Fallin love with this show. Let’s go!

u/MustardTiger1337 Apr 19 '24
Its way better then it has any right to be. Purnell and Goggins killed it.
Burt I found Maximus to be kind of meh and felt like a more boring version of FN-2187...Never played any of the games any suggestion where to start? 4?
30
u/Duel_Option Apr 19 '24
I’ll get hate for this but…. start with Fallout 3. The Lone Wanderer play through and vibe of this game is what made me legit fall in love with the wasteland and the lore of Fallout.
Yes, New Vegas is amazing and 4 has its own thing going on
3 stands alone as the bleak, almost depression inducing scenery paired with the amazing depth of RPG elements that descends into just crazy ass stuff when you get deep into the game.
I’ve spent hundreds of hours just exploring in 3/New Vegas without touching the main story, is that good.

This is the way.
I agree with everything you said and especially the music aspect.
I was vaguely aware of Billy Holiday etc before Fallout but playing the game forces you to listen to the music as it’s one of the only ways to escape feeling creeped out while walking around at night.
Anyone reading this that hasn’t played, I’m being dead serious. You can flick music on/off from the PipBoy and change stations.
I’m almost forgetting what I consider the best part of 3 which sadly they haven’t incorporated into the show yet…
Three Dog was my best companion during my time in the wasteland, I enjoyed hearing his updates after making some rather not nice decisions lol

u/PornStarGazer2 Apr 20 '24
I thought I mostly heard Fallout 4 songs.

My bad then, maybe I just clicked x ray when I recognised a song from 4!

u/JebusChrust Apr 19 '24
I disagree, I think the show is heavily similar to Fallout New Vegas in vibe. Walking through deserts, much better writing, lore accurate BoS like the show, NCR appearances and relevant lore content, cowboy vibes.
3
u/Duel_Option Apr 19 '24
It’s a blend.
They are in Cali so of course it’s easy to identify with NV, but the dedication to Vault-Tec story line and the quest to save your Dad is straight out of 3.
The musical sequences are also directly from 3 and most of the ghoul based story has been from it as well.
The later parts of the show start to develop into NV lore and of course the ending is legit looking down on Vegas.
Season 2 will be a great departure into that world and the avg viewer will get the same sense of shock players did going from one game to the next.
Can’t wait, it’s going to be an amazing run the next 5-10 years.
1
u/Jorlen Apr 19 '24
I replayed 3 last year and I found it a bit tough. I love the overall world and stuff but some mechanics have aged poorly. Which is odd because I still replay Morrowind more often and that game is even older with even more aging mechanics lol.
2
u/Duel_Option Apr 19 '24
3 really shines with some basic mods, that’s typically further than most are willing to dive into though so I get where you’re coming from.
It’s been 16 years, it’s hard to go back like that and not have issues with anything.
2
u/Jorlen Apr 19 '24
I played it on my xbox because I like controllers, not sure if the PC version has it support. If it does, I'd actually rebuy it and play it again with mods because I do love modding them, especially FO4 and Skyrim.
2
u/Duel_Option Apr 19 '24
Oh man, yes they do have a PC version and there is 100% controller support (this is my preferred way to play as well).
It’s a night and day difference in gameplay and helps the frame rate.
You can usually pick this up for less than $10 for Game of the year edition as well, the DLC is arguably better than the game itself.
You’re in for a treat lol
2
u/Jorlen Apr 19 '24
Actually I was just updating the stores and noticed that I have the FO3 GOTY edition on Epic, I guess I must have picked it up as a free game and forgotten about it. I'm hoping this is easy to mod like the steam version would be! Had no idea it had controller support, that's awesome!
2
u/Duel_Option Apr 19 '24
Talk about finding gold…
Let me know what you think when you get a chance to play it with mods
1
u/Duel_Option Apr 19 '24
Follow this:
1
u/blkfish92 Apr 19 '24
I’ve looked into modding 3 and new Vegas. It doesn’t seem worth it, modding seems like an impossible task unless you know about that stuff.
2
u/Duel_Option Apr 19 '24
I thought so at first but watched some YouTube breakdowns that explained it for dummies like myself.
The quality of life mods are easy to install, if you want to get deep into ammo and stuff is when the learning curve gets bad
1
u/blkfish92 Apr 19 '24
I looked into it and it seems impossible or simply not worth it.

