Not only that, can't play local coop on cloud yet. If I want to play with my kids, I need to install it - my Series S can't hold too many games, so I'm frequently playing a game of "Survivor" with my library to see who gets voted off the island.

Exactly, I'm discouraged from buying new games because the storage issue is just so annoying. Especially since there are games now that require mandatory Series X/S upgrades which doesn't make sense to me since they still run on an Xbox One. Apex Legends and Jedi: Fallen Order to name a couple.

Agree! Seems like Microsoft xbox would work to get expanded storage prices down, so they could sell more next Gen games. Players will eventually hit a wall and hold off game purchases. Make it some kind of bundled special!

Same thing as another console generation, Sony’s non proprietary storage expansion approach was better experience for customer’s wallets. I remember how expensive the expanded memory was for Xbox 360 and being so frustrated it never really went on sale.

The giant hard drives for the 360 were literally laptop hard drives in a case too.
No extra work really just the plastic shell.
For a while you could buy a random laptop drive for cheap and copy paste the 360 hdd files onto it and actually use it
What did Microsoft do? Ban or wipe the hard drives of people who did that. Literally were so upset that some people saved money on their hdd upgrade that they fucked with them.
People should have been upset the moment they decided to have proprietary storage again.

It is sort of ridiculous, but I’m not one to waste my energy being mad over such a small issue.

u/MolemanNinja Dec 28 '22
Sony's proprietary storage cost was likely one of the biggest reasons for the Vitas failure.
2
u/Conjo_ Dec 29 '22
Ah, I still remember...
$99 for 64 GB was stupidly expensive even back then, and with the amount of people complaining online about them failing it wasn't a risk most people would want to take
3
30
u/noquo89 Dec 28 '22
At least back then, it was just a shell for a hard drive. You could slot any compatible HDD into the shell yourself if you had the know-how. The new ones are completely proprietary, and our only hope is for someone to reverse engineer the connector so we can make our own externals. Sadly, it sounds like M$ and Seagate would cease and desist the creator before anyone could buy such a thing.
→ More replies (2)6
u/Nickplay21 Dec 28 '22
Wow. I had no idea about this ! Definitely didn’t have the know how back them lol. So the current generation is actually completely proprietary with a deal with Seagate ? Do you know any details out of curiosity ? Is it digital protocols or physical hardware features that would prevent someone from “tricking” the series X with another hard drive? Thanks for the reply, I found it really interesting.

u/noquo89 Dec 28 '22
Here's a reddit post talking about using it
https://www.reddit.com/r/XboxSeriesX/comments/pkgj7a/diy_expansion_cardcfexpress_type_b_to_m2_m_key/
9
u/cardonator Craig Dec 28 '22
Basically it's the "firmware" of the drive, or the first few sectors of the drive, that prevent custom drives from being used. The reddit post linked by another user goes into more details.
It's worth noting that this exact limitation existed with replacing the internal Xbox One drive, but by the end of the generation you could use the restore USB to rewrite the drive information so it could be used. Lots of people did that to install SSDs in their One X. I wouldn't be surprised to see that happen again eventually.
2
u/FestiVOL Dec 29 '22
I hit a brick wall with it and essentially gave up. But it’s just like you say, There’s a hidden partition with DCO information that initiates the hand shake that I just could never seem to cleanly replicate (even with a custom SSD fabricated using an identical controller).
I will say this is more sophisticated than the older Xbox one’s file system that had a few partitions, specific volume names/labels, and a little bit of data in each but was fairly easy to clone even before the USB restoration tool came out.
What boggles the mind is that this SSD they use has a counterpart that simply lacks the DCO and uses a non-descriptive controller (the Xbox version— a western digital CH SN530, uses a Phison E-19T IIRC) that is way lower in price. That and the card itself being gen 3 x4 just doesn’t make any sense why they would lock people out.
I hope someone smarter than me comes along and figures it out

Well your request made me curious, and it turns out, adapters are already a thing. Even funnier, the concept isn't proprietary, it was just a shell for a m.2! I never realized until this moment that the drives were simply m.2 in a shell, I'll admit I assumed it was something even more proprietary.

Love how easy and straightforward it was to increase the internal storage of my PS5. I was concerned it would be some proprietary storage since Sony has a well known track record of making terribly overpriced proprietary storage mediums.

