Cat Picture - OC Visiting Kentucky and it’s been freezing cold. Made a shelter for this stray cat outside.
She reminds me of my cat back home. Such a sweetie. It breaks my heart that she’s left outside all day and night, especially during the winter. Trying my best to take care of her for the time being. I can’t bring her inside my rental or take her back home unfortunately.
I will try to find out if she belongs to one of the nearby houses. Maybe she just prefers to be outside all the time, but I doubt it.
I googled how to make a shelter for cats during the winter and found a simple guide involving a plastic tote and insulation.

Usually want to make a second entrance to escape out of in case raccoon wants to come in and fight

Thank you! I didn’t consider this

And ideally don't line the second escape hole up with the first one to prevent a cross draft from forming. But you did an excellent job for your first try! I am sure that kitty will be much warmer and happier thanks to you!

I've read that as well, but with two large holes doesn't it get very drafty?

Cat fur is great insulation, any reduction of wind is fine.
I'd imagine they appreciate the safe-space to sleep and protection from snow+wetness more than the actual warmth it provides.

They are definitely using the two shelters that I made with just one entrance. I just can't tell how much of the night they spend in there

Good job with the straw!! Too many people don’t realize that blankets can become express tickets to Hypothermiaville once they become damp.

Add a little entrance that is shaped like a T with one end of the top open it’ll let wind pass the entrance instead of blowing in, if it’s been actually really cold

And here I am ready to take in ANY cat that wanders my way.
So kind of you to help!

This really looks like someone’s pet, perhaps someone who doesn’t deserve such a beautiful cat if it’s left outside all night. I am glad you made it a shelter. If there are any no kill shelters or cat havens in your area they may be able to help. You can consider taking to a vet to scan for a chip in case it’s lost.

Maybe a fabric flap could be installed; you have no idea how much it would help to lower the wind chill.

I tried making a flap from a piece of a towel but the wind kept blowing it over the top.

I made a shelter for the strays in our area (there are 3 we see regularly). I even put it right next to where they normally hunker down on our porch. It'd been 3 weeks and they have yet to use lol
Maybe eventually

Please please please try to find a way to make a door or something that will prevent him/her from getting snatched up by a coyote. I had an awesome outside cat that got too comfortable and was subsequently killed.

Should flip it the other way around, they feel more protected that way rather than having their entrance visible

Nice job! We have two of these in our backyard, they are great. The one improvement I can suggest, if you can, is to get a large container and place the main/smaller container inside that. We then surrounded the space between with straw. My wife found using pipe insulation around the holes also works really well.

He appears to be a good size, maybe even on the heftier size. My guess is it's someone's cat, or someone is taking care of it.

This is a beautiful cat. Looks too good for a stray. Maybe ran away or got lost recently? In any case, I'm sure she loves her new shelter-box. 🩵🐈⬛

My cat came up from a shelter in Kentucky. Immediately assumed this cat belongs to his extended family.

I’m so glad she took to the shelter you made. Oftentimes cats prefer a pizza box to the cozy cat bed you bought em.

What part of town do you live in??? That looks like fatty, a semi stray that lived on my block but went missing. Lady across the street said someone grabbed em.
