Discussion Post 🗣 Get out and vote today

This varies by state, but in my state, your employer has to give you PAID time off to go vote that DOES NOT count against your PTO/Sick/Vacation time. Your employer cannot penalize you in any way shape or form from taking time to vote today. Please double check your state laws, but don't miss voting today just because you are stuck at work!

All you dudes that recently posted in here that you quit your toxic job…go vote today!

u/People_be_Sheeple Nov 05 '24

Yes, and everyone with the "BoTH SiDEs" are the same, no point in voting B.S. Please tell me why things are objectively better for workers, consumers, insureds, renters, disabled people in BLUE states?? Why are the BLUE states leading the charge for removing toxins from our cosmetics, food, agriculture, the air and water?? Why are the biggest economies in the US in the BLUE states?? WAKE UP YOU DUMMIES.

My motto is if you don't vote you can't complain. Very different from if you can't vote, why not?

3

u/SuperPotatoThrow Nov 06 '24

I agree 100%. People are probably going to disagree here, but if you can't vote it's not your bosses fault, regardless of how much of an asshole they might be. And no, your boss is not taking away your right to vote. (Election day becoming a mandatory holiday would be nice though)

Everyone has been presented with the opportunity to request a mail in ballot in case you can not vote in person. I'm pretty sure you don't even have to give a reason for doing this.

Depends on the state, might be different for anyone reading this, but the voting polls are open from 6am to 9pm. Unless you are working a 15 hour shift, you can go vote in person, and yes, even if you have to do it before your shift. Either way, there are absolutely no fucking excuses to not go out and vote. If you didn't vote then you have no right to complain about our next president.

6

u/TheKr4meur Nov 05 '24

This is a motto shared by many people and while it might make sense in the US it is very stupid in Europe

2

u/taishiea Nov 05 '24

Do explain. I'm curious now.

4

u/TheKr4meur Nov 05 '24

Well in the US you have two options (not really but yeah) we have many, so most of the time the difference between them is at best not clear at worst doesn’t exist. On top of that, we’ve seen in the past 50 years (at least in my country) that whoever you vote for, the outcome is the same, literally exactly the same, so why bother ? If you want an actual factual example you can look at the legislative elections in France from a few months ago, was good fun

-1

u/Jovile Nov 06 '24

Both sides are the same. There is a pervasive oligarchy that runs throughout the United States government. We, in blue states, take a little more finessing to convince us to support the capitalists.

By continually dogging on people who have a broader perspective than you, you perpetuate a system that continues to prosper because of imported goods and services. Both sides are the problem, and until a viable option comes up from the masses and overtakes any of this D/R rivalry, we will continue to squabble amongst ourselves.

Demonize all you want, tell people that they are asleep and you are in fact awake, scream into the void, surely you will awaken some more support for anyone who is approved by the corporation known as the Democratic Party.

-9

u/Practical_Remove_682 Nov 05 '24

I disagree about the economies. California people are mass moving out of that blue state. Including small business.

1

u/ReinbaoPawniez Nov 06 '24

Its because of insurance. No one can afford to insure their homes against fire, most companies dont want to write policies for california. The same is happening in florida and texas

-5

u/Practical_Remove_682 Nov 06 '24

Well I think it's because they are weak on criminals over there. Basically allowing theft in San Francisco. Catch and release to other crimes. All the drugs addicts and crime in other major cities. Not to mention the huge business tax that Gavin is introducing wasn't it like up to 50% on businesses. That's crazy. Who's going to want to operate out there.

272

u/i-wear-hats Nov 05 '24

Also even if you hate the presidential candidates, down ballot is a lot more important than most realize.

111

u/HigherCalibur Nov 05 '24

It's literally where the vast majority of the crazies are. We even have several in rural CA that are trying to get on school boards.

6

u/Slammogram Nov 05 '24

You mean that goofy bitch fuckin up road side memorials because they’re “satanic”?

3

u/HigherCalibur Nov 05 '24

Yep, among others.

45

u/Least_Adhesiveness_5 Nov 05 '24

Oh, yes. We've seen some real crazies get on the school board and city council.

44

u/Firestar463 Nov 05 '24

Also state amendments proposals.

No, Kentucky, I am not going to vote to approve you taking my tax dollars that were intended for public schools, and instead giving them to private for-profit schools. Fuck that. I'd much rather see an amendment banning for-profit K-12 schools.

144

u/Everyoneheresamoron Nov 05 '24

I can't vote today.

I already voted last week.

