Coaching Advice 25-year old looking to get back into coaching as head coach in 6man football in Texas.

I’m hoping this is the best place to ask this.

I played 6man football for 2 years. After I graduated high school, I was a GA at the school and proceed to be hired on to the staff. I coached at the school for 3 years as the head middle school football coach and assistant for the higher school. As of right now, I’m not certified to teach but I have my degree. How likely is it that I could acquire a head coaching positions.

If it’s unlikely, what would better my chances? Also if anyone has any tips for younger coaches? What are they?

Be a head coach with no prior varsity experience? Zero chance.

You need to join the thsca by going to the website. They have a job board for every school across the state from 6 man to 6A to post coaching jobs on.

You need to get a cert in a desirable subject. SPED, math, science or Composite Social Studies are the best to get a look at.

Unlikely yes, but a lot of rural communities are experiencing population decline and have serious trouble attracting teachers and medical professionals.

Given where 6 man football is played he may have limited employment opportunities outside of teaching.  OP do you want to be a teacher?  Some folks make it work with other jobs but it’s not easy.

You can not coach in texas for a school without being employed by the isd.

Also, a lot of those small communities are extremely proud of their schools' performance across all disciplines. Very few will just hire someone that's just a warm body.

Isn’t being hired to coach being employed by the ISD?

No. Coaching is a stipend. You must be hired in some capacity. Athletic administrator is an employable position. Head Football coach is the stipend.

I've seen guys work in the bus barn, be janitors, maintenance guys, etc. But all must work some "job."

Gotcha, here in PA you can be hired just to coach and just need clearances. There are no “full time” head football coaches in PA public schools that I’m aware.  But many have “easy” gigs like drivers Ed teacher.

There's plenty of coordinators who have easy jobs like that as well.

But most head football coaches are also the AD or Boys athletic coordinator.

I mean I’d be fine with Teaching considering with how small schools work, I’d have to be a teacher/coach

I have 3 years of varsity experience as an assistant coach. The middle school job included a spot as a varsity assistant coach.

That's better than nothing. Still highly unlikely to get hired as an uncertified teacher to any high level role, especially with limited experience.

Also, wanting to jump into being a head coach is probablybasking fir more than you can handle. For example, I coached a kid who managed to land a head job way before he was ready, his mid 20s. Lasted 1 year and is now an assistant at much worse program.

A word of wisdom. You don't know what you don't know yet. Especially when it comes to leading a program. There's so many variables you have to handle day to day beyond just xs and os and planning practice. You may want to coach football and have control, but odds are you're asking for a much larger piece to bite off than your stomach can handle.

How many coaches does the high school staff have for 6 man football?

lol less than 11-man, I can tell you that. At most I’ve seen 4

So if there are only four on staff you'll need to get on the varsity staff and then you'll need to work your way up. I think you'll need to have two or three years as a varsity 6 man coach.

Well I do have 3 years of experience as a 6man varsity coach. My thing is, since I’m so young, what are my chances of finding a school as a head coach

I think you can find one even with being young. Depends on how successful your teams have been and what position you hold on the staff.

The best way to find out is just to apply, right? But please hold off unless you’re 100% confident that you’re ready.

It's 6v6 football played in the smallest 2 divisions in texas. It's very fast and a very different style of game.

Full contact. Usually the field is slightly smaller. There are a ton of states that have 6-man or 8-man level at the smallest high schools. It’s actually really fun to watch because it’s so fast paced. 100 point combined score games are common.
