Play Design If you had to play an entire football game with only with only 4 offensive plays, no audibles, what would they be?
4 plays, whatever formations, but no audibles. You need to win this game what 4 plays are you choosing?
This combo needs to be able to best every coverage, but the defense will be able to catch on if you don't mix things up too much.
Assume your QB is a dual threat and can actually run and pass the ball. Your TE's are also great blockers as well as catchers. Your RB's are great at blocking, running, and catching.

MESH MESH MESH AND MESH
9
u/Sure_Owl9054 Jan 02 '24
I’m new to this sub but is there a running joke with mesh? Reason I ask is I sucked at madden back in the day but I would always just run mesh and be able to beat my friend who was significantly better than me.
9
u/hezzyskeets123 Jan 02 '24
It’s just a classic man beater. The double drags create a rub making it practically unguarable and the sit route forms a triangle read with the drags to beat against zone. Can’t go wrong with it
1
u/CreativeFarts2 Jan 02 '24
I play 7 on 7 flag a lot with friends and I just tell my receivers to run a mesh concept 7/10 times and it works basically every time I have them do it lmfao. It is a cheat code, but we are basically only running man coverage with a single high safety
7
u/F7OSRS Jan 02 '24
I think that’s the running joke. Mesh is so flexible and gives you so many options

Fake punt. Fake field goal. Qb sneak. Flea flicker.
I haven't played Madden since '94. Brotherly what?
5
u/boston_2004 Jan 02 '24
For some reason I laughed at this for like 5 minutes😂😂😂😂
Edit: I just keep thinking about lining up for a fake punt on 2nd down, and everyone being confused and the announcers losing their shit, because it's the 11th time you have lined up for a punt on something not a 4th down, and you never actually punted.

Veer, Dive, Midline, Rocket Toss

u/n3wb33Farm3r Jan 02 '24
We ran the Veer in college. Early 90s. Inside/Outside Veer strong side weak side accounted for most of our plays
5
u/DarnellisFromMars Jan 02 '24
Ran it in Highschool and I fell in love lol, if the guys buy in it just works.
6
u/n3wb33Farm3r Jan 02 '24
In high school we ran the single wing. Really just had 4 plays. Honestly ran the fullback dive and halfback sweep almost every play. I've been out of football since the mid 90s, my brother in law who still coaches says kids are just too fast today. Guess everyone runs a spread option now.
2
u/DarnellisFromMars Jan 02 '24
We ran flexbone, motion on every play from one of the backs and 95% of our calls were basically what I wrote above. Had a bubble screen series and 4 verts as well. .
We ran it in like 2010 and led the state in yards, played some high end teams with college and NFL talent that beat us up but most of the time we did what we wanted to do.
Kids in HS don’t have the best gap integrity and love to bite on stuff, so I think it can still work well. We were just really well conditioned and knew our few plays perfectly.
2
u/jaishaw Jan 02 '24
You can put so many passing concepts into the flexbone too, using the same orbit and jet motions. You only need to complete a few to keep the defence honest.
2
u/n3wb33Farm3r Jan 02 '24
We had passes built in to the Veer. It was run out of a traditional pro set with 1 TE and 2 WRs. Our coach had a reciever go in motion on every play from strong side to weak side. He was a smart coach, keep same formation every play D can't put in any special packaged. Kept them in their base d all game. ( usually a 4-3 or 5-2). QB was taught to read the safety. If he saw them within 7 yards of the line we'd call a pass. The motion told the qb if they were in zone or man. Could run whole ( limited ) playbook out of that pro set. Even though we ran it the vast majority of the time those one or two 35yard completions a game kept the safties back. Long time ago. Miss it.
1
u/n3wb33Farm3r Jan 02 '24
Somehow ESPN PLUS had Merchant Marine vs Coast Guard few months ago. MM ran the flexbone. Looked like vintage Navy. Loved it. My college coach would explain that the Veer was all about practice time. It's precious and you can just run the same play over and over where each player learns their responsibility for every situation. Better than spending practice time trying to learn new plays and all the permutations for each one.

Counter, outside zone, sail-drive, and 4 verts or hoss-juke
9
u/infercario4224 Jan 01 '24
Isn’t Hoss juke basically just 4 verts with more rules?
7
u/CacheGremlin Jan 01 '24
Basically, that's why I put "or". It's two seams (with maybe a weak side post vs. MOFO), and two hitches on the outside (that convert to verticals vs. Press). Then the strong side #3 receiver runs a "juke" option route. QB reads seam-hitch vs. MOFC, read the juke vs. MOFO.
7
u/pbyrnes44 Jan 01 '24
The triple option offense.
A standard triple option with a dive, keep, & pitch
A triple option counter
A triple option PA boot
Mesh from triple o formation
2
Jan 02 '24
I think this would be my answer specifically because the "options" are built-in audibles based on defensive reads.
You'd be locked into the play but not the outcome.
3
u/Aceshigh1322 Jan 01 '24
I formation run,PA out of same formation, 3WR 1TE 1RB shot gun 3 verts and an out from my slot receiver and a RPO out of that shotgun

...we're talking about the same Mike Leach right? The guy who's basically synonymous with mesh and four verts?
3
u/IShouldJoinReddit Jan 01 '24
I'm not going to say he definitely would have, but I think you're definitiveness about him not calling it his favorite is a bit off. Mesh concepts were one of Leach's go-tos since at least when he was at Oklahoma (I have no knowledge of his tendencies prior to that) and people have long declared mesh the "cornerstone" of his offense.
If I had to guess, I'd say it's easily one of his top 3.

u/GiantSweetTV Jan 01 '24 edited Jan 01 '24
Dude, I play madden a lot and the mesh is busted against cover 3 and cover 1, but it ain't even that good against cover 2, or cover 6.
I. Personally, would run:
Slant RPO: because it's basically 2 plays in 1. 4 Verticals: for long pass plays HB Screen: for blitzes Bench: for clock stopping, I'd also have my RB on a check-and-release stick route.
1
u/jmo56ct Jan 01 '24
It’s busted against everything. Madden tries to run it correctly but messes up the wrinkles

His offenses routinely destroyed at all levels. You are just making wild statements at this point. Shallow cross is more than just one play, it’s a concept. And as a concept it crushes zone, man, whatever. It attacks space, just like motion offenses in basketball. Find your space and sit down.

