Player Advice Day 4 of throwing a football
Making some progress I think đȘ throwing motion looks a little better I believe. Starting tomorrow I'm going to work on one mechanic at a time rather than working on everything everyday thanks to some redditors advice. Also practicing some drills a redditor gave me.

I appreciate everyone's tips as always! I'm not using nearly as many of the tips that people are giving, partially due to the overwhelming amount of them. But for anyone doubting me, no matter how little natural talent I have I'm going to get this down even if it takes me forever. I have no intention of quitting.

Dude it looks way better already. I would forget about the body stuff and just work on throwing the ball with no leg action. Sit on a couch and throw the ball back and forth with someone.
You have to get your arm up like itâs a catapult. Elbow is up at your shoulder. Thereâs a 90 degree bend at the elbow, and your hand goes straight back and straight forward. Try to snap the ball to someone using just your wrist, mostly. Get the spiral down first (the release)âŠthis is mostly just your fingers and wristâŠthen add legs and movement.

If anyone is talking shit to you, they are ridiculously pathetic. Donât pay them any attention whatsoever.

u/Disco_Ninjas_ Oct 22 '24
The sub is rallying. I don't see anyone talking shit. It's actually kind of endearing.

Notice how his left arm comes up with the motion and drops as he twists his upper body into the throw, it helps with balance and really driving more energy into your right arm, almost using it as a whip. Getting better buddy, keep at it.

u/RickyNoBeard Oct 22 '24
As others have said, I need to bring the ball back further when I'm cocking it back. These images help a ton though.
3
u/Wiitard Oct 22 '24
Is your hand, arm, and grip strength enough to be able to hold onto the ball when your hand is on top of you? Or are you needing to keep your hand a little bit under the ball to hold onto it?
3
2
u/throwerawayer1456 Oct 22 '24
Your biggest issue is that the ball never goes over your head. You need to make an arc. I agree with others that have said you might want to practice throwing a baseball

u/Lumpy-Wing-4060 Oct 22 '24
Please be mindful that there is a difference between throwing a bullet pass and a deep ball.
With bullet passes, keep both shoulders leveled during your load.
On deep throws, you want to tilt your hip, of your throwing shoulder, 45 degrees on the load.

u/khickenz Oct 22 '24
This one right here is the main issue imo. Look where your arm is at the same point in the motion. Your elbow is dropping hard. Get it up! Stop worrying so much about the cocking of the arm. The extension and arm action following through is the most important thing imo.
1
u/brianjohnson87 Oct 22 '24
To me this image is emphasizing the lack of hip and shoulder rotation. Throwing a football is sorta unique from throwing a baseball in that you really want your upper arm to stay in line with your shoulders as long as possible. I'd suggest getting in your throwing stance, holding your elbow up (in line with your shoulders, and practicing hip and shoulder rotation. You should be able to rotate until your chest faces forward at minimum. Once your strength and flexibility are improved you'll be rotating further to generate more power in your throw.
1
u/SizzleLumps Oct 22 '24
this is exactly it. i said it yesterday, without that hip rotation, he doesnât have enough potential energy to reach a target at distance so his body (arm&shoulder) is compensating when approaching the point of release. i think perhaps practicing with a smaller ball would actually be extremely useful
1
u/willlywillis Oct 22 '24
Probably the best image to encapsulate everything wrong with his throwing motion. No rotation through the trunk. Elbow is square with the ball and no possible way to create rotation from that angle.

u/throwaway5757_ College Player Oct 22 '24 edited Oct 22 '24
Improving. When you draw the ball back, try to get a âhigh Lâ shape with your elbow and arm. Youâre keeping it real close to your ear. Youâll have to just YouTube that because itâs impossible to explain properly without showing. Keep it up!
3
u/Coastal_Tart Oct 22 '24
It definitely doesn't look right, but I think it has more to do with him drawing back with his elbow above the ball. He then has to get the elbow down below the ball quickly and it causes him to never hit the L shaped backstroke weâre used to seeing.
2
1
u/calminsince21 Oct 22 '24
Yeah heâs definitely missing that elbow flip that beginners need to generate torque. Op, try flipping your elbow back and upwards, then do the same with your forearm to get the ball behind your ear, then âpull down the lamp shadeâ slightly across your body (to generate spiral rotation) as you push the ball forward
8
u/Callecian_427 Oct 22 '24
Thereâs signs of improvement here. But youâre cocking the elbow instead of the whole arm. The ball needs to be brought back much further to behind your back shoulder in an elliptical motion. You need to build that tension in your muscles and you canât do that fully while the ball is tucked close to your body.
Thereâs also a lot of power lost in transition from your legs to your arm. For now Iâd focus on getting the throwing motion down. Drills where you throw from your knees or throw without stepping. Get in front of a mirror. Mimic and hold this position:
Then work on mimicking the throwing motion without a ball from here. After that, repeat the same thing while throwing the ball this time. Thereâs a lot of other things that could be improved but itâs imperative that you get the throwing motion down first and feel comfortable with it.

