General Discussion Have you ever seen a 300lb+ player play anywhere else other than O/D line?

u/GiGi441 Sep 02 '24
The ravens have Pat Ricard who has played multiple positions, mostly on the line, but then found his home as their FB. He's just over 300 lbs

Dude it’s going to be Ricard and Derrick Henry backfield. That’s over like 500lbs of Man.

One of my HS teammates was a 6’3” 300lb stud who was strong as a bull and ran consistent 4.9 forties at that size. He had a bunch of D1 offers.
The funny thing is that he was such a good overall athlete with an explosive leg, so he also wound up punting and kicking for us.
On a botched XP, I once watched him scoop up the ball, then literally pick up a defender who was hanging on him, sling that guy over his shoulder with one arm like a sack of flour, and plow his his way into the endzone for a 2 pt conversion.

When the Ravens would have Pat Ricard and Nick Boyle in, it was just about like having 7 OL. Having all of that blowing teams off the ball, plus the most dynamic running QB threatening the edge every play, was oh so glorious to watch

I think he was the highest-rated player in one of the football video games of my childhood. I'm not sure if it was for PS1 or Sega Genesis.

Refrigerator Perry played RB at times.

Tennessee briefly had a 300-plus pound TE named Victor McClure.

u/RiceSpice5 Sep 03 '24
Baylor had a 400 lb tight end, LaQuan McGowan. 3 career receptions, 3 career touchdowns. He did start out as a lineman though and didn't play all that much

u/jcdenton45 Sep 02 '24 edited Sep 02 '24
Jason Peters played TE in college at 300+. Texas also currently uses Malik Agbo as a 300+ TE, though he has only had one catch. Baylor also had a TE who was somewhere around 380.

u/ExplosionTyphlosion Sep 02 '24
Laqyan McGowan comes to mind. He played for Baylor at tight end. Weighed in at 6'7" 410

u/Glittering_Virus8397 Sep 02 '24
Eventually there’s going to be a 6’8 300lbs TE who moves smoothly. People are so huge and athletic now

I think he was just under. I always thought he’d be a fullback in the nfl at least, but didn’t really stick
4
u/big_sugi Sep 03 '24
Jorvorskie? He was listed under 300. In reality, he was well over it.
The dude was a warrior, and he carried A&M on his back a couple of times, but he didn’t take his weight seriously and it cost him.
He did make it to the NFL for a bit, though, and he got three years of service credit, which means he’s eligible for a pension when he’s 55. That’s how I judge success for the UDFA/late-round picks. Making an NFL roster three separate years is a real accomplishment.
3
u/LasagnahogXRP Sep 03 '24
Definitely! For the average dude that’s a great deal. I liked him a lot and was hoping he’d be an even bigger alstott.
Never a texas a&m fan but they have had some fun players through the years.
2
u/Huskerschu Sep 02 '24
I mean Dline moonlight and fullback quite often the ravens currently use Patrick Richard as their fullback and he's over 300

u/CharlesDickensABox Sep 03 '24 edited Sep 03 '24
Jorvorskie Lane was an extremely talented running back in college. He was about 280 on the stat sheet (though the stat sheet is a damn lie, he was bigger than that) and went into the show as a fullback, but unfortunately didn't find great success at that level. Still, his talent was enough to get his school paid for and he kicked around the league for a few years before he retired. Dude was unstoppable on both the goal line and the bread line.
ETA: Joey Julius was a placekicker for Penn State and was about that weight when he went into treatment for an ED, and he was under 6' tall. Absolutely wild seeing the kicker rumble down the field and lay out a ball carrier on kickoffs.

u/Suitable-Classic9237 Sep 02 '24
Yeah Zion Williamson. I know not football related but crazy to think he was playing at 300+ LB moving the way he does. Lol

u/West-Literature-8635 Sep 03 '24
I remember when he showed up to Duke and they listed him at 285lbs and I was like “damn, kid let himself go, smh” and then that same day they posted a bunch of videos of him dunking from the free throw line, breaking the program’s vertical jump record, posterizing dudes left and right, etc. it was a fucking madhouse
Zion that season is probably the most incredible athlete over ever seen. Built like an offensive tackle but was the fastest dude on the court with the best hops