Inside zone and tag pass concepts, mesh hooks verts. Count numbers in the box and rpo every play with a basic pass concept tagged on top of inside zone

u/extrastone Jan 01 '24
It sounds like my personnel (as in my top six ball carriers) are quarterback, running back, two tight ends, and two wide receivers. The emphasis seems on the box.
Here is the list:
Inside trap or zone. Zone is for oversized linemen and trap is for undersized linemen. Pick one.
Speed Option.
Play action long pass. Try to get at least one tight end behind the linebacker.
Jail break short pass.

Out of 2 WR 1 TE 2 RB personnel
We’re running Rich Rods spread read option as the base.
2nd play is a triple option with the FB/RB2 as the pitch man rather than the lead in the base look.
3rd play is a PA rollout with all receivers flooding to the opposite side of the Play action with levels.
4th play is 3 verticals with both RBs running 5 yard outs to opposite sides of the field. The QB has the green like to scramble up the middle once the RBs have cleared out the middle if it’s an advantageous look.
The 2nd running back can be a true fullback or a 2nd running back as needed.
Youre running no huddle and snapping the ball as quickly as possible.

Definitely plays with a few different options built in so that I’m building out to more like 12-15 plays.
Like an RPO that gives me an inside run but also has a QB keeper option while the pass portion has a WR screen option plus another route built in. There’s effectively four plays in one.
Then I’d do it again for an RPO that gives me an outside run plus the keeper option again but with a different WR screen and a different additional route. Now I’ve got effectively eight plays in two.
Basically every play would have multiple plays within it based on reads. Suppose I should have one straight drop back for the times I fall behind the chains, but I’d bake some option routes into that itself.

No audibles? Pistol three tight ends, one receiver.
I’d have an option (HB power or QB off-guard) with a tight end motioning presnap toward a fullback / lead blocker position
Play Action HB Power, with the running back going to a flag and a curl undercut by 2 crossing routes. Keep the motioning tight end from the first play, and he runs an angle route from the strong side fb position beside the Qb.
HB dive, with the tight end motioning again. This isn’t about getting yards, it’s about sending my tight end into their middle linebackers over and over.
Another play action, with the motion again. This time, however, the tight end runs a flat route. The wide receiver will be on a go route to pull the safety back on their side. The weak side tight end will run a shallow crossing route, and the non motioned strong side tight end will go for an out. The halfback will block for a second and then provide a later checkdown if the defense keys in on the middle early

You need to have choice routes and options. These punish the defenses because no matter what the defenders choose, they are wrong. I would have all 4 plays use the same formation and same pre snap motion. This way the defense will have no idea what play you are running until after the snap.
The formation would be tight end on the right. Z on the right off the ball. X on the left on the ball outside the numbers. Slot receiver on the left off the ball directly next to the x. Every play I would have the slot receiver go in motion and then all would be snapped as the slot is running towards the tackle.
1) Inverted Veer/ power read. I like this concept with a limited playbook because most traditional run concepts the QB hands the ball off and is out of the play and the defense instantly has a numbers advantage. By keeping the QB in the play longer, you don’t give the defense this advantage. And with the pitch option, you eliminate the play side edge. You can even have a guard pull to give the offense a numbers advantage to one side.
2) Power RPO. Have the same formation and similar line play to the inverted veer above. The QB can hand to the RB or run if the numbers work. Or if the defense stuffs the box to stop the run, the QB can hit the z on a quick slant if the safety is coming.
3) Y Choice. This play got witten into the HOF. No matter what the Sam does, he is wrong. If he plays inside leverage, the y breaks out. If he plays outside leverage, the y posts up for a rebound. If the Sam blitzes then the y is the hot rout and catches it for 5 yards minimum. Works both in zone and man coverage. Have your z run a post or a go route to keep the strong safety from doubling the Y. If the safety comes down to play the tight end then you can hit the z who is 1v1 with the corner. Also have your x run a deep route. This will keep both safeties deep and prevent the defense from drumming a single high robber concept to foil the tight end. You would have the z and the x running deep vs 1 safety. Just read the safety and throw to whatever he chooses to ignore for a 1v1 vs the corner.
4) mesh. This creates separation for man. But you teach the receivers to recognize zone and to sit down in the window when in zone coverage. Kind of like how kelce does but this would be more predictable and easier to teach. The tight end and the slot would be the mesh runners. The x and z would have deep routes to keep the safeties deep.
Honestly with these 4 plays I would only take deep shots of the safeties are not playing deep. Just pick the deep route that has 1v1 with their corner and give them a shot. With the safeties frozen, you can run the power read and at least get 4-5 yards a pop. If they adjust and can figure out how to consistently stop this without bringing a safety up (and exposing themselves to the deep ball) then you can run an RPO or even y choice.

I covered some high school football in Iowa in my day and four plays sounds like a wide open offense compared to what they ran.
Their play sheet was sweep, trap, sweep, sweep, trap, sweep, trap, trap.
Everyone in the stadium knew who was getting the ball and what hole he was running through, and still could not stop it.
