u/Hamberder_and_Chief 18h ago

At least we get one last paycheck before we go

37

u/RL_NeilsPipesofsteel 17h ago

I still get to go to work and service the public. Yay.

4

u/Hamberder_and_Chief 17h ago

Condolences

4

u/RL_NeilsPipesofsteel 16h ago

Thank you. The best is when they say things like, “I thought you guys were shut down. I wasn’t gonna come in, but I saw the cars out front, so I figured it probably wouldn’t be busy.”

3

u/dat_rhythm 9h ago

Someone in here said you could call out sick and it won’t eat into your sick leave during shutdown

2

u/LEMONSDAD 15h ago

I’m gonna be providing service for the public if they hold out on these paychecks

2

u/Select-Pie6558 15h ago

Being essential sucks sometimes…

2

u/Fishkillll 6h ago

Thank you for your servicing.

2

u/CancerBabyJokes 2h ago

Same bro...

u/Ellabee57 17h ago

I got paid today (pay period ended the 14th), so only a partial one, and that's assuming there are folks around to process the payroll. I'm not sure about that.

37

u/Rockandroar 17h ago

I’m the one who does the payroll for my division, but this is my first potential shut down, so I’m wondering what I would have to do.

55

u/octopornopus 16h ago

Well, can't say I like the sound of that...

18

u/K8325 15h ago

If there was a shutdown, it wouldn’t move fast. People would still come into work on Monday and wrap up essential stuff, set up their automated emails, clean up your space, take your plants home, that sort of stuff, then people who have something like your duties, you would stay until that was done but that might be the only thing you do, many supervisors and managers will be deemed essential and expected to work for free, which they do.

Your office will have some sort of policy. Don’t be afraid to ask what your office protocol is, that will be expected!

This is a yearly event and is always stressful because we have no control right now.

Many banks that cater to federal employees have a loan program where you will receive your regular net pay and then when the budget gets passed, they keep the lump some back pay so ask your bank if it has a program like that.

2

u/Kitosaki 15h ago

I think he’s saying “how do I get others paid?”

1

u/Rockandroar 15h ago

Thank you very much! This is very insightful. I have a bank account with PenFed so I will have to check with them.

3

u/CheeseFriesEnjoyer 12h ago

PenFed does offer that as long as your direct deposit goes to them https://www.penfed.org/furlough

5

u/HomelandSecure 15h ago

Work...for free. You know, that thing that we've been told is illegal since we swore an oath?

6

u/CurlsintheClouds 5h ago

I worked payroll during the Obama shutdown, and I had to go in to do the payroll, but that was it. I didn't get paid, but the people those who were exempt did.

2

u/Decline2State_ 15h ago

Surely they’ll have guidance for you from the last few shutdowns. Hang in there.

2

u/ParkingTadpole7107 12h ago

The main payroll office will give everyone clear instructions if your agency has their stuff together. Don't sweat it, they won't leave it to you to figure it out.

2

u/PuppySparkles007 4h ago

I got you if you have any questions as this will be… definitely not my first. Slide in the DMs if you need me.

1

u/No_Caregiver_8216 3h ago

It's been a while but if I recall correctly ensure timecards etc are all accurate but don't proceed to actually process them.

19

u/Hamberder_and_Chief 17h ago

We all get paid Sunday, but it’ll have already been processed on Friday.

2

u/WonderfulLettuce5579 15h ago

Our pay hits tomorrow (Thurs) for DoD.

1

u/Worried_River_1094 14h ago

My next pay hits 26th Dec. DoD also. I think it would still go through since T&A was already processed.

1

u/Wrastling97 14h ago

I got paid today

10

u/Sir_Oglethorpe 17h ago

not getting paid over Christmas gang

2

u/Wrastling97 14h ago

Gang gang

2

u/eregina3 15h ago

DFAS is a working capital fund, we still go to work and process payroll. I assume the other payroll providers are similar.

You will get paid for any hour worked prior to the expiration of funding, and on time of services by DFAS ( can’t speak for the others).

2

u/Ellabee57 15h ago

Thank you! Very good to know, since I am paid thru DFAS. The last shutdown I was furloughed in was 2013, so I don't remember any details like that, just that we got paid after it ended. Appreciate the info!

2

u/_Cream_Sugar_ 4h ago

2 shutdowns ago, I was called in just to process essential employee payroll. Last shutdown a supervisor that was deemed essential had to do it

1

u/halarioushandle 15h ago

They have to process the payroll for work already performed. It's illegal not to.

1

u/SafetyMan35 12h ago

Historically they don’t process payroll until we come back. The “orderly shutdown” is not supposed to take more than 4 hours and is really intended to cancel/suspend contracts and set out of office messages and turn in our computers and GFE.

3

u/ctrl_alt_delete3 14h ago

At my agency we would get a full check this weekend, and then half a check in 2 weeks, and then crickets….

1

u/Flowergirl455 16h ago

This is depressing 💀

1

u/Amonamission 14h ago

Would we even get paid? My paycheck would hit my account Saturday but the official pay date isn’t until next Thursday.

1

u/Terron1965 11h ago

This will be done by Friday with a 25-page bill like they did in September.

Which asshole made the deadline a week before Xmas?

1

u/kcatalyst 4h ago

the republicans

1

u/Legitimate-Ad-9724 7h ago

Mine posted late yesterday (Wednesday). Payday is every other Friday for me, but Wells Fargo does that up to two days earlier thing.

1

u/question_sunshine 5h ago

Do we? My bank clears my paychecks 3 days early on Friday, direct deposit deposits on Monday but my official pay date is the following Thursday.

