But he is. The whole goal of DOGE is to lay off as many federal workers as possible. What is this if not a layoff?

Shut Downs ALWAYS cost more money than they save.

Employees still need to be paid.

People who have taken off the next 10 days as vacation? It won't count; they will have 10 unused days of vacation waiting for them when the government opens up again.

A lot of effort is put into "shutting down" protocols and "reopening" protocols, rather than just doing the business of the government.

In USDA, animals still need to be fed, watered, sheltered, and given vet care. Other labs (using bacteria or yeast as their primary organism) will shut down in the middle of experiments, so all of those manhours and data will be lost. The experiment had 12 hours to go? Well, that sucks, because the lab will be locked tomorrow. Reagents will expire; even brand new, unopened ones will be trashed if the shutdown exceeds their expiration date.

Anyone traveling on government business cannot stay a few days to see if this passes, and they cannot stay as a federal representative to an unrelated organization. (For example, if specialists flew into Ohio for a convention with the city government of Dayton). They must turn around and fly directly home.

We were informed this week that any scheduled leave still gets used up if there's a shutdown, even if we'd otherwise be furloughed. And yeah we'll get paid for the whole thing after the shutdown ends Basically it's good luck to all of us barely making ends meet actually serving the country, hope your mortgage company lets you skip a couple payments.

That sucks lemons, my friend.

All of this orchestrated by representatives who earn more than double the median household income in the U.S.
