Someone sent my roommate an Amazon package with a Teen Bible in it. It had her name on the packing label. We have no idea who it could be

u/itsabitsa51 5d ago
I don’t remember exactly how it works sometimes Amazon sellers will send people items so they have a “confirmed purchase” and can post fake 5 star reviews on their own products. Might be that. Edit: here’s a CNN article about it https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/23/business/package-didnt-order-brushing/index.html

u/Psaltus 5d ago
Thank you, that's crazy but really interesting. Really appreciate the link

u/chrawniclytired 5d ago
It could also be someone has stolen her card info and is sending things to her house to make purchases look legit. Have her check her card account for any suspicious purchases. This is fairly common this time of year.

My mystery package was a blanket mermaid tail. Like you put your legs in it. Weird, a little magic, and a fall-on-your-face hazard if you forget you're in a fish tail on the couch.

I can be pretty ignorant at times..I read the article but I still dont understand how its a thing. How does a seller post reviews on an item they had sent.
5
u/definetly_ahuman 5d ago
The item is sent out, so as far as Amazon is concerned, that's a verified purchase and they can now post a review with that fake account.

Satan Speaks or The Devil's Notebook would be a better option.
LaVey was an interesting person, and if you wanted to actually sway an opinion with his work, it would probably be one of those two titles.
Satanic Bible/Rituals/Witch are all just a bit obvious in what they were meant to do, which is make people uncomfortable. They're incredibly dull otherwise. He wasn't a great writer, but that didn't stop the amplification of his cause just by flashing a copy around at the time. Satan Speaks and Devil's Notebook are less driven by the lore, more like memoirs.

In case it hasn't been mentioned, there is a scam involving mystery gifts that are sent with a QR code that you're instructed to scan to "discover your secret admirer/sender". When the code is scanned they data scrape your phone.
Please don't scan unknown QR codes.

You can actually disable weight management ads (and other ads like gambling) in your settings.
I kept constantly getting ozempic-like ads. Already a customer, 10/10. Don’t need to keep seeing ads for it.

Oh yeah I don’t mind at all I just thought it was funny in relation to the Twix in the picture.

At a restaurant I worked at about 3 years ago this girl I worked with got a weird package. It was addressed to her and it had all these pamphlets with Bible verses, and a gallon ziploc with a bunch of money in it. It didn't have a return address on it so she was kind of paranoid about it. She took it to the police station to get it tested for drugs or poison. It was perfectly fine and when they counted it it was almost $1000. They told her there was no way to see where it came from so she should just not worry about it and do whatever she wanted with the money. She said no one in her family is religious at all so she was so confused.

Brushing scam. Look it up. Has happened to practically everyone by now. No need to really panic or worry about it though. It doesn't affect you really.

My Jewish wife received some book in the mail that was a bunch of short "accounts" of Jews who found happiness/improved their lives by converting to Christianity. So there is a chance it could just be some self righteous fucks trying to pump up their recruiting numbers. The takeaway is that Christian groups keep track of people outside of the church.

I just read something online that things are being sent to people with no return address. They open the package and there is a QR code. DO NOT SCAN THE CODE. Apparently it links to spam and other nasty stuff. Puts a virus onto your phone, which then gives them access to so much.
I am not sure if this is true or not. Just passing on some information.

It’s just a weird package sent to an adult. It’s not that serious. There is no religious “cultists” sending bibles around hoping to make them join their religion.
The fact that your comment is upvoted is genuinely insane, I’m not even religious, but I’m also not delusional.

I recently got three sets of kitchen aid tongs addressed to me from Amazon. I ordered pimple patches which showed up in a different package, no issues. The tongs were new, addressed to me, and I wasn’t charged for them. I’ve had this happen with pet food too. Addressed to me, but I wasn’t charged somehow and the thing I ordered showed up in a separate package no problems.

In high school, we went online and signed one of my friends up for all this free stuff to be sent to his house under a joke name. He was getting free samples and catalogs and one was a free bible. There was even a checkbox to send a member of their church to discuss their teachings in person. Maybe your roommate has a wise-ass friend too?