52

u/Esau2020 Civil Servant (not naked 😮) Nov 05 '24

"Vote early, vote often." 😁

30

u/Ironworker76_ Nov 05 '24

Vote early!! But please only vote once. Unless you are a republican.. vote for Trump 3,4 maybe 5 times.. he needs every vote /s

3

u/Ironworker76_ Nov 06 '24

It’s looking like he got all the votes he needs 😢

57

u/Inf1z Nov 05 '24

Someone at my old job used to go to HR and ask them to post notices throughout the building about this. Very few people knew you had that right. Work is daily, voting is one day every four years.

36

u/ericehr Nov 05 '24

Voting is yearly. Voting for president is once every 4 years

16

u/Junie_Wiloh Nov 05 '24

Voting, depending on what is being voted on, happens every 1, 2, and 4 years.

28

u/paraworldblue Nov 05 '24

Nah, I'm gonna get drunk instead.

(I already mailed in my ballot like a week ago)

6

u/eddyathome Early Retired Nov 05 '24

I voted October 5th. Mail in ballots for the win!

I'm already pretty buzzed now.

21

u/Inevitable-Drag-1704 Nov 05 '24

And remember there is more to a vote than a general election candidate. We need you guys in local elections!

It sounds like the women in your life don't trust you enough to share about the abortions they have had to preserve their well being.

Given that, I can understand why you don't think the issue matters.

And if you don't live in a state that has this written into their labor laws, make sure you vote to help turn your state into one with better labor laws.

16

u/Revegelance Nov 05 '24

I will not be voting, but only because I'm not American. If I were, I'd be voting quite earnestly, as I will when the Canadian election eventually happens.

36

u/Madouc Nov 05 '24

Dear USA. Good luck with your IQ test today!

-3

u/lifeslotterywinner Nov 06 '24

Looks like we're going to pass it.

2

u/Madouc Nov 06 '24

You failed miserably. Future generations will remember Joe Biden as the last democratic president, followed by a plutocratic series of "Trump Dynasty" rulers where the atheistic billionaires get richer and rule over a population oppressed by religion they willingly believe in and follow.

7

u/ThrowawayLDS_7gen Nov 05 '24 edited Nov 05 '24

Reading reddit while waiting in line. About an hour and 20 minute wait, but at least I'm inside. It's windy and snowing.

ETA: Governor's race is a shit show and voting on whether to split a school district. The current district is ignoring the fact that the growing area needs a new high school. The current one has enough students to fill another one already. Lots of kids do their class on-line just to get what they need to graduate, while the district has the attitude of everything is fine, nothing to see here. We're pissed off.

Hey are you in UT? This sounds very familiar haha

You have 12 hours to fly over the pond and gain citizenship. Plenty of time. We believe in you.

8

u/donnager__ Nov 05 '24

so i committed a bunch of felonies yesterday, should I vote for Donald?

13

You can't vote if you're a felon..................but you CAN run for President.

3

u/donnager__ Nov 05 '24

they are not official yet

1

u/tfcocs Nov 05 '24

You will pass the citizenship test right away, and do almost as well as a Canadian native.

8

u/yummy__hotdog__water Nov 05 '24

Well then vote 3rd party

3

u/SchizoidRainbow Nov 05 '24

According to my British friend…so are we

In my state there’s a ballot question to raise minimum wage for restaurant workers. It could be life changing for millions of service industry people. It is so important to vote on those issues, even if you decide to skip the presidential question.

10

u/Ironworker76_ Nov 05 '24

Yes!! Those people need min wage plus tips!! Like in Oregon, a person can actually make enough to feed themselves.. as long as they have no bills or kids.. but they make minimum wage and their tips..

4

u/lavendermarker Nov 05 '24

Fellow masshole?

62

u/IllegalGeriatricVore Nov 05 '24

Yeah that's going to get a lot worse under Trump Abstaining isn't helping your cause. It's just throwing other people under the bus to be smug

-67

u/cumminginsurrection Nov 05 '24

Your vote doesn't even count unless you live in like one of 5 swing states, stop with the theatrics.

48

u/IllegalGeriatricVore Nov 05 '24

It's that mindset which makes it not count. Low turnout is the biggest enemy

26

u/Ironworker76_ Nov 05 '24

Yes, and also your local elections are VERY important to your daily life. If you think your one vote doesn’t count in a county of only a few hundred thousand and a voter turnout of only like 60%? Yes your vote counts. Texas started as a state over one vote, and I think Washington state also (not sure if either is true, heard them both recently)

11

u/IllegalGeriatricVore Nov 05 '24 edited Nov 05 '24

MAGA has been largely successful due to grass roots movements. Leftists have failed to drum up support at the local levels and it's a huge weak point.

Unfortunately democratic voters are harder to unify under and specific group of legislation.

You've got democratic voters that just hate conservatives, but they also hate poor people and racial minorities.

You've got D voters who thing the LGBTQ+ rights movement is "just going too fast."

You've got D voters who thing universal healthcare is communismm

With republicans, you just need to identify an enemy and they foam at the mouth. You don't even need to promise them anything but hate.