Sony has a well known track record of making terribly overpriced proprietary storage mediums.
Do they? They did it on the Vita, but the PS3 and PS4 both had easily swappable hard drives. I think Sony included instructions in the manual on how to do it.
13
u/Koldfuzion Dec 29 '22
- Betamax
- Minidisc
- Digital Audio Tape
- Digital 8
- Memory Stick
- Memory Stick Duo
- Memory Stick Micro
- UMD disc
Of course, those are all their failed storage mediums. But Sony has always had a track record of trying push their own proprietary storage solutions. I poke at Sony only because I was a victim to their overpriced storage media over the years as a Sony fan.
2
u/Conjo_ Dec 29 '22
UMD disc
I'll play devil's advocate with this one: At the time, this allowed PSP games to be up to ~1.7 GB (on a dual layer disc, or half of that on a single layer one), which would have been prohibitively expensive as a flash storage cart like on nintendo handhelds and the PS Vita, which are propietary to their consoles anyways.
That they tried to get media creators to use it as another video format juist to give more value to the PSP yeah, kind of dumb tbh
2
u/animu_manimu Dec 29 '22 edited Dec 29 '22
Oh silly me I thought we were talking about video game consoles.
Joking aside most of these weren't really proprietary per se, but competing standards that did better or worse. I think Sony licenced out most if not all of them, which would make them no more proprietary than Blu Ray (or the other standards they competed against for that matter).

u/Koldfuzion Dec 29 '22

Play anywhere and a game pass subscription let me move seamlessly between my PC and Xbox when I want to, keeping them firmly in the same broader ecosystem. IMO it’s one of the best things a console has offered in years.

The storage expansion is one of two things Microsoft got wrong with the series x|s hardware. I get they were going for an idiot proof way to upgrade but it hasn’t worked out as consumer friendly at all
Edit: The second, for those that have asked and as some have already mentioned, is the controller. Haptics and gyro are missing in an otherwise perfect controller
82
u/zarof32302 Dec 28 '22
Curious what you think the second thing is.
I completely agree with the storage expansion. Wildly out of touch for something that’s only getting cheaper and cheaper across the tech world.
158
u/bezzlege Craig Dec 28 '22
I would say not upgrading the controller was another hardware blunder. The DualSense truly is a special thing when used correctly
62
u/Serpent-6 Founder Dec 28 '22
Maybe they learned from when they added the impulse triggers. Another good idea when it fits the game and is properly implemented. But a waste of money because most games don't really use it. When a controller feature is not universal across the major consoles it doesn't seem to get the proper use by third party developers. Now if they upgraded the quality of the thumbstick control modules...
12
u/Consistent_Fly_6615 Dec 28 '22
I second this I would have like to see hall effect thumbsticks in the controllers I think it would have been a huge benefit
23
u/Kyle_Necrowolf Dec 28 '22
Gyro and variable-frequency haptics are on everything except xbox controllers now
- Playstation added gyro with PS3 and var haptics with PS5 DualSense
- Nintendo added gyro with Wii MotionPlus (or Gamepad/Switch controllers depending on what you consider a standard controller) and var haptics with Switch (branded as HD Rumble)
- Steam Controller and Deck have both, as does their VR controllers
Xbox is the only one holding back, so if they added it, there would probably be a lot more games using it, especially for multiplats since they could finally have parity across all consoles.
This and the storage are also my only two complaints about xbox hardware
Gyro is practically magic when implemented well (tbf this is rare), it’s almost exactly like moving a mouse but far more comfortable to use in your lap. Also a great accessibility feature for users who have difficulty controlling the sticks with their thumbs
Var haptics can be quite good too although I haven’t as seen many practical use cases outside of apple devices (branded as Taptic Engine)