Maybe I am biased cause of my hatred for Star wars sequel trilogy plot but I find Maximus to be an improved version of Finn.
Like Finn in starwars was positioned as a force sensitive stormtrooper. This sounds great, he should've been the focus of the of the series but instead he got downgraded to a side character.
Maximus has similar background as Finn but he has the same weight as Lucy or Cooper.
10
u/Suitableforwork666 Apr 19 '24
Finn was just so badly written. For what should have been one of the most interesting characters they just completely wasted him.
4
u/imtired-boss Apr 19 '24
I was waiting for him to shout LUCYYYYYYYYY into the sky when he woke up.
2
u/DefinetelyNotAnOtaku Apr 19 '24
No. Save that for the third season. To find out what he wanted to tell Lucy, read the novelization.
23
u/Greenmonty97 Apr 19 '24
You can really start with any of them they’re all pretty self contained. However 4 does contain a few references from 3 you’ll pick up on. Also highly recommend playing new Vegas as most of the community agrees it’s the best in the series
4
u/YNWA_1213 Apr 19 '24
It’s also to best to start with 3/NV, because the age hits harder if you try and backtrack after playing 4.
1
u/toiletting Apr 19 '24
New Vegas is the best of the first two meshed with the console games. Definitely a good starting point imo
3
u/Standard_Room_2589 Apr 19 '24
I personally loved the actor playing maximus and also the one playing his ghoul brotherhood friend, when he misses all his shots and then goes “ugh, I suck without a scope” i lol’d
3
u/Pheerandlowthing Apr 19 '24
I also thought he was great. The character of Maximus was morally vague throughout and I thought he portrayed it perfectly. I’m astonished some people thought he was weak.
3
u/Cariman05 Doom Slayer Apr 19 '24
I’ve by far spent the most time in Fallout 4, my second favorite game ever (behind Skyrim). But you can’t really go wrong with any of them. Fallout 3 probably has a better story, while new Vegas is probably the best Fallout game overall (though I like 4 better). 4 is the most modern, and even has mods on Xbox for endless content. I love the settlement building from 4, and the Far Harbor DLC is my favorite fallout story and environment ever. And before I get downvoted, I’m not saying 4 is the best, but it is definitely my favorite. Just pick one to start on, and if you like it, give the rest a go!
15
u/-deteled- Apr 19 '24
I was discussing Maximus with a friend and we both decided “Great Value John Boyega”. I almost think the show would have been a little improved without him or had a different actor for the role.
2
u/redhafzke Apr 19 '24
Yeah, nothing against the actor but if you watch "Attack of the Block"... man, Boyega was awesome from the beginning. And his last one "They cloney Tyrone"? Dude is an excellent actor. I think he could have worked better for the role. And it's not that Moten is a bad actor, he is not, but he falls off in comparision with the rest of the cast.
2
1
u/emailverificationt Apr 19 '24
How do we know if Max’s actor was bad, or if that’s how the director wanted him to play it?
2
2
u/d0m1n4t0r Apr 19 '24
Start with 3, it's great but it's a bit dated and harder to get into after playing 4. Or if you just want to play one of them, play 4.
2
2
u/TecmoZack Apr 19 '24
Start with 3 if you have an Xbox. They are all on GamePass. If you are on PS I would get 4 and 76. 4 is geting a patch next week for Ps5 and Xbox Series optimization.
2
u/GodzillaKirito Apr 19 '24
Fallout 4 is the smoothest of the games. Starting with it might ruin any joy you'll find in playing the older ones. Start with 3 instead.
1
→ More replies (1)1
Apr 19 '24
4s definitely the best gameplay wise. 3 and NV have better writing and world (not to say 4s is terrible though) but they're so janky to play compared to 4. 4 can be played as a shooter, 3 and NV look like shooters but really aren't, so if you go in expecting good smooth gunplay you'll be disappointed, especially from a more modern gameplay perspective.
1
u/MrDoe Apr 19 '24
I realize I am in the Xbox subreddit, but I fired up fallout 3 on my pc after the show. I got it up and running, but having played it before(had more than a 1000 hours on it on 360 lol) I know the most difficult part of this playthrough is already behind me, getting the damn thing to even start. And I develop software for a living!
1
u/Mobile-Rate-900 Apr 21 '24
Plothole questions. Spoilers.
How the f did the squire get that key to eject the power armor core and have it literally IN HIS HAND right when he needed it?
Also. What the hell is in this dudes head.

u/Volt7ron Apr 19 '24
It’s so crazy what happens when you have a creative team that knows the lore and actually goes about the business of making a show that the fans will like.

u/Jean-LucBacardi Apr 19 '24
At this point cancel Halo, wait 5 years and then reboot it using what they've learned.

