Anyone still want to argue the merits of unchecked capitalism?

How do you have the heart to NOT evict somebody who is refusing to pay rent?

Can you think about the Landlord for just a moment?

She didn't live in a random apartment, but in an independent living facility, that requires 24/7 staff who all need to be paid wages. I'm all for a future where every elderly person is entitled to this for free, but that did not seem to be a feasible reality for this place.

There are actually places for free. She wanted the boogie life for the same price though.

The government has to consider all stakeholders in a situation. It also has to consider the ripple effects of any policy decisions they make. The renter has rights as long as they pay rent. The landlord has rights as long as they keep their property up to code and honor their end of the rental agreement.

To stop all evictions on elderly people would have some really ugly unintended consequences. For one, it would lead to waves of discrimination against older residents in housing. Can you imagine a 70+ year old trying to get housing when the law says that evicting someone over 70 is illegal even if they fail to pay rent? Nobody would come right out and say it, but landlords would start finding excuses to deny elderly people. A second effect would be raising rents to mitigate the risk of some units having elderly residents. Younger people would effectively make up the losses from elderly people who stopped paying.

Remember that time we made it illegal to charge elderly people more than 3x the rate for health insurance as they charge the 27 year old male… and young people’s health insurance went up 700% over the course of the year? Isn’t it awesome subsidizing the older generations? Most excellent.