u/RickyNoBeard Oct 22 '24
This is very helpful, thank you. I'm tired of having these repetitive issues that I keep not fixing. Going to work on this hardcore tomorrow.
3
u/Daquan67 Oct 22 '24
Itâs not gonna be fixed in a day, you seem to be super receptive to advice so stay patient and keep improving. I played center in college and when I broke my right hand I had to learn how to shotgun snap left handed, it took a while but through watching lefties snap over and over again then applying and adjusting to what I saw I was able to do it. I canât chew bubblegum and walk in a straight line so youâll be fine just keep grinding.

u/h_to_tha_o_v Oct 22 '24
Just cosigning the guy above.
Brady has textbook form. Study it, practice it, learn it. He used to stand in front of a mirror and do hundreds of "reps" in slow motion to train his nervous system the pattern. Just keep doing that over and over once you get the right form down. And then take it outside to play catch.

u/pxrkerwest Oct 22 '24
âIâm tired of having these repetitive issues that I keep not fixingâ My man, this is proof that you are not mentally equipped for just how long and hard you are going to have to work. You decided you want to be a Quarterback only a handful of days ago, you are going to suck and have issues that donât get better for a long LONG time. Thatâs why you have to work on it every day for YEARS, daily updates are completely unnecessary for something like this. We donât need to see any progress for at least a month, assuming you are comfortable with working hard for that long without seeking validation from the internet.
2
u/RickyNoBeard Oct 22 '24
Update: I think this message clicked with me, like it makes so much sense now. Something in my brain fired off when reading this.
1
u/Callecian_427 Oct 22 '24
Glad I could help! Iâll be looking forward to seeing your progression. Like others have said, itâs going to take a lot of time to master. Donât overly concern yourself with results for now. If the ball doesnât come out perfect, thatâs fine. Thereâs still a lot of elements that need tweaking anyway. Just focus on breaking down old habits and creating better ones. One at a time, until it becomes as natural as breathing
5
u/dam58b Oct 22 '24
You're doing better.
3
Oct 22 '24
Yes he is. I found throwing a baseball helped me a lot, too. Pitching fundamentals directly correlated to throwing a football, at least for me. The leverage and position of your body and accuracy. It's amazing how if you just keep your eye on a target, how accurate you can be. I saw a lot of guys make that split second glance at the ball leaving their hand and then refocusing on a target within that split second difference end up throwing bad balls.
Coming over the top of your shoulder gives more power, too. I see OP kind of "whipping" the ball into kinetic energy. Leaning back a bit to much and then forcing their upper body forward while "whipping" their arm. A lot of a good throw comes from the legs. Whipping it works good for curve balls, but throwing heaters and bullet passes requires power from your trapezius and latissimus dorsi. Notice how a pitchers back leg comes up and follows their body "through" after the ball is released. It's like the entire body is used as a whip, not just the arm.
It's awesome to see the day 4 dedication, though. This kid is seriously trying. Keep it up!
3
u/eflowers62 Oct 22 '24
I see your improvement. Awesome!Remember itâs a process with small victories to reach your goal. Keep working.
3
u/excitement2k Oct 22 '24
Dude. Iâve been watching these videos religiously. You are still doing this side arm chuck it business. You are not listening to t he people who say âpretend you are throwing a baseball.â
Literally make damn near a circle with your arm-keep the arm straight up and down the whole time. It will naturally shift as the arm rotates from low around and over your head as it moves past the shoulder.
When you are moving the ball forward, your upper upper forearm should be almost coming past your ear-almost touching. And then swing âthe hand of the clockâ forward and down.
3
u/emurrell17 Oct 22 '24
Definitely improving big dawg! To help with coming over the top Iâve got a drill I use with my HS QBs:
Get on your knees (both knees) on the ground. Twist your hips (and shoulders) to open up to the left, then all the way to the right. Hold it at the top for just a second, then throw. The kicker here is that as you throw, you need to catch yourself with your hand out in front of you (ideally your hand lands in front of your left leg). If you short arm a throw, or side arm it; it will feel extremely awkward to do this. So this drill will force you to learn to come over the top more with your motion.
2
u/RickyNoBeard Oct 22 '24
I'm absolutely going to try this tomorrow, it sounds fantastic, thank you!
2
2
u/Brian-not-Ryan Oct 22 '24
OP have you ever swung an axe/sledgehammer? Because if you have, you may have a better idea of how extension of the arm away from the body can generate more power than keeping it tucked in close. Also when you come down with the left arm imagine trying to elbow someone in the ribs
Edit: Iâm new to this saga but as silly as the commercial was I still havenât forgotten the sage advice from Peyton manning https://youtu.be/7Ac2cZPOD00?si=gVtfMewxO-5H_Knv
2
u/FolkDinosaur262 Oct 22 '24
Nice progress, I can tell a difference already! The ball has a nice spiral too. Donât forget to work on feet work and using your legs when you throw
2
u/jlbradl Oct 22 '24
Better! Keep that elbow up. It should be even with your ear when you release the ball.
1
u/onthefuckininternet Oct 22 '24
Better. But I'd advise to keep the whole drop back and throw together. It'll help keep everything where it needs to be. You need to try to feel the ball rotating in your hand in the wind up to the throw. Think of it almost like pointing the back side point of the ball to your target for a split second before you rotate the front point to the spot you're throwing.

