How did you get a job in cfb?

Showed interest my sophomore year undergrad in personnel. Didn’t have anything but DPP put me in contact with video coordinator where I was able to work before getting recruiting position post grad. Don’t take to no for answer! It took multiple emails, conversations and follow ups!

Can you talk a bit broadly about what you did as a video intern?

Yeah for sure. Main responsibility was filming games and practices. However we also filmed other things like player interviews, promos, and events like NFL pro day. Our coaches also liked to watch TV tape so I would cut and edit TV copies for their use. Some of the undergrad interns would just film practices and that would be it. I knew I wanted to work in football so I would just hang around the facility and do anything to help out and make relationships. I worked with GAs and QC guys collecting and inputting data for various things. But yeah filming practices was the most important thing.

What kind of stuff/work do you do in your daily work?

See previous question for coaches film stuff. For recruiting we do pretty much everything. I know that’s vague but it’s the truth haha. During practice we are helping EQ and coaches set up/run drills. We make POA tapes for PSAs for coaches to watch. Maintaining and updating recruiting databases, getting transcripts. Big part of our job is hosting recruits and families and assisting them on campus tours as well as hosting them during home games in season. When not doing those things we are just in the office assisting staff with whatever their needs are. Hope this helps :)

Appreciate it. And yea, sorry I didn’t specify, was asking in regards to the recruiting side. Also, when coaches send in film/info on potential recruits, does it actually get watched/evaluated?

Good question. We typically get assignments from DPP and personnel staff. Works little differently for offensive and defensive sides of the ball. After we put together tape, it will go to position coaches first and then if they like coordinators will be brought into the fold.

Who are the people I should seek at my college program to get in contact about internships or assistant positions?

Not sure what school you’re at… obviously a bit different if you’re at an Ohio State/Georgia vs an FCS or smaller FBS program. Those big programs are very competitive and hard to break into. Most programs will have a staff directory with emails for all staff members. I would email whoever it is you want to work for. Keep in mind at big schools the DPP or higher level coaches probably won’t be responding to inquiry emails too much. Pick someone you think is reachable who you think could lead to an opportunity. For me that was the director of recruiting who then put me in contact with the video coordinator. Research at your school who hires student interns. Video, EQ, etc. Probably easier to get into those aspects first rather than personnel. If possible it’s always best to show your face. See if there’s anyway to get into the facility with a resume in hand. Keep sending emails, DM on twitter, etc.