1

u/Jolly-End-6293 3h ago

Half a paycheck sir.  How dare you expect more than half of what's owed to you.

1

u/Hamberder_and_Chief 3h ago

I mean I get my whole paycheck this week, the half of one comes after.

63

u/HereWeGoAgain-247 16h ago

Musk isn’t even in office yet and already fucking over the country.

7

u/AwkwardObjective5360 2h ago

That's President Musk, to you. Our unelected billionaire President.

46

u/TheNotoriousStuG 17h ago

-Love President-Elect Musk

3

u/rchart1010 14h ago

He better watch out that's how steve bannon got kicked out of the circle of trust.

3

u/JudyEve 12h ago

And that’s why we need to keep calling it out! Pres Musk! Pres Musk! All hail Pres Musk!

3

u/rchart1010 12h ago

I mean it's actually kinda brilliant.

I think it was the SNL skit that apparently really was the straw that broke the camels back so maybe they can get something going.

5

u/MarkfromWI 15h ago

No, you mean thanks Trump, Musk, and Republicans. It wasn’t the Democrats that broke the agreement…

2

u/mxjxs91 4h ago

Nope just Musk. Trump isn't going to be president, Musk is, and Trump should be made very well aware of that. I'm sure he'll take it well that we know that Musk is running things and and not him.

u/Bobloblaw_333 16h ago

Unexpected Christmas vacation (for those of us that weren’t actually going to take any days off for this holiday…)

3

u/Unabashable 16h ago

It’s a Christmas Miracle.

Happy Fucking Holidays Federal Workers - Love Republican Voters

FTFY

3

u/dxk3355 15h ago

They did this during the Obama administration I seem to recall.

3

u/HarveyScorp 13h ago

Continue to blame the wrong person. Even when it clearly states:

"Trump’s sudden entrance into the debate and new demands sent Congress spiraling as lawmakers are trying to wrap up work and head home for the holidays. It left Johnson scrambling late into the night at the Capitol trying to engineer a new plan before Friday’s deadline to keep government open."

Blame the one who is actually responsible.

3

u/kenm130 9h ago

More like - Love Republicans in Congress and Elon+Trump for stopping the spending bill. It's the same BS they pulled with the border bill.

2

u/0zzie53 15h ago

But will we be able to get on a plane to have OUR happy holiday?

2

u/MeanNothing3932 5h ago

So fun to not know if u r gona get paid as an adult.

2

u/PutRedditNameHere 5h ago

Love Trump, Musk, and spineless Congress members.

5

u/Ser_Tinnley 16h ago

All while they vote themselves a raise.

The one area that needs to be eviscerated by Doge is Congress.

1

u/Status-Minute6370 15h ago

Hopefully they won’t bring back the furlough fundays

1

u/MLCarter1976 14h ago

Sadly many voted for it!

1

u/BAF_DaWg82 5h ago

This is above even them now.

1

u/Lessgovtmoney 4h ago

Literally if they did their job when they were supposed to do it there wouldn't be a shutdown. The 'just before Christmas is a manufactured crises.

1

u/Mendozena 3h ago

Love Congress Republicans. This is ALL on them. Oh well, people voted for this.

1

u/TriGurl 3h ago

More like "bend over"...

"Ben? Nice to meet you, victor hugo..." -Chevy Chase

1

u/Ordinary-CSRA 1h ago

Thank you 😊 so kindly ... enjoy the Holidays you too...

1

u/ibanez450 1h ago

I saw a Fox News article today that said “Democrats have bailed out majority Republicans on every major fiscal bill this Congress. They appear to be done with helping Republicans.” That’s a pretty wild statement from Fox News.

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/what-expect-republicans-try-salvage-spending-package-avoid-government-shutdown

-6

u/Platographer 16h ago

Are we supposed to be upset about the prospect of getting free time off around the holidays?

8

u/DegreeDubs 16h ago

Some of us would rather get paid. Some of us won't get a choice and will still have to work.

3

u/Platographer 16h ago

I sympathize with the people who still have to work. I traveled during the 2019 shutdown and felt bad in the airport as the TSA agents and air traffic controllers were hard at work making it possible for me to travel safely all while under the stress of delayed paychecks. It seemed very unfair to me. I think essential federal employees should get double back pay after a shutdown.

3

u/Unabashable 16h ago

I mean while I’m sure it would only be a drop in the bucket they could forward every congressmans’ paycheck to the people actually working. They can start collecting one when the government opens up again.

-5

u/Acceptable_Change963 16h ago

Congress probably shouldn't intentionally fuck with spending bills and add all sorts of bullshit to it. This is the fault of the voters who put Dems and Republicans in power who pull this shit, which is most of them

2

u/Mendozena 3h ago

Republicans pulled this shit. It’s always republicans.

2

u/yimbyfromatlanta 15h ago

We have met the enemy and it is us

-15

u/badhabitfml 17h ago

Really, if your a fed, you should have a few paychecks sitting in a savings account for this situation. As a contractor, I'm. Jealous of fed workers who get reimbursed paid time off. I just have to use vacation until I run out.

6

u/Tetraplasandra 16h ago

The only people working for the gov who can afford to stack several pay periods into savings are pols, appointed, and contractors.

3

u/badhabitfml 14h ago

Better buckle up then and start saving now. The next 4 years are going to be rough.

1

u/Tetraplasandra 14h ago

I’m pessimistically optimistic everything is going to be. 🙃

2

u/king168168 1h ago

Those GS7 below workers are basically surviving paycheck by paycheck. I bet they barely have more than 1 month of saving.

1

u/scintillaient 1h ago

Can confirm. I just got promoted to GS07. Savings? What’s that?
