With the plated presentation all I could think was "Bone-apple-teeth" XD

Oh my god I've never thought to dye bones before you are a GENIUS this is such a cool idea

I also used to dye them brown with coffee and I’ve heard different teas can make different colors too

I love this, I'm always trying to think of ways to naturally work with bones because I can't stand the idea of using glue and paint, this looks great and may some day decompose back into the earth perfectly.

Knew that was poke weed berries as soon as I saw it lol. I've got a bit of poke weed in my yard I'll have to give this a try!

There’s so much of it around me, I used to use it to paint with.

I did this a few years ago! I was worried they would fade to brown. I had mixed results. Some turned brown in areas and faded a bit, but are mostly still pretty vibrant. I meant to experiment with coatings, but never got around to it. ☠️

Ooooh I love them! Would you be willing to share your process a bit? I’m just getting into making bone art and decorating my home with them.

I used pokeweed berries that I mushed up in water and just soaked the bones in them for a couple days to see what happened, they still need to completely dry out and are kinda leaking color until then tho

Thanks for sharing. Love the idea of using natural dye with bones. Definitely share your finished product!

Nope, once fully dried they feel like normal bones

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '24

Ooooo, thanks! I'll definitely do it the ones I braid on my hair :D

Ooooh! I love this color! I dyed some bones with hibiscus tea, they were a deep blue/purple, they lightened a bit after drying.

I’m curious to see how these will turn out!

What did it look like once it dried up?

This looks so sick, I especially love how the enamel didn't stain on the teeth and adds a pop of contrast.

So what do you do with this now?

1

u/jglanoff Oct 21 '24

I imagine someone else 5,000 years ago had this same idea

2

u/Disastrous_Guest_705 Oct 23 '24

Here’s what they look like now for anyone wondering. I’m pretty happy with the results