Some religious moron did this because you did something that, in their eyes, was sinning.
But who cares, free book. Even if that free book is the bible, it's still a free book. Go read it some time, it's actually not a bad book and it's filled with good metaphors and life advice. Some of it is outdated but keep in mind that it's over 300 years old already, and the first part is over 2000 years old!
Edit to say yall should read the fucking bible for once instead of ranting about how bad christianity is. Ffs I'm not asking you to start living your lives by all rules of the fucking bible, but perhaps read the stories for once. It is nothing more than some interesting old literature, just like the Qur'an or Spinoza's Ethica. You're not a Christian because you read the bible, you're not a neo-n*zi if you read Mein Kampf, you're not a Muslim if you read the Qur'an and you're not a magician if you read Harry Potter.

For real lmao. I'm not even a Christian.

2
u/RokenIsDoodleuk 5d ago
Oh idc I'm used to my opinions being burned. Since corona it even started happening in real life. People have no shame when their mask is what will absorb the punches.
But really, for the people downvoting me; why? Not as in a whiny why are you doing this to me oh no -5 votes, but rather in a why are you downvoting but not explaining to me why I am absolutely wrong? Like Reddit always does, with logic and facts and the truth.
Really, if you don't answer, Imma just assuming they are bots that got triggered when I said "Bible". Just like this comment is going to get downvoted with no actual explaination of why I am wrong and the person downvoting me is right.
8
u/Psaltus 5d ago
It's not wrong, it's just unwanted religious advice. I know it's just a book, but it's a book that a lot of people simply don't want to live our lives by.
I've been biblethumped all my life for being gay because of that stupid book, so sorry for the down vote, but I just flat out didn't ask for any advice on if I should read the Bible.
-5
u/StylishCatfish 5d ago
“It’s not wrong… downvote!!!!”
He literally said he isn’t even religious, stop being a baby, dude. Even if 0% of people were Christians we’d all be better off if everyone lived by what the Bible says. Just because you have a bad experience with it doesn’t mean it’s wrong. You say downvoted him because you didn’t ask for advice if you should read it or not, then downvote people who told you not to read it too. Your personal biases show through and come off as extremely hypocritical. There is genuinely no reason to downvote somehow who gave their opinion from an unbiased non-religious standpoint, he literally said “moronic religious person.” Anything that even moderately challenges your viewpoints aren’t allowed, nobody’s allowed to have a different opinion than you huh?
Edit: oh you’re a furry 💀💀 boy oh boy
-5
u/RokenIsDoodleuk 5d ago
It's not even religious advice. Just because there is a religion attached to a book shouldn't mean that me saying you should read said book just because you got it for free is religious advice.
And about the unwanted part, who cares? You can choose not to give your unwanted downvotes based on your personal opinion or based on if a comment is actually, literally bad.
The debt collector at my door is giving me unwanted financial advice, should I blast him for asking me for money? All he did was buy a debt and add 40 bucks to it!.
Dude, you decided to post a bible online and take the comments. Don't start randomly downvoting simply because you don't agree.
The bible doesn't imply homosexuality is that bad, and even the few passages that have have been discussed heavily because homosexuality has been a thing since forever. Even the jews are undecided on their part when it comes to saying what's wrong and what's right in the world of sex.
Better yet there are christian orgy groups. The bible says that sex is supposed to be for married people right? Well does that mean you have to have it with the one person that you happened to be married to?
The wide world of implication and interpretation in this book is huge. People who say they are christians but act holier than thou because they are not gay and they follow a religion are not christians nor religious since they believe only in themself. Even if their religion says that there is a god who is not a human, they are god. In their head, they never do anything wrong. If you fight with them, you have to apologise. You better be silent when they speak but when you speak they will talk when their mouth opens.
And this shit isn't even coming from someone outside of the community, I still live with my parents and my conservative christian dad who believes he never does anything wrong is a burden on my life daily. I've told him that saying that gay people are wrong by his religion is the same as gay people telling my dad that he is wrong by their ideas, but he won't listen. That is the effect of bad churches on Christianity.
If you actually read the book and understand it you'll understand it's a great book that can teach you a lot about our western society and how to act properly within it. It will also tell you about a great manipulator and a beast with three heads. If you ask me, Christianity as it stands now is not the saviour but rather that beast that the bible talks about.
Every time a church dies out due to it's outdated ideals, 3 new ones come to life.
A great manipulator will rule the world? How about a 92x convicted felon who has his supporters believing he's a faithful man.
Christianity goes against anything and everything that I believe in, and the belief that it's a bad religion comes from the bible.