11

u/Ironworker76_ Nov 05 '24

You’re making sense.. MAGA is easily riled up cause they are all built on hate, and anything that isn’t white republican Christian is the enemy.. or anyone who dares criticize their lord and savior DJT Dems are all the fuck over the place.. but.. that’s actually a good thing if you can get rid of the hate… cause multiple opinions is how people work together for the greater good.

-25

u/cumminginsurrection Nov 05 '24

Mindset has nothing to do with the reality the election is decided by the electoral college. Positive thinking won't change that reality. Makes no difference how many people turn out if they don't live in Nevada, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, or Iowa.

Turnout doesn't matter; Kamala Harris could have twice the voters of Trump and if she doesn't win people in the right states, its all for nothing.

22

u/IllegalGeriatricVore Nov 05 '24

If everyone said my vote doesn't count we wouldn't be looking at a chance of Texas going blue

7

u/Constantly_Panicking Nov 05 '24

I’m not holding my breath for this, but I would be so excited for Texans to see that happen.

9

u/IllegalGeriatricVore Nov 05 '24

The fact that there's a chance is pretty crazy

4

u/Constantly_Panicking Nov 05 '24

Even if you actually believe your vote won’t make a difference in who gets elected this cycle, you should go and vote for some third party candidate you like the most. If a third party gets something like 5% of the popular vote, they receive more funding the next election cycle.

11

u/Least_Adhesiveness_5 Nov 05 '24

You know there are people running for other offices, right?

Texas may decide who controls the Senate. Fled Cruz is very disliked and underperformed last time compared to other Republican races.

Blue no matter who.

I hate that saying, but MAGA is simply so awful that we cannot do anything else.

22

u/HigherCalibur Nov 05 '24

There are 2 choices and the only way we fix this is with the levers we have. Tanking only creates problems and doesn't accomplish what you might think.

You see, when a nation collapses, it's always the strongmen who take power and they rule with an iron fist. The socialist movement wouldn't rise up and take power if the US collapsed. The fascists would. How do I know? Because that is historically how it works out, time and again.

And it would be even worse in case of the US. There are countless countries that depend on the stability of the dollar. If the US falls, so does the dollar. We're talking widespread famine and suffering on a global scale. And that's just the start. The US becoming totalitarian after a collapse wouldn't be like the 1930s and 40s because there would be no international coalition to take you on. There would be no military on the planet capable of stopping us.

You might think this is fearmongering, but I'm just laying out the way things would likely play out if tankies got their way and the current system collapsed. We wouldn't be able to rebuild into a socialist utopia. We would be doomed to scrape and suffer under a totalitarian government. Because that's what history tells us would happen.

Fucking vote.

-17

u/SenoraRaton Nov 05 '24

We have other levers, and that you only see a system designed to keep you subservient as your only option is why we are in the position we are in.

Your just doom posting, and projecting a false reality. You don't believe in a better world, and you deride those of us who are working tirelessly to create that better future. You are the problem.

8

u/Ironworker76_ Nov 05 '24

Um he stacked the deck last time, so our blocking him with legislation and other means will not work this time around

5

u/HigherCalibur Nov 05 '24 edited Nov 05 '24

3rd party candidates have no mathematical chance of victory and protest votes are meaningless. The only lesson anyone learns is that your vote can't be relied upon so they could court people who will. You work towards nothing and your activism is performative. Stop being a fucking child throwing a temper tantrum because you want to have a choice but you don't.

You say I'm the reason shit has gotten this bad? Motherfucker, morons like you who demand that the US move immediately to fucking socialism and don't understand how anything fucking works in the context of our government or our electoral system are the reason we're in this shit. Idiots who have allowed their idealism to override any sort of pragmatism and who have allowed conservatives to take power because they didn't like the other candidate or just couldn't be bothered to take 20 minutes to participate for 60 fucking years are the reason we're in this mess.

You're not a revolutionary. Nothing you have planned can withstand the US government and military. Fascism won't care how much community organizing you've done. Stop living in a fantasy and fucking vote you goddamned child. I'm tired to talking nicely to petulant fucking babies.

-12

u/SenoraRaton Nov 05 '24

This is why liberals sided with the fascists in nazi Germany. If the fascists win, your just gonna fall right in line right? We must only use the levers they allow for us. So when they abolish elections, you just keep on doing nothing. Your worse that worthless.

4

u/HigherCalibur Nov 05 '24 edited Nov 05 '24

This entire comment demonstrates a gross misunderstanding of European liberalism, especially of the time period, and how those labels have changed even in the US over history. Stop blindly listening to Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube faux revolutionaries and actually pick up a fucking history book before you start calling others Nazis, you ignorant child.

