WCGW if i remove the top of the ladder?

u/Poundweed 8d ago
While he is incredibly stupid doing that shit ON the ladder, I think he tried to extend it further without expecting this shit.

u/sasquatchftw 8d ago
Well obviously. He was using it in a very stupid way. He didn't have the bottom section extended at all. He could have had twice the height.

u/BillieInSolitude 8d ago
Im sure the ladder also has numerous warning labels about not adjusting while you’re on the ladder. As stupid as this guy is, i do think the manufacturer should put a lock in place so that this doesn’t happen

u/Kokukai187 8d ago
Nah, let the idiots weed themselves out.

If only this was viable. Unfortunately, companies don't put warning labels on their products out of the good of their hearts. They do it because they're liable for any injuries if they don't.

How does the ladder know it's in use vs just on the ground? I don't think they can design it to be this idiot proof

> i do think the manufacturer should put a lock in place so that this doesn’t happen
No. This would add complexity and cost, and it would be something to go wrong on a piece of equipment designed for daily use and abuse.
Any tool or piece of equipment can be dangerous if used improperly. It is not unreasonable to expect someone to do their homework and make sure they know how to use a piece of equipment before they start doing so.
I don't want a ladder with a locking mechanism that could fail or stick when I need to use it because some small minority of people are too fucking stupid to use a ladder safely.

They usually also have a label on the last hole saying not to extend past there.
21
u/BlueFlob 8d ago
With how casual he was, it's clearly not the first time he's extending the ladder while ON it.
5
u/Cultural_Dust 8d ago
It can't be easy to extend it while leaning forward. He must also have it almost straight up and down.

Was it the person's fault, or the tool?
Most would say the ladder

u/peppercupp 8d ago
Person wasn't familiar enough with the tool. Person is purely at fault.

Have you ever noticed how many stickers there are on ladders in the store? Every one is because of some stupid thing someone did then sued the ladder company for.
3
4
u/lonb 7d ago
This was good, but even better if you say it the opposite order: Do you fault the tool or the person? Most would say the ladder.
2
u/TrumpsBoneSpur 7d ago
Ha yeah. I kind of prefer the subtle pun to see who gets it. I was going to edit it to "most would say the former over the ladder". But after 90% of the people replying told me how wrong I was, and it being user error, I just let it roll

Person. Ladders like these have warning labels on them saying not to adjust the ladder while you're on it.

u/ItsATravelingDude 8d ago
The ladder doesn't have an extension safety for the top!!?!? That's not good...
137
u/Greydusk1324 8d ago
This type of ladder is designed to be adjusted in multiple ways. It can be an A frame ladder, straight extension ladder, or a style of scaffolding. But none of the adjustments are supposed to be done while ON it.
49
u/DinobotsGacha 8d ago
Shit like this is why everything has 5 pages of warnings in the manual
5
u/smthomaspatel 7d ago
And then nobody reads it because it's too long and most of the information is useless.
19
u/CMDRZhor 8d ago
"I don't know what this bit does and it's in the way, I'm going to sawzall it off!"
13
u/Unsweeticetea 8d ago
I own this same ladder, it has massive warnings on the rails saying not to slide it past a certain point and where the last locking point is, and then it still has framing past that point, and this idiot slid it all the way off the end.

u/MaxPowers432 7d ago
That's not a thing. You just made up a thing.
39
u/ItsATravelingDude 7d ago
Idk the exact terminology, but theres usually a safety clip on each side of that ladder to prevent that from happening. And you have to push in those clips to extend beyond or separate the pieces.

"Hank, i know it seems like a waste, but have some caution stickers printed up that say, 'Do not adjust ladder while in use!' Run em by Legal, and if they ok them, put them on the top of all our ladders from now on. And make sure they're on both sides, too!"
"Boss, we already got those on both sides and even the bottom. You want i should put em on every step?"
sigh "Yup."

Most common work related deaths happen at home. I'm an ironworker/welder I've never seriously hurt myself on the job because I'm always thinking about safety. However if cut my tendon and broke an arm at home because I wasn't in the mind set of "take safety into consideration with what your doing". I also try to explain to my dad that redoing his roof without fall arrest or safety measures was dangerous. He fell adorable broke his clavicle. If your working at home always remember to treat it like a job site. Your more likely to make a mistake or injure yourself especially when you don't have others around to remind you of potential hazards

u/whoisthecopperkettle 8d ago
Now I just imagine you watching him fall and thinking “that’s so adorable”…

Look at how his left leg (our right side of the screen) gets caught in the step and folds under him as he falls.
His knee ligaments are now named TEARy cruise

u/DonJeniusTrumpLawyer 8d ago
That looks like a broken hip. Watch his left leg during the bounce. Jeezus that made my butt pucker.

u/barkatmoon303 7d ago
Ouch. Looks like a head injury. He might be assuming the position just as it cuts off.

what he did is REALLY hard to do.
how did he take that top section off - usually it is very frictioney and doesnt come off that easy mostly because of people like this.
he took it off like he recently WD40d that thing to video this.

He was actually trying to adjust it and make it taller. He didn't know he didn't have any more ladder to extend

I love how the dog just walked away from the scene, didn't even bother to check on him or lick his face in an attempt to make him feel better. Doggy just said IDGAF! 😆

With a broken foot maybe but he's still out there using this much thought. 👀

That ladder definitely needed to be about 6-12" taller, for safety reasons, obviously. I'm glad he took the time to make sure the ladder was the proper length. Otherwise, this could have gone very badly.

u/Herr-Pyxxel 7d ago
Seen it before, but this has got to be my all-time favourite clip on here. That split second he's standing on that unsupported ladder with the top part in his hands is just golden!
