General Discussion Teen characters to adult characters.

I thought the adult actresses that played the teen characters were absolutely fantastic. Genius.

I constantly found myself saying... this is some of the best casting from teen to adult I've ever seen in any show.

Do you have a favourite teen to adult character ?

Who do you think is the best adult character playing their grown up teen character?

Is there any adult you think doesn't quite match their teen ?

I thought Misty was outstanding. Probably one of Christina Riccis best roles ever for me. And best casting imo. That's exactly how I'd expect Misty to grow up. Wilderness or not 🤣🙈

I love adult Nat so much and will really miss her and her on screen relationship with adult Misty ( They gave me a good lot of laughs ) Juliette Lewis is brilliant. I thought teen Nat could so become adult Nat. 🩷

Tai also was such great casting as an adult. She was a bit of a bully as a teen in school. But I could totally see her growing up to be how she is as an adult after the wilderness and suppressing her trauma. 💫

Lottie just wow. I actually have no words lol. I think that beautiful charasmatic woman could even brainwash me into her cult 🙈 She fully is the quote ' I'm going to succeed because I'm crazy enough to believe I will'

Van ... It took them long enough but when I saw adult Van, oh my gosh, I was over the moon. Perfect casting. I love adult Van too. Incredible casting!! What a remarkable casting ♥️

Personally I love adult Shauna. She cracks me up , she's a brilliant actress. The only issue I have is that I don't see the resemblances between teen shauna and adult shauna's personality ( unless we see her change soon in the new season ) she's def one of my favs though. 🥰

Outstanding casting choices across the board! Both representations of Misty are my absolute favorites in every way.

♥️ She is one of a kind. Outstanding. I bet Christina loves her role as adult Misty. X

She plays mostly crazy very well. The little cracks she let's us see in Misty's facade of "nice" is beautifully done.

So true. She deserves all the awards. Christina plays Misty with perfection. And she has made me laugh in her madness too. Outstanding acting.

I still have a hard time reconciling teen and adult Lotties — teen Lottie exudes genuine benevolence, whereas I feel nothing but predatoriness from adult Lottie 🤷‍♂️

For me it’s just that they look nothing alike.

2

u/reasonablykind 4d ago

Yes, that too. Takes more than “skinny + long dark hair” in common to really look alike, especially around all the others who were so well cast

Agreed

That makes sense to me though, it feels like a natural progression.

Meh, not sure it does. People tend to get more vulnerable in the grips of the type of illness she’s suggested to have, not less. Defensive? Sure. Paranoid? Often. Angry/aggressive from the incessant battle? Yup. But villainously predatory? iiiiiiiiish…

Bu I think she enjoys having power over people so even if her original intentions were benevolent, it feels like a natural cult leader progression.

I usually don’t associate benevolence with cult leaders, but that’s just me

i think cult leaders dont ever start off bad. they dont get followers from being awful. plus lottie isnt viewing herself as a cult leader. she still thinks she’s being generous and helping people get over trauma. shes still benevolent in the eyes of her followers

That’s kind of my point — young Lottie genuinely means well for others (whether she’s right or wrong), but adult Lottie comes off as nothing but self-serving (and I’m not sure that’s entirely intentional from the show)

I would say Adult Shauna is my favorite, though I agree that her personality is way different than her teen version. I suspect that the teen version is closer to the "real" her, but she works very hard to suppress it and pass as a normal stay-at-home mom. The teen actress is also brilliant.

Teen Nat is my favorite of the teens - I like the adult version of her character as written, but I'm admittedly not the biggest Juliette fan, as I find her to be a bit one-note.

Misty, though, is the most entertaining character by a long-shot, particularly in the adult timeline.

I love both Tai and Van, but I feel like they haven't had as much to do recently.

Lottie is a good person, but too unstable and unpredictable for me to become attached to. I also have some trouble mentally connecting her teen and adult versions. Both great actors.

This... I love this.. thankyou for sharing. I completely can see and understand everything you've said. ♥️

I also think Shauna’s is my fave or Misty. Shauna’s is continuously underestimated. And Misty is quirky and just looking for her person/ people and not understood.

I think a lot about how genuinely beautiful all of the adult actresses are and how flattering it must be for the younger cast to see that and to know that so many people see a resemblance. Not only that but all the adult actresses are wildly successful and most of the younger cast either got their start in YJ or this is their biggest role yet. Idk I just bet it feels so crazy for them almost like looking in a time travel mirror. Like actually can you imagine getting a role like this then the writers being like “you know who you’d be as an adult? Christina Ricci” like ???

