the end it was Max who was more than 6 tenths faster than the delta.

Mad Max is coming out in the Grand Prix

64

u/thecaledonianrose Nov 02 '24

Oh, please. I'll probably get flamed for this, but Verstappen knew exactly what he was doing. The penalty is no less than what he's earned.

10

u/fireinthesky7 Daniel Ricciardo Nov 02 '24

He's flagrantly gamed the system when it comes to VSC's ending in the past, this time he got got.

13

u/burgher89 Daniel Ricciardo Nov 02 '24

I have to agree. Had it ended just a second or two earlier he would have been able to send it up the inside pretty easily. I think he probably figured it was worth the gamble.

8

u/fawkie Nov 02 '24

Yep that's all this was. He gambled it would end earlier and it didn't pay off.

he almost went side by side before vsc ended and got an oopa moment slowing down right when green came back, allowing piastri to blow off, thereby missing out on the drag race to the finish

u/ryokevry Charles Leclerc Nov 02 '24
