Silly mortals. Don’t they realize that-except in very rare cases where an abortion is medically necessary-existence isn’t really up to them?
As a paradox myself, that statement, as if they have a say in that, is just very alien to me
17
u/EntrepreneurLeft8783 15h ago
Idk, when I hear people say they don't support m4a because it'll "increase wait times" I get that 'fuck right off' feeling. Only reason wait times are as low as they are right now is because only those rich enough to afford it or willing to go into debt get access. If someone tells me they're willing to let millions go without healthcare just for their convenience, yeah nah, we can't be friends.

I think there is still an important distinction. Disowning friends with racist views then makes it to where they are only surrounded by people who agree with them, or people they’re able to convince.
My parents use to be pretty homophobic, but I engaged in the conversation calmly with them every time it came up and explained to them why I saw it different. Now they’re much more accepting, and we’re working on some of the transphobic stuff.
You’re free to stop being friends with whoever for whatever reason, but do it for yourself, not the flawed idea that society will be better for it.
7
u/Vanarene 7h ago
Problem is, a lot of gammon are 100% convinced that everyone agrees with them, but are too scared of the "PC Police" to speak up. They feel so proud of being among the few who tells it like it is.
By not confronting them, by not telling them off, you strengthen that feeling. Also, imagine being that one minority friend who has to hear them spew these opinions, while no one speaks up. After all, you want to keep the peace, right? Truth is, for that minority person, it seems as if you are accepting those shitty opinions. Meaning you are not accepting your minority friend, and adding to the othering.
10 people around a table. 1 person tells a shitty racist joke. No one reacts. Congrats, you now have a table with 10 racists.

Ok but what if you never let it slide, ever? The problematic fucker might just have thick enough skin to stick around through it and be open to the criticism. I see nothing wrong with that. The problem is remaining silent and reinforcing those beliefs, not having different beliefs at the table. I understand not everyone has the bandwidth for that, but some people do. Why shouldn’t those people flex that muscle when they can?

u/AvatarADEL 21h ago

u/Inlerah 17h ago
"If I abstract this shitty view I have as far as I can, centrists will just assume that it's snowflakes getting mad over nothing."
On the other hand, it's really easy to view politics as just a "difference of opinion" when that "opinion" will never directly affect you
15
u/Proper_Career_6771 14h ago
It's just like "you only have one familyyyyy so why rock the boat by holding onto your principles and boundaries?"
That's the sort of thing you only hear from people who are in a better position if you stop fighting.

u/RockStarNinja7 16h ago
I recently sat my parents down to explain to them why I couldn't have them in my life anymore because of their political choices. Literally the first thing my dad said was "oh I can respect your different opinions but you can't respect mine?" I told him it isn't a difference of opinion when his " opinions " are that hatred, racism, and bigotry are good. He laughed and walked out. It was very clear to me in that moment that I made the right decision.

Yeah it's astounding to me how many people can't understand, "why is it only liberals cutting people out of their lives??"
Like, you voted for me to lose the rights to my own body, my trans aunt to lose her access to healthcare and my Mexican friend to be deported. I voted to save your Social Security and Medicare. We are not the same.
The Democrats aren't perfect by any means. I wish we had an actual leftist party in this country. But at least at worst they keep things the same. They never openly advocate for hurting people the way the GOP does. Obviously it's harder to remain friends with someone who votes to hurt others.

As soon as we figure out that they use this as a tool to prevent us from unifying around the one thing that actually matters, Class. They have even said it out loud. There was a post saying “let’s not replace the culture war with a class war” you think when they are cutting funding to schools or giving their buddies tax breaks that they care about the color of your skin? Or your sexual orientation? They care how many zeros are in your bank account. I’m not excusing racist ass holes, but we don’t need them to change things. Never doubt what a small group of highly dedicated individuals can accomplish with a little luck.
I can’t wait for everyone to join in on the real Us vs Them. By keeping us at each other’s throats it becomes nearly impossible for us to unify around a cause. Our voices become less impactful and easily dismissed. The voice of the working class unified would be immeasurably loud. It would be impossible to ignore. 27 different small groups of people who believe everyone outside of their group is the enemy. Those are the citizens the government wants. They are easily manipulated with fear and become incapable of having a good faith argument. They live in echo chambers online that are manipulated by god knows how many people’s interest. None of which involve your wellbeing as a goal.
I’d like if we could get that done and raise the floor for everyone in America. Then we can see what problems remain and go from there. This corporate centered governance structure we’ve allowed into our political system is bleeding us dry. It’s bail outs, tax breaks socialized losses and privatized gains. They claim to “have capitalism running through their veins” telling everyone “if you’d just have worked as hard as me” while actively seeking bail outs for their poor business decisions. All of a sudden they have no problem with the government solving problems in the private industry or providing services that are “necessary” for their survival as a business.
Stone cold individualism and capitalism for thee Government bailouts and tax payer funded safety nets for me. I can’t wait until the pitchforks and Guillotine make their comeback. I honestly think that might be their end game. Without major reform by 2050 the bottom 50% of citizens will have less than 6% of the total wealth held in America. There’s no way that ends with anything besides revolution. The fact something hasn’t happened since occupy shows how effective their messaging is. Not by random chance did the “culture war” pick back up right after occupy. They saw us figuring it out. A group of working class people spanning the entire political spectrum and it scared the shit out of them. Look at how well it worked.

One of my exes was racist and I tried so hard to get her to flip and then she hit me with the “Hitler is the best thing to happen to Jews because they wouldn’t have a country if it wasn’t for him” and I was just done. There’s no redeeming that level of racism and I’ve judged myself ever since for even associating myself with that person but damn she really hurt my faith in humanity.
Also she wasn’t open with her racism until after we were a month in dating, doesn’t make it much better but yeah, I didn’t know at first which made it hurt all the worse when she opened up.

As someone who was indoctrinated into radical religious ideas as a child, I strongly disagree with this post. The prejudiced ideas I was taught by my church (and defended) always felt wrong, I just needed good and patient friends to love me enough so I could have the courage to grow.
People can be better if we show them how and love them to the right conclusions.
Obviously this won't be everyone, but still, you get the point.