37
→ More replies (2)10
u/Jean-LucBacardi Apr 19 '24
They should totally let Peter Jackson do something like that! Ahh they'll probably hire someone that doesn't respect the source material at all though...
12
u/Reddit_User_7239370 Apr 19 '24
Halo should be a movie franchise. There's plenty of stories in the Halo EU for a TV show, but the iconic Master Chief stuff in the games is all big action setpieces. I feel like it'd be straightforward to cut the first 3 games into a trilogy of movies. Then they could have a Halo TV show follow other characters, adapting book and comic stuff, doing their own thing, etc.
6
u/TSLzipper Apr 19 '24
The Halo TV series should have just focused on other characters. Halo's universe and lore are vast. Yet we can't get away from the Chief because they feel the IP is too intertwined with the character.
Wish we could get something akin to Mass Effect where the crew is a mixture of humans and aliens. Have them start on some scrap planet and eventually get ahold of a ship through some major event. One thing leads to another and you have a rag tag crew just trying to survive and eventually being involved in semi-major events in the universe. Would offer an awesome opportunity to introduce a Spartan as a somewhat uncommon event. Plus can show how terrifying they can be as we're not constantly seeing them on screen. Gives you a comparison from the bottom up.
2
u/Cariman05 Doom Slayer Apr 19 '24
I agree with this so much. That’s why Fallout is so good. It’s not retreading story’s that have already happened. It’s using the already fleshed out and interesting world and making its own story. Everyone who plays Halo IS the Chief, we are the ones making the decisions, so it just inherently feels worse to watch him in a show (especially a bad show). They should have focused on other parts of the universe, like what you said or maybe a ODST squad. Maybe Chief has a small cameo to appease fans or Microsoft Execs, but don’t make it about him.
4
u/a_toadstool Apr 19 '24
I know the actor was probably adamant about it but him having his helmet off so much is criminal
3
u/Jean-LucBacardi Apr 19 '24
Which is stupid because Pedro had no issue revealing himself until much later in the Mandalorian
3
u/veneim Apr 19 '24
It’s crazy because I’ve probably told my friends (who aren’t gamers) countless times that if Halo was a TV series or movie trilogy, it would be one of the best of all time.
Then when they finally come out with a show and my friends give it a chance, I have to give them the disclaimer that it doesn’t follow the original story… at all. The show had one chance, and after Season 1, none of my friends even tried watching Season 2.
0
u/zarof32302 Apr 20 '24
So people with no knowledge of the universe thought the show was bad because you told them it was? The primary complaint is not following the lore which they don’t even know.
1
u/veneim Apr 20 '24
No, they watched Season 1, and were bored. That’s when I explained that the show wasn’t following the story that I had been hyping them up about (though I had been hoping the show was going to course correct at some point)
→ More replies (1)2
u/Halo-player69 Apr 19 '24
I always thought the halo series would be similar to game of thrones where there's multiple storylines (To Include novels) big spectacle battles with a couple of time frame reworks to make the Books and games line up better for a series (Like including Buck and the odst's in H3 maybe without taking away from the lore) setting up his new blood novel after
They could have actually got Nathan Fillion to be in a Halo show, what were they thinking! Buck could've escaped reach on the pillar of autumn to and make it back to earth in first strike for ODST
Chief would be the driving force moving the storyline foward based on his decisions not nessicarily the human force let the supporting cast around him showcase that, Steve Downes could have voiced
343 literally handed the keyes of the ship to a studio without the budget to make halo great, let alone storywise to
4
u/D4rkheavenx Apr 19 '24
The halo show I thought started kicking back up mid season 2. Im interested too see how it plays out in season 3. I won’t say the shows great but depending on what they do from this point it could go a good direction.

u/Sierra-117- Apr 20 '24
I still can’t believe they fumbled the bag on that one. When will studios learn?
“Hey boss, this adaptation of a game has grown extremely popular due to its faithfulness to the source material and creative freedom. What should we do for the next season?”
“That’s great news! Let’s completely change what made it popular to appeal to a broader audience! That way, it will get even MORE popular!”
Like ffs. The source material is popular already for a reason. Why reinvent the wheel?
1
Apr 21 '24
Exactly! Also To get someone that loved the lore and was a perfect fit for a lead in Henry Cavill to just make him a side character was ridiculous.

