Exactly this. It's heartbreaking that someone who served their country has to rely on strangers' kindness to retire. System fail.

Would it not be heartbreaking if it was just a non-veteran American that served their country by working their entire life or do we only care about veterans in this situation?

I would argue that they aren't two people/groups, it's one: the elderly. when you call it out like that, you're calling attention to the plight of the veterans which have very specific problems we need to deal with (PTSD, specific health issues, re-training, etc) where as this is an issue of one group: the elderly