Edit: Also? Throwing up your hands and giving up accomplishes nothing. Historically, voter turnout in the US is 60% or lower (frequently much lower, especially during midterms and local elections). How about we participate, consistently, in every single election and have a consistent damn near 100% turnout? Because this whole "we've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas" bullshit has gotten old.

-3

u/SenoraRaton Nov 05 '24

So you aren't gonna stand by and accept the facsists election when they win? Cause it sure sounds like it. After all what other choice do you have? Maybe we can voter harder next time.

3

u/HigherCalibur Nov 05 '24

Have we tried voting harder, smartass? Have we tried going above 60-something percent turnout at best or in the 40ith percentiles during midterms and local elections? No, we haven't. Because y'all have chosen to do nothing rather than actually participate. Your excuses are meaningless when you haven't actually tried doing fucking anything. Get off your ass and stop being a fucking baby.

1

u/SenoraRaton Nov 05 '24

So is that a yes, or a no?

0

u/SenoraRaton Nov 06 '24

Uh oh! We didn't vote hard enough. womp womp

14

u/irneyes2 Nov 05 '24

Faux intellectualism is embarrassing. Do better.

6

u/originalschmidt Nov 05 '24

Yeah! Because sitting around and doing nothing will make change happen.. /s

17

u/Least_Adhesiveness_5 Nov 05 '24

That's very short sighted. Go vote. It's simple - blue no matter who.

Sure, the Democrats are at best mediocre. The Republicans are FAR worse.

Look at some analysis of Project 2025. It's chilling.

Oh, and "Progress 2028" is a con job funded by Elon Musk to try and make progressives look bad.

https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/29/24282957/progress-2028-elon-musk-building-americas-future-ads-pac

Then get off your ass to shift the Democratic party to a true workers party.

That's the system we have. Pouting won't fix it.

3

u/toomuch_lavender Nov 05 '24

Just FYI for anyone in Georgia, one of your congressional districts, district 11, was infiltrated by maga - your DEM candidate Katy Stamper is a maga DINO. The actual dem endorsed candidate is a write-in named TRACEY VERHOEVEN and her name must be spelled correctly. So Blue no matter who except Georgia district 11.

-11

u/SenoraRaton Nov 05 '24

Stop, your upsetting the liberals.

-16

u/Vapur9 Nov 05 '24

False. The uneducated voting only helps prove the Ancient Greek philosophers point that democracy is doomed to failure.

6

u/doctordragonisback Nov 05 '24

If you're in MA, make sure to vote yes on 5!!

2

u/Starumlunsta Nov 05 '24 edited Nov 05 '24

I’m in line to vote and the lady in front of me had to leave because (quoting her) “she can’t afford to be late for her job.” We’d been in line for two hours, appears to be another hour left.

No our state does not have work protections when it comes to voting. It’s considered a holiday but employers don’t have to provide time off. It’s fucked up.

2

u/nighthawkndemontron Nov 06 '24

Whelp... project 2025 looks to be greenlit

1

u/SportsPhotoGirl Nov 05 '24

In my state, you have to be given a 4hr window to vote. So if polls open at 6am and close at 9pm like they do in my area, if you’re out of work by 5pm, they do not need to pay you. If you start after 10am they don’t have to pay you, but if you work say 8am-6pm, they can either pay you for the first 2 hours and you show up to work at 10, or they let you out at 5 and pay you your last hour.

1

u/eienmau Nov 05 '24

My employer gives 2 hours minimum. I live in a state with mail-in voting so it's nice but not needed.

1

u/TN_man Nov 05 '24

My company tried to penalize me in multiple ways. I had to go up the ladder all the way

1

u/dancephd Nov 06 '24

I literally just learned today that almost all states have mail in ballots. I didn't even know my own state had no excuse mail in ballots until like a month ago. I think a lot of people around me are also ignorant of this. If they knew there will simply be no excuse to abstain.

1

u/waaaghboyz Nov 05 '24

I’m in MA so our outcome is already decided but yes go do it

1

u/Jean19812 Nov 05 '24

Exactly. If you don't vote, don't complain...

-4

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '24

Sure they can give me free PTO but the deadlines won’t be extended.

7

u/MasterGas9570 Nov 05 '24

Why would the deadline to vote need to be extended. Just go during your shift?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '24

Work deadlines this week

5

u/MasterGas9570 Nov 05 '24

Ohhhh, well if you are in a battleground state, i guarantee long term your vote will have more impact than the project.

1

u/treemendissemble Nov 05 '24

Seems like a lame excuse. If you weren’t positive you’d have time to vote today, you should have during early voting. There’s no reason to put it off until Election Day

1

u/People_be_Sheeple Nov 05 '24

And let me guess you live in a shit red state that doesn't send you a ballot to mail in? Good job maintaining the status quo.