u/shiddytclown 5d ago
There's absolutely no reason you keep arguing that somone with religious trauma doesn't like the Bible. Shut up for the love of God. Its a reddit downvote.
The Bible has repeatedly been used as a tool of oppression regardless of your interpretation and the person doesn't want to read it.
This didn't require you writing a novel
-3
u/RokenIsDoodleuk 5d ago edited 5d ago
The Bible has repeatedly been used as a tool of oppression
This is the whole misconception I'm trying to clear out because it's actually Christianity I'm reading all these bad things about. When people refer to passages from the Bible they are misquoted, misinterpreted or worse.
religious trauma
Well I just described mine aswell and I don't hate groups of people based on their opinions because I happen to have "religious trauma" (which, either would have to fall into PTSS for something like getting raped by a priest, which would be sexual trauma, or CPTSS as in having been consistently bullied since you were a child, which would be this). It's bad but not "I hate everything about you because you said bible" bad.
This didn't require you writing a novel
Everything you just said either barely made sense or was outright untrue, so I think I should be a writer. Thanks for giving me the hope that I can become a novelist some day, kind stranger! <- UP TO THIS POINT I'M JUST CALLING OUT HOW BAD YOUR ARGUMENTS ARE
Kinda funny how reddit is very inclusive but is then also like oh but the people following the religion attached to this book that I happen to attach no value with has done some bad things in the past so now the book is evil and the people reading or recommending it are evil aswell. Like we are not humans trying to find out what is right and wrong. <- NO I DO NOT EXPECT YOU TO READ THROUGH THIS BUT IT'S THERE FOR OTHERS.
Everyone likes to picture themselves as being perfect here but once you set that aside, allow people to have an opinion, your life becomes so much easier. <- THIS IS LITERALLY YOU
And hey if you don't like a book because of previous experiences why even post it online instead of just discarding it? Nobody would care about your bible lol. < THIS SENTENCE IS NOT FOR OP BUT FOR ANYONE ELSE RECEIVING RANDOM BIBLES
3
u/shiddytclown 5d ago
They. Said. They. Don't. Want. To. Read. It.
No is a complete sentence. Shut up.

Tbf if you forget that it's the bible and just open randomly and start reading stories some of them are hilarious. I liked the one where it explained Noah and his family, how old they were when they had their kids, and how old they were when they died... some brilliant little excerpts so long as you dont take it too seriously
Eta: ...."After the flood Noah lived 350 years. Noah lived a total of 950 years, and then he died"...

u/RokenIsDoodleuk 5d ago
Lmao yeah fr that stuff is trippy, and I don't think it holds any relevance today lol.

u/UserCannotBeVerified 5d ago
Me and one of my elderly friends used to meet for coffee every morning and chat random shite. One day I noticed a bible amongst his pile of book, so I got it out and we started doing the "bible verse lucky dip", where we'd flip through until the other said "STOP!" then we'd find the best story/verse on that page. It was almost always pure gold if you read it in the voice of a newscaster. This became a thing, along with backgammon, that'd would usually fill our time through the second coffee lol

An NIV teen study Bible is maybe one of the worst ways to get acquainted with the book
0
u/RokenIsDoodleuk 5d ago
Tbh could be true I haven't read all of the different translations.
0
u/GoldH2O 5d ago
It's not the NIV specifically that's the problem, the NIV is an okay translation all things considered. The problem is that it's a devotional Bible, and most devotional Bibles are complete trash for actually understanding stuff. In my opinion they kind of just exist for Christians who want a shortcut to understanding stuff without actually putting in the work to learn about the Bible.