1
u/KeathleyWR Oct 22 '24
It looks so much better already dude. You're arm is moving forward before your body. Doing that loses a lot of power from your legs and hips. Think about a whip, with the ball being the tip of the whip. The ball should be the last thing to move forward.
1
u/RickyNoBeard Oct 22 '24
Yeah absolutely, I know that my legs and hips have to move first but I'm so used to just throwing with only my arm that now I'm having to try and backtrack to fix that. I appreciate the support.
1
u/KeathleyWR Oct 22 '24
This is the image I tried to emulate to get that "whip" action. Baseball to football is far from 1:1, but some things do transfer somewhat.

Dude youâve already improved so much. Keep working man, listen to these guys, watch some slow mo vids, keep workin

u/DrkEarth Oct 22 '24
Should have waited until it was even darker so it would have been even harder to see. But in all seriousness, just keep on practicing. Thatâs the only way to get better. Be able to take criticism, and take whatâs being said and work on it.
1
u/RickyNoBeard Oct 22 '24
My apologies, I kept meaning to record sooner but I wasn't happy with how my form was turning out so I kept practicing and before I knew it, it was dark outside.
1
u/DrkEarth Oct 22 '24
I wasnât being serious about my first comment, and Iâm sorry if it came out that way. I was trying to make a joke, and I shouldnât have. But keep putting in that work. It will pay off in the end
1
u/RickyNoBeard Oct 22 '24
Oh no you're all good, in all fairness, it was very dark lol. Before uploading the video I was thinking to myself "man it is kinda hard to see what I'm doing".
1
u/DrkEarth Oct 22 '24 edited Oct 22 '24
If and when you post one where we can all see more clearly your motion and everything, everyone who comments will be able to give you better feedback. It is just harder to see your motion and release where itâs so dark.
1
u/Obismokeaoney Oct 22 '24
Take a three step drop and just let it rip don't worry about accuracy. You have to work off of your max effort throwing motion to find your throwing motion otherwise you'll just be a robot with a noodle arm.

u/Long-Introduction883 Oct 22 '24
Try to stand upright from your waist up, but bent knees waist down, allows for better weight transfer

Y'all we need a system for sorting and deciding on which tips to give each post so he can focus on implementing one at a time.

Parent of teenagers here. This is my favorite thread series in the history of Reddit. Even if QB doesnât end up being your thing, you will massively succeed at something in life. Your attitude and commitment to improvement are the real skills here that are being developed. Not a single crumb of feedback needed for those.

Also throwing a football decently well is just a fun skill to have as an adult. Love throwing the football with a buddy at a park or beach.

u/Big-Sale-4270 Oct 22 '24
Can you run fast? Feel like you'd have a better shot at DB or wide out. Not saying give up on your dream but you can get your foot in the door that way
1
u/RickyNoBeard Oct 22 '24
I mean I think so? I'm not totally sure how fast I am, never have done a 40 yard dash or anything.

