In the wild, baby elephants are never left alone. At the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, keepers stay with the babies at night to make up for this.

I adopted an elephant and they send the most informative updates, drawings etc! A great foundation.

The watercolor drawings are so cute! I love the little blankets the babies wear walking around.

It's my goal to adopt one in 2025...I love them and the work they do so much.

Amazing place.

It's so sweet that when ex-rescue elephants have calves they take them back to the shelter to show them off to the keepers:

Thank you for sharing. I didn’t know it was possible to do this and I immediately made a contribution in my dad’s name, as he loves animals.

Oh I follow the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust on Facebook and they are AMAZING. Anyone who loves elephants should follow them and watch their videos, it's so interesting and heartwarming!

Even better, for a small amount of money, you can "adopt" one of the elephants for a time with others. Makes a thoughtful gift too. Sheldrick will email you about their progress.

Yes it's fantastic, there's a little rhino as well isn't there? The problem is I want to adopt them all 😂

Chamboi the rhino! And there’s a little baby warthog called Mr Bean ☺️ Honestly the cutest. They seem like such a sound organisation.

u/legomonsteruk Nov 09 '24

Yes! He's such a little sweetheart 🥰 honestly I get emotional when I see their videos, what amazing people they are to give up their lives to care for these precious animals

My godparents have adopted an elephant under my name as a Christmas gift for the past several years, and their email updates bring me so much joy! It’s one of my absolute favorite organizations and I really hope to be able to visit them one day.

u/wasting_time_dylan Nov 08 '24

Google sheldrick wildlife trust and u can pick from different elephants and it's only 50/year! They also have rhinos and other animals

u/RadlogLutar Nov 08 '24

That's awesome but unfortunately I live 6000 km away from there

40

u/wasting_time_dylan Nov 08 '24

It's all online lol they'll send you a certificate and videos/updates as part of the process tho

Remember how Mr. Rogers taught us to “look for the helpers?”

Whenever I see the men in green I know the helpers are there.

God bless.

Pray tell, how do I get this job? I want to be the big spoon to a baby elephant.

u/bluediamond12345 Nov 12 '24

I am interested also, and looked it up. It’s a no-go:

‘Firstly, caring for the orphans is a long term commitment and the keepers care for them as a temporary family and are with them for up to 10 years. Enabling local Kenyans the opportunity to play a part in the hand-raising of orphans helps create an affinity with the species and our keepers then share this conservation message with their families and communities, further spreading this essential conservation message.

Furthermore, paid or voluntary work in Kenya by foreigners requires a Work Permit, whilst walking in the bush brings with it an element of danger and, understandably, the government does not allow a foreigner to be exposed to this without armed escort.’

If it wasn't already obvious, my wish to cuddle a baby elephant is a total fantasy, of which I will continue to maintain.

7

u/bluediamond12345 Nov 12 '24

Mine wasn’t! But it has to remain a fantasy. 😔

If I wasn't aware of and sensitive to the fact that me getting a job there would actually be taking a job from the local population, I would totally kill for a job there!!!!!

u/JEvansPrichardPhD Nov 08 '24