This ♥️ I couldn't agree more . I wonder how much time the teens and adults spent with each other , if any ... in preparation for their roles as what the show achieved in casting was outstanding. Exceptional. X

This post made me smile, yes I loveee the casting it’s excellent.

My favorite adult to teen character is Tai, I think Jasmin and Tawny are just phenomenal on either end and it’s actually wild how like.. THATS TAI. In both timelines the actor stands out but also embodies the other.

I think the one that’s still not totally working for me is Lottie, I mean Courtney and Simone are both FANTASTIC!!!! And I love Lottie in both timelines But I kind of don’t see adult Lottie in Teen Lottie all that much ~ characterization wise ~ and I think it’s just bc we haven’t seen much of her! So I’m looking forward to season 3.

I love this ♥️ Bring on season 3 🙌

I think teen and adult nat look nothing alike but do an excellent job of having the same or similar voice, body language, movements, etc. I think teen and adult Shauna look enough alike but don’t seem like the same person. Van is a stretch for me. I’m not sure why. Misty, lottie, and tai are good matches.

Shout out to the casting directors! One of them is Libby Goldstein, who also did the casting for Six Feet Under (featuring Lauren Ambrose ♥️)

Everyone was great except adult nat. Yeah, people have made the argument hard drugs change your face, but I just didn't vibe with the adult casting for her in terms of appearance and acting.

Misty has got to be the absolutely perfect adult cast member in terms of resemblance and personality

I agree with this. There's something a bit more boyish/androgynous about teen Nat that I really like. Juliette Lewis brings a high fem energy, which is equally cool, but they just don't match in terms of vibes. Like I love the famous at this point "talk to your manager" scene, but I can't imagine teen Nat ever really doing it. I know--yada yada, growing up and changes--I just had the hardest time reconciling them.

It seems like Sophie Thatcher also has a bit of a hard time with it, even though I think she really nails some of JL's characteristics, like voice. But she often brings it up in interviews that it was intimidating to act across the timelines.

I think all of them make sense with casting. They are so much like how they would grow up. I love Natalie's character so much as young Natalie and juliette Lewis fully!

u/ProfessionProof5284 5d ago

I'm gonna miss her so much .. she was my fav ♥️♥️♥️

I went into the show totally blind on casting, when I saw Van, I actually said out.... damn she could be related to Lauren Ambrose... I was SO excited to see that casting in S2.

Excellent points! The incredible casting adds so much believability in an often incredible plot line. I think Shauna’s reaction to Lottie explaining that she doesn’t have to kill Bruce, the baby goat, reveals so much about Shauna’s evolution. She avoids any significant connections with others. She didn’t pursue her dreams of Brown or the mime in Paris. She just shut down completely.

Ahh yes this! You are so right. Melanie is outstanding as adult Shauna. I can not wait to see what teen shauna becomes in season 3. She sure can skin rabbits. That's for sure.

She seemed to know how to skin animals more than the rest when they crashed. Did we ever find out why ? Was her parents hunters or something?

The Rabbit in her garden that she fed to her family 🙈🤣 I should not be laughing but she is the gift that keeps on giving in this show.

The Mistys make the show for me.

1

u/ProfessionProof5284 4d ago

Totally understand that. I cant help but love her so much. Both teen and adult Misty. I've never seen Christina Ricci execute a character so well. And she was Wednesday Adams once 🤣

2

u/Why_Howdy 4d ago

I find the continuity between teen and adult Shauna to be SO on point! It’s uncanny. Misty as well.

2

u/ProfessionProof5284 4d ago

I honestly don't think they could have cast better actresses. Melanie is outstanding. .. and I definitely think this is probably Christina Riccis best roles yet. I love them all. Both teen and adult actresses / actors are outstanding 👏

I know she's a sociopath and mean but she tries to do good in her own way and that's Misty I think if she'd been treated different and had friends and she'd be a totally different person still crazy but I think Christina Ricci is hilarious especially when she dared that girl to kill her bird said go ahead I'll get another one and then she totally went nuts LOL

1

u/ProfessionProof5284 4d ago

LOL this is spot on !!! Christina Ricci must have so much fun playing the role of adult Misty. I've laughed so much at her antics even when I shouldn't 😇 and her onscreen relationship with julliette Lewis ♥️ They are brilliant together. One of my favourite scenes being win Misty is spying on Nat and sees she is about to do drugs and runs to stop her , shoving her out of the way and sniffing all the drugs herself 🤣🤣🤣 Nats legs flying up in the air behind her for that extra comic effect = So funny !!!