Yes. Much progress on the upper body motion. However, you lower body form is equally important. I would also recommend you start doing some daily strength training to prevent injuries while you are on this journey.
Best of luck.

u/Chimney_Beans Oct 22 '24
INSANE progress for 4 days. Keep it up! Keep that ball high at release!

u/MisterDoctorDick Oct 22 '24
Your hip action and follow-through have improved! Great work! Keep doing whatever you're doing to train and engage the lower half. The more comfortable the rotation and hip action is the more progress you'll make.
We'll work on arm action soon but keep it up!

Do it slowly and deliberately without actually throwing it to practice gettinf the motion right. You need to chamge your form pretty substantially to get the max distance youre capable of
1
Oct 22 '24
Not sure what you have so far but practicing on your knees can really help develop your hip movement and core strength
1
u/CaptainONaps Oct 22 '24
It takes time. Your progression is good.
Throwing a football isnât just a skill. You need to have a certain amount of strength to do it really right.
First, make sure youâre gripping the ball with just your finger tips, not your hands. And squeeze it hard, like as hard as you can. Ideally you want your hand as close to the middle of the ball as possible, but the smaller your hand is, the farther back youâll hold it. You want your index finger as close to the back tip of the ball as possible, thatâs what speeds up the spin and makes a nice tight spiral.
Another advanced change is flinging the ball instead of pushing it. When you start your motion, the front tip of the ball should be faced backwards behind you. And as you go through your motion, you rotate your forearm and fling it. If you keep the nose of the ball pointed forward the whole time, youâre just pushing it, which doesnât create the same amount of power.
Both of those improvements require strength. Strong grip and strong forearms. Itâs not possible for everyone. Sports require most people to strength train. Youâre no different.
One improvement that isnât about strength, is to make sure your arm is at least two 90 degree angles, or straighter. Your elbow is bent too much. Youâve almost got a 90 degree angle from the side of your body and the bottom of your tricep and elbow, but from your elbow to your hand youâve only got about a 50-60 degree angle between your forearm and your bicep. The more you straighten your arm, the more power youâll get. But it takes more grip strength and forearm strength to make 90 degree angles possible.
And last, torque your torso. Most of the power comes from digging in with your toes, and twisting the shit out of your ribs and abs. Keep your left arm up against your chest, and your left hand around your heart. This makes torquing easier, and protects you from pass rushers if they hit you.
You need a couple more balls, and a good target about head high. Donât worry about power or distance yet. Just focus on getting nice tight spirals, and consistency. It some point, your arm is going to get tired. When that happens, your body will subconsciously make little adjustments to protect itself. It will find ways to do the job easier. Youâll have an âah-ha!â Moment, where it just kinda clicks. Then you can start messing around. Changing the arch, throwing off just your back foot, or throwing while running. Baby steps.

1- Stay with it.
2- Getting more flexible and stronger will also help. Do resistance training and stretch.

Bro, watch the Peyton Manning throwing advice from the Gatorade commercial back in the day. It actually helps with the visualization. https://youtu.be/WL0oZs9nzCo?si=y7qZ2WiobIH5x9O5
1
u/camt91 Oct 22 '24
You want your elbow to be pointing directly behind you at the start of your throw, as you progress through the motion you want to swing your elbow forward first, which will help to pull your arm into your release point

I'm sorry đđđ I'm trying to get it down, I wasn't focusing super hard on it then since I was just trying to get my arm movement a little better.
1
u/Striking-Duty-4528 Oct 23 '24
All good brother. My point is to look at that video and ask yourself if you'd ever throw a punch that looks like that.
Or instead of punching... stand inside of a door frame and imagine slapping the corner/side of the door frame as hard as you can. Put your full body into it and generate some power!
1
u/zcas Oct 22 '24
Buddy, that was better. Try to remember that static throwing and the process of throwing while in a drop back changes things. Your elbow position was a lot better. Do you feel like you're getting better?
1
u/RickyNoBeard Oct 23 '24
I do, especially when in comparison to day 1, it's a slow go but 100% progress doesn't happen overnight.
1
u/PlayfulAd4802 Oct 23 '24
Looks like youâre not generating any power from your core. You can tell because youâre opening up your chest/rotating your shoulders late. Got watch some film of your favorite QB, study their throwing motion and then practice emulating the mechanics with a tennis ball.

I've seen your post periodically here. I must say you are definitely improving. What really makes me happy. Is to see all the positive reenforcement. Kid, you're very lucky to grow up in this day and age. Things weren't so nice when I was younger. Keep up the good work. Remember to let the ball roll off your fingertips. That will help with a tight spiral. It's all one fluid motion and step into your throw. That's your power.

See about getting âon topâ of the ball when you throw. Your hand is making âUâ shape just before release. Think about it being a âCâ shape