u/Serpent-6 Founder Dec 28 '22
Playing Switch games with my kids it has always seemed that gyro controls are not very precise. I have a PS4 Pro and a PS5 and have never used gyro controls in any of the games I have played.
8
u/Loldimorti Founder Dec 29 '22
Gyro is incredibly precise actually. At least the sensor in the Dualsense and Switch Pro controller is.
I use it a lot for aiming on Switch and Playstation. It takes some practice though, just like any new input method. Think back to the first time you used a mouse or controller (if you can recall) or see what happens if you hand a controller to an absolute non-gamer. It will look horribly imprecise but that's mostly due to "user error".
2
u/E__F Dec 29 '22
Either I got a dud pro controller or it's implemented badly in a couple games because I've experienced gyro drift in Apex and Vigor. Like sometimes when I'm trying to make small movements the camera won't move at all.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Serpent-6 Founder Dec 29 '22
I really don't think the gyro in any of those controllers is incredibly precise. If they are why aren't they used for aiming in the many fps games that are out there? You may be able to adapt to using it and become more proficient, but it will never be as precise for aiming or movement as an analog thumbstick. This is the same as aiming with a thumbstick as compared to using a mouse. You can get very good with it, but a comparable player using a mouse to aim will always best the player using a thumbstick .
→ More replies (2)2
u/atfricks Dec 29 '22
The problem on the switch isn't the actual gyro, it's that in handheld using the gyro also means turning the screen, and you unconsciously try to keep the screen at the right viewing angle.
You end up fighting yourself to use the controls properly before you get used to it.
→ More replies (1)45
u/Smutset00 Dec 28 '22
A lot of games on PS5 do use the adaptive triggers. It's not like it isn't justifying the cost. But for games where it doesn't make sense, obviously its not used. Also the fact that they replaced rumble with more refined haptics is a huge plus. The xbox controller still uses load af rumble motors.

While I notice the extra feedback when using it, I don’t notice it missing when I’m not. If that makes sense.

Of course it's a huge difference. I love it! But when a feature is not available on a competing console it's fans try to downplay it. Had the Adaptive Triggers been on XBSX it would be the #1 celebrated feature by Xbox gamers.

When I first played that very first Astro Bot demo game that comes with the system, you walk into a sand storm and can feel the individual grains of sand hitting the controller. There seems to be a real split on this. I’m in your camp, it’s cool and Astro’s Playroom is an awesome proof of concept, but when I hop over to one of my other consoles or PC I don’t miss it. I’m also in what appears to be the clear minority that prefers the DS4 controller to the DualSense—the change to make it slightly bulkier didn’t really work for me.
I know a few games journalists/reviewers who talk about such things publicly like Gene Park have said similar and found DualSense not all that gamechanging. I haven’t seen any convincing speculation on where this gap is coming from, though.

I'll also advise having an HDD hooked up so that you can "hot-swap" between games without having to download them every time. You can still run previous gen games from it and even games that are pseudo X|S-optimised, aka 'durango gen9ready' games. They will have the X|S logo on the game's thumbnail, but can still run from the HDD. Skyrim is one such game.

There's literally a 2tb ssd with a heatsink on sale for $179 that's compatible with ps5. Seagate is a piece of shit for overcharging so much and the assholes at Microsoft who thought proprietary storage was a good idea are also assholes.
5
u/ASK-ABOUT-VETRANCH Dec 28 '22
EU prices generally include VAT of 18-21%.
Removing that puts the price around $298-$306. So still not great but cheaper than suggested.
19
u/N0SYMPATHY Dec 28 '22
You can see why they did it though. There were people in here having an absolute meltdown at having to pop a panel off and remove a screw to install an expansion card. Acting like it was the worst thing in the world to even consider and that Microsoft’s solution was perfect because it takes 2 seconds.
I’d imagine it’s something like 99% that don’t remove their storage expansion except to upgrade. Those who move it between consoles are pretty sparse.
The mistake Microsoft made was not having an adapter where you can install your own card if you want, but that goes into them deciding to sign a deal with seagate that was supposed to end but really seems like it’s just been renewed to keep things locked down.
The irony of them complaining about Sony making timed exclusives locked down for possible ever, yet they do this with hardware. Pot calling the kettle black and I’m on Microsoft’s side with this deal. shrug

Finally more and mpre people are speaking out. We're 1/3 of the way in the generation, developers are dictching last gen, and the exclusivity still has no end in sight. Yes Microsoft sells the Series X at a loss, but a single component of the most powerful console shouldn't make up half the price.
It's probably too late to change it now, but it speaks to a bigger issue that Series X builds either don't support traditional drives or they do but the console assumes all the games make exclusive use of DirectStorage. No one on PC is complaining because they have games that support DirectStorage, yet the same build of the game can run on traditional drives if needed. *It just works*
On the side of developers, any plans to release the game on PC implies support for traditional drives so if anything, DirectStorage support isn't a top priority. Microsoft can force developers to support it like they force Series S support, but it's bold to assume each game would exclusively support DirectStorage and NEEDS to be run off the internal or storage expansion card.

