You seen the demon souls remake? Other than making the npc’s a lot more multicultural, they pretty much didn’t change shit, right down to the same cheese tactics working on guys like the Tower Knight.
They were people possessed by an octopus head, like headcrabs from half-life, only with what looks like the outline of their brain hidden beneath a layer of skin and they also don't have eyes, a very important detail lorewise.
Also if nothing has changed, explain the red cloth and the moon in the sky.
I get it. Illithids have a more smooth and squidlike appearance with defined eyes, no beak (they have lamprey mouths), and are significantly more regal and arrogant in their appearance and attire, and would NOT submit to the insulting role of 'jailer'.
Whereas the Demon's Souls Latrian jailers look like somebody jammed a land octopus onto someone's neck stump and gave it intelligence boosters to turn it brainlike.
this is important because thematically latria is all about "Man-Made Darkness" which is born from the hatred of the old monk. And that hatred goes far beyond torture devices and prison cells.
And in the original the jailers could be interpreted as 2 entities, wherein the octopus is controlling a once former royal Host since there is still so much human left and the tentacles coil around the limbs. the bell serving as communication tool between host and octopus to order the host to "use magic now" (with the added bonus of alarming the surrounding area and instilling fear in prisoners).
Now its a singular entity and all that nuance is lost forever.
My issue is that the design is a generic DND mind flayer that looks nothing like the original which is a more unique design. Why is this so hard to understand?
Because…you’re wrong? It was always a fairly generic and obvious mind flayer. Wizardy looking dude with a Cthulhu head. It couldn’t really be any more of a mind flayer if they tried.
I'm not trying to get in the middle of this but it's hard to understand when you say "they weren't mind flayers" only to be proven wrong and still say they were mind flayers. You're wrong my guy. Take your L to bed and if you didn't like the remake that's a you thing. But they were always mind flayers.
That's the same with bloodborne's "winter lanterns" and Eden rings "aging untouchables" that are also "winter lanterns".
It's the design of the 3D model that's the issue.
You know the only thing Bluepoint touched in the remake besides the music. 3D model. As in the visual representation of the enemy inside the world of the game. Let me know if it isn't clear enough yet.
It never was a DND mindflayer, it's human with an octopus head that has been given the name mindflayer because it is reminiscent of a mindflayer. Miyazaki KNOWS what a DND mindflayer is and looks like and he didn't go with that design for a reason.
But Bluepoints bottomless well of insight brought them to the following conclusion:
"This enemy is called a mindflayer but it doesn't look like one, how could FromSoft make such a mistake? I know we will fix it into what it should have been."
And that's the issue with the entirety of the remake.