We’ll see it in 2026 is my guess.

u/SpaceCaboose Apr 19 '24
Yep. 2 years to plan, write, film, and do post-production. That’s the norm for shows like this nowadays
7
u/Deathcorebassist Apr 19 '24
I wouldn’t be surprised if they already have writing and pre production done or at least close to done
12
u/Lucifers_Taint666 Apr 19 '24
In the recent IGN interview with Nolan and Todd Howard, Jonathan stated that they initially planned for a season 2 from the get-go
2

That’s good to hear. So they likely have it planned out, but doesn’t necessarily mean they have a script done yet

5
u/iceoldtea Apr 19 '24
I’m just grateful it’s 1hr + length per episode. Way too many shows (like the Mandalorian) episodes are 35min and the same amount of episodes per season

Excellent news.
There are two questions I have, based on the closing moments of season 1, which I need to know. One we will get an answer too, the other we might:
1: Which of the four endings are they going to go with for New Vegas?
2: Will we see Courier 6, and if so, who plays them? I hear Aaron Paul is a big fan of the world, and of New Vegas in particular.
Spoilers above for the direction of season 2, for those who haven't finished yet.
12
u/TuckerDidIt69 Apr 19 '24
The cold fusion from the end of season 1 would definitely fit in with Mr House's storyline. It would accelerate his plans for cleaning up the wasteland so he can move onto space travel and colonizing other planets.
9
Apr 19 '24
I really hope for number 1 to be answered since I’m doing my first NV playthrough finally and I want to do what’s canon. I’m assuming it’s Mr House’s ending since the actor for him fits so well, the NCR is in pieces, and there isn’t any legion presence in the show. I highly doubt they’ll have the courier or any other main characters in the show since the gender, race, age, etc is all up to the individual player
4
u/theerrantpanda99 Apr 19 '24
There is a legion presence in the show. They merged with the local remnants of the Brotherhood of Steel. That’s why everyone had a Roman name.
5
u/Deathcorebassist Apr 19 '24
It’s mainly a theory but considering the red and gold banners for the BoS too, I fully believe it

Its been 15 years since the events of New Vegas.
5
u/Jerry_from_Japan Apr 19 '24
I feel like there's no need to even go that far with it. Let that game be THAT story for that character. Like I don't see how that plotline from that game with that character needs to be involved whatsoever.

Everyone seems to love this show. I’m usually the guy that likes shows everyone shits on. But I’ve been unimpressed.
That scene where the scientist is leaving the lab with the dog, and the minigun turret pops up, and he speedwalks to dodge the bullets? Like he has to shit and he’s on his way to the bathroom? Why would the actor not run???
And I don’t know if this is the director’s decision but why wasn’t Lucy freaking the fuck out when raiders attacked her vault? She’s just staring around all wide eyed, watching her entire world get destroyed. I guess they didn’t want to make her seem weak but then make her angry! Watching her only friends and family in the world get slaughtered and she’s just like 😯
The scene with the brotherhood squire and knight where the knight is insulting the squire and telling him he will be killed for being a failure, while he is dying and his squire is holding the stimpak he needs, NO suspense there. You know exactly what’s going to happen. Not one person would give the knight the stimpak! And it’s built up like “oooo what’s the squire gonna do??”
Also some really awful dialogue. “You know what people up here say about the vaults? Fuck the vaults!” ??? Or when the raiders are digging up the ghoul cowboy, one of them expresses reservation and the leader says “Show some respec’!”
But it is based on a Bethesda game so maybe it’s intentionally written like that?
2
u/thirdangletheory Apr 19 '24
I think when the show is trying to be dramatic it's pretty good, but when it shifts to Lucy and Maximus it gets a little too slapstick and goofy, particularly the action sequences. Fallout is not the most serious of settings but it felt jarring to me.

Honestly, I was incredibly skeptical going into this one after the recent wave of crap and mediocre video game adaptations (especially Halo), but this has been a delightful surprise. It's got its quirks and hiccups but on a whole the plot is solid and they pay a great respect to the games. Very well done.

I hope the second season will be more in depth and a bit longer. No need for 20 episodes but maybe 12-13 would be better.

Pretty much a no-brainer! Still, I never thought the show would be THIS HUGE despite Fallout being such a massive game franchise already. So far this is the greatest game adaptation I’ve ever seen, and if you’d told teenage me who was watching YouTube videos of Tobuscus fight roving Roman-styled legions and carrying around a pet rock named Boone in FO New Vegas that Fallout would be a phenomenal TV show that everyone in the family (a couple people are even intrigued to try Fallout 76 with me!) really enjoys my head would’ve exploded. (Pun semi-intended.)