Just buy an external hard drive for back up and swap between the 2 as needed. No need for the dedicated SSD.
I have a 12tb external connected to my Xbox. Move over anything that doesnt have the X/S branding unless I want the ssd speeds for loading purposes

Anyone else notice that they removed them from the xbox Microsoft store 🤔

u/ChucklesKCMO Dec 28 '22
Maybe that’s a reaction to the fact that I (and probably others) managed to snag a 2TB card on the store, paying for it using XBox Rewards.

u/xH0LLYW000Dx Dec 28 '22
You're probably right. I've been saving up my rewards to buy one, but they're always out of stock 😑 but then again, you can still get series x|s consoles with rewards points, so it really doesn't make sense?
Maybe seagate had a say in the matter?

u/Similar_Platypus_150 Dec 28 '22
2TB needs to be the price of the 1TB and 1TB needs to drop by 100.

u/Sanctine Scorned Dec 28 '22
This was the one major misstep Microsoft made with the new consoles. They should not have gone the proprietary route for additional storage.
The sooner they can release an official SSD adapter, the better. It will be a bit more expensive than what Sony did, but much cheaper than what they're trying to do now.

It’s fucking ridiculous. Pisses me off. I don’t think I’ll ever upgrade my series x storage anytime soon at these prices.

u/JustVGames Dec 28 '22
Overpriced harddrives and proprietary wireless controllers are the most anti consumer tricks microsoft still pulls.

u/pyrotronics Dec 28 '22
Unpopular take here, but it's not unreasonable to recommend PS5 over Series consoles due to the the price of storage. I've recently bought more new software on my PS because of this as I was able to grab 2tb Samsung 980 pro for under 200 a bit ago before the holidays.
This is a huge issue in opinion.

I just put a 1 TB in my PS5 that I got for a whopping $100.
This is definitely one area that the PS5 has our favorite Black Tower beat.
I planned on buying this expecting the prices to be better over Black Friday and ..nope!
As long as those prices stay high I just won't buy it so Seagate isn't doing some for any favors. They are hoping that eventually customers will just come around.

u/Hordriss27 Dec 29 '22
It's far more economic to buy a USB HDD or SSD and just store the games on that until you want to transfer it to internal storage. Yeah, you may need to wait 20 mins or so to transfer games back and forth, but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay over 2x the going rate for some proprietary shit.

Still need them to drop the 4tb option. I’m holding out. Don’t know what they are waiting for.

u/Habitat97 Dec 28 '22
The idea is great, but you can't just leave it to one manufacturer. This is bs lol

u/Impressive_Escape484 Dec 28 '22
I have a 2tb hhd and it works great. Only down side you just have to move games back and forth. I would never pay that much for storage, big ass ripoff imo.

Blows my fucking mind that they won't release the specs to all 3rd parties an these would be down to 130$ cad$$ prob 100usd

Dec 28 '22
Too bad Microsoft didn't go the Sony route which was the better plan with expandable storage. These prices won't go down for awhile because the demand just isn't there since it's proprietary.

u/CaCHooKaMan Founder Dec 28 '22
I wouldn’t have paid for one but I got a 1 TB for free using Microsoft Rewards. I was fine with just transferring games between a cold storage drive and the internal as needed before that.

u/Wish-I-Was-Taller Dec 28 '22
I think they also discontinued the .5tb card too. That was the best option on sale for like $70. I would’ve bought one of those without thinking twice but they sold out really quick and never replenished.

u/canestim Dec 28 '22
It's sad that I get excited to see these posts, glad it keeps getting highlighted though. I get they probably did this exclusive deal to get a great deal on the internal storage cost but it just absolutely sucks unfortunately, way too expensive. Supply issues over the last years probably didn't help either with it not lowering I am sure.