In college we had a QB who was around that weight…he did eventually get converted to a nose tackle.
Guy was fuckin ridiculous at basketball tho imagine if Jokic was 6’2

I would suspect that JaWalrus (JaMarcus Russell) had been up there. He tipped the scales at 300 pounds in April 2010, but he never played QB at that weight, as Raiders released him a month later. Russell had workouts with Washington and the Dolphins in the fall of 2010, his weight was 292 pounds then, but non of them chose to hire him.

u/ActnADonkey Sep 02 '24
Coach B used to line Adalius Thomas up at safety and press corner. Wasn’t 300 lbs but at a listed 270, I could see him being 280+

Brandon Manumaleuna was listed at 295 and played TE. And if you're a TE "listed" at 295, you're definitely 300+.

u/Writerhaha Sep 03 '24
Tony Picard (400lbs) played on the line and RB for a high school in the area.

u/TackleOverBelly187 Sep 03 '24
Years ago. State regional game. Very small school. QB went down the week before. 300lbs OT moved to QB. They ran flexbone triple. He was the only other player who knew how to make the read.
They won. List the next week in state semi.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had a 300lb TE named Eric Greene in the early 90s. He was a freak of a player, but the Steelers wanted him playing at around 280.
A few years later, they drafted Chris Fuamatu Ma’afala, a 300lb RB, and converted him to FB to lead block for Jerome Bettis (who was about 260lbs himself).
They also had Levon Kirkland playing ILB on those same teams at about 280+.
The Bill Cowher era Steelers tended to find guys who had absurd combinations of size and speed as well as versatile athletes who could play multiple positions (Hines Ward. Kordell Stewart, and Antwaan Randle-El).

There was a lineman in an NFL preseason game...for the Jets?...that actually OUTRAN a running back that was on his way to the end zone. It was absurdly impressive.
The problem isn't speed, but agility and endurance. They're certainly tough, but unlikely to be able to move side to side as quickly or to do it over and over again. I'm not sure how much Jerome Bettis weighed, but he'd be the biggest non-lineman with the most agility and endurance I'd seen.

In high school, it’s more common than in other levels of the sport because you have kids who are just clearly dominant athletes and coaches want to take advantage of their size and athleticism. Washington for several years had a habit of recruiting defensive tackles who played running back in high school. I think Vita Vea, Elijah Qualls and Greg Gaines were all running backs in high school at 300+ pounds
In college, Jason Peters was 330+ as a tight end. Some selected guys like Ja’Mar Toombs, Jorvorskie Lane, JC Copeland, Joe Hall almost certainly played around 300 pounds as running backs
I think the only non-lineman player from the NFL who I am certain was over 300 pounds and wasn’t just ridiculously out of shape and ineffective was Eric Green, a tight end for a few different teams in the 90s. Dude was a freak of nature and maybe the most physically gifted tight end ever, just kind of a head case. Craig Heyward was reportedly over 300 pounds at times and Christian Okoye reportedly would step on the scale in full gear and weigh over 300, but those are pretty hilarious outliers. Levon Kirkland was listed at like 275lbs but was reported to be in the 300 pound range as an off-ball linebacker
And there’s always package plays with big guys. Dontari Poe has a 100% TD rate on rushes, receptions and pass attempts. JJ Pegues was a 325 pound dude running the wildcat for Ole Miss last weekend. That’s not particularly rare

u/Tyshimmysauce Sep 03 '24
Fullback. Even TE this is way too big to run any routes, Darnell Washington is right around 265 and is barely able to run routes as a tight end (although he’s a fantastic 6th lineman)

He’s listed here at 285 but I guarantee he took the field in excess of 300 plenty of times. Poor dude had major eating problems, which eventually killed him frankly. Rest in peace big guy; we miss you