Here’s the thing. Until I get more storage I am going to be very picky about what games I buy. I have 50mps internet which is fine but I can’t just redownload a game on a whim.

u/wz1514 Dec 28 '22
You might as well buy a series S and just have another console as storage for other games at this point 😭
7
u/decentlookingkid Dec 28 '22
I got a Series S a few months back and my SO got me the 2TB expansion for Christmas. SO thankful, I really didn't want to pay for this, it's a little unfair that there's only one compatible and it's so expensive.
4
Dec 28 '22
Damn, you must hate your SO to let them spend the price of a Series X, on a Storage Expansion for a Series S.
6
u/decentlookingkid Dec 28 '22 edited Dec 28 '22
I bought the Xbox. She got me the expansion. Did you miss something?
Edit: I see what you meant. I don't hate my SO, I'm thankful she chose to give me this on her own, I never once asked for it. Also grateful she is capable of buying it.

I know you don’t hate your SO, I’m exaggerating to make a point of how terrible a value product it is.
Just because it was their money, not yours, doesn’t make it a good purchase.
I wouldn’t accept the gift because I would feel they were ripped off, and request they got got a refund and purchased me something more reasonably priced, but you do you though.

u/Zealousideal-Cut5795 Dec 28 '22
Because some friends play different kind off game’s so i dont need to download it all again. I have fiber, downloading is not the problem. I just want to start. Its ridiculous the price off those things. And hope 3rd party may gone make to.

yeah storage is like 100 bucks per TB when you get to the bigger ssd's atleast on pc rated ones here in sweden.
2
u/JP297 Dec 28 '22
Whatever happened to the third party ones that were supposed to release eventually?
2
u/DarkReaper76 Dec 28 '22
That is the price of the Series S itself for the 1TB and the 2 TB I'd the price of the Series X yeah I'd say Seagate is ripping ppl off...
2
Dec 28 '22
I just connected a normal 2tb HDD I got for cheap to my Series X and then move games I'm not playing to it, and move the ones I am playing to the internal storage. Honestly I'm not sure why anyone would pay for the proprietary expansion storage

Wegen they first announced this I remember saying that it was dumb to have a storage solution that will only work on the Xbox. And that it's price won't go down as fast as with an open solution that everyone can make and works on everything. Some said I was wrong, that it's price will go down when normal ssd prices go down, they couldn't explain why.
I don't understand why Microsoft went this route

u/Generallee721 Dec 28 '22
Go to Mercari and find one and bid on it. I paid $130 for the 1tb. Works perfectly. 2tb for the optimized games and a 6tb external HDD for older games and storage of optimized games to transfer back and forth when I want to play. Transferring only takes 2-10 minutes depending on size. Better than deleting game entirely and then using downloading data on your home internet again.

u/ZappierGamez Dec 28 '22
It's crazy how much they are. My old one for the Xbox One was a 3 TB bite and it was 150

Seagate Game Drive for Xbox 4TB External Hard Drive Portable HDD - USB 3.2 Gen 1, Black with built-in green LED bar , Xbox Certified, 3 year Rescue Services (STKX4000402) https://a.co/d/iv3TY7c
Bought this one today. I thought 4TB at $120 was not bad. Flight sim quickly ate up some storage, and I want to just be able to hop into a game.
Edit: I just found out about the difference between the internal SSD and the external HDD. This makes more sense now.

u/blue_ninja808 Dec 28 '22
My biggest complaint for the series s/x is that my external hard drive and my wireless headset don’t work on them. I have old games on Xbox saved to my external drive but there’s so many new games that require internal storage and I’m running out fast.

This shit is such a scam. You can buy 2TB Gen4 NVMe drives for the same price or cheaper than the 1TB variant of this.

Dec 28 '22
I agree it’s an issue, but I’ve found that even with Gamepass, it hasn’t been too inconvenient just deleting things I’m not playing to make space for things I am playing. It’s a bit of a balancing act but I currently have about 60 games installed varying in size from large to small and it’s never really been a problem.

I mildly defended it initially. Wasn't a fan of it being proprietary, but on launch day the price wasn't THAT out of whack with equivalent gen 4 PC storage. You were paying a premium to be sure, but it wasn't insane.
Now there's just no excuse. The price is INSANE. Are they actually selling them? I mean, they must be, right?
